[Bug 1753180] Re: FFe: Sync hugo 0.37-2 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

2018-03-18 Thread Hans Joachim Desserud
Thanks for reporting.

I haven't followed the complete discussion, but now that hugo 0.37.1-1
is available in Ubuntu bionic, I believe this is fixed. (Or possibly
superseded by bug 1754531 where the newer version was synced...)

[Bug 1736116] Re: [SRU] Host with kernel 4.13 freezes when starting a VM with VirtualBox

2018-03-18 Thread Steffen Hemer
My previously reported result was on a Core i5-2520M, some deeper
testing was performed on a Celeron J1900:

Running perfectly on a 4.4.0-116 and switching to 4.13.0-37 runs stable
for about a day now. No problems noticed so far.

it didn't say the name of the software or the version!

[Bug 1756658] [NEW] Firefox Desktop icon is now very big, twice what it was

2018-03-18 Thread Dave H
Public bug reported:

Hi, after running a normal ubuntu update last week my desktop Firefox icon has
doubled in size. Please see picture attached. This has only effected the
desktop icon, not the left hand bar icons.
If I right click on my unity desktop (16.04 LTS) and try to resize the icon its
highlighted but cant be changed. The option to "restore original size" is also
grayed out, so I assume that unity thinks the icon size is correct. If I delete
it and drag a new icon from the HUD onto the desktop it to goes to the large
size. If feels as if Firefox themselves have change the resolution of the icon
making it bigger.

Thanks

Dave H

[Bug 1756659] [NEW] Installation problem: Difficult to enter boot option

2018-03-18 Thread Hadmut Danisch
Public bug reported:

Just a feedback from testing a 18.04 daily build image.

I'm using the HP Microservers for years, they work pretty well with
Ubuntu, except for a particular detail: The graphics of all generations
of machines does not work out of the box with Ubuntu, it completely
blocks and the X server hangs and even the console has trouble.

Easy fix: the kernel options need nosplash nomodeset and everything
is fine. Pretty simple.

So usually it is easy to give that as additional parameters in grub when
booting for the first time or log in over ssh and just add it to
/etc/default/grub, to make things run. Usually not a problem since Microservers
are usually used headless, i.e. without X11.

Now I installed a daily desktop build version of 18.04 (server edition
not yet available) on a recent Gen10 machine, installation process
smooth an without any problems, but then could not login after
rebooting. I got the login mask from gdm, but after entering the
password, the desktop froze, no way to login over console or network.

Problem: It took me six unhealthy reboot attempts (each time with brute
force reset of the machine by turning the power off, since no way to
cleanly shut down or reboot the machine) to finally get into the grub
menu and to enter these options, because grub is invisible at the
default installation and so fast, that it is difficult to get the
required key pressed at the small window in time where it's possible.
After booting with nosplash nomodeset the machine was working normally
and putting it into /etc/default/grub solved the problem (once I
managed to get into the machine).

However, having to kill the machine the hard way several times just to
get into the grub menu is not really clean and healthy. And IMHO an
unexperienced user would not be able to get this running and cleanly
installed. Which somehow contradicts the desktop edition's installation
process designed to keep things easy and suitable for non-experts.

[Bug 1756656] [NEW] Poor selection of install options (tasks) in the server edition (PXE vs. Image)

2018-03-18 Thread Hadmut Danisch
Public bug reported:

Hi,

this is some comment about the installation options (Tasks) offered at
the end of the server cd image's installation process. Please use the
option list from the PXE installer.

Reason:

For more than a decade I've been using the PXE installation process to
install my ubuntu machines, because that installation process was just
perfect, exactly what's needed.

The graphical installation process of the desktop edition was too
unflexible (e.g. about encrypted or raid partitions) and always
installed a graphical desktop.

The server edition is almost similar to the PXE process, but the options
of things to install at the end is too limited, e.g. there's no Xubuntu
or Lubunt to install. In contrast, the PXE has a much better list.

Until some years ago, Ubuntu offered an alternative installation
edition, similar to PXE, but that vanished. If I needed to install
ubuntu from a USB device, I preferred the Lubuntu edition then, since it
comes close to the PXE installation process.

However, it would really be nice if the server edition would offer the
full option (task) list as given in the PXE image. The PXE installation
process was just the best and most powerful of all ubuntu installation
methods. But there's more and more modern hardware requiring an UEFI
installation which (to the best of my knowledge) does not work with PXE.

I've installed virtualbox (and virtualbox-qt) 5.1.34-dfsg-

1754991. I haven't done a thorough regression test, but everything else
seems to work as expected.

Thanks for updating, LocutusOfBorg :)

[Bug 1756585] Re: unity session without window decorations, panel and launcher

2018-03-18 Thread Dieter Maurer
Downgrading of the above packages from "xenial-updates" to "xenial" has
not solved the problem. Further analysis is for the "xenial-updates"
versions.

At the beginning of the "unity session", "top" reveals a very high CPU
(and disk) usage by "dconf-service". Apparently, it is used by "compiz-
config-profile-setter unity". Today's trials ended with an "unexpected
termination" of this program. Starting it "by hand" gives:

[Bug 1756651] [NEW] Xubuntu: "remove media" message is not dislayed after installation

2018-03-18 Thread Alistair Buxton
Public bug reported:

To reproduce:

1. Boot up the Xubuntu 18.04 desktop AMD64 installer ISO
2. Select "Install Xubuntu" at the menu (NOT live desktop.)
3. Proceed through the installation as normal.

Result:

At the end of installation a black screen with white error messages is
displayed.

Expected result:

A message reading "Please remove the boot media and press enter" should
be displayed.

Workaround:

Press alt + left arrow key to switch VT and you will see the message.
The installer is switch to the wrong VT at the end of installation. Or
not switching at all.

[Bug 1748747] Re: Laptop turns of when secondary battery is empty while main battery is still charged.

2018-03-18 Thread Christoph Grimmer-Dietrich
Joseph, since I am using the laptop as main working device I am very
reluctant to switch from the ubuntu custom kernel to mainline and let
the machine die willingly. I got a pointer via AskUbuntu
(https://askubuntu.com/questions/961278/how-to-prevent-shutdown-when-
one-of-two-batteries-is-empty) that UPower is likely to be the real
culprit (https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Linux-Discussion/How-to-get-dual-
battery-to-switch-without-powering-off-in-Linux/td-p/3890605).

I will now tell UPower to warn instead of shutting down, turn on the
gnome power management again and check whether the problem stays. If
that is the case I will go ahead an run 4.16 :-)
