The correct directory for the file is /usr/share/locale/* I checked this by extracting the file, moving the locales to the correct directory, and rebuilding the package. After that they installed to the correct path versus the debian package. Tested on a fresh install of Ubuntu 16.10 x86_64 by... gcc -o disable_journal disable_journal.c chmod ugo+x update-efi-booter install disable_journal update-efi-booter /usr/local/bin identify the device that the /boot/efi partition is mounted on, umount it and then use gdisk to delete that partition and create a new one with the code AF00 for HFS+. Write the changes out in gdisk and then execute mkfs.hfsplus on the device to format it. Now change the boot/efi entry in fstab to have 'hfsplus defaults', remount the boot/efi partition and just execute the 'update-efi-booter' script. For those in a lurch because of this error, you can always install Chrome (the non-open-source version) and use it until this situation is cleared up. Chrome and Chromium seem to be able to exist side-by-side, and when this is resolved you can remove it or switch back to Chromium and just leave it for the next crisis. After a little more testing, it looks like I need to do a full shutdown/startup sequence (not restart) to get sound working in 4.9 (final). It also seems I need to do the same thing when I go back to my Windows partition or sound will not work in Windows.
