[Bug 1760266] [NEW] Will not install debs
Public bug reported: When I open a deb file with gdebi, all loads fine. When I click on install, it will ask for authentication as normal, but it will not actually install anything after. It flashes something I Cannot see/read, then I get the reloading bar, and when it is done reloading, it is the same initial window offering to install. It does not say installed or have any of the associated options, like reinstall. I can verify the package is not actually getting installed and it is not just a GUI glitch. I am able to install the same deb files using "Software Install" as well as dpkg without any issues. Package Manager also works fine, and I use it for most all things. I also use apt and apt-get, which both also work fine. I am using Ubuntu 18.04 MATE 1.20, all updates current always within 24 hours. I run updates about twice per day. [Bug 1760264] Re: New version of intel-microcode freezes computer
For me, both intel-microcode 3.20180312.0~ubuntu17.10.1 amd64 and linux- image-4.13.0-37-generic 4.13.0-37.42 amd64 got installed at the same time. On my next boot and every boot after that, my computer would hang hard after I typed in my password at the login screen and hit enter. My cursor would appear on a black screen, and then it hung. I did not try downgrading intel-microcode, but I did try selecting linux-image-4.13.0-36-generic 4.13.0-36.40 amd64 in GRUB on boot. That did work. So I believe we may have found two different workarounds to the same bug, maybe. I was able to SSH into the computer from a different machine while at the login screen and run journalctl -f before I tried to log in, and that got me more log entries than were written to disk. But, I still feel like I did not get to see the final actions before the hang; they never got logged or didn't make it over the SSH tunnel. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1760264 Title: New version of intel-microcode freezes computer To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/intel-microcode/+bug/1760264/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1760261] [NEW] log in to GUI in U-MATE daily 18.04 fails
Public bug reported: Tried two installs on a daily of U-MATE 18.04 burned to DVD, and each time the install seemed to go well, no errors reported, no crash reports filed . . . on reboot, grub loads and the MATE log in window opens, typing the password brings a black screen for a few seconds, and then back to the log in window. Tried to install another DE to test whether that would work and that also failed. Ran "dpkg" in the recovery system . . . found some updates but couldn't seem to download them; back into TTY and ran update/upgrade . . . showed 75 packages, which it installed . . . didn't fix the failure to log in problem. Did an "ls -l /home/username" . . . and it showed the /home contents of the directory as being there, but the system is not logging into the GUI. [Bug 1760206] Re: Firefox cant install extensions from extensions.gnome.org
Steps to follow when a problem comes up: - search a similar issue on the net; maybe you can fix it yourself. - glance for help on ubuntuforums - search and/or ask on askubuntu - if its really a bug, then report it via the required script. Otherwise ask yourself if you are doing things the right way. http://www.ubuntubuzz.com/2017/10/install-gnome-shell-extensions-on-ubuntu-artful.html https://askubuntu.com/questions/5121/how-do-i-report-a-bug Note: extensions are better installed via the ubuntu archive now, for compatibility and avoid conflict/race with a different path. [Bug 1758699] Re: [CVE] JavaScript in a book can access local files using XMLHttpRequest
I have reached a point where I would like some guidance as to the contents of the patch for the CVE-2018-7889 Trusty backport. So, this is the line in src/calibre/gui2/viewer/bookmarkmanager.py that has been patched upstream for this: def item_to_bm(self, item): -return cPickle.loads(bytes(item.data(Qt.UserRole))) +return item.data(Qt.UserRole).copy() ( https://github.com/kovidgoyal/calibre/commit/aeb5b036a0bf657951756688b3c72bd68b6e4a7d ) Here is my attempt to backport it: def item_to_bm(self, item): -return cPickle.loads(bytes(item.data(Qt.UserRole).toPyObject())) +return item.data(Qt.UserRole).copy() This errors out on runtime with this error: "AttributeError: 'QVariant' object has no attribute 'copy'" I tried changing "return item.data(Qt.UserRole).copy()" to "return item.data(Qt.UserRole).toPyObject().copy()" but I'm thrown "TypeError: key PyQt4.QtCore.QString(u'pos') is not a string" I expect that there are somewhat significant codebase differences due to the fact that Trusty is based off of PyQt4 while Bionic is based off of PyQt5, but I am a bit stumped at why this error would be thrown. I've subscribed Marc directly because I have worked with him on this (briefly, via IRC), and I'm a bit out of time at the moment (18.04 is near) to be researching old PyQt4 syntax, but if I'm missing something obvious, please yell. [Bug 1760240] [NEW] Write past end of buffer in gtk/gtkrc.c gtk_rc_add_default_file

[Bug 1758946] Re: virtualbox-guest-utils update caused Synaptic to stop working
Hello, LocutusOfBorg. In version virtualbox-guest-x11 (5.1.34-dfsg-0ubuntu1.16.04.2) line 26 of the file /etc/X11/Xsession.d/98vboxadd-xclient now reads: notify-send "VBoxClient: the VirtualBox kernel service is not running. Exiting." In version virtualbox-guest-x11 (5.0.40-dfsg-0ubuntu1.16.04.2) line 26 of the file /etc/X11/Xsession.d/98vboxadd-xclient still read: true # "VBoxClient: the VirtualBox kernel service is not running. Exiting." It is imaginable that it is the notify-send is what makes Linux Mint 18.x malfunction. Maybe reverting to the old statement true # "VBoxClient: the VirtualBox kernel service is not running. Exiting." would work around the issue. Sadly, I cannot really test myself at the moment. The latest update of mintupdate has not only uninstalled the 3 virtualbox-guest-* packages, but also made sure they cannot be re-installed at all. Unless I find a way of reverting this specific package ban I may not be able to try myself at all.
