I run Antergos with MATE 1.16 and GTK 3.20 and have this same problem. I 
managed to fix it with the following change to indicator.py:

as planned I fixed bug 1559088 in the merge I made into zesty.

If you could take a look and check if with tgt (1:1.0.67-1ubuntu1) this
issue here would be solved for you (or at least less broken - as this is
not fixing why tgt spawns so many threads, but it removes the systemd
service limit on them) we could maybe consider an SRU for Xenial?

As already suspected, a kernel upgrade as suggested by Joseph didn't
change anything wrt to the issue. It would be great if we can give more
specific advice rather than suggesting a vanilla kernel upgrade as a
"one cure for all".

@Joseph: When can the community expect an increase in severity as
requested above? Given the number of affected people for this and the
previous bug (#1464917) and the timeline so far without much progress it
would be great if we can prioritize this upstream.

just to mention that this is indeed automated code...
We are using chzdev on Ubuntu to make the device persistent using the following 
command:
/sbin/chzdev dasd-eckd 0199 -e -p

you suggested we should use this command instead of:
echo 1 > /sys/bus/ccw/devices/0.0.0199/online

i guess you meant chccwdev -e...

We have no problem changing the code to use chccwdev  instead of the echo.
other distros are not relevant i only mentioned them because you asked why we 
use the echo command. we can run whatever is needed on Ubuntu regardless of 
other distros.

we are using udevadm to settle after the device is linked. we did not
settle after the device was brought online.

please ignore the full path for each command... that is generated
dynamically by the code. the command path will change dynamically if the
command is moved in the future... this is done to overcome cases where
the command is not in the PATH.

Now, for the problem itself...
i changed the code to use chccwdev -e to vary the device online.
i changed the code to also settle after the device is varied online.

i am getting:
root@JUUB16MS:~# /sbin/dasdfmt -b 4096 -d cdl -f /dev/disk/by-path/ccw-0.0.019a

The fix is failing in xenial: I have to repeatedly clean up after the
installer, when it complains that it cannot do its work due to disk
space on the tiny /boot partition.  "My disk is full again!"

The bug remains: The automatic update is not considered an unattended
update, since the user is there attending it via an interactive
application (tell me I'm wrong).

I'm experiencing this on a K350 keyboard, on 4.4.0-21-generic kernel
(fresh install of Linux Mint 18 Sarah / Ubuntu 16.04 LTS).

I usually see the problem after changing windows by clicking on one in
the panel. As the new window takes focus, the ...555's start
flying.

Another curious symptom: occasionally, pressing the number "5" key while
typing does not output anything. It just happened while I was typing
this sentence.

But after having read all the above posts, I am going to try a kernel
upgrade now. For some reason Mint has marked the kernel updates as
"unsafe" which why I'm still on the release kernel of 4.4.0-21-generic.

I will report my results.

I have 3 users on my system, we use the panel applet to close or suspend the 
session and switch to the lightdm login screen.
Sometimes happens that if I switch to another user (without closing the 
session), going back to the previous account (via lightdm-greeter) the whole 
system freeze. Lightdm can open the suspended session, appears the desktop 
frequently with the imagine of the previuos window to suspend the session.
But anything work.
I have to hard reset.

I've now marked this incomplete.
I believe it was seen as a result of running a much older image 
(/ubuntu-os-cloud/ubuntu-1604-xenial-v20160627) and not having updated it, but 
just adding -proposed and installing cloud-init.

I've ssince tested with a newer image (ubuntu-1604-xenial-v20161115) and
not seen this issue.

After installation of cloud-init from proposed we can do

journalctl --full -o --no-pager
$ journalctl --full --no-pager | grep "ordering" || echo no ordering
no ordering

$ journalctl --full --no-pager | grep -i "break" || echo no breakno

Recently i installed Ubuntu 16.10 on dell inspiron 1525 laptop and the
problem is that the display is freezing sometimes after entering the
login credentials. And after freezing it never login to the unity

I looked at gce-compute-image-packages_20160930-0ubuntu2 and it's
google-startup-scripts.service is simpler, with no references to cloud-
init at all, only:

After=local-fs.target network-online.target network.target rsyslog.service
After=google-instance-setup.service google-network-setup.service
Wants=local-fs.target network-online.target network.target

So it seems likely fine to drop the Wants on cloud-final.service (or
even other pieces...)

The change here seems to me to resolve the issue, and should be safe

Not sure exactly when it changed, but on xenial, the pmi schema seems to
work fine. Tested:

 - adding the provided LDIF directly: ldapadd -H ldapi:// -Y EXTERNAL -f 
/etc/ldap/schema/pmi.ldif
 - including the schema in a slapd.conf file
 - converting pmi.schema to LDIF and adding that to slapd

and all were successful.
