[Bug 1716028] Re: qemu 2.10 locks images with no feature flag

2017-11-27 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Also on the qemu side this is "works as intended" and workarounds are
documented in this bug.
So we should set that bug status as well - looking back given it was mostly a
discussion I guess "opinion" is the best close status in this case.

Danni, this is useful information and gives the best hope of being able
to debug the problem. Was your original resolv.conf a symlink or a real
file? Can you attach it to this bug report?

Can you also paste the output of 'dpkg -S /etc/NetworkManager' on your

[Bug 1734817] [NEW] keyboard: alt-F doesn't open File menu

2017-11-27 Thread John Pye
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu 17.10, something seems to have gone wrong with the keyboard
bindings for the application menus (File, Edit, View, Insert, etc).
Specifically, the first menu item cannot be opened using its assigned
shortcut alt+key combination.

In LibreOffice 5.4.1.2, I can use alt-E, alt-V, alt-H, alt-A (for
tAble). All of them work EXCEPT alt-F, which is the first one in the
list.

In Gedit 3.22.1 and Evince 3.26.0, it is the same. I can't use alt-F,
but I can use all the others.

Interestingly, in Pluma 1.18.2, everything is fine. Also, in Firefox
57.0 everything is fine. Also in Synaptic 0.84.2, which doesn't
integrate correctly with Unity, alt-F and the others work fine.

It seems that the 'modern' GNOME 3 applications are all failing, and
then also LibreOffice as well, which maybe is using GTK3 just like
GNOME3. Otherwise, I don't know.

I think this bug is not the same as bug #790687. That bug is just about
the case where the desktop is focussed, not other applications in
general.

[Bug 1734147] Re: Ubuntu 17.10 corrupting BIOS - many LENOVO laptops models

2017-11-27 Thread Alexis Rico
This is unacceptable, right now my Lenovo G50-80 is a brick.

USB Boot does not work.
DVD Boot does not work.
BIOS Boot menu doesn't autodetect changes on the hard drive EFI paths.

And during an update grub stopped working, it reported a syscall error
of I/O and on reboot I couldn't start the computer anymore. I would
normally boot a live cd and boot-repair but guess what UEFI USB Boot
does not work and Legacy capabilities won't work either.

And reprogramming the BIOS chip is not a viable solution by the way...

This isn't really what they're getting at, or maybe I am only speaking
for myself. That hardware database isn't a collection of hardware
statistics of Ubuntu users which is useful for developers making design
choices.

I didn't suggest resurrecting the old one. I suggested how to go about
building a new one.

[Bug 1731522] Re: systemd-resolved sends SERVFAIL to host/nslookup for pod51041.outlook.com

2017-11-27 Thread Shuhao
The bug report here is likely inaccurate. I don't exactly know where the
problem is.

I did some tcpdumps for port 53 traffic. I see that if I did a ping, it
requests for the A records of the domain name and indeed the IP
addresses are getting returned. However, weirdly, ping then requests for
the A records of pod51041.outlook.com.lan. .lan is the search domain on
my network as specified with /etc/resolv.conf automatically.

Furthermore, if I disable ipv6, thunderbird and firefox can access the
domain, but ping still cannot.

So I don't think this bug report should be filed against systemd, but I
don't really know where the problem lies.

** Description changed:

Trying to resolve pod51041.outlook.com's domain name seems to fail for
  applications:

- $ nslookup
- > host pod51041.outlook.com
- Server: 127.0.0.53
- Address: 127.0.0.53#53
-
- ** server can't find host: SERVFAIL

- $ ping pod51041.outlook.com
+ $ ping pod51041.outlook.com
ping: pod51041.outlook.com: Temporary failure in name resolution
-

  (Also can't access via thunderbird).

However, it seems to work directly via systemd-resolve:

[Bug 1734808] [NEW] TortoiseHg 3.7.3 requires newer Mercurial package (3.8.n or higher)

2017-11-27 Thread Ben Fritz
Public bug reported:

I am running on Xenial, and I am trying to use the TortoiseHg
application installed via Synaptic. It seems impossible to install
TortoiseHg in a working state from the package manager.

TortoiseHg installs fine from the "universe" repository, but will not
launch, giving error message:

This version of TortoiseHg requires Mercurial version 3.8.n to 3.9.n, but
found 3.7.3

Version 3.7.3 is the latest Mercurial version available in the "universe"
repository. The PPA for Mercurial has version 4.4.1, so that probably will not
work either. Looking at apt-cache output, it looks like older versions of
TortoiseHg are not available either.

[Bug 1700827] Re: [MIR] pcp package

2017-11-27 Thread Matthias Klose
things which should be addressed:

 - Debian #805955, this is not fixed.
You should not call dh_* in the binary-arch target without -a,
working on the Arch: all packages as well. That should be done
in the binary-indep target with dh_* -i calls.

 - python-six, python-json-pointer as build dependencies: Why no
python3 equivalents? Looks like Python2 is used for the build
by default, which is not wanted anymore for main. I'd suggest
to replace those by their Python3 equivalents unconditionally.

 - the python3/python dependencies are wrong.
PCP_PYTHON_PROG=python3 can be changed in the config file,
invalidating the package dependencies. I think the python2
alternatives should be dropped and PCP_PYTHON_PROG shouldn't
   be a config option.
   pcp Depends: python3-pcp | python-pcp.

   pcp-export-pcp2influxdb: Depends on python-requests unconditionally,
   no python3-requests.

I assume the packages are built to be "usable" with both Python2/Python3
but breaking package dependencies on the way. There is a reason that
Debian and Ubuntu have separate Python2/Python3 stacks. That should
   be fixed.

 - pcp: gawk (build) dependency: looks like this one isn't needed (no gawk
specifics), and awk is in essential.

 - lintian still reports over 200 warnings/errors, making it
difficult to find relevant warnings. You can easily fix
   some of those.
   + Priority extra -> optional
+ unusual-interpreter: Why have /usr/bin/venv pmpython and not
/usr/bin/pmpython? Everything else seems to be hardcoded for
/usr/bin in the config file anyway?
+ pcp-testsuite: Please either fix (or override) the warnings
 for script-not-executable and unsual-interpreter.
+ fixing the above makes the remaining lintian warnings more
visible. The manpage warnings might be minor (?), but
 what about the init.d-script-does-not-source-init-functions
 warnings?

so please fix at least the binary-indep/binary-arch targets, and the
python/python3 dependency mess.

[Bug 1734806] [NEW] Reset Ubuntu to Factory Defaults

2017-11-27 Thread Jeb E.
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu users can really benefit from an easy GUI app built-into Ubuntu

[Bug 1734805] [NEW] Asus ROG GL553VE Shutdown/Restart freeze in kernel 4.14

2017-11-27 Thread Md Kowsar Hossain
Public bug reported:

I'm usung Asus ROG GL553VE. If I use an updated kernel I can't
shutdown/restart, it just freezes.

First I updated my linux kernel into v4.10 and experienced the issue.
Then again I updated my kernel into v4.14 and this issue still exists.
However If I go back to kernel v4.4 this issue seems to be resolved. So
seems like it's a kernel issue(v4.14).

[Bug 1734802] [NEW] Can't type the numbers 1-5 into the search bar when trying to filter emails.

2017-11-27 Thread Michael Neuling
Public bug reported:

I can't type the numbers 1-5 into the search bar when trying to filter
emails.

Fix is upstream in evolution in this commit

commit 0b6a4a707279d63c389bff691da4519d51f468a6
Author: Milan Crha
Date: Wed Oct 4 18:49:06 2017 +0200

Label shortcuts prevent typing numbers

Since change for bug 787002 typing numbers into for example search
entry was not possible, due to the shortcuts for labels "consuming"
the key presses. The fix is to allow labels only if the message
list is focused, when also the context menu contains the Labels.

This had been reported downstream:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1498484

[Bug 1733991] Re: ctrl + super + w is too eager to destroy windows

2017-11-27 Thread Seth Arnold
Khurshid, to be clear, the CTRL and the W were the intentional keys, the
Windows (aka Super) key was the complete accident that turned this into
a real annoyance. Instead of one word being deleted, entire windows are
removed. (The irony of course is thanks to mosh+tmux, the word was still
there once I reconnected to that computer.)

If you hold down the Windows (Super) key in Unity, you'll see a handy
menu of shortcut keys, where Super + W is used in four different items.
If suddenly only one of them is supposed to work, it'd be nice to amend
the menu of shortcut keys, though that'd probably be best served by a
different bug.

Thanks

commit f7c688b8ef88a7390f5b09719a2b3e80368438c0

Refined fix for validating image on rebuild

This aims to fix the issue described in bug 1664931 where a rebuild
fails to validate the existing host with the scheduler when a new
image is provided. The previous attempt to do this could cause rebuilds
to fail unnecessarily because we ran _all_ of the filters during a
rebuild, which could cause usage/resource filters to prevent an otherwise
valid rebuild from succeeding.

This aims to classify filters as useful for rebuild or not, and only apply
the former during a rebuild scheduler check. We do this by using an internal
scheduler hint, indicating our intent. This should (a) filter out
all hosts other than the one we're running on and (b) be detectable by
the filtering infrastructure as an internally-generated scheduling request
in order to trigger the correct filtering behavior.

2017-11-27 Thread Rolf Leggewie
You reported this against 12.04. In 2013 you reported this as fixed in
Trusty. This is logically and per Ubuntu policy only possible if the
problem is "Fix Released". So, yes, even at the time of the comment it
"was".

[Bug 1721428] Re: Artful (17.10) Session logout after screen turned off

2017-11-27 Thread Matthew Geier
I disabled all gnome-shell extensions and my session gets killed if I turn my
screens off.
I have to turn them off, as I disabled the screen savem do to being logged out
when the screen blanked.

The only workaround is to disable the screen saver, which means when I leave my
desk, my session is open for any one to fiddle with.
If I lock the screen, the screen saver re-activates turns off the screen and my
session gets killed.

This not very convenient at all.

[Bug 1729668] Re: Vulnerability in tinysvcmdns

2017-11-27 Thread Seth Arnold
Thanks for investigating and reporting upstream, Chris. It does indeed
look like our packages should just be plain rebuilds, so I'll mark this
'Won't Fix'. (None of the descriptions feel quite right, but I do think
it's fair to say that probably no one's going to bundle fixes for
something that we don't build.)

[Bug 1734793] [NEW] ubuntu 16 installer crashed

2017-11-27 Thread Gary Hunt
Public bug reported:

Had Ubuntu 8.04 on hp elitebook 8440p , but only for a few days. Wanted to
remove it and install the 16.04.3 because wifi did not work in the 8.04. The
installer could not remove 8.04, so I used the manual partition tool they
offered to give the newer version the maximum room, since 8.04 was going to
have to stay and it was useless.
At least the wifi is working with the live 16 disc.

But it does in the only meaningful way it will be addressed. Lets
re-examine the original bug:

>> Cannot browse hardware database. Only very generic data without any
details is available on http://hwdb.ubuntu.com/ .

This is resolved, maybe not satisfactorily, but resolved in that
hwdb.ubuntu.com was sunset several years ago, it is not coming back.

Ubuntu bugs no longer refer to hardware database IDs as there is no
longer ANY method in Ubuntu so submit them, no endpoint on LP to
receive them, and no database front end to publicly display them. The
data submitted way back then remains tied to the user's LP account and
that is as far as that data will go.

If you would like to recover that data somehow, then a more
appropriate venue would be file a NEW, and more apropos Launchpad bug
that covers the need to recover that old hwdb data via some sort of
API mechanism.

These will not be modified again, because that project is dead.

There IS a hardware database Canonical maintains, and it has been
linked several times in the bug comments. That database is found at:

https://certification.ubuntu.com

And maintains a list of all the Officially Supported hardware from IoT
to Desktops/laptops to SoCs and Servers. There is also a catalog
available that shows you every single device that appears in every
system certified.

At this point, trying to resurrect a badly designed 11 year old
database of hardware no one owns or can purchase any longer is not the
right way to get this done. I would suggest going to the community
and getting some Ubuntu members together who are willing to develop,
build and host a new database with a better, cleaner design, using
better, more modern tools and encourage people to participate by
submitting data.

[Bug 30910] Re: Hardware Database not browseable

2017-11-27 Thread Kip Warner
I agree with the concerns of some of those above. If the hardware
database is no longer maintained, closing the bug as a wishlist is less
than ideal because it doesn't actually address the OP's original
concern.

It would be better if there was a hardware database Canonical
maintained. This can't be rocket science to build:

* Ubiquity installer makes some queries to the system with the user's
permission.
* Installer makes some JSON POST requests to remote server.
* Remote server stores anonymous hardware description in a MySQL or PostgreSQL
database.
* Database has a web based front end that shows some pies, tables, a field for
queries, etc.

This can probably be put together in a few days.

In order to avoid them I've prepared a pull request for upstream

[Bug 1734791] [NEW] gnome-keyring doesn't start gnome-keyring-ssh services

2017-11-27 Thread Tessa
Public bug reported:

Looking at the gnome-keyring packages in 17.10, I see the following
files, which should be auto-starting the gnome-keyring ssh agent
service:

/usr/lib/systemd/user/gnome-keyring-ssh.service
/usr/lib/systemd/user/graphical-session-pre.target.wants/gnome-keyring-ssh.service

As well, I seem to have a file in ~/.config/autostart/gnome-keyring-
ssh.desktop which should also start gnome-keyring-daemon with the
--components=ssh option.

However, in my actual GNOME session on Wayland, gnome-keyring-daemon is
running with the following options:

"/usr/bin/gnome-keyring-daemon --daemonize --login"

and there are no SSH-AGENT related env vars set, and common ssh commands
like ssh-add do not work.

[Bug 1638695] Re: Python 2.7.12 performance regression

2017-11-27 Thread Tyler Hicks
I don't feel like the change from fstack-protector-strong
to fstack-protector should be made. The performance testing results in
the spreadsheet don't suggest that the change positively impacts
performance in a meaningful way. fstack-protector-strong slightly
outperforms fstack-protector in some situations and slightly under
performs in others, suggesting that the difference is within the noise
threshold. I'd strongly prefer that we continue to use
fstack-protector-strong.

[Bug 30910] Re: Hardware Database not browseable

2017-11-27 Thread Chris Wayne
This isn't a case of folks 'being desperate to close this bug for good',
this is a case of 'this project is no longer viable or supported', and
therefore it is correct to mark this bug invalid. Yes checkbox still
exists, but we don't use hwdb, nor do we plan to resurrect it. For
checking on hardware marked as working with Ubuntu, the canonical place
to check is certification.ubuntu.com as Jeff pointed out in comment #47.
We will be leaving this bug as invalid.

[Bug 1727237] Re: systemd-resolved is not finding a domain

My understanding is that systemd-resolved as shipped in Ubuntu is meant
to not have DNS caching enabled at all.

  https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel/2016-June/039375.html

Looking at the default resolved.conf and the resolved.conf(5) manpage,
it appears we do have DNS caching enabled.

Dimitri, is this an oversight, or was there some further discussion with
the Security Team that resulted in caching being enabled?

[Bug 1734786] [NEW] session.use_trans_sid value parsed incorrectly

2017-11-27 Thread Vasya Pupkin
Public bug reported:

If I put "session.use_trans_sid = Off" in php.ini, the actual value of
session.use_trans_sid becomes empty, which breaks functionality. For
example, you can't put anything into your cart in Opencart CMS. Issue
can be reproduced with console php:

$ cat .user.ini
session.use_trans_sid = Off
$ php -c .user.ini -r 'echo "session.use_trans_sid =
\"".ini_get("session.use_trans_sid")."\"\n";'
session.use_trans_sid = ""

When "0" is used instead of "Off", everything works properly:

$ cat .user.ini
session.use_trans_sid = 0
$ php -c .user.ini -r 'echo "session.use_trans_sid =
\"".ini_get("session.use_trans_sid")."\"\n";'
session.use_trans_sid = "0"

[Bug 1734069] Re: idk

2017-11-27 Thread Emily Ratliff
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description
didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read 'How
to report bugs effectively'
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.
We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures. At a minimum, we need: 1.
the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem, 2. the behavior you expected, and 3. the behavior you actually
encountered (in as much detail as possible). Thanks!
