[Bug 1512344] Re: [Master Bug] Package nginx-* failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1 (due to "Address in Use" issue)

2017-07-18 Thread Thomas Ward
Noel: Ask apt and dpkg how they work, and part of the installation post-
install *tests* is that it installs and starts with a default config.
This has always been a part of how Debian works.

We also get ***many*** bugs filed for this master process here - that's
why this master bug exists so we can close newer bugs as a duplicate of
this one here to *show* that it's a "Won't Fix" and "Not our concern"
bug.

(Sometimes we discover huge issues with these kinds of bugs, but that's
usually rare).

[Bug 1705137] [NEW] ACPI platform nics names change after install

2017-07-18 Thread dann frazier
Public bug reported:

systemd in xenial-proposed has support for predictable network
interfaces names for ACPI-described platform devices. However, the
latest d-i in xenial-proposed was built with the previous systemd
upload. This has a nasty side-effect that the NICs will have one name
during install (e.g. eth1) but, after reboot, will have a different name
(e.g. enahisic1). Further, if you used one of these NICs as your install
interface, the network will fail to come up post-install.

[Bug 1512344] Re: [Master Bug] Package nginx-* failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1 (due to "Address in Use" issue)

2017-07-18 Thread Noel McLoughlin
Are't we confusing package management with service management? The
purpose of packaging is to bundle software into a deployable unit for
consumption by a package manager. RFC1340 is an internet standard saying
"World Wide Web HTTP" can be served from port 80, and is neutral on
service vendor. Until an RFC is published stating nginx, a service
vendor, owns port 80 this remains a bug.

Keep package management and service management separate. Package nginx
into a deployable unit consumed by package managers and measure
packaging success/failure in those terms.

Do not package nginx into a deployable service unit for consumption by a
service manager, because this is beyond the scope of packaging.
packages and services are different concepts. If nginx.service
subprocess fails, why is this a concern for nginx packaging? Just print
a message and get the package installed, that is the expectation. There
are frameworks for service management/availability which can handle
service stuff. Bottom line, this is a really really bad bug and not
fixing goes against principles of choice, FOSS, etc.

[Bug 1705129] [NEW] Highlighted items have a white text but keep a black arrow

2017-07-18 Thread fcole90
Public bug reported:

In some menus, like the one in the picture, the highlighted items have a
white text but a black arrow. In this specific screenshot I'm referring
to the Tool text with the black arrow on the side. I think it would be
more consistent and visually pleasant if they could have the same color.

[Bug 1705123] [NEW] [Zesty] Fixes to iommu on arm64 to improve IO performance

2017-07-18 Thread Manoj Iyer
Public bug reported:

[Impact]
With SMMU page translation mode enabled. Several inefficiencies on ARM SMMUv3
driver has been identified. As a result IO BW is severely impacted.

[Test]
Running iperf on mellanox Connect-x4 cards capable of doing 40Gbps BW connected
back to back we get only about 15Gbps.

iperf -c 192.168.5.5 --bind 192.168.5.10 -P 5 -w 3.1M

Client connecting to 192.168.5.5, TCP port 5001

[ 5] 0.0-10.0 sec 2.00 GBytes 1.72 Gbits/sec
[SUM] 0.0-10.0 sec 18.4 GBytes 15.8 Gbits/sec

[Fix]
After applying the patches listed below from linux-next, we were able to get
throughputs of 35+ Gbps. These patches are currently in linux-next and in line
for 4.13-rc.

iommu/io-pgtable-arm: Use dma_wmb() instead of wmb() when publishing table
iommu/arm-smmu-v3: Remove io-pgtable spinlock
iommu/arm-smmu: Remove io-pgtable spinlock
iommu/io-pgtable-arm-v7s: Support lockless operation
iommu/io-pgtable-arm: Support lockless operation
iommu/io-pgtable: Introduce explicit coherency
iommu/io-pgtable-arm-v7s: Refactor split_blk_unmap
iommu/io-pgtable-arm: Improve split_blk_unmap
iommu/io-pgtable-arm-v7s: Check table PTEs more precisely
iommu/io-pgtable-arm-v7s: constify dummy_tlb_ops.
iommu/io-pgtable-arm-v7s: Check for leaf entry before dereferencing it
iommu/io-pgtable-arm-v7s: Add support for the IOMMU_PRIV flag
iommu/io-pgtable-arm: Avoid shift overflow in block size
iommu/io-pgtable-arm: Check for leaf entry before dereferencing it
iommu/io-pgtable-arm: add support for the IOMMU_PRIV flag
iommu: add IOMMU_PRIV attribute

[Regression Potential]
These patches cherry-pick cleanly ontop of Zesty (4.10), and the patches are
limited to ARM SMMU and pagetable fixes. The patches were tested on QDF2400
system with mlx connect-X4 40G cards.

[Bug 1684240] Re: Mouse pointer behaves strangely

2017-07-18 Thread Ricardo Sanz
I'm also affected by this bug.

I have a GeForce GTX 1060 Mobile video card, using nvidia-375
(375.66-0ubuntu0.17.04.1) package on Kubuntu 17.04 with backports
repository (Plasma 5.10.3).

It seems that the area around the mouse pointer is not redrawn properly.

Problem persists with compositor enabled and disabled.

The only workaround is what dskd (mark-p--sanders) said: use XRender as
rendering backend (but I think performance is affected).

You are trying to install grub to a disk partitioned with GPT. To do
this you either need to create a 1 mb bios_grub partition to boot in
bios mode, or a 100mb EFI system partition to boot in EFI mode.

[Bug 1704223] Re: Merge tilix from Debian

2017-07-18 Thread fossfreedom
this patch bumps the VTE version number to beyond what the current VTE
version is in artful.

Also this patch readds the terminix transitional package

Built against artful-proposed, installed Ubuntu Budgie 32 bit daily,
upgraded with ALL proposed packages and then installed the built
package.

rebooted. Confirmed Tilix with this patch correctly starts up OK.

[Bug 1123272] Re: high cpu usage on download (not optimised SHA256, SHA512, SHA1)

2017-07-18 Thread Julian Andres Klode
Of course you don't have a CPU bottleneck with curl, it does not run 3
or 4 hashes over everything it downloads. APT needs to hash its
downloads to ensure they are secure, and it uses all available hashes to
do so, so if one hash's security is compromised, we can still hopefully
still rely on the others.

And the topic of this bug report is indeed hash CPU usage, and I
compared our CPU usage on a 1 GB test file in a tmpfs to the CPU usage
of OpenSSL and Nettle. So this test operates on a data size 5 times
higher than the usual packages and under optimal conditions to evaluate
how fast we can hash.

The test shows that on a 1 Gbit/s connection you'll likely be throttled
slightly at a comparable CPU (assuming the connection reaches about 800
Mbit/s, that is, 80% efficiency). If you have a data rate of about 500
Mbit/s, you will likely be fine (not counting parallel downloads).

If there are other problems reducing the download speeds, these are
separate bugs. This one covers the overhead of hashing, nothing else.

BTW: The original bug report talks about 20% CPU usage on a 5 year old
CPU, that seems entirely reasonable and not really an issue. If your
bandwidth is high, you'll have higher CPU usage for a shorter time (like
100% for 5 seconds or so).

[Bug 1705107] [NEW] The boot of this kernel crashed.

2017-07-18 Thread Thierry Gagnebin
Public bug reported:

After installing the kernel linux 4.4.0-83-generic, I try to reboot. The system
stayed for a long time with a black screen without disk activity. I tried to
reboot with the same kernel and I get a lot of messages as show in the attached
file KernelBug.zip, file P1050781.jpg. To write this bug report, I used an old
version of the system as shown in P1050782.jpg. Parameter system details are in
Capture du 2017-07-18 21-11-18.png.
I tried to boot with the recovery mode without success.
When I try to use "ubuntu-bug linux" I have this Error message: see Capture du

Thank you for your help.

Best regards.

[Bug 1123272] Re: high cpu usage on download (not optimised SHA256, SHA512, SHA1)

2017-07-18 Thread Travis Johnson
This seems to be a bit of a bikeshed on specific implementation options.
The problem here is downloads pin the CPU, and in my personal experience
I can download the same files via curl with nothing close to a CPU
bottleneck.

I do not know how you benchmarked APT but this may be a case of a micro
benchmark not properly representing the problem.

[Bug 1689825] Re: gnome-keyring not unlocked on boot

2017-07-18 Thread jose
I've not tried it yet, but I'm sure that uninstalling dbus-user-session
works as a workaround. what concerns me is what consequences will this
have. I checked 16.10 and 17.04 and both have dbus-user-session
installed by default. When I install chrome I don't seem to get the same
issues. I haven't installed flatpak to see if that recreates the problem
on 17. So how does removing dbus-user-session solve this problem?

Can you test this kernel and see if it resolves this bug?

[Bug 1704706] Re: Installation and removal repeatedly fail

Granted. I tried running as sudo and that didn't respond with an error
however systemctl still shows smbd.service as failed. Installation
still shows exit error 1

now what?
