[Bug 1658921] Re: NetworkManager does not manage wired connection

2017-04-08 Thread Danny B
Just had this happen after an ordinary desktop upgrade from 16.04 to
16.10, had to do the touch thing, because 10-globally-managed-
devices.conf was missing.

For the default user-friendly desktop linux distro option, Ubuntu seems
pretty bad at this just working out of the box thing. I've had less
random bugs during my several years with Gentoo, and I didn't ditch it
so I could waste more of my time installing obscure kernel patches and
having to configure things I don't care about.

No, I'm using whatever in proposed repositories. Is it different from
what is in repositories? Name is the same, don't want to override
current kernel, it seems to be the only one installed currently.

[Bug 1674930] Re: Amazon EC2 instances broken

2017-04-08 Thread Trent Lloyd
nvidia-367 was removed as part of the CVE-2016-8826 & CVE-2017-0318 fix
in #1659586

nvidia-367 was considered no longer supported by NVIDIA, so nvidia-375
was uploaded and nvidia-367 replaced with a transitional package to
upgrade.

The error message suggests that there is a 367 series of legacy driver, though
the legacy driver page presently lists no such series
(http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html). According to the README, the 367
series driver will in fact be maintained specially for GRID GPUs only.

Quote from:
http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86_64/375.39/README/supportedchips.html
ftp://ftp.icm.edu.pl/packages/linux-nvidia/Linux-x86/375.10/README/README.txt

Below are the legacy GPUs that are no longer supported in the unified driver.
These GPUs will continue to be maintained through the special legacy NVIDIA
GPU driver releases.

The 367.xx driver supports the following set of GPUs:

NVIDIA GPU product Device PCI ID* VDPAU features
-- --- ---
GRID K340 0FEF D
GRID K1 0FF2 D
GRID K520 118A D
GRID K2 11BF D

In terms of short-term workarounds, the nvidia-340 package also claims
to support the K520. It may be a usable alternative until a nvidia-367
solution is available.

point release of 16.04 is 16.04.2. Please try installing from that
version of the installation media and see if that resolves your issue.
Thanks in advance!

[Bug 1681138] Re: silent file corruption with cp -ar file transfers to USB

Its unclear, file attributes, names, size all appear the same from ls output.
I initially discovered it while setting up a local repo, dpkg didn't recognize
the deb file output.
Diff throws IO errors.
Copying with cp appears to work (failing silently)
dd & rsync both throw an input output error when attempting to copy affected
files.
lsof of the affected files directly after a copy throws an unable to stat (I'm
not too versed with lsof so that may be a common problem unrelated).

>How do you mean "flush of the write buffer"?

I used hdparm -f on the device node after unmounting it, I then used
eject before physically removing it.

>3 Seconds sounds way too short -
My thoughts exactly, the copy was over a usb 2.0 root hub so I would expect no
more than 30MB/sec.

The issue only appears for this specific USB Drive I've tested 5 other
usb thumbdrive models with no issue.

I've linked the exact model below.

[Bug 1681138] Re: silent file corruption with cp -ar file transfers to USB

2017-04-08 Thread Pádraig Brady
What's the nature of the corruption? For example is there too little data?
How do you mean "flush of the write buffer"?
3 seconds sounds way too short to actually write the data.
I presume you're unmounting the device before ejecting it?
Note cp is just doing read/write so unlikely to be the issue.
Note also cp reads/writes 128KiB at a time,
whereas dd defaults to only 512B at a time and so may avoid async issues.

3) What I done and what I expected:
Create a new impress presentation
Set the layout to "Blank Slide"
Place a rectangle on the slide
On the "Properties" panel, in the "Area" section choose "Gradient" for "Fill".
(A green gradient with direction "30°" appears as default settings).
In an attempt to change the direction, type "90[TAB]" in the direction field.

I expected the rectangle will have a gradation from top to bottom.
(gradation did not change)

4) What happened:
The number I typed in got a degree sign "°" appended.
The gradation direction did not change.

To see if the direction that I entered was stored in any way,
I clicked on the slide outside the rectangle, then clicked on the
rectangle again, to refresh the propeties section.
The direction field showed the original default value "30°"

I compared this to a windows version, recently installed, and
the windows version worked as I expected.

That said... I can no longer crash emacs25 in zesty with the above sample code.
The code still doesn't work...but the bug in question here (crashing the
entirety of emacs) no longer exists.

wget https://www.inlab.de/balance-3.35.tar.gz
tar -xzvf balance-3.35.tar.gz
cd balance-3.35
make (may be you must first 'apt-get install make gcc')
make install

[Bug 1441951] Re: Enable DRI3

Should we reconsider this? Three reasons for that:
- Since Vivid (hwen reported bugs occur) the driver code evolved a lot;
- Probably would be good for the migration to a GNOME desktop environment;
- Vulkan driver is becoming more present each day and it needs the DRI3.

Re: [Bug 1680629] Re: crashed during oem install

2017-04-08 Thread Cecil Merrell
Thank you. I ended up just installing it on my laptop and then transfering
the drive to the desktop. Is there more documentation on what my problem
was and the solutions to it so I can learn more from it?

On Fri, Apr 7, 2017, 7:55 AM Phillip Susi wrote:

Your disk is currently partitioned to boot in bios mode, but you booted
the installer in EFI mode. A warning message prompted you that this
could be a problem and recommended performing a bios mode install
instead, but you chose not to. You either need to perform the bios mode
install, or partition the disk using GPT and set up an EFI system
partition to install in EFI mode. This will be done for you if you
choose the "use entire disk" guided install option.

[Bug 1681150] [NEW] Has anyone noticed zesty linux-image-generic_4.10.0.19.21_amd64 has no initrd.img AND can't see Root=UUID= AND read any partitions?

2017-04-08 Thread robert Newton
Public bug reported:

I'm running Zesty 17.04 linux-image.4.10.0.13
I can log in but compiz has to be --replaced.

Then I update-grub. kernel .14 downloads yesterday
and .19 today. Both don't have a initrd.img-4.10.0-1[49]-generic.

Most would stop here.
In grub.cfg I tried adding a initrd /initrd.img with is linked
to /boot/initrd.img-4.10.0-13-generic to both
linux vmlinuz-4.10.0-14-generic and linux vmlinuz-4.10.0-19-generic

What does it mean when it boots until a kernel panic "can't find root."
This also happens if there is no initrd line (as intended.)

ubuntu-bug linux reports "not a real package. please remove third party packs"
$cat /proc/version_signature |tee version.log

[Bug 1681146] [NEW] Kubuntu Installer Slideshow references obsolete KDE SC

2017-04-08 Thread Marco Parillo
Public bug reported:

[16:24] Does the KDE Software Compilation still exist?
[16:25] I think they used to call it the KDE SC for short, and it
still appears during the install slide show. I have not heard that in a while,
and I wonder if it is obsolete. I bet valorie would know.
[16:26] yes, it's gone
[16:26] there is just KDE Applications now
[16:26] So it should be gone from our Ubiquity installer?
[16:26] agreed
[16:26] last place it should be is 14.04
[16:27] now it's plasma, frameworks and applications

[Bug 1681138] [NEW] silent file corruption with cp -ar file transfers to USB

2017-04-08 Thread Nathan
Public bug reported:

The OS is 16.10 Yakkety LiveCD.

I'm seeing silent file corruption when using the cp -ar switches for
file transfers to a Sandisk Ultra USB 3.0 32GB thumb drive across a USB
2.0 bus.

The first indication of a problem is when attempting to read the data at
some point in time after the initial copy.

The copy command completes successfully with no visible errors.

At first I thought this may have been related to an async write,
however; the issue persists after a flush of the write buffer prior to
ejection of the device, and there are no issues with DD.

As a test, a 2.5G file was generated with random data and then copied
with cp -ar to and from the device. The copy completes with no visible
errors within 3 seconds.

I've included the strace log of the transfer in action as an attachment.

** Affects: coreutils (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 1681131] [NEW] Installing Libvirt Qemu creates a user account.

2017-04-08 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

After installing Libvirt and Qemu, they create a user account "Libvirt
Qemu" on the home page.

I don't understand how this happens. I don't get how this happens. It's
cosmetically annoying, but I wonder if there are any implications of a
system account being available/appearing as a normal user account.

[Bug 192508] Re: mouse keys too easy to accidently turn on

2017-04-08 Thread Agronskey Hooper
Just wanted to add further confirmation that this particular keyboard
shortcut is 'too easy' to activate. One of the babies in the house,
each barely over one year old, reached up and randomly pressed buttons
on my keyboard, turning on the 'mouse keys' function and disabling the
numpad. I've been perplexed by this for a couple of months at least.

The suggestions I've seen to 'fix' the problem don't work for me on
Ubuntu 14.04 LTS 64-bit. The system completely ignores the
Settings|Universal Access|Pointing and Clicking|Mouse Keys setting.
Using ALT+L-SHIFT+NUMLOCK, or SHIFT+NUMLOCK does the exact same thing as
simply pressing NUMLOCK alone.

I believe that shortly after building this PC I had set the BIOS on my
computer to automatically turn ON the numpad. I think that may be part
of this insidious problem. Because now, when the light is ON for the
NUMLOCK key, I am in Mouse Keys mode. And, when the NUMLOCK key is
switched OFF, the numpad works normally.

Is there a way to permanently disable Mouse Keys, and get my keyboard to
operate the way it used to?
