[Bug 1737379] [NEW] display backlight turns full on every minute
Public bug reported: Today I started working at about 6 am with lights off before the sunrise. So I set the display backlight on my notebook at the minimum. I used notebook keyboard buttons for this. Then I realised that night light (which makes display colors warm) is already off. I opened Settings window, navigated to Devices -> Monitors screen and set the night light to the manual mode. I changed the upper limit to 8 am. The night light turned on immediately. Then I closed the Settings window. I worked for about an hour till 7 am. Then suddenly the backlight of the display started to turn full on about every minute. I changed it to the previous low level with the buttons but it kept turning full on in after about a minute. Changing any settings in the Power tab didn't help. The only thing that helped was: chmod -w /sys/class/backlight/*/brightness After I ran the command the problem is gone. The only effect I still see is: the slider in the Power tab of the settings window is switching to the full on position about every minute. Without any input from me of course. [Bug 1724650] Re: [Firmware Bug]: TSC_DEADLINE disabled due to Errata; please update microcode to version: 0x25 (or later)
Hello ! I've been having this bug as well, when trying to install Ubuntu 17.10 (or fedora 27) in dual boot, and any linux distrib on Virtual Machine (Virtual Box). The problem is that I can't even boot under Linux (because I can't install it, and I face this problem even with a live-session), so I can't try the commands previously advised. Also, I'm kind of new to the Linux world, so I have no idea on how to "insert intel-ucode.img (taken from recent arch linux iso) as first initrd into grub.cfg". Any clue ? Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Reviewing your dmesg attachment in this bug report it seems that there is a problem with your hardware. I recommend performing a back up and then investigating the situation. Measures you might take include checking cable connections and using software tools to investigate the health of your hardware. cloud-init user-data customization seems to be an easy solution for this: https://github.com/juju/juju/pull/8177 (merged) https://github.com/juju/juju/pull/8177/files https://github.com/juju/juju/pull/8188 (pending) https://github.com/juju/juju/pull/8188/files It adds several useful mechanisms: 1. cloudinit-userdata model config key 2. a way to execute certain runcmd commands before Juju's own commands and after them * runcmd key is not allowed in userdata because it would override everything * preruncmd - before Juju-generated runcmd * postruncmd - after Juju-generated runcmd We can simply use cloud-init-provided config options with that: http://cloudinit.readthedocs.io/en/latest/topics/examples.html#add-apt-repositories http://cloudinit.readthedocs.io/en/latest/topics/examples.html#additional-apt-configuration disable_suites: [$RELEASE-security] or just: primary: ... uri: http:///ubuntu ... security: uri: http:///ubuntu I think that we can rely on that instead of using apt-mirror now. The PRs above are mostly about allowing a user to customize userdata. The actual delivery to the provider code path (at least when I look at MAAS) has been there for a while: https://github.com/juju/juju/blame/juju-2.3.1/provider/maas/environ.go#L851-L887 https://github.com/juju/gomaasapi/blame/master/machine.go#L226-L262 https://github.com/maas/maas/blame/2.3.0/src/maasserver/api/machines.py#L463-L469 Passing non-Juju-generated user-data to containers is also addressed in the above PRs AFAIKs. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1599886 Title: apt-mirror does not override security.ubuntu.com for containers on trusty To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/juju/+bug/1599886/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1737053] Re: [MIR] brotli
** Description changed: Availability Built for all supported architectures. In sync with Debian. Rationale = brotli is a file compression format and library developed and maintained by Google. brotli is required by the WOFF 2.0 format for compressed web fonts. brotli and woff2 are libraries that are technically already in main because they are bundled in Firefox and webkit2gtk. The next major stable release of webkit2gtk, 2.20, will be released in March. It drops those 2 bundled libraries. I think our options are basically 1) Bundle those libraries anyway, or 2) Approve this MIR, or 3) Drop support for the WOFF2 format in webkit2gtk Security brotli is a security-sensitive library. - There is an open security bug for xenial that can be fixed by syncing - 0.3.0+dfsg-3 from Debian. + There is an open security bug for xenial. See LP: #1737364 https://security-tracker.debian.org/tracker/source-package/brotli https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/brotli/+cve Quality assurance = - Ubuntu Desktop Bugs is subscribed. - dh_auto_test runs upstream build tests. Test failure would fail the build. - New autopkgtests pass on all arches: http://autopkgtest.ubuntu.com/packages/b/brotli https://ci.debian.net/packages/b/brotli/ https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/brotli https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?src=brotli https://github.com/google/brotli/issues Dependencies No universe binary dependencies Standards compliance 4.1.1, debhelper compat 10, dh7 simple rules Maintenance === Actively maintained: https://github.com/google/brotli Not team maintained in Debian. https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/brotli Other Info == webkit2gtk is managed similar to Firefox and Chromium. So far, new releases are pushed to Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and newer as security updates, but the Ubuntu Security Team does not guarantee security support for webkit2gtk. I'm waiting until woff2 is accepted into Debian and Ubuntu to file the woff2 MIR. See https://bugs.debian.org/883828 We are going to need to backport brotli and woff2 into main as security updates for 16.04 LTS and 17.10. The new version of brotli adds new binary packages (in particular, the C library needed by woff2 and webkit2gtk). brotli has no reverse dependencies in 16.04 and 17.10. (fonttools is a reverse-dependency in 18.04.) brotli has a bizarre build system. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1737053 Title: [MIR] brotli To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/brotli/+bug/1737053/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1737364] [NEW] 16.04: Fix CVE-2016-1968 and CVE-2016-1624 for brotli
*** This bug is a security vulnerability *** Public security bug reported: Impact -- Integer underflow could be targeted as a buffer overflow https://security-tracker.debian.org/tracker/source-package/brotli Debdiff attached. Because brotli is embedded in web browsers for WOFF2 support (to be somewhat fixed by the proposed brotli MIR), this issue was already mentioned in https://usn.ubuntu.com/usn/USN-2917-1/ (Firefox) Luke Li discovered a buffer overflow during Brotli decompression in some circumstances. If a user were tricked in to opening a specially crafted website, an attacker could potentially exploit this to cause a denial of service via application crash, or execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the user invoking Firefox. (CVE-2016-1968) https://usn.ubuntu.com/usn/USN-2895-1/ (Oxide) An integer underflow was discovered in Brotli. If a user were tricked in to opening a specially crafted website, an attacker could potentially exploit this to cause a denial of service via application crash, or execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the user invoking the program. (CVE-2016-1624) Regression Potential This update was published in Debian unstable/testing as 0.3.0+dfsg-3 from late March to mid June 2016 when it was superseded by a newer version. The Ubuntu security sync tool wasn't able to retrieve this version now. brotli has no reverse dependencies in Ubuntu and is in universe. Testing Done Only a simple build test. There is a build test to ensure basic functionality of brotli with both python2 and python3. Other Info -- The main purpose of this security update is to clear up the security history section of MIR LP: #1737053. It is mentioned in the MIR bug that it is intended for brotli 1.0.2 to be backported to Ubuntu 16.04 and 17.10 as a security update (and promoted to main there), after 17.04 reaches End of Life. ** Affects: brotli (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: patch xenial -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1737364 Title: 16.04: Fix CVE-2016-1968 and CVE-2016-1624 for brotli To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/brotli/+bug/1737364/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
