[Bug 1740363] [NEW] does not see the scanner
Public bug reported: Have a Samsung CLX-2160 worked properly with 17.04. After upgrading to 17.10 I can get printouts without any problems but when try xSane or SimpleScan I get a message saying that the system did not find a scanner. [Bug 1734147] Re: Ubuntu 17.10 corrupting BIOS - many LENOVO laptops models
I have a Lenovo Y50 laptop that was affected by this issue. Following these instructions https://www.fossmint.com/ukuu-install-and-upgrade- linux-kernels-in-ubuntu/ I installed Ukuu and updated my Linux kernel to 4.14.9 after which I could boot from a USB thumb drive with Linux Mint and a second hard drive with Windows 10. FYIAfter I installed Ukuu I attempted to update the kernel to 4.14.9 and restarted the computer but it still showed the old kernel from Ukuu and typing "uname -a" in a terminal. I restarted again and then turned the computer off and back on but still had the old kernel. I once again used Ukuu to update the kernel and then restated and this time it upgraded resulting in my computer working properly. The instructions did not state to reboot after installing Ukuu but I am guessing this is why I could not upgrade my Ubuntu kernel the first time and why it did upgrade the 2nd time I tried. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1734147 Title: Ubuntu 17.10 corrupting BIOS - many LENOVO laptops models To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/linux/+bug/1734147/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1688018] Re: DNS server from vpn connection is not being used after network-manager upgrade to 1.2.6
As a workaround, I commented out dns=dnsmasq in /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf. Now network manager adds VPN DNS servers to /etc/resolv.conf and everything works as expected. As an additional benefit, it also adds and uses additional search domains but only with "Use this connection only for resources on its network" unchecked, so all traffic is routed to the tunnel. [Bug 1396787] Re: checking trust of archives eats a lot of cpu
After digging a bit deeper I found out that that the default configuration of /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/50unattended-upgrades is exactly the same as I had in my experiment i.e. - the ${distro_id}:${distro_codename}-security origin is ENABLED - the ${distro_id}:${distro_codename}-updates and others origin are DISABLED The consequences are the following. A fresh install of Ubuntu LTS e.g. 16.04 keeps installing the *-security updates, but not the *-updates ones. The number of packages with new versions in *-updates repository keeps growing unless somebody installs them manually. It is a couple of clicks, but still many people never do it. As the list of upgradable packages grows, unattended-upgrades get slower and slower to the point that it may take hours to complete. Effectively, the automatic updates may no longer work at all depending on how a given system is used. Also the user experience gets worse with CPU busy executing the unattended- upgrades script. All in all, I consider it a serious issue that requires attention. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1396787 Title: checking trust of archives eats a lot of cpu To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unattended-upgrades/+bug/1396787/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1396787] Re: checking trust of archives eats a lot of cpu
I've hit the same bug and did some investigation. I profiled the unattended-upgrade script with python's cProfile and attached the result. I've run: sudo python3 -m cProfile -s time /usr/bin/unattended-upgrade -d -v on Ubuntu 16.04.3 booted from live cd after uncommenting the "${distro_id}:${distro_codename}-security"; line in /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/50unattended-upgrades. Otherwise no packages are selected for an upgrade and the issue doesn't reproduce. It turns out that several functions in apt's cache are called millions of times. I tracked it down to the quadratic nature of the algorithm, which appears to come from the very initial version of the script: https://github.com/mvo5/unattended-upgrades/blob/0ec001874ad48300199565f8591818ca75bc5f9f/unattended.py#L47 The check_changes_for_sanity() function loops over all packages in the cache. This function is called for every package marked for upgrade. The problem appears on systems with many packages to upgrade (in my case it was 169). It makes the initial unattended-upgrades run ridiculously slow. Also, on systems configured to only perform security updates, but not other updates there's always a considerable list of packages to upgrade. It renders unattended-upgrades almost unusable on such systems. I think this is a serious issue and the algorithm should be overhauled. Doing so many checks seems unnecessary. ** Attachment added: "unatended-upgrade-profile" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unattended-upgrades/+bug/1396787/+attachment/5028172/+files/unatended-upgrade-profile -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1396787 Title: checking trust of archives eats a lot of cpu To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unattended-upgrades/+bug/1396787/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1740319] [NEW] Dosbox should be 32-bit version on 64-bit
Public bug reported: 16-bit DOS games are unplayable in the 64-bit version of Dosbox. GoG.com games come with a 32-bit version of Dosbox, and this runs excellently. On Ubuntu, the 32-bit version also runs excellently. The 64-bit version lags immensely and makes games unplayable. Dosbox and its associated libraries should be made available on 32-bit always and be excempt of the no-packaging-32-bit in the future to begin with. [Bug 1734147] Re: Ubuntu 17.10 corrupting BIOS - many LENOVO laptops models
As I see that changing the kernel version reanimates laptops, I forgot to mention in my initial luck-story at #275 what I also did when was reanimating my laptop. I took SSD with Ubuntu 17.10 with kernel v4.13.0-22 from laptop which was not damaged , put it into damaged laptop, tried to run OS - no luck, then reboot and I tried one more time via GRUB menu via selecting recovery mode. Ubuntu entered to cmd mode. Then I turned laptop off and simply resinstalled OS on the HDD from damaged laptop by putting this HDD into not damaged laptop. Rest details can be found at #275. Maybe this dancing helped me and can help someone else.

[Bug 1651609] Re: Missing hugepages in xenial on 4.4.0-36-generic
Sending in my report now. My issue *maybe* is related to cgroups/docker. I don't think I saw this issue until I started trying to request hugepages from a docker container. But from what I can see, some processes just... do not give up the pages after they exit. At least not in a way that the kernel can pick up on. Instead I end up with pages that are not available, I cannot free them, and I can find no evidence of them in /dev/hugepages, ipcs, or /proc/*/numa_maps. They are just ghosts! ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1651609 Title: Missing hugepages in xenial on 4.4.0-36-generic To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1651609/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
