[Bug 1577168] Re: Browser hangs Ubuntu 16.04

2017-11-01 Thread irontechmonkey
Also occurring here in ubuntu 16.04 LTS with symptoms similar to
original report: Upon attempting to run "Browser" the computer freezes.
The mouse may move but there is no response to anything other than mouse
cursor movement and long hold power button to reboot. Since previously a
question was asked about graphics, here are some details:

Dell Inspiration 5566
Intel Core™ i3-7100U @2.40GHz × 4
Intel® HD Graphics 620 (Kabylake GT2)
Laptop has one physical drive.
Windows 7 is installed in an NTFS partition using the first half of the drive.
Ubuntu is installed on the remaining half of the drive with default
partitioning.

There have been no other apparent problems running this configuration
(in either Ubuntu or Windows).

[Bug 1531653] Re: Macbook Pro Retina 11, 1 SD Card Reader Doesn't Work

2017-11-01 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Randy Syring, we can see what can be done anyways without it. However,
please keep expectations reasonable as not testing the upstream kernel
limits the probability of getting this addressed as fast as possible.

With this in mind:
1) Do you have the 2013 or 2014 model as per
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201518 ?
2) To see if this is resolved in Ubuntu, could you please test the latest live
Ubuntu via http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ and advise to the
results?
3) Do you have a dual-boot of macOS and Ubuntu? If so, is the latest version of
macOS installed?

[Bug 1588637] Re: iwlwifi: Microcode SW error detected. Restarting 0x2000000

2017-11-01 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Tim Tierney, this report is closed, as it was resolved for the original
reporter by an update. If you are having a a WiFi problem, you likely
have a different root cause for a similar error message.

Hence, it will help immensely if you use the computer the problem is
reproducible with, and file a new report with Ubuntu by using the default
repository kernel (not mainline/upstream/3rd party) via a terminal:
ubuntu-bug linux

Please feel free to subscribe me to it.

[Bug 1531653] Re: Macbook Pro Retina 11, 1 SD Card Reader Doesn't Work

2017-11-01 Thread Randy Syring
Christopher M. Penalver,

Regarding the request in comment #7, I don't think I have the skill or
patience to go through all that work. This laptop is almost EOL for me
anyway. Sorry, if you are only holding this bug open for me to do that
work and report back, feel free to close it. I wish I could be more
help, but I just don't have the time to mess with this kind of stuff
like I used to.

Thanks for your help.

[Bug 1729337] Re: CIFS errors on 4.4.0-98, but not on 4.4.0-97 with same config

2017-11-01 Thread FedeX
I've found another interesting fact by searching the mount.cifs man
page, quote:

   sec=
   Security mode. Allowed values are:

   · none - attempt to connection as a null user (no name)

   · krb5 - Use Kerberos version 5 authentication

   · krb5i - Use Kerberos authentication and forcibly enable
packet signing

   · ntlm - Use NTLM password hashing

   · ntlmi - Use NTLM password hashing and force packet
signing

   · ntlmv2 - Use NTLMv2 password hashing

   · ntlmv2i - Use NTLMv2 password hashing and force packet
signing

   · ntlmssp - Use NTLMv2 password hashing encapsulated in Raw
NTLMSSP message

   · ntlmsspi - Use NTLMv2 password hashing encapsulated in
Raw NTLMSSP message, and force packet signing

The default in mainline kernel versions prior to v3.8 was
sec=ntlm. In v3.8, the default was changed to sec=ntlmssp.

If the server requires signing during protocol negotiation,
then it may be enabled automatically. Packet signing may also be enabled
automatically if it's enabled in /proc/fs/cifs/SecurityFlags.

With this in mind, if I go ahead and change the mount to use vers=3.0 again and
add option sec=ntlmsspi it works like a charm, see below example:

//x.y.z.w/share /mnt/share cifs
vers=3.0,iocharset=utf8,noperm,rw,uid=root,file_mode=0660,dir_mode=0770,credentials=/credentials.file,sec=ntlmsspi
0 0

Above fix works on both Xenial (using 4.4.0-98-generic) and Trusty
(using 3.13.0-135-generic)

[Bug 1665850] Re: Screen corruption after unblank with HWE stack

2017-11-01 Thread Andrei Borzenkov
Update: recently one of programs I use started to complain that screen
was not DRI3 capable. I am using Intel driver which apparently defaults
to DRI2. I forced it to DRI3 using

Option "DRI" "3"

After that I immediately got tearing during video and the same strange
corruption of screen (fast blinking). As modesetting driver defaults to
DRI3 it appears the issue is not Intel vs. modeseting but rather DRI2
vs. DRI3.

Googling around suggests that this may be this upstream bug:

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=97957

If there is Ubuntu package for 16.04 that includes above commit I would
be more than happy to test it.

[Bug 1729441] Re: changing display mode after login terminates session

2017-11-01 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Sounds like you might have multiple bugs.

(1) Failure to remember the correct display configuration when logging
in is bug 1726538.

(2) If your session is getting terminated then something is crashing.
Please forgive the standard response...

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a ".crash" file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

Now open your file manager, navigate to your /var/crash directory and open the
crash report you wish to submit.
If this fails you will have to open a terminal and file your report with
'ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash' where _my_crash_report.crash is
the crash you would like to report. If you get an error that you aren't allowed
to access this report you will have to file it with 'sudo ubuntu-bug
/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash'.

[Bug 1623530] Re: Apport should be disabled by default

2017-11-01 Thread Luis Alvarado
Just updating that in 17.04 and 17.10 it still shows, some times
multiple times for the same issue. The opt-in option is better suited
for end users and if a developer wants it enabled they can simply edit
the apport file. But again, a year later and 2 versions later, a simple
opt-in approach (that would actually help so many users I have talk to)
would be the way to go. Anything else like telling the user to install
something or thinking for the developer first (and forgetting the whole
idea is to make a user friendly desktop system) is so wrong.

[Bug 1728977] Re: back to the choice of apps in alt+tab+shift

2017-11-01 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Seems to work for me:
Alt+Shift+Tab to switch to the previous app.
Alt+Shift+` to switch to the previous window.

Gnome Shell is different to Unity in that you need to use ` instead of
Tab to switch windows of an app. But in both cases using Shift to switch
to the previous one seems to work fine...

What keyboard layout are you using? And what key do you have above the
Tab key?

[Bug 1728585] Re: no screen, no keyboard, no mouse, high cpu usage

2017-11-01 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. A freeze or black screen often means something has
crashed. Please follow these instructions to have apport report a new
bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

[Bug 1727356] Re: Wayland does not start up on "Integrated Graphics Chipset: Intel(R) G33": Shader compilation failed

2017-11-01 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I fully agree this bug is valid and needs to be fixed. I only disagree
with Sebastian's selection of High importance in the bigger picture.

"cannot open display" either means it's an X app and XOpenDisplay failed
(Xwayland isn't running because mutter failed to start). Or it means
it's a native Wayland client and it can't start because mutter failed to
start. Either way, "cannot open display" is an expected error that's a
side-effect of this bug (mutter failed to start). But it's not the cause
of this bug and not relevant.

I have some older hardware laying around that might experience this or
similar issues. So I'll try to get to testing it out before we're too
far into the new year.

[Bug 1729181] Re: directory and file icons are same in "Files" app

2017-11-01 Thread Kunal Shah
Hi,

How do I find this information? I know how to check themes in 16.04 but
in 17.10 I am not able to locate that setting so not able to tell you
exactly. If it helps, I am using outbox theme that comes with default
installation of Ubuntu 17.10 and with wayland display server not xOrg.

Thanks
Kunal Shah

[Bug 1725676] Re: Keyboard language unavailable on the login screen

2017-11-01 Thread Daniel van Vugt
While editing /etc/default/keyboard may work, we really need to ensure a
GUI solution exists for normal Ubuntu users before calling this fixed.

If the below steps don't work then we need to find out why and get it
fixed:

1. On 17.04 and earlier: System Settings > Language Support
2. On 17.10 and later: Settings > Region & Language > Manage Installed Languages
3. Configure your preferred language
4. Click "Apply System-Wide (Use the same language choices for startup and the
login screen.)"

Or we need to find some other GUI-based solution. For human beings :)

[Bug 1724977] Re: two mouse cursors visible at the same time on rotated screen

2017-11-01 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I doubt this bug is driver-specific. A rotated screen might get
"software" (GL) cursor rendering by default in Wayland sessions (I am
guessing since we did the same in Mir). And the hardware cursor is used
on non-rotated screens. The two should co-exist and only one display at
a time, so that's no excuse, just a possible explanation.

One reason why the problem might appear to go away with the proprietary
Nvidia driver is because that uses Xorg by default. So it avoids all
such issues that are peculiar to the Wayland/eglnative case.

[Bug 1706247] Re: It should not be possible to turn on 16g huge pages on Ubuntu 16.04.2 PowerNV

2017-11-01 Thread Joseph Salisbury
I built an Artful test kernel(17.10) with the following three commits:

4ae279c2 powerpc/mm/hugetlb: Allow runtime allocation of 16G.
79cc38de powerpc/mm/hugetlb: Add support for reserving gigantic huge pages via
kernel command line
e24a1307 mm/hugetlb: Allow arch to override and call the weak function

Commits e1073d1e7 and 40692eb5 were not needed since there are already
in Artful/4.13.

The test kernel can be downloaded from:

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~jsalisbury/lp1706247/artful

Can you test this kernel and see if it resolves this bug?

I will work on building Zesty and Xenial test kernels next. They
required those two extra commits and they need some back porting.

[Bug 1174162] Re: chrome-browser makes gnome-keyring-daemon use 100% cpu

2017-11-01 Thread pEEf
For the last few YEARS, I fix this by adding "--password-store=basic" to
the command line. It's "insecure credential storage", but it greatly
speeds up Chrome password login and no high CPU utilization.

Simply edit /usr/share/applications/google-chrome.desktop, and add
--password-store=basic to the 3 Exec= lines in that file.

[Bug 1685528] Re: ZFS initramfs mounts dataset explicitly set not to be mounted, causing boot process to fail

2017-11-01 Thread Richard Laager
samvde, can you provide your `zfs list` output? The script seems
designed to only import filesystems *below* the filesystem that is the
root filesystem. In the typical case, the root filesystem is something
like rpool/ROOT/ubuntu. There typically shouldn't be children of
rpool/ROOT/ubuntu.

[Bug 1705369] Re: Ubuntu 17.10 boots to black screen when using Nvidia drivers (on a desktop with an Intel GPU)

2017-11-01 Thread Bernadette Addison
K...so we’re getting closer! After a fresh install yet again, and following
very closely the steps outlined in post #66, I am now at the lighten login
screen. It will NOT let me login, it’s a constant login loop every time I put
in my password. But at least I’m past boot loop. I attempted to fix the login
loop by using a hack:
Carl+Alt+F1
mv.Xauthority .Xauthority.bak
Then back to the GUI. Unfortunately this did not work. So I am currently just
sitting at the login screen, unable then loginlol

This is a bit comical that we need to jump thru these hoops for drivers
to work :-(

[Bug 1581160] Re: Switch to Noto Sans as default font for Japanese and/or Korean?

2017-11-01 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Let's get started with this.

I have uploaded some language-selector changes to bionic. They include:

* The Japanese config file proposed by Mitsuya Shibata in comment #11.

* Adding of Korean entries to
  /etc/fonts/conf.avail/64-language-selector-prefer.conf

To make it easier to test on Ubuntu 17.10, I also uploaded the new
language-selector version to the artful pocket of this PPA:

https://launchpad.net/~gunnarhj/+archive/ubuntu/noto-test

However, Launchpad seems to be unusually busy for some reason, so it
will probably take several hours for both uploads before they are
available...

Later on, if we decide to switch to Noto, changes need to be done to
several seed branches, so the installer does not install Takao/Nanum
fonts. At this time, to test the changes, you need to remove Takao/Nanum
packages manually:

sudo apt purge fonts-takao-*

sudo apt purge fonts-nanum*

Also, the fonts-noto-cjk package, which is installed by default for all
users, only includes the font weights "Regular" and "Bold". To get
access to the other weights, you need to do:

sudo apt install fonts-noto-cjk-extra

I ask our Japanese and Korean users to please test this and provide
feedback.

[Bug 1522675] Re: Warning messages about unsandboxed downloads

2017-11-01 Thread Julian Andres Klode
I'd say it's probably the synaptic one for Martin. We should change its
directory to be _apt owned too, though it's not really clear to me which
directories that are.

This should all be fixed in a hopefully near future with apt 1.6 or 1.7
opening these files as root and passing them down to the unprivileged
processes via a socket. That's not yet implemented, though I do have
mvo's branch from 2013 or so as a base.

[Bug 1605887] Re: Can't change Firefox home page in Ubuntu MATE

2017-11-01 Thread Luke Horwell
- Bugs against "ubuntu-mate" may be invalidated by the bug supervisor when they
can be filed towards a specific package. (See after comment #11 for when that
happened)
- Yakkety is EOL (end of life) and won't be possible to update that release
anymore.

Please see bug 1721965 for Artful (17.10), as a fix is committed but not
yet released.

[Bug 1724105] Re: Privacy : Deactivating screen lock doesn't work

2017-11-01 Thread 1LinuxGuy
I don't think it's an upstream bug at all, as I didn't have that problem
on Fedora 27 and Manjaro, both on Gnome 3.26.

And I had the same problem with Ubuntu Gnome 17.04

Please don't put the blame on upstream before investigating.

[Bug 1729461] [NEW] Clicking notification raises a slew of unrelated windows

2017-11-01 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Public bug reported:

Running GNOME Shell. When (for example) I click on a Signal
notification, Shell will raise the Signal window, and then raises my
password manager window, and two different(!) Telegram windows over the
top.

This is not the ideal behaviour :).

This is not limited to Signal; Geary notifications suffer the same
behaviour.

[Bug 1729441] Re: changing display mode after login terminates session

2017-11-01 Thread Penna Panna
** Description changed:

When I login, I type the password on the laptop screen. (Maybe it's
important.) After a while, while I'm waiting to get logged in, Ubuntu
changes the display mode. Both monitor goes black, laptop screen becomes
the secondary and my external monitor becomes the primary display.
Because of Ubuntu is unable to remember to the previously set display
mode, I usually change it a bit after I have logged in. However, if I
(would like to) do this too quickly, say... less than 4-5 seconds after
I can see my desktop, my session gets terminated and I'm returned to the
- login screen. You can repeat it indefinitely, it always worked (?) for
- me.
+ login screen. You can repeat it indefinitely, it always worked for me.

I thought it's because of one of my extensions but I could reproduce it after
I have disabled them.
I haven't found any useful log entries.
+
+
+ UPDATE 1:
+ While I was writing this, I thought it has something to do with theme loading
or something like this, so I continued to test with startup applications.
+ I just rarely managed to reproduce this bug when I didn't execute the
following script (as a file) at login:
+ ```
+ #!/bin/bash
+ sleep 1s; firefox &
+ sleep 1s; thunderbird &
+ ```
+
+ I also noticed that after I have some faulty logins and then I login
+ without changing display mode, I >sometimes< have no desktop, no startup
+ applications and when I click power off/logout buttons nothing happens,
+ but that's sure I will being logged out randomly in the near future -
+ even if I don't touch my computer (I'm talking about minutes).
+
+ Plus, I can see the desktop and the top bar (so it's the primary screen)
+ with two wide black bars on the two sides of my laptop monitor for a
+ moment before I get logged out. (However, I don't see any resolution
+ changes so I guess it's not 640x480, or 800x600, etc.)
