[Bug 1208993] Re: Ubuntu slows down and hangs while copying file from/to USB

2017-11-30 Thread Nick Smolinske
False alarm! The problem just happened again. Froze while downloading
the google chrome installer.

It does seem like the vm.dirty modifications definitely helped. But it
could have been coincidence. At least it didn't freeze during the
updater and ruin my filesystem this time.

[Bug 1208993] Re: Ubuntu slows down and hangs while copying file from/to USB

2017-11-30 Thread Nick Smolinske
Same issue here on a new 16.04 install on a new HP laptop. SSD. It was
crashing randomly during the install, then when I got it installed it
crashed every time I tried to run the updater.

Setting the vm.dirty_ratio and vm.dirty_background_ratio to 10 and 5
worked for me as well so far.

I did notice one interesting thing, which I feel might help diagnose
what's going on behind the scenes. When I was having the problem, the
CPU temp would get pretty high (up to 70 C) and the fan on the laptop
was running very loudly. These symptoms happened every time. The mouse
became slower, and slower, and unresponsive. Ctrl-Alt-F1 and other
keyboard shortcuts were unresponsive as well.

After changing those vm values, I was able to go through the updater
with no issue. And my CPU temp was about 10 C lower, hovering around 60
during the updater. The cooling fan did not go on high either. So
somehow the higher vm.dirty values are creating a situation where the
CPU is working much harder than it needs to for the job it's trying to
do.

I don't know nearly enough about the inner workings of linux to know
what this means, but my instincts tell me it might be an important clue
for anyone trying to fix this bug. Hopefully it helps.

The new dev (from /deb/bcache0) only has a by-uuid devlink as the UEVENT
that generates the CACHED_UUID devlink is not recorded/discovered
after the original binding of the cache device and backing store. This
forces udev to remove the link.

I hacked in a change which allows the old link to stay if the old_name, or
old_path match; this
keeps the symlinks around.

This is required (or the kernel fix to emit the CACHED_UUID on cold plug);
but not sufficient.
What else is needed is a change to the bcache rules file such that when a
bcacheN device is
replugged, it will query the backing device's superblock to find out the
dev.uuid, and import that
value as CACHED_UUID so that the dname rule can match the path
/dev/bcache/by-uuid/ and dname
will point to that, which abstracts away whether it points to bcache0, 1 ,
or N.

/dev/disk/by-dname/foo -> ../../../bcache/by-uuid/  ->
../../bcacheN

[Bug 1200296] Re: [MIR] spice-vdagent

2017-11-30 Thread Seth Arnold
I reviewed spice-vdagent 0.17.0-1ubuntu1 as checked into zesty. This
shouldn't be considered a full audit but rather a quick gauge of
maintainability.

spice-vdagent provides some services between virtual machine host and
guests to make the experience less jarring.

One CVE is in our database for the Windows client.

- Build-Depends: debhelper, pkg-config, dh-systemd, libspice-protocol-dev,
  libdbus-1-dev, libx11-dev, libxrandr-dev, libxfixes-dev,
  desktop-file-utils, libxinerama-dev, libpciaccess-dev, autoconf, automake,
  libglib2.0-dev, systemd, libsystemd-dev, libasound2-dev
- Provides a client and server; both daemonize
- pre/post inst/rm scripts automatically generated
- spice-vdagent init script starts the guest daemon, modprobes uinput
- spice-vdagentd and spice-vdagent systemd service files, start their
  daemons
- no dbus services
- No setuid or setgid files
- Two executables in PATH /usr/bin/spice-vdagent and
  /usr/sbin/spice-vdagentd
- No sudo fragments
- One udev rule for virtio-ports
- No test suite
- No cron
- Clean build logs

- Subprocesses spawned using system(), unsafe construction, reported
  upstream
- Memory management looked good enough; some cases of malloc(a*b) but 'b'
was often 4, 8, maybe 16, and 'a' calculated from data on the wire in a
fashion that looked difficult to really abuse.
- File IO looked safe except for uses of system()
- Logging looked safe
- No environment variable use
- chmod(socket, 0666) looked out of place
- other privileged ioctl() calls looked fine
- No cryptography
- Does networking; a quick skim looked like all Unix Domain Sockets
- I didn't see privileged portions of the code
- No tmp files
- No WebKit
- No PolicyKit
- Clean cppcheck

Here's some notes I collected while reviewing spice-vdagent:

- vdagent_file_xfers_data() does not escape xfers->save_dir before giving
it to the shell (CVE-2017-15108 was assigned for this issue)
- vdagent_file_xfers_data() does not check snprintf() return code; a
too-long xfers->save_dir could cause the & or ' or any number of other
  characters to go missing.
- daemonize() from ./src/vdagentd.c only forks once
- daemonize() from ./src/vdagent.c only forks once
- why does main() in ./src/vdagentd.c set vdagentd_socket to 0666

This symlink looks out of place:

/usr/share/gdm/greeter/autostart/spice-vdagent.desktop ->
/etc/xdg/autostart/spice-vdagent.desktop

Please make sure
https://cgit.freedesktop.org/spice/linux/vd_agent/commit/?id=8ba174816d245757e743e636df357910e1d5eb61
is included in our package before promoting the package.

Security team ACK for promoting spice-vdagent to main.

Thanks

[Bug 1731595] Re: L3 HA: multiple agents are active at the same time

https://git.openstack.org/cgit/openstack/neutron/commit/?id=9ed693228f90251c0f03fb842ef19628b439f9bc

Branch:master

commit 9ed693228f90251c0f03fb842ef19628b439f9bc
Author: venkata anil
Date: Thu Nov 23 18:40:30 2017 +

Call update_all_ha_network_port_statuses on agent start

As explained in bug [1] when l3 agent fails to report state to the
server, its state is set to AGENT_REVIVED, triggering
fetch_and_sync_all_routers, which will set all its HA network ports
to DOWN, resulting in
1) ovs agent rewiring these ports and setting status to ACTIVE
2) when these ports are active, server sends router update to l3 agent
As server, ovs and l3 agents are busy with this processing, l3 agent
may fail again reporting state, repeating this process.

As l3 agent is repeatedly processing same routers, SIGHUPs are
frequently sent to keepalived, resulting in multiple masters.

To fix this, we call update_all_ha_network_port_statuses in l3 agent
start instead of calling from fetch_and_sync_all_routers.

[Bug 911591] Re: gnome-shell crashes when resizing OpenGL window

2017-11-30 Thread James Cuzella
Bug seems to be reported also elsewhere:

- ArchLinux: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=231158
- RedHat: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1250128

The RHEL bug report mentions that they have Xorg configured without
RandR support. I do see a message in my logs that says gdm has RandR
disabled for some reason:

Nov 30 15:25:53 saturn /usr/lib/gdm3/gdm-x-session[3918]: (--) RandR
disabled

I'm not sure why gdm wants to run with it disabled. I don't seem to
have a /etc/X11/xorg.conf file anymore... it's been quite some time
since I've even had to edit Xorg config in recent Ubuntu versions. Seems
like all this is managed by gdm-x-session now?

Could it be https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1479682 ?

If this affects virt-manager under a plain X session (as comment 30
states), then it's completely unrelated to either bugs (i.e. neither
Wayland nor Xwayland).

[Bug 911591] Re: gnome-shell crashes when resizing OpenGL window

2017-11-30 Thread James Cuzella
As original reporter stated, it usually appears related to OpenGL window
resize events. I have also noted that xrandr display resolution changes
can trigger the crash.

I see errors in dmesg that mention libmutter:

[Bug 1620636] Re: Fails to pair with Bose QC35 headphones

2017-11-30 Thread Konrad Zapałowicz
Hey,

I just have tried to pair the QC35 using bluez 5.42 and 5.46 and it did
pair. Could you capture HCI trace for me while you are pairing?

Type:

$ sudo btmon --write ~/bose-qc35.snoop

Then start searching for the headset and try to pair. Once pairing fails
kill the btmon and attach the .snoop file to this bug report.

Thanks.

Re: [Bug 1729145] Re: /dev/bcache/by-uuid links not created after reboot

2017-11-30 Thread Ryan Harper
It looks like there is some ordering issues:

This is a grep through /run/udev/links ; these are checked by udev-dev

# find . -name 'b250*'
./\x2fdisk\x2fby-uuid\x2f0a270acb-56b8-4498-8bad-b3bb149fe869/b250:1
./\x2fdisk\x2fby-uuid\x2f92b0868d-7e56-4956-8e55-2c90ebee4a72/b250:0
./\x2fbcache\x2fby-uuid\x2f92d882d8-38cd-4537-847b-6f9c40ba67b4/b250:1
./\x2fbcache\x2fby-uuid\x2f57e009b1-6bf4-42ea-abe0-334b10941a0b/b250:0

So both /dev/bcache/by-uuid and /dev/disk/by-uuid both point to the bcache
device (b250:0)

udevd shows this:

It would seem that the 'no longer belonging to ...bcache1' is the trigger
for the removal
however, 250:1 is indeed bcache1 device.

# ls -al /dev/bcache1
brw-rw 1 root disk 250, 1 Nov 30 23:39 /dev/bcache1

Looking at the systemd/udev/udev-event.c it appears that for entries in
the current udev database that don't have a new event associated with them
get the call to remove the old link

void udev_event_execute_rules()
  ...
  if (major(udev_device_get_devnum(dev)) > 0) {
bool apply;

/* remove/update possible left-over symlinks from
old database entry */
if (event->dev_db != NULL)
udev_node_update_old_links(dev,
event->dev_db);

Will need to crawl through the db to see what the the event->dev_db entry
is and where that get's set.

problem. Were any of you able to verify the fix yourselves? If necessary
I can try to reproduce the problem and fix in a VM.

[Bug 1735546] Re: [hyper-v] reloading netvsc issue on linux-azure 4.13.0-1001.1

2017-11-30 Thread Chris Valean
Adding this issue here, as in the past we saw linked issues between
netvsc reload and mtu change.

The same hung task failure occurs when changing the MTU on the
interface.

Repro steps:
ip link set dev eth0 mtu 3000
ip link set dev eth0 mtu 4500

At this point the command will hang and then run into the hung messages
after 120 seconds.

** Description changed:

On proposed 4.13.0-1001.1 linux-azure kernel reloading the netvsc module
will cause the VM network to stop working on WS2016.

Manual repro is easy, start a VM with that kernel and run:
  modprobe -r hv_netvsc
  modprobe hv_netvsc

At this point the command will hang and after 2 minutes the hung task
  messages will appear.

  Test env info:
  - ubuntu 16.04.3
- - Affected platforms: WS2016 and WS2016 fall update - 1709
+ - Affected platforms:
+ a) WS2016 and WS2016 fall update - 1709
+ b) WS2012R2

4.11 series linux-azure are not showing this behavior.
- This seems to affect only WS2016, and it is functional on WS2012R2.

That's what you get when Ubuntu syncs packages from Debian experimental

The mapnik::freetype_engine issue should be fixed with Mapnik 3.0.17 and

into Ubuntu for inclusion in the next LTS.

2017-11-30 Thread Þór Sigurðsson
This bug was also in (K)Ubuntu 16.04 and 17.04 (don't know about 16.10).

In Linux Mint (even the latest one, 18.2) the bug is NOT found.

I'm using Xorg drivers, not Wayland, although a wayland-ish Mesa library
is installed.

This bug _really_ should be fixed. It can't be that tough? What is MINT
doing to their brush-up of Ubuntu that Ubuntu is not doing?

[Bug 1735023] Re: 'Download updates while installing Ubuntu' install option doesn't work

2017-11-30 Thread Brian Murray
If you look in /var/cache/apt/archives after installing Ubuntu you'll
notice that the packages were in fact downloaded, they just have not
been installed.

[Bug 1732686] Re: Asus Fx553VD - Keyboard LED backlight controls are not working # kernel-bug-reported-upstream

2017-11-30 Thread Alexandre Pereira Nunes
Glad it worked for you. For anyone who has linux-stable on git (like
me), if your kernel version lacks this, it's a matter of git cherry-pick
339ee3fcbdab736adbc30b7a3d675005c61a2a40 and there you go.

Btw this should work on any "gamer" laptop who have this USB keyboard:
Bus 001 Device 006: ID 0b05:1854 ASUSTek Computer, Inc.
