[Bug 550245] Re: convert screen init.d script to upstart

2017-11-02 Thread Axel Beckert
Upstart is no more. Hence separating from the other bug reports (which
were about error messages which should be fixed by the conversion and
may still be there) and closing as invalid.

** This bug is no longer a duplicate of bug 574773

[Bug 1652282] Re: Xwayland not using XAUTHORITY, prevents root applications from connecting

2017-11-02 Thread sudodus
@Dave Stroud,

If you spend a few minutes to create/install/modify some file(s), for
example 'gks' according to my previous comment, you need not type 'xhost
si:localuser:root' every time you boot up.

1. Some of us think that this is an unnecessary complication or worse,

2. Some of us think that it is an important step to increase the
security,

to prevent GUI programs to run with elevated permissions. The developers
of Wayland belong to the second group ;-)

-o-

I think that the main linux distros will gradually adjust to the opinion
of their users ...

[Bug 1707352] Re: the change from libsane to libsane1 broke many (all?) 3rd party plug-ins for sane

2017-11-02 Thread Warren
@staedtler-przyborski -- Thanks!! It worked for my V500. Now BOTH the
WF-3540 scanner and V500 are working as well as ever. scanimage -L finds
them both; and iscan, simplescan, and xsane run them.

Good work!

I'm guessing there's a lot of old driver install debs out in the world
that are putting their stuff into /usr/lib/sane instead of into
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/sane which seems to be the current "proper"
place. Since those installers are not likely to be rebuilt, the next
best solution would be for sane to look in /user/lib/sane if it fails to
find what it's looking for in /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/sane.

4 GBs Ram is quite small in today’s standard.

I think higher swappiness value is your only choice other than actually
adding ram to your laptop.

[Bug 1729777] [NEW] [snap] Cannot open downloaded files

2017-11-02 Thread Olivier Tilloy
Public bug reported:

After downloading a file with the chromium snap (62.0.3202.75), if I
open the Downloads page and click either on the filename or on the "Show
in folder" link, nothing happens. I'm seeing the following message in
the console:

Error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.AccessDenied: Supplied URL scheme "" is not
allowed
Error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name
com.canonical.SafeLauncher was not provided by any .service files

This is due to snapd's re-implementation of xdg-open
(https://github.com/snapcore/snapd/blob/master/userd/launcher.go#L73).

[Bug 1729558] Re: [regression] In Java apps like Netbeans, dark menu bars don't look good for disabled elements

2017-11-02 Thread md_5
If you were testing your own install the font rendering is messed because of
this bug in freetype https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1722508
Downgrading to the Zesty version of freetype (as in my screenshots) fixes that
issue.

[Bug 1729558] Re: [regression] In Java apps like Netbeans, dark menu bars don't look good for disabled elements

2017-11-02 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I think it's more the Swing/other toolkit's unique way of rendering
things than GTK. Testing a native GTK-2 app (geeqie) doesn't seem to
exhibit the problem.

Yes I agree with your terminology. Worth noting though even the font
rendering style looks messed up in Netbeans. From what I recall in years
gone by that's a Java-specific issue.

[Bug 1729558] Re: [regression] In Java apps like Netbeans, dark menu bars don't look good for disabled elements

2017-11-02 Thread md_5
Java isn’t hardcoding them, it’s pulling them from GTK. There is the
possibility that it’s pulling the wrong type of element colour (sorry
not sure about terminology).

I guess the test is to find a GTK 2 app with disabled menu elements that
previously had a white menu which is now black wih this patch.

I did make a test Java Swing app and the disabled elements looked bad,
so it’s not constrained to Netbeans at least.

[Bug 1672297] Re: gnome-shell uses lots of memory, and grows over time

2017-11-02 Thread Daniel van Vugt
It's often easier to replace the binary itself with a debug script. For
example:

  mv /usr/bin/gnome-shell /usr/bin/gnome-shell.bin

Now create a new 'gnome-shell' file that's a script which launches
gnome-shell.bin under a profiler/debugger, like:

  #!/bin/sh
  exec MYPROFILER $0.bin $*

and remember to:

  chmod 755 /usr/bin/gnome-shell

[Bug 1672297] Re: gnome-shell uses lots of memory, and grows over time

2017-11-02 Thread Paul
Tried to get a Massif profile, starting a new gnome-shell with
--replace, but it fails before it can replace the running process due to
bug #1700465:

$ valgrind --tool=massif --num-callers=32 --log-file=/tmp/gnome-
shell.valgrind.log gnome-shell --replace

(gnome-shell:30065): mutter-WARNING **: Can't initialize KMS backend:
Could not get session ID: No such file or directory

If we can't replace it, it should be possible to get the display manager to
launch gnome-shell in valgrind at login. The order of execution seems to be:
gdm3 -> gdm-session-worker -> gdm-wayland-session -> gnome-session-binary ->
gnome-shell. I hit a dead end when trying to find config files though.

I don't think that can be "attached" though. Possibly no profiler can
be. You'd need to figure out how to launch the gnome-shell process
manually too.

[Bug 1617617] Re: Firewall configuration can be modified by any logged in user

2017-11-02 Thread Seth Arnold
Thanks Lucas, I made some small fixes to the changelog for the -security
pocket and to pick a version number that would more accurately reflect
the changes (there's more examples at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SecurityTeam/UpdatePreparation#Update_the_packaging
).

The update should be on the mirrors soon.

Thanks

[Bug 1672297] Re: gnome-shell uses lots of memory, and grows over time

2017-11-02 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Confirmed. Seems I can make gnome-shell grow by about 1MB per second if
I move the mouse over the dock continuously, or scrub across the panel
menus continuously. That might not be the only problem but the rate of
growth is quite significant.

Without stack traces from a memory profiler, or confirmation that your
problem is caused by a specific extension or feature, we unfortunately
can't do anything and need to group this bug with similar bug reports,
under bug 1672297.

P.S. The CPU issue should be discussed separately, probably in bug
1696305 or bug 1698792.

Ironically, I'm the one who originally filed that bug ... but the

17.10.

What's your preferred profiler for this kind of bug, and can it be
attached to a running process?

[Bug 1722778] Re: System frequently becomes completely unresponsive due to thrashing

2017-11-02 Thread jeremy-list
Once it has happened there is no way to check RAM usage because
keyboard, mouse, and network devices all become completely unresponsive.
I have 3.8 GiB of RAM installed. On the occasions when I have checked
RAM usage shortly before it happened: total RAM usage was 3.8GiB. I have
19.1GiB of swap space enabled, but this problem will happen when swap
usage is still around 10MiB.

[Bug 1624317] Re: systemd-resolved breaks VPN with split-horizon DNS

2017-11-02 Thread Thomas
The issue I had either was this bug or something else, but somehow it's
apparently working in 17.10. Basically, the domain(s) of the corporate
vpn that I connect to resolve over the VPN again, while everything else
resolves as usual. This worked fine in 16.10, was entirely broken in
17.04 and is back to working in 17.10.
