[Bug 1748122] [NEW] incorrect tools.conf template is shipped with Ubuntu

2018-02-07 Thread Dariusz Gadomski
Public bug reported:

The tools.conf template shipped with Ubuntu (debian/local/tools.conf) is
incorrect.

It's current contents:
bindir = "/usr/bin"
do not mean anything to open-vm-tools - it's not interpreted in any way by
vmtoolsd.

Moreover, on the first launch this content is cleared by a piece of code
doing a "config upgrade".

I believe replacing it with a more meaningful content is necessary.

** Affects: open-vm-tools (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 1718227] Re: replacement of ifupdown with netplan needs integration for /etc/network/if{up, down}.d scripts

2018-02-07 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
FYI: The discussion in https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=889010
nicely outlined that we rely on those hooks in chrony.
That makes having them working critical for 18.04 to have it working correctly
for late or changing network topology.

We (cyphermox and me) discussed how I could convert the chrony hooks but found
not clear solution. It ended in the app needing to listen for netlink events,
but we can't/won't do that for all the affected packages.
That said implementing sort of a generic solution a package can plug into gets
more and more important.

[Bug 1380251] Re: cw problems with OSS

2018-02-07 Thread PaulSchulz
I was having a similar issue -  Ubuntu 17.10.

It started to work for me after I installed source build dependencies.

  sudo apt-get build-dep cw

A package (or two) need to be moved into the binary package
dependancies. At this stage I don't know which ones they would be.

share a screenshot of it)

Can you share the output of the following command, run in a terminal:

ls -l /var/crash/

[Bug 1747744] Re: [regression] Video playback in totem is corrupted in X11

2018-02-07 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Although this does work:

gst-launch-1.0 filesrc location=bbb_sunflower_1080p_60fps_normal.mp4 !
qtdemux ! avdec_h264 ! clutterautovideosink

So it's the combination vaapidecodebin + clutterautovideosink that
doesn't work any more.

[Bug 1747744] Re: [regression] Video playback in totem is corrupted in X11

2018-02-07 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Similarly to comment #13

THESE WORK:

gst-play-1.0 --videosink glimagesink bbb_sunflower_1080p_60fps_normal.mp4
gst-play-1.0 --videosink xvimagesink bbb_sunflower_1080p_60fps_normal.mp4
gst-play-1.0 --videosink ximagesink bbb_sunflower_1080p_60fps_normal.mp4

THIS DOESN'T:

gst-play-1.0 --videosink clutterautovideosink
bbb_sunflower_1080p_60fps_normal.mp4

Re: [Bug 1734021] Re: No volume icon

2018-02-07 Thread fossfreedom
By default the volume icon is hidden since most DEs have a very visible
icon already on the desktop.

However if you want individual app based control you can use the plugin
preferences to change the default look and feel.

>From the headerbar button or global menu depending upon which DE you are
using

Choose plugins. Click on alternative toolbar and click the bottom left icon
to open the plugin preferences for the applet.

There is a tick box to display the volume icon

Restart rhythmbox and the icon will be displayed.

[Bug 1748098] [NEW] simple-scan crashes when running simple-scan from the command line when simple-scan is already running

2018-02-07 Thread Lyn Perrine
Public bug reported:

To reproduce open simple-scan then open a terminal and execute simple-
scan.

simple-scan:
  Installed: 3.26.3-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 3.26.3-0ubuntu1
  Version table:

I expected the original simple-scan to stay open when I ran simple-scan from
the terminal with it already open. Instead simple-scan crashed.

[Bug 1747744] Re: [regression] Video playback in totem is corrupted in X11

2018-02-07 Thread Daniel van Vugt
OK, so it sounds like the regression probably occurred in Mesa 17.3
recently, and it looks like it only affects clutterautovideosink (used
by Totem) in Xorg sessions.

THESE WORK:

gst-launch-1.0 filesrc location=bbb_sunflower_1080p_60fps_normal.mp4 !
qtdemux ! vaapidecodebin ! glimagesink

gst-launch-1.0 filesrc location=bbb_sunflower_1080p_60fps_normal.mp4 !
qtdemux ! vaapidecodebin ! ximagesink

gst-launch-1.0 filesrc location=bbb_sunflower_1080p_60fps_normal.mp4 !
qtdemux ! vaapidecodebin ! xvimagesink

THIS DOESN'T WORK:

gst-launch-1.0 filesrc location=bbb_sunflower_1080p_60fps_normal.mp4 !
qtdemux ! vaapidecodebin ! clutterautovideosink

[Bug 1748095] [NEW] Non-root user can reboot machine from the command line

2018-02-07 Thread Rocko
Public bug reported:

Open a gnome-terminal as your normal user and type 'reboot' and ENTER.
The PC reboots immediately, losing all unsaved work for all users (this
is the case on both my VM and laptop running Ubuntu 18.04, so I don't
think it's a weird configuration issue).

In the old days, didn't you have to be root (or sudoed) for this command
to work?

While we're on the subject, wouldn't it be nicer if the reboot command
(ie when run as root) asked you to confirm before executing, pointing
out that all unsaved work for all users will be lost?

Note that you can't reboot a server if you are logged in via ssh as a
non-root user:

Failed to set wall message, ignoring: Interactive authentication required.
Failed to reboot system via logind: Interactive authentication required.
Failed to open /dev/initctl: Permission denied
Failed to talk to init daemon.

I am assuming this is a systemd issue, because reboot just links to systemctl,
and systemctl can be executed by non-root users:

$ ll /sbin/reboot /bin/systemctl
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 182352 Dec 12 21:25 /bin/systemctl*

This bug bite me on a daily basis, too (in Artful). I'm currently

Every time I launch a browser, an error message pops up telling me the browser

Everything works, but Xubuntu tells me it isn't.

[Bug 1747711] Re: file mis-identifies modern executables as application/x-sharedlib

2018-02-07 Thread scruss
** Information type changed from Private Security to Public Security

** Description changed:

  file doesn't recognize modern PIE (Position Independent Executable) x86
  executables as such, reporting them as “application/x-sharedlib”.
  Consequently, only non-PIE executables can be opened in graphical file
  managers such as nautilus. This may cause a minor (?) security risk if a
  commonly-published workaround is attempted.

  Expected behaviour:

- $ echo "int main() { return 0; }" > foo.c
- $ gcc -o foo foo.c
- $ file foo
- foo: ELF 64-bit LSB shared object, x86-64, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically
linked, interpreter /lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2, for GNU/Linux 3.2.0,
BuildID[sha1]=6e7749f995a89a53f74ec29d3c16fcf3f56be90f, not stripped
- $ file --mime-type foo
- foo: application/x-executable
+ $ echo "int main() { return 0; }" > foo.c
+ $ gcc -o foo foo.c
+ $ file foo
+ foo: ELF 64-bit LSB executable, x86-64, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically
linked, interpreter /lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2, for GNU/Linux 3.2.0,
BuildID[sha1]=6e7749f995a89a53f74ec29d3c16fcf3f56be90f, not stripped
+ $ file --mime-type foo
+ foo: application/x-executable

  Actual behaviour:

- $ echo "int main() { return 0; }" > foo.c
- $ gcc -o foo foo.c
- $ file foo
- foo: ELF 64-bit LSB shared object, x86-64, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically
linked, interpreter /lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2, for GNU/Linux 3.2.0,
BuildID[sha1]=6e7749f995a89a53f74ec29d3c16fcf3f56be90f, not stripped
- $ file --mime-type foo
- foo: application/x-sharedlib
+ $ echo "int main() { return 0; }" > foo.c
+ $ gcc -o foo foo.c
+ $ file foo
+ foo: ELF 64-bit LSB shared object, x86-64, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically
linked, interpreter /lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2, for GNU/Linux 3.2.0,
BuildID[sha1]=6e7749f995a89a53f74ec29d3c16fcf3f56be90f, not stripped
+ $ file --mime-type foo
+ foo: application/x-sharedlib

  Workaround (unsafe?):

- $ echo "int main() { return 0; }" > foo.c
- $ gcc -o foo-nopie foo.c -no-pie

  gcc now defaults to building with PIE enabled for security reasons.

  Also affects: nautilus (and likely other graphical file managers like
  those on Lubuntu) - because nautilus uses mime-type to determine if a
  file is executable, double-click to run a program no longer works.

  Also noted on: Gnome Bugs -
  https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=737849 (2014) - before PIE
  became the default build option.

  This may be an upstream issue. This may not affect architectures outside
  x86.*

I should be. You can use `uname -r` to check the kernel version.

No. not really. I guess install these packages directly on your machine
is a better way to do it.

[Bug 1748070] [NEW] Bionic update to v4.14.18 stable release

2018-02-07 Thread Seth Forshee
Public bug reported:

SRU Justification

Impact:
   The upstream process for stable tree updates is quite similar
   in scope to the Ubuntu SRU process, e.g., each patch has to
   demonstrably fix a bug, and each patch is vetted by upstream
   by originating either directly from a mainline/stable Linux tree or
   a minimally backported form of that patch. The v4.14.18 upstream stable
   patch set is now available. It should be included in the Ubuntu
