[Bug 1700824] [NEW] [MIR] numactl (binary)

2017-06-27 Thread dann frazier
Public bug reported:

libnuma from the numactl source package was MIR'd in LP: #891232,
however the numactl binary is still in universe. I'd like to request
that the numactl binary also be considered for main. I work with users
of arm64 server platforms, where NUMA is increasingly common, and they
find these tools useful for setting scheduling/placement policies.

Per https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MainInclusionProcess:

"If a new source package contains only code which is already in main
(e.g., the result of a source package split or rename, or source
packages with a version in the name), it may not need a full review.
Submitting a bug with an explanation is sufficient."

However, since the numactl binary package was presumably always part of
the numactl source package, I'm not sure if the above exception applies.
Let me know if more information, such as a full MIR report, is required.

[Bug 1700823] [NEW] libvirt0 breaks libvirt-bin compiled from sources

2017-06-27 Thread César Morgan
Public bug reported:

The package libvirt0-1.3.1-1ubuntu10.10 included in Ubuntu 16.04 breaks
libvirt-bin 3.4+ compiled from official libvirt sources. It should be replaced
by a dummy package.
I've tested this with libvirt 3.4 and libvirt 3.5, both versions will fail if
libvirt0 is installed.

To reproduce:
1. Install qemu-kvm package, and virt-manager with all recommended
dependencies. libvirt0 gets automatically installed.
2. Download, compile and install libvirt 3.4+ from the official sources.
3. attempt to restart the libvirtd service.

Expected behavior:
The service should have worked.

What really happened:
The service failed to start without any useful information about why.

Temporary workaround:
1. forcefully uninstall libvirt0 ignoring dependencies: "dpkg -r
--ignore-depends=libvirt0 libvirt0"
2. reinstall the compiled version of libvirt (for good measure)
3. For each update: do "apt-get -f install" first, do the updates and uninstall
libvirt0 again.

Everything seems to be working fine without libvirt0, except of course,
APT, which wants to fix the dependency issue.

Suggested fix:
Make libvirt0 a metapackage, so it installs an updated version of libvirt.
3.4.0 is stable, and there's no special requirements to create a usable .deb
package.

[Bug 1588104] Re: Update to bugfix release 3.18.6 in Xenial (fix extensive CPU usage in some cases)

2017-06-27 Thread Amr Ibrahim
Thanks Jeremy for following up.

Yes, I'm now on 16.04 w/ Unity and willing to verify the fix.

Note: GPaste 3.18 supports building a unity appindicator. Apparently,
the Debian package did not build it. According to upstream: "If you also
want to build the unity application indicator, you'll have to pass
--enable-unity to configure."
https://github.com/Keruspe/GPaste/tree/gpaste-3.18

My question is, could the unity appindicator be built with the proposed
3.18.6 update?

[Bug 1700588] Re: samba package should prompt the user to create a Samba password when first installed (or re-use their existing one)

2017-06-27 Thread Andreas Hasenack
Thank you for filing this bug in Ubuntu.

Samba needs its own user/password database because essentially the
encryption mechanisms used during windows authentication are different
from what Linux uses.

How and where to store these databases is configurable and there is no
one-size-fits-all solution. Some installations are happy with Samba's
tdb local on disk database file. Others prefer to have users in LDAP.
Even when using a single backend like LDAP, however, there are still
separate attributes for windows and linux passwords. Or the
authentication might be delegated to Kerberos.

To create a samba user, it's usually not always just a matter of running
"smbpasswd -a". It depends on the backend and on each site's policies.
Furthermore, how would the samba package decide which users should be
added to the Samba database? What's "active user"? There are way too
many variables, and it's not Ubuntu's place to decide that. Samba is an
application on top of Ubuntu, and how it's used is up to the
administrator.

Could you please explain why Canonical is tracking user hardware per
default without user consent?

See /etc/update-motd.d/50-motd-news

e.g.

cpu : Intel(R)/Xeon(R)/CPU/E5-2650/0/@/2.00GHz

Why is this hidden behind useless messages like:

[Bug 1700816] [NEW] Micropolis shows garbled ingame graphics when on Wayland

2017-06-27 Thread amano
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

1) Choose Ubuntu Unity Session (Zesty; using X)
2) Open Micropolis
3) See that everything looks normal
4) log out and choose GNOME on Wayland session (make sure that Wayland is
actually used)
5) Open Micropolis again
6) See that all the buildings, streets and woods are missing, even the water.
Just plain soil is visible and occasionally trains (without rails).

Re: [Bug 1700812] [NEW] pam_cap is provided by the libpam-cap package on x86_64 xenial

2017-06-27 Thread Serge Hallyn
Note, the actual manpage makes no mention of the package. Which is
how it should be, as the manpage comes from upstream and not from
Ubuntu.

So if this is a bug, it is a bug against manpages.ubuntu.com.

[Bug 1700807] Re: virtualbox 5.1.22-dfsg-2 ADT test failure with linux 4.12.0-4.5

2017-06-27 Thread LocutusOfBorg
Hello, I already know the kernel patches that needs to be applied, but
no, I won't upload patches for an RC-not-yet-released kernel.

so please come back if you plan to release that kernel for artful,
otherwise I'll wait for it to become at least stable, because it should
even have some bugs that will prevent virtual machines from starting up.

[Bug 1700814] [NEW] Default capability of cap_setfcap+i should be set on setcap

2017-06-27 Thread Matthew Walker
Public bug reported:

If I grant a user (via pam_cap) cap_setfcap+i, I would then expect them
to be able to use setcap without sudo. setcap is not provided with any
default file capabilities however, so either the user has to sudo, or I
have to grant the setfcap capability to setcap with setcap.

In my mind, it would be reasonable to grant setfcap+i to setcap by
default on installation.

[Bug 1700812] [NEW] pam_cap is provided by the libpam-cap package on x86_64 xenial

2017-06-27 Thread Matthew Walker
Public bug reported:

The man page for pam_cap
(http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/xenial/man8/pam_cap.8.html) claims
that it is provided by the libcap2-bin package. This is incorrect, it is
actually provided by the libpam-cap package (which is recommended by

[Bug 1644057] Re: Excessive Disconnect unmatched entries from sshd

2017-06-27 Thread Nish Aravamudan
Sorry for the delay on my end.

Here is one upstream commit that is relevant:
https://sourceforge.net/p/logwatch/git/ci/0490a1c4ccf1b811bce0cd68dfce8a9e346d7648/

This will correct for: "Received disconnect from..." with a port on the
end.

Another upstream commit:
https://sourceforge.net/p/logwatch/git/ci/50cd9b06

This will correct for:

"Disconnected from..." with a port on the end

and

"Connection reset by..."

I can build (hopefully later today) a test package of logwatch with only
the sshd changes mentioned above. I will need to evaluate the latter
commit, as it includes a number of further changes than what is
explicitly requested in this bug.

[Bug 1700810] [NEW] aptdaemon's crash.py file may no longer be working

2017-06-27 Thread Brian Murray
Public bug reported:

aptdaemon includes a file named crash.py which is supposed to create
apport problem reports for a given crash. However, searching through bug
attachments for aptdaemon bug reports I don't see any with the key
"TransactionRole" in any recent bug reports.

 $ grep -r TransactionRole *
bug-1058886/Description.txt:TransactionRole: role-commit-packages
bug-1158395/Description.txt:TransactionRole: role-install-file

bug-1306498/Description.txt:TransactionRole: role-pk-query
bug-1380290/apport_crash.log:TransactionRole: role-pk-query

It seems likely that either "trans" is null, or something is wrong with
aptdaemon's crash handler.

[Bug 1694730] Re: /etc/update-motd.d/50-motd-news calls home on each ssh connection

2017-06-27 Thread Dustin Kirkland 
Hi there. By design, it does not fetch motd.ubuntu.com with every ssh
session.

Rather, there's a systemd timer that runs, asynchronously once about a
minute after boot, and then every 12 hours (plus/minus a random interval
up to an hour). That systemd timer updates a cache file,
/var/cache/motd, in the background.

At login, it just concatenates the /var/cache/motd file.

Note that it's easy to disable, or change to a different MOTD server, by
