[Bug 1706939] Re: A live session can't be shut down due to "[ *** ] (2 of 2) A start job is running for ... (21s / no limit)"

2017-09-06 Thread Doug McMahon
Yep, this is really messy..
Did 7 boot ups > restarts & got 4 different results

Twice got normal restarts that also included the pop up about 'remove media,
press enter'
Twice got no pop up but the shutdown was text based & 'hung' on no particular
errors, ctrl+c set it going again to a completed shutdown
Twice got the 'A start job is running for Hold' hang
Once got the 'Wait for Network` hang (- only session where I enabled wifi..

The systemd timeout ones are the most egregious as they're no limit.
Worst case scenario, is there any way to set all live session start/stop job's
to a limited timeout? (30 sec or so max

I don't get it. Is this patch supposed to make things better? It just
made my button *not work*. Is there a patch for the patch on the way, or
do I need to rollback and recompile things in order to get rid of your

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Reviewing your log files attached to this bug report it
seems that there is a problem with your installation media (CD/DVD).
You can verify the integrity of the Ubuntu ISO files you downloaded by
following the instructions at

[Bug 735665] Re: Impossible to disable middle-click paste without breaking the middle mouse button

2017-09-06 Thread Mathew Hodson
Support for changing this was added to GTK.

You can create the file ~/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini with these
contents:

[Settings]
gtk-enable-primary-paste=true

Or you can just use gnome-tweak-tool, which exposes this setting as a
check box.

There is a GNOME bug https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=665193
for changing the default.

[Bug 1715527] Re: The installation option to install third-party software silently fails if you didn't connect to the internet on the previous install screen

2017-09-06 Thread Daniel van Vugt
OK, it's just because I don't allow machines to connect to the internet
during install.

So allowing the user to check the box which is then ignored is
misleading at best. But see also bug 694328.

- The installation option to install third-party software doesn't install any

[Bug 1708130] rcu-Migrate-callbacks-earlier-in-the-CPU-offline-timeline.BACKPORT.patch

2017-09-06 Thread bugproxy
--- Comment on attachment From mauri...@br.ibm.com 2017-08-16 18:20
EDT---

Hi Joseph,

> Can you post a note when the patch from Paul lands in mainline or
linux-next?

Ingo pulled Paul's patch into tip.git, and it's now in linux-next.git.

rcu: Migrate callbacks earlier in the CPU-offline timeline
git.kernel.org/tip/tip/c/a58163d8ca2c8d288ee9f95989712f98473a5ac2
git.kernel.org/next/linux-next/c/a58163d8ca2c8d288ee9f95989712f98473a5ac2

Paul wrote a backport to 4.11 (attached), which applies cleanly on
linux-hwe[-edge].
I am building it now on top of linux-hwe-edge (v4.11) and linux-hwe (v4.10) for
testing.

cheers,
Mauricio

[Bug 1715527] [NEW] The installation option to install third-party software doesn't install any third-party software

2017-09-06 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Public bug reported:

The installation option (checkbox) to install third-party software
doesn't actually install third-party software. At most it enables the
option to install third-party software manually, later.

I was expecting to see the third-party software installed on my first
reboot, or at least after the first update. But still not installed. No
mp3 packages, no libva packages, no vaapi packages.

I had to manually install 'ubuntu-restricted-addons' in the end to get
what I was expecting.

[Bug 1715521] [NEW] Video not shown in full in VLC, although shows correctly in YouTube

2017-09-06 Thread el_gallo_azul
Public bug reported:

Yahoo! Mail was not working this morning, because Yahoo had carried out
an "upgrade". For that reason, I decided to record the fault using
application "recordMyDesktop". I did that, and when I played the
resulting .ogv video back in VLC, only part of my desktop was shown.
That has happened before, so I finally decided to report that bug as
well today. See https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gtk-
recordmydesktop/+bug/1715517.

I then loaded the (apparently) faulty video to YouTube, because I had
recorded it a couple of times, with some changes to settings, but the
result was the same when I played it back, and I thought the video would
have some value in showing the Yahoo! Mail error anyway.

However, when I watched the uploaded video in YouTube
(https://youtu.be/3XtiMXaD_Q4), my full desktop is in fact shown. When I
play the video in VLC, only part of the video area is shown (see
screenshot of video playing back in VLC: https://imgur.com/ngJTrco).

[Bug 1711283] Comment bridged from LTC Bugzilla

2017-09-06 Thread bugproxy
--- Comment From l...@us.ibm.com 2017-09-06 21:17 EDT---
Hi,

I happen to stumble on this bug, while I'm about to open another bug.
The issue seems to stem from the build in powerpc directory. If you do
a 'make all' in testing/selftests/powerpc on either 4.12 and 4.13
upstream kernel, it'll fail.

[Bug 1712047] Re: SRU: Budgie-Welcome to support 2.7 series of webkit2gtk

2017-09-06 Thread Jeremy Bicha
** Description changed:

  [Impact]
- In discussion with Jeremy Bicha
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/budgie-welcome/+bug/1713210), the
2.7 or latest version of webkit2gtk is due to be SRU'd to 16.04 & 17.04.
+ In discussion with Jeremy Bicha
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/budgie-welcome/+bug/1713210),
webkit2gtk 2.18 will soon be SRU'd to 16.04 & 17.04.

During artful testing, budgie-welcome segmentation faulted when running
- with the 2.7 series of webkit2gtk.
+ with the webkit2gtk 2.18 betas (2.17.*).

An initial workaround fix was applied to artful (LP: #1713210). Later
discussions with upstream webkit2gtk indicated that the real reason why
the segmentation fault occurred was due to calling GTK+ calls whilst
inside a python thread. All GTK+ calls must be performed on the main
  loop thread.

The impact of this issue is that the initial workaround fix for artful
is no longer required and can be rewritten as recommended by upstream.

The additional impact of this issue is that the 17.04 version of budgie-
welcome would be similarly affected once new SRU'd version of webkit2gtk
  enters the archive.

  [Test Case]
The code streams have slightly diverged so its not possible to cherry-pick
the same patch from artful to zesty.
Thus the debdiffs are subtly different between the two versions of
budgie-welcome. The same principles have occurred to make the two debdiff's -
searching for direct webkit calls and converting these to equivalent calls but
on the main thread.

Artful testcase: As per this bug-report, perform the following actions that
are known to end with a segmentation fault.
  1. open the recommendation page
  2. open the budgie-applets page
  3. open the getting started page
  4. Install and remove a web-browser from the getting started page
  5. Install an application from the recommendation page
  6. Install and remove a budgie-applet from the budgie-applets page

- Zesty testcase: With the current 2.6 series of webkit2gtk, perform the
following actions to ensure they continue to work - i.e. regression tests
+ Zesty testcase: With the current 2.16 series of webkit2gtk, perform the
following actions to ensure they continue to work - i.e. regression tests
  1. open the recommendation page
  2. open the getting started page
  3. Install and remove a web-browser from the getting started page
  4. Install an application from the recommendation page

- Upgrade Zesty with a backported version of the current artful 2.7 series of
webkit2gtk (i.e. the version that would cause segmentation faults).
+ Upgrade Zesty with a backported version of the current artful 2.18 series of
webkit2gtk (i.e. the version that would cause segmentation faults).
Repeat the above Zesty test case to ensure that segmentation faults do not
occur

  [Regression Potential]
It is possible that not all GTK+ based calls from a thread have been
converted correctly and thus segmentation faults will still occur.
The mitigation here is that Artful is still in its beta test phase and any

[Bug 1712663] Re: Visioneer RoadWarrior Scanner [Sane]

2017-09-06 Thread mike
I have the same scanner.
I tried a couple of scanning programs, one of them gave a 5 char cal file, like
this one here.
simple-scan did not like it either.

Another program had a gui with a calibrate function and it coughed up a
65k file, it seems to work for simple scan as well.

Try xscan.

[Bug 1715517] Re: recordMyDesktop doesn't record the full screen any more

2017-09-06 Thread el_gallo_azul
My apologies. I just watched the version of the recording tyhat I
uploaded to YouTube today, and sure enough, the full screen is shown.

Before I uploaded it to YouTube, I watched it in VLC media player
(version 2.2.2 Weatherwax), and that's where it appeared that only part
of the screen had been recorded. Now it looks like a VLC media player
bug.

[Bug 1715517] [NEW] recordMyDesktop doesn't record the full screen any more

2017-09-06 Thread el_gallo_azul
Public bug reported:

For a couple of years, this application worked perfectly. I mainly use
it to report bugs to websites and bugs in applications. Today, I want to
use it to let Yahoo know that Yahoo Mail is not working.

The problem is that the full screen is not recorded - this problem
started a year or two ago. A smaller window within the screen is
recorded, which includes the top of the screen, but the recorded area
seems to be about the top centre, such that the left-hand side, the
right-hand side, and the bottom of the screen are all outside the
boundaries of the recording.

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System

Description:Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS

2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy
pkgname' or by checking in Software Center

[Bug 1715519] [NEW] bnx2x_attn_int_deasserted3:4323 MC assert!

2017-09-06 Thread Daniel Axtens
Public bug reported:

(This bug provides a place to track the progress of this issue upstream
and then in to Ubuntu.)

A ppc64le system runs as a guest under PowerVM. This guest has a bnx2x
card attached, and uses openvswitch to bridge an ibmveth interface for
traffic from other LPARs.

We see the following crash sometimes when running netperf:
May 10 17:16:32 tuk6r1phn2 kernel: bnx2x:
[bnx2x_attn_int_deasserted3:4323(enP24p1s0f2)]MC assert!

[bnx2x_panic_dump:923(enP24p1s0f2)]begin crash dump -
... (dump of registers follows) ...

Subsequent debugging reveals that the packets causing the issue come
through the ibmveth interface - from the AIX LPAR. The veth protocol is
'special' - communication between LPARs on the same chassis can use very
large (64k) frames to reduce overhead. Normal networks cannot handle
such large packets, so traditionally, the VIOS partition would signal to
the AIX partitions that it was 'special', and AIX would send regular,
ethernet-sized packets to VIOS, which VIOS would then send out.

This signalling between VIOS and AIX is done in a way that is not
standards-compliant, and so was never made part of Linux. Instead, the
Linux driver has always understood large frames and passed them up the
network stack.

In some cases (e.g. with TCP), multiple TCP segments are coalesced into
one large packet. In Linux, this goes through the generic receive
offload code, using a similar mechanism to GSO. These segments can be
very large which presents as a very large MSS (maximum segment size) or
gso_size.

Normally, the large packet is simply passed to whatever network
application on Linux is going to consume it, and everything is OK.

However, in this case, the packets go through Open vSwitch, and are then
passed to the bnx2x driver. The bnx2x driver/hardware supports TSO and
GSO, but with a restriction: the maximum segment size is limited to
around 9700 bytes. Normally this is more than adequate as jumbo frames
are limited to 9000 bytes. However, if a large packet with large (>9700
byte) TCP segments arrives through ibmveth, and is passed to bnx2x, the
hardware will panic.

Turning off TSO prevents the crash as the kernel resegments the data and
assembles the packets in software. This has a performance cost.

Clearly at the very least, bnx2x should not crash in this case.

One patch to do this was sent upstream:
https://www.spinics.net/lists/netdev/msg452932.html

Check if there is an upstream bug on

using it in Ubuntu and it does seem to vary between GNOME Software

Can you see if this bug still exists with the 16.04.3 release? I'm
thinking it should not, since prior testing showed that 4.9 and newer
kernels did not have the bug.

[Bug 1705707] Re: Xenial update to 4.4.78 stable release

2017-09-06 Thread Justin King-Lacroix
Hi all,

The binfmt_elf change in
https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/eab09532d40090698b05a07c1c87f39fdbc5fab5
broke Address Sanitizer. It was included in the Xenial (and Trusty-LTS-
Xenial) kernel in this change. This broke us.

https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/c715b72c1ba406f133217b509044c38d8e714a37
reverts this change in order to unbreak Address Sanitizer. Any chance it
can land soon? (Is there already a bug for this?)

Justin

[Bug 1299512] Re: gnome-keyring-daemon crashed with SIGABRT in g_assertion_message()

2017-09-06 Thread Laza
Hi to all.
Have just recently changed from Ubuntu Xenial amd64 Unity 16.04.3 LTS to
Ubuntu Gnome Xenial amd64 16.04.3 LTS and have started having this "System
program problem detected" keyring error on start up (gnome-keyring-daemon
crashed with SIGABRT in g_assertion_message() ). Have already noticed it as
reported, but because I have used Xenial Unity amd64 LTS 16.04.3 since it`s
release and many other flavours without having any issue with the keyring
error, thought it would be worth mentioning, Have also used many different
release versions of the NVIDIA drivers as well without any effect.
Am currently running with NVIDIA binary driver - version 375.66 from nvidia-375
(proprietary, tested) and will change back over to the X.Org X Server --Nouveau
driver to see if issue persists on future boot ups.
Thanks to all.

[Bug 1676912] Re: Kernel 4.9+ regression: Suspend - Freezing of tasks failed

2017-09-06 Thread jzacsh
fwiw, this has been happening to my laptop for a couple months (i just
now had the time to look into the logs). i've had the laptop for a year
(samsung ativ book 9) without problems before this.

I get continuous log output from the kernel for as long as the lid is
closed, and my laptop is unrecoverable until hard rebooted (eg: close my
laptop, stick in bag, then 4 hours later I'll have 16M of logs[1]; 400+
log-lines a second).

It seems everything[2] failing -- NetworkManager, sd-resolve, syncthing
-- to shutdown is networking related, at least today. I'll start looking
at this more in the future, as this happens to me (6 boots ago was only
`cups-browsed`).

I'm on 4.10.0-34-generic, and Ubuntu 16.04.1.

Please let me know if I can add anything useful to this thread.

[1]: measuring the output of: journalctl --catalog --boot -1 | sed -n
'/kernel:\ Freezing\ of\ tasks\ failed\ after/,$p'
[2]: i'm guessing here; not much experience reading these logs. this is based
on the output of: journalctl --catalog --boot -1 | grep -A 1 -E 'kernel:\
*Freezing\ of\ tasks\ failed\ after' | grep -v 'Freezing.of.tasks.failed' |
cut -f 6 -d ' ' | sort | uniq # (ie: looking at the reported process just after
the kernel "freezing failed" line).

[Bug 1715167] Re: FTBFS in Artful

2017-09-06 Thread Bas Couwenberg
Don't disable 11_reproducible_dh.h.patch, regenerate the dh.h with the
openssl version in the distribution instead:

 quilt push 11_reproducible_dh.h.patch
 openssl dhparam -C 2048 | awk '/^-/ {exit} {print}' > include/dh.h
 quilt refresh

[Bug 1706500] Re: Update snap store name "Snap Store"

2017-09-06 Thread Robert Ancell
Decision was made to use "Snap Store" instead of "Ubuntu Store".

** Summary changed:

- Update snap store name "Ubuntu Store"
+ Update snap store name "Snap Store"

** Description changed:

  [Impact]
Currently various things are shown for the snap "Source" field:
  3.20: "Ubuntu Snappy Store" - hard-coded
  3.22 / 3.24: "dashboard.snapcraft.io" - is inferred from the snap metadata
The officially decided store name is "Ubuntu Store" and this should show in
this field.

  [Test Case]
  1. Open GNOME Software.
  2. Install a snap (e.g. moon-buggy).
  3. Select installed tab.
  4. Look at the "Source" field when looking at the app details.

  Expected result:
- The source is "Ubuntu Store"
+ The source is "Snap Store"

  Observed result:
  The source is something else.

  [Regression Potential]
Small risk of breaking existing code.
