[Bug 1722985] Re: Removing the extension Ubuntu Dock uninstalls ubuntu-desktop

2017-10-11 Thread Didier Roche
Setting up as won't fix (I already think I've answered you on my blog
post comments on that particular topic):

We are going to have assumptions on the ubuntu-session that the ubuntu
experience == having the dock on the session, hence the dep from the
seed (like you can't remove gdm without removing ubuntu-desktop).

If you want to customize freely your session, we introduced to that effect the
vanilla session, where no extension is mandatory by default, and you can do
what you want there. The dock won't be enabled in that session, you can even
remove it, which will remove the "ubuntu-dekstop" metapackage and can choose
your own theme, extenstions and so on.
For this, just install gnome-session. We keep control over our ubuntu-session,
but let you choose and cutomize the gnome-session or just use upstream default
behavior (which was never possible before 17.10).

[Bug 1722998] [NEW] VMware memory allocation process ... HUGE RESOURCE HIT ?

2017-10-11 Thread AIAMUZZ
Public bug reported:

Hi,

I am writing this with concerns on the way RAM(memory) is handled by the
same software(VMware Workstation) across different versions of the
Ubuntu OS.

I am however unsure if the concern i am reporting here is actually a Bug
... or ... a feature that has been withdrawn on purpose ... or ... a
feature that's got overlooked from kernel to kernel updates.

How did i stumble upon this issue ?

My primary daily driver OS is Ubuntu 14.04 (ker. 3.13), i use VMware
workstation on this host to run Windows 7 to run my work software which
does not have a linux version. While my VM guest*Windows 7) has been
allocated 8GB of RAM the RAM usage on my Host shows no more than 3-4GB.

I while back i had installed Ubuntu 16.04 on an adjacent partition and
tried running a copy of the exact same VM guest and to my shock saw that
right from boot the entire 8GB of RAM gets blocked on the host system.

What was earlier 3-4 GB of RAM consumption in Ubuntu 14.04 now shot up
to a whopping 10-11GB in Ubuntu 16.04. A HUGE resource hit.

Now i am test driving Deepin OS i find the same resource hit on this OS
too just like the one experienced on Ubuntu 16.04 ... 10-12 GB of RAM is
affected the moment i boot up my vm machine. I am using an exact same
copy from Ubuntu 14.04 to run even here.

What additional test's have i done to probe this issue ?

I have tested this HUGE RESOURCE HIT on the following versions ... I
used the exact same version of VMware Workstation on my test OS's as
well as the latest version of VMware workstation, following are the
findings.

software version tested on ...

VMware Workstation 12.1.0
VMware Workstation 14

OS versions tested on ...

Ubuntu 14.04 (Ker. 3.13)
Ubuntu 15.04 (Ker. 3.19)
Ubuntu 15.10 (Ker. 4.2)

tests on the above OS's show that the memory is efficiently handled and the
overall memory consumption(both Host and Guest VM included)is roughly around 4
GB even though the VM is configured with 8GB of RAM

UbuntuGnome 16.04 (Ker. 4.4)
Deepin 15.4.1 (Ker. 4.9)
UbuntuGnome 17.04 (Ker. 4.10)

However my tests on these OS resulted in a HUGE RESOURCE HIT ... the
overall memory consumption(both Host and Guest VM included) here has
been a WHOPPING 10-12GB.

What proof do you have of this inconsistency ?

I am attaching a screenshot with the memory consumed marked side by
side.

I have Deepin OS 15.4.1(Ker. 4.9) and Ubuntu 14.04(Ker. 3.13) on my system ...
one demonstrating the resource hog i am reporting ... and ... the other
demonstrating the efficient use of system resources.

So if you require any logs or commands to be run out of both this
environments to further probe this resource leakage please let me know
the direct commands and i'll provide the respective outputs to help you
identify the issue.

PS : I am not a geek but rather consider myself as a power user, hence
direct commands to collect additional info out of the 2 environments
would help.

thanks for looking.

[Bug 1722808] Re: update to 2.10.1 point release

2017-10-11 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Tests with the ppa at [1] show no new regression (only a few known issues
unrelated to the change - but those were not expected to be fixed by the stable
release, need test adaptions to the new qemu actually).
To be sure I ran the tests twice, all goods (and the known bads) reproducible.

That said the stable release can be uploaded into Artful to fix at least
all the issues covered in that.

[Bug 292676] Re: Thunderbird doesn't play any sound on notification

2017-10-11 Thread SunBear
Problem: I just discovered that thunderbird 52.4.0 (64bit) on Ubuntu
Xenial can't play a wav file for new mail. The default new mail sound
can be play though.

Solution: I installed "Sound Converter" from Ubuntu Software and used it
to covert my .wav file to .ogg format (mentioned by @doxland) and tried
it on Thunderbird. It works...:) Thanks @doxland for sharing about
.ogg format. I did not know such a sound format had existed.

Hope the Thunderbird team could make this fix seamless or at least
inform user to use only .ogg format sound file in Thunderbird.

[Bug 1722987] [NEW] screen brightness control is backwards

2017-10-11 Thread Scott Palmer
Public bug reported:

Increase brightness key on my keyboard (func-f3) makes the screen more dim.
Decrease brightness key on my keyboard (func-f2) makes the screen more bright.
The gnome-shell on-screen display of brightness is backwards also.

I see on google search results that this was a problem with older
kernels. I guess the problem is back / possible regression.

[Bug 1722985] [NEW] Removing the extension Ubuntu Dock uninstalls ubuntu-desktop

2017-10-11 Thread 1LinuxGuy
Public bug reported:

In the Ubuntu session, if you only want to remove the extension Ubuntu
Dock, it also removes the package ubuntu-desktop.

Why removing only one extension would do that ?

Do both need to be tied ?

Earlier, it was possible to remove the extension only, and the meta
package ubuntu-desktop was not affected.

I understand the Ubuntu branding with the Dock on the left, etc. But
many Gnome users will try to install different extensions anyway, and
when they'll see that Ubuntu doesn't let them do that easily, or that it
breaks stuff, I fear a backlash for Ubuntu.

It's okay to personalize the desktop, but don't lock it or make it
difficult to customize. Linux is about choice. Please consider.

Thanks.

[Bug 1722953] Re: Builder 3.26: Re-enable terminal plugin

2017-10-11 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package gnome-builder - 3.26.1-1ubuntu1

---
gnome-builder (3.26.1-1ubuntu1) artful; urgency=medium

  * Sync with Debian. Remaining changes:
- debian/control.in:
  + Lower libgit2-glib-1.0-dev Build-Depends to 0.24 since Ubuntu
doesn't have a newer version yet
+ Depend on gir1.2-git2-glib-1.0 instead of renamed gir1.2-ggit-1.0
- Add revert-require-libgit2-glib25.patch:
+ needed to build with the older version
  * Rebase and re-enable revert-require-vte*.patch (LP: #1722953):
- Patches needed to build with Ubuntu's vte2.91 which is not built
  with pcre2. See bug 163.
  * Dropped change: Disable terminal. No longer needed with above change.

gnome-builder (3.26.1-1) unstable; urgency=medium

  * New upstream release
  * debian/control.in: Bump the build-dependencies
  * Add git_protect-against-spurious-builds.patch:
- Cherry-pick fix for excessive build notifications
  * Add fix-build-with-multiarch.patch, modify gnome-builder.install:
- Install Ide.py to the correct non-multiarch directory
  * Bump Standards-Version to 4.1.1

[Bug 1722978] [NEW] Subcategories Empty after Viewing Application Details

2017-10-11 Thread Steffan Byrne
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu Artful Aardvark (development branch)
Release:17.10

gnome-software Version: 3.26.1-0ubuntu1

I open gnome-software, select a category and view an application in a
subcategory. I navigate back using the button in the GUI and then select
a different subcategory. I see a blank screen instead of the
applications in that subcategory. If I resize the window, the
applications appear.

[Bug 1722778] Re: System frequently becomes completely unresponsive due to thrashing

2017-10-11 Thread jeremy-list
My computer cannot boot the v4.14-rc4 kernel because the amd64 package is a
failed build and my motherboard does not support 32 bit operating systems.
Running the v4.14rc3 mainline kernel I was unable to connect to the internet,
(so could not get firefox to use enough memory to reproduce the bug), but the
attached C++ program made my computer become completely unresponsive in under a
second.

[Bug 1683761] Re: undefined symbol: tgetent

2017-10-11 Thread josergc
In case of this helps: I installed the libnative-platform-
jni_0.11-5_amd64.deb package 1+ month ago because I was getting the same
problem in kubuntu 17.04. I remember there have been software upgrades
since then. Today, I have tried to compile and the error was back. So
that, to fix the problem, I had to reinstall the libnative-platform-
jni_0.11-5_amd64.deb package.

[Bug 1720149] Re: gnome-shell segv on wake from display or system sleep

2017-10-11 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks. Unfortunately it seems that crash file is not one of the
convenient ones with a readable stack trace built in so we need to
submit it for processing. Please run this command on the original
machine:

ubuntu-bug /path/to/_usr_bin_gnome-shell.1000.crash

I am making this bug private while the file remains attached, for
security.

[Bug 1718552] Re: gnome-shell uses lots of memory

2017-10-11 Thread Ads20000
1LinuxGuy what do you think it is that's causing Ubuntu's distribution
of GNOME Shell to take up more RAM/CPU? What change in the Pop!_OS PPA
do you think is making it work better for them? The different GTK theme?
As Sebastien Bacher says, do you get the same bug on Ubuntu's vanilla
GNOME session (use `sudo apt install gnome-session` then log into the
session since that uses Adwaita instead of Ambiance/Radiance?).

[Bug 1721852] Re: JavaFX support is in upstream OpenJDK 9 but missing in Ubuntu OpenJDK 9

2017-10-11 Thread Emmanuel Bourg
I eventually managed to build OpenJFX 9 with our openjdk-9 package. But
I now realize that integrating it into the JRE isn't going to be as
simple as it was for OpenJFX 8. I'll start a thread on debian-java to
discuss the options.

In the meantime I pushed my work in progress here:

https://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/pkg-java/openjfx9.git
