[Bug 1727452] Re: Cannot calculate the upgrade from 16.04 to 17.04

2017-10-25 Thread Sarang-manohar
I tired purging ppa's using sudo apt-get purge .

After which the installation progressed all the way till "Installing the
upgrades". Then I received another error as detailed below.

"Could not install '/var/cahce/apt/archives/dictionaries-
common_1.27.2_all.deb

The upgrade will continue but the '/var/cahce/apt/archives/dictionaries-
common_1.27.2_all.deb' package may not be in a working state. Please
consider raising a bug'

unable to clean up mess surrounding './var/lib/ispell/RADME' before
installing another version: Read-only file system'

At this point, I tried taking a screenshot but the Sreenshot app wasn't
starting up. Neither Chrome nor Mozilla was starting up.

I hit "OK" after that but then I got another message saying the
installation was not complete and it will roll back to the original
state.

Then I received a message saying the rollback wasn't successful and the
system may be unstable.

I restarted the system. During restart, I ended up on Busybox command
line screen.

I ran "exit" command and then ran fsck /dev/mapper/ubuntu--vg-root.
Fixed all the issues. Then rebooted the system. I entered the password
to crypt the hard drive. Post which the OS load seems to be stuck on a
black screen with only mouse cursor and nothing else. The cursor seems
to respond to input but nothing else happens.

[Bug 1727614] [NEW] Directory package-data-downloads/partial should belong to user _apt

2017-10-25 Thread Adrien Beau
Public bug reported:

For several versions now, apt has introduced a system user named _apt.
When downloading files, it tries to switch to this user in order to
limit the attack surface; downloading files as root is quite simply
dangerous. If the user _apt cannot write to the target directory, then
apt remains root, does the download just fine, but prints an ominous
warning.

Package update-notifier has such a directory, used to handle package
data downloads (Flash, Microsoft Core Fonts, etc.). Currently, the
ominous warning is printed every time those files are downloaded using
command-line apt or aptitude. (Which in the case of Flash, is quite
often.)

Doing a chmod _apt /var/lib/update-notifier/package-data-
downloads/partial should solve the issue and improve security. However,
since the _apt user is created in postinst, it receives a different user
id on each system, so the chmod should be done in postinst.

Ubuntu release: 16.04
Source package: update-notifier
Package version: 3.168.5

[Bug 1727608] [NEW] Run out of file descriptors with opened tabs > ~12, 15

2017-10-25 Thread dino99
Public bug reported:

This is not a recent issue: googling around
"ERROR:value_store_frontend.cc(58)" show that error have been met
several years ago on multiple distro, not only ubuntu.

This append with a gnome-shell & wayland session when chromium have at
least 12 opened tabs, and scrolling url with many images (like with
thumblr.com).

Journalctl is filled with errors like:
"chromium-browser.desktop[2255]:
[2255:4906:1026/040419.151932:ERROR:value_store_frontend.cc(58)] Error while
writing gjieilkfnnjoihjjonajndjldjoagffm.browser_action to" which means that
file descriptors limit has been reached.
With such a case, gnome-shell is freezing until the hdd activity slowdown to
normal.

Is there a way to set file descriptor limit on the user side ?

[Bug 1706247] Comment bridged from LTC Bugzilla

2017-10-25 Thread bugproxy
--- Comment From aneesh.ku...@in.ibm.com 2017-10-26 01:24 EDT---
We do support 16GB hugepage from hardware point of view. What we had missing
was the ability to allocate such large contiguous memory in the kernel. The
pseries platform solved this by taking help from hypervisor.
PAPR introduced a mechanism for hypervisor to mark 16G contiguous region
reserved and pass the details via device tree. On Powernv this is not available
and hence we are not able to make use of 16G hugepages.

I have added the ability to allocate 16G hugepages on powernv platform.
The relevant fixes can be found at

commit 4ae279c2c96ab38a78b954d218790a8f6db714e5
Author: Aneesh Kumar K.V
Date: Fri Jul 28 10:31:27 2017 +0530

powerpc/mm/hugetlb: Allow runtime allocation of 16G.

You may want that and other dependent kernel patches.

[Bug 1662860] Re: /sbin/ldconfig.real: /usr/lib/nvidia-375/libEGL.so.1 is not a symbolic link

2017-10-25 Thread Jackie LaRonde
Same problem here with Ubuntu Studio 17.04 and NVidia GTX 750 and NVidia
384.90 driver.

I also get errors on boot up that I must "CTL-D" to pass that might be
related as log mentions this driver in one of the last lines.

I attempted the "fix" above and get:

$  sudo mv /usr/lib/nvidia-375/libEGL.so.1
/usr/lib/nvidia-375/libEGL.so.1.org

mv: cannot stat '/usr/lib/nvidia-375/libEGL.so.1': No such file or

[Bug 1229488] Re: EFI install to removable media not supported

2017-10-25 Thread Shuhao
So I made an attempt today to install and was more or less successful.
The workarounds I had to do are detailed as follows:

1. Create a EFI (FAT32, 300MB) and root file system (ext4/btrfs, the rest of
the drive) manually on the removable media.
2. Create a back up of the host system's EFI partition, with just a simple copy.
3. Install the system with the own partition layout. Set use EFI on the
removable (although nothing will be done due to this bug and #1173457) and set
the rootfs mount point on the removable.
4. Finish installation. Do not restart.
5. Copy the EFI directory in /dev/sda1 to /dev/sdX1 (the EFI partition you
created). Possibly make another backup copy as well.
6. Make a directory on the removable's EFI partition called BOOT.
7. Copy over grubx64.efi and shimx64.efi from
/mnt/removable-efi-partition/EFI/ubuntu* to
/mnt/removable-efi-partition/EFI/BOOT, create the BOOT directory if not exists.
8. Rename shimx64.efi to BOOTX64.EFI if secure boot is enabled, otherwise I
think you can just rename grubx64.efi to BOOTX64.EFI, although I'm not sure as
I only tested with secure boot thus far.
9. Mount the root fs from the removable media, change /etc/fstab to disable the
swapfile (somehow prevented boot on my system if enabled).
10. Use blkid to find out the UUID of /dev/sdX1 (the EFI partition on the
removable).
11. In /etc/fstab again, the /boot/efi mount entry should have the UUID of the
one above (i believe it by default filled the uuid from whatever /dev/sda1 is).
12. Copy the original backed up EFI partition back to the EFI partition on the
internal hard drive.

One thing to note that may be confusing: ubuntu mounts the efi partition
in /boot/efi. The partition itself should have a folder called EFI
(/boot/efi/EFI), and the BOOT/ubuntu directories are contained under
that folder (/boot/efi/EFI/BOOT). Don't just copy BOOT/ubuntu directly
into the partition, the system won't boot. The some of the path
fragments are the same, which could make this confusing.

*don't take this path literally, you need to mount that partition
yourself.

it is strange though that I did not face this issue since I installed
mysql (a couple of months ago) and just observed this today.

The password validate plugin was just working fine until today. And
mysql dev site has the same policy setting options as I had in my.cnf.

for me this was because of the "validate_password_policy" statement in my.cnf.
I had to remove that line from my.cnf and start mysql.

And as I did not need to force any password policy for my sql users, I
just uninstalled the mysql password policy plugin.

[Bug 1725932] Re: gnome-shell freezes randomly

2017-10-25 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Ugg. Sorry about that. I don't fully understand the Ubuntu policy on
that myself, but it did change over night:

  https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apport/2.20.7-0ubuntu3.1

You might have some luck by downgrading your apport packages to the
previous version first:

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apport/2.20.7-0ubuntu3/+build/13569366

Again, sorry about that. I need to get in contact with the relevant
Canonical staff and ask what the rationale for periodically disabling
crash reports is...

[Bug 1727269] Re: Window buttons and window edges are not rendered/designed cleanly - Ubuntu 17.10 Gnome

2017-10-25 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I'm looking at both 16.04 and 17.10 on identical monitors and can't see
the problem you're talking about.

Can you take screenshots of the issue? Just press PrtScn and then look
in your Pictures...

[Bug 1721735] Re: UbuntuOne auth dialog is displayed when polkit auth dialog is dismissed

2017-10-25 Thread James Henstridge
I've got an (as yet unmerged) snapd branch to help with this:

https://github.com/snapcore/snapd/pull/4055

It got a review yesterday, so should go in the next snapd release.

This is basically doing (1), returning a Forbidden error when the user
dismisses the dialog.

"wayland" is just the bare protocol libraries, so not relevant here. The
package you want is one of:

  gnome-shell
  mutter
  gdm3

I see the "probably a fresh install" at bottom. Yep! I will update
immediately. Am getting off the Microsoft teet, and messing up
regularly. Just bear with me and maybe I'll will be able to contribute
to the Ubuntu Community in the future.

[Bug 1718825] Re: [Feature] Cristal Ridge: x86 Process Context IDentifiers (PCID) support for OSV

2017-10-25 Thread quanxian
The changes are too invasive (they will not backport cleanly), they are
not stable yet (there are still bugs being found in 4.14-rcX). The
performance implications are also not well-documented across the
platforms that we care about.

The opinion is that it is not practical or a good idea to pursue putting
this code back into old distributions, closing this.
