This is related to bug #1679435 and bug #1679784. Since those bugs are

still have proper depends/recommends so that it doesn't accidentally
crop up again later.

SecureBoot was disabled when the pc started. I did apt-get update and
the system asked about SecureBoot preferences; after updating and reboot
the issue was solved.

[Bug 1652525] Re: DNS leak in ubuntu 16.10

2017-06-02 Thread Nicholas Stommel
Sadly, the option block-outside-dns is only supported on Windows
clients. Which is a real shame, because systemd-resolved is leaking DNS
queries everywhere by design. This is a problem with the hardcoded
design of the gnome network manager integrating (or rather...not
integrating) with systemd-resolved. I attempted to understand GIO proxy
bus calls but honestly patching the network manager is beyond my
capabilities.

[Bug 1695578] [NEW] shim-signed trigger should not fail when attempting to re-prompt noninteractively and we've prompted before

2017-06-02 Thread Steve Langasek
Public bug reported:

We currently always fail with an error when update-secureboot-policy has
been called, we detect that secureboot needs to be disabled for a dkms
module, and we don't have an interactive debconf frontend. However, as
a result this means that if the user has previously made a conscious
decision *not* to disable secureboot, despite having dkms modules
installed, a non-interactive package upgrade will fail.

It doesn't make sense for a non-interactive package upgrade to fail
merely because the user's secureboot setting is ill-advised.

We should ensure that:

 - If the user installs a new DKMS module, we should not silently proceed.
Either the user should be prompted, or if we're noninteractive, the trigger
should fail.
 - If the user has not installed any new DKMS modules, but we have an
interactive frontend, we should prompt.
 - If the user has not installed any new DKMS modules, and we're
noninteractive, the trigger should silently pass.

To know whether new DKMS modules have been installed, we should capture
the list from /var/lib/dkms and store it under /var/lib/shim-signed on
each successful invocation.

For upgrade purposes, the shim-signed postinst should detect that we are
upgrading from a version of the package that did not yet record the list
in /var/lib/shim-signed, and record any DKMS modules present, so that
these are not considered "new". We only want to do this on upgrade, not
on a new install of shim-signed; on a new install, the trigger should
already handle this for us.

[Bug 1692247] Re: package iproute2 4.3.0-1ubuntu3.16.04.1 failed to install/upgrade: package iproute2 is not ready for configuration cannot configure (current status 'half-installed')

2017-06-02 Thread Nicholas Galarza
Hello all, this bug also prevents me from installing other OS updates.
If anyone can relate to this, then I think security may actually be an
issue if some important security updates cannot subsequently be
installed.

[Bug 1694866] Re: (Alps?) DualPoint Stick disabled but visible after suspend Dell Latitude 7480

2017-06-02 Thread Joe Harrington
The good news is that this does enable the thing to work after resume
from suspend.

The bad news is that this kernel panics upon mkfs.ext4. I just tested
it again, installing as you suggested rather than using the 17.04
install I had tried before. The 16.04 and 16.10 kernels didn't crash.
Both are 4.8 kernels; the new one is 4.10.

It's somewhat of a soft crash. The cursor disappears and the keyboard
does nothing, but the X window system is still alive and if I tail -f
syslog before running mkfs.ext4, I can see the call trace appear (but I
can't capture it, and it doesn't get written to disk). A few more
messages may appear later. After a few minutes, it goes black but does
not reboot. The fan turns on immediately after the crash, at high revs.

Should I file a separate bug about the panic? I'm not sure it's
technically a panic, as it doesn't say that word, as some other OSes
have in the past. But, it's some kind of exceptional kernel event that
brings the system down.

I'm very happy to run tests to work either problem.

[Bug 1637899] Re: installer crashes on install of 17.04

2017-06-02 Thread Amit Gupta
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1637985 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1637985

I'm also facing the same issue. Initially I thought it is because of
intel machine. But people reported it is expected to work on both intel
and amd 64.

Live user session works fine

Re: [Bug 1695514] Re: Gnome shell 3.24 Gnome extensions not installing

2017-06-02 Thread Joseph Romano
Jeremy

I'd like to keep testing 17.10 and try to be of help by reporting bugs. I
sorted out the extension problem by deleting contents of /extensions and
reinstalling: open weather, show ip, panel extender, and places. I use
Chrome and Chrome Gnome Shell version 9. I haven't had any issues with
Chrome Gnome Shell specifically.

[Bug 1522675] Re: Warning messages about unsandboxed downloads

2017-06-02 Thread Scott Cowles Jacobs
I am using Lubuntu 17.04, and when using Synaptic, I get the
"...unsandboxed..." message after a completed download. One message per
download. (Why only one? The package I just downloaded for testing
purposes pulled in six or eight other packages, but only the last was
shown in the message.)

The message occurs in an error window: a large triangle with an exclamation
markis shown, with the large text "An error occurred", then (smaller) "The
following details are provided:"
So to the user, it does not LOOK like a one-line minor warning...
Synaptic does not refresh the package listing until after dismissing the window.

I now provide 3 examples of the detail provided:

W: Download is performed unsandboxed as root as file
'/var/cache/apt/archives/partial/libreoffice-style-
galaxy_1%3a5.3.1-0ubuntu2_all.deb' couldn't be accessed by user '_apt'.
- pkgAcquire::Run (13: Permission denied)

W: Download is performed unsandboxed as root as file
'/var/cache/apt/archives/partial/gstreamer1.0-pulseaudio_1.10.4-1ubuntu1_amd64.deb'
couldn't be accessed by user '_apt'. - pkgAcquire::Run (13: Permission
denied)

W: Download is performed unsandboxed as root as file
'/var/cache/apt/archives/partial/speedtest-cli_1.0.0-1_all.deb' couldn't
be accessed by user '_apt'. - pkgAcquire::Run (13: Permission denied)

/var/cache/apt/archives/partial and
/var/lib/update-notifier/package-data-downloads/partial
both have Owner (Create and delete files) and Group (Access files) owned by
Root.

/etc/passwd contains a line:
_apt:x:105:65534::/nonexistent:/bin/false
...so the user does exist, but is not assigned to the two directories

comment #43 says that apparently I should do a:
sudo chown _apt <...each of the two above directories...>

Should I?

How/when are these directories created in the first place?

Surely whatever created them should have set them up with _apt as
owner...?

I don't think I have received this message from update-notifier, but am
not sure...

[Bug 1695565] [NEW] [MIR] chrome-gnome-shell

2017-06-02 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Public bug reported:

Availability

Co-maintained with Debian GNOME. arch:all package

Changes from Debian
---
- Updated to the latest stable version
- Disabled debian-distribution.patch. See https://bugs.debian.org/840804 The
patch is required because Debian currently rejects uploads that contain files
in /etc/opt/ but Ubuntu does not. It's possible to have a different patch
series for Debian than Ubuntu and I forwarded that to Debian in that bug but it
has not been accepted into Debian yet.

Rationale
=
Users of gnome-shell expect that they will be able to install (and uninstall,
enable, disable, and configure) GNOME Shell extensions by visiting
https://extensions.gnome.org/ in their web browser. It is a usability problem
for users to have to install chrome-gnome-shell from the command line for that
feature to work.

gnome-shell in Ubuntu 16.04 - 17.04 recommends chrome-gnome-shell.

Workaround: It is possible to install and uninstall extensions in GNOME
Software in Ubuntu 17.04+. It is possible to enable and disable
extensions; uninstall extensions; and configure any extension
preferences in gnome-tweak-tool (not currently installed by default in
Ubuntu 17.10 but it was always installed by default by Ubuntu GNOME).

Security

- Actively developed upstream

https://anonscm.debian.org/git/pkg-gnome/chrome-gnome-shell.git/

And here's the source code for the extensions.gnome.org website:
https://git.gnome.org/browse/extensions-web

Background Info
===
Before Firefox 52, extensions.gnome.org used to work out-of-the-box with GNOME
Shell because GNOME Shell provides a NPAPI plugin (Firefox no longer supports
those plugin). The NPAPI plugin is still included in GNOME Shell for Epiphany's
benefit since Epiphany has no support for WebExtensions.

The package name is because this package originally provided support for
the Chrome browser, but now other browsers have adopted the
WebExtensions API pioneered by Chrome.

Other Info
==
chrome-gnome-shell has two parts, a system helper that's provided in this
Ubuntu package and a WebExtension.

There's a Chrome/Chromium enterprise policy that automatically installs
the Chrome webextension for Chrome and Chromium. It can be found in

For Firefox, there is a banner when you first visit the site with a
button to install the required WebExtension. The browser does not need
to be restarted but the page needs to be refreshed.

It looks like chrome-gnome-shell has a background service that starts
when you first start your browser. The service continues to run even
after closing the browser.

** Affects: gnome-shell (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

** Description changed:

It is possible to enable and disable
extensions; uninstall extensions; and configure any extension
  preferences in gnome-tweak-tool (not currently

[Bug 1694186] Re: Touchpad / TrackPoint no longer work in Lubuntu 17.04

2017-06-02 Thread Brian Standing
Sadly, the educated guess did not help. I tried the 4.4 kernel and had
no luck. Short of loading a non-Unix OS, anyone have any idea about how
to test if this is a hardware fault?

Thanks for the assistance.
