I can see that there is new file under :

/etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/openvpn@tcp2.service

we never needed such file before to run ovpn service.

[Bug 1682921] Re: sluggish system, kernel errors on Inspiron 1525

2018-05-25 Thread Zakhar
Hi, I will provide the confirmation (or not!) that this is a complete
workaround, along with the same confirmation on the "upstream" ticket I
opened for that bug: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=106422

Same as Kevin, the hardware is not mine, and I have to wait to have
direct access to it to really check that all goes well (the person using
the hardware is not an I.T. person, and can only switch it on and do
basic things)

The test will be done next week (between June 2nd and June 10th)

The 'clean' workaround would then be:
- edit /etc/default/grub and replace:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
with:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash video=SVIDEO-1:d"
- issue
sudo update-grub

That is to be sure the option sticks even when patched kernels are
proposed by the repository.

[Bug 1771650] Re: openvpn startup script isn't working in ubuntu 18.04

2018-05-25 Thread Fanar Webb
ok it worked this time, and it is still working even after restarting
the service

/etc/init.d/openvpn restart

ifconfig tun0

tun0: flags=4305 mtu 1500
inet 10.122.11.10 netmask 255.255.255.255 destination 10.0.11.9
inet6 fe80::82bc:c88a:6a62:bc0c  prefixlen 64  scopeid 0x20
unspec 00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00 txqueuelen 100
(UNSPEC)
RX packets 0 bytes 0 (0.0 B)
RX errors 0 dropped 0 overruns 0 frame 0
TX packets 15 bytes 1304 (1.3 KB)
TX errors 0 dropped 0 overruns 0 carrier 0 collisions 0

we shouldn't need to enable every profile by itself, should we ? we used
to just add .conf file with its requirements at /etc/openvpn (or even
under a subfolder there) and it would work normally.

Thank you for taking care of this anyway.

[Bug 1773484] [NEW] Login screen not moved to used monitor

2018-05-25 Thread Manfred Steiner
Public bug reported:

On Ubuntu 16.04 the login screen and system menu bar, ... is moved to
the monitor where the mouse pointer is located. On Ubuntu 18.04 login
dialog and system menues are restricted to the main monitor.

So if you have a notebook with defect lcd display you can work with it
using Ubuntu 16.04 and an external monitor, but you cannot work with
Ubuntu 18.04, because you are not able to login!

[Bug 1770374] Re: My login screen stays black

2018-05-25 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Dieter Meyer, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu
better.

1) Is this something that started to happen after an update? If so,
which and when precisely?

2) Regarding the kernel you are using (4.13.0-37.42-generic 4.13.13) it
appears you are manually booting this or have it pinned. Could you
please update to a supported kernel (4.15.x) and advise to the results?

3) If you disable the nvidia card in your BIOS, does this provide a
WORKAROUND?

[Bug 1771062] Re: LG 27UK650 Monitor Won't Come Back On After Inactivity Turn Off

2018-05-25 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Lonnie Lee Best, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu
better.

1) Is this something that started to happen after an update? If so,
which and when precisely?

2) To clarify, could you please describe how your computer is connected
to monitor (e.g. using a HDMI cord connecting both, using a
dongle/adapter, etc.)?

3) Regarding the use of kernel boot parameter acpi_backlight=vendor is
this required? If you remove it, is this issue still reproducible?

4) If you remove the nvidia drivers and use nouveau, is this
reproducible?

5) As per nvidia.com the latest driver version available for your card
is 390.59. hence, to see if this is already resolved in Ubuntu, could
you please test http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ and advise
to the results?

[Bug 1773198] Re: Sound volume for applications can become locked below global output volume.

2018-05-25 Thread mattiasje
Yes, I know that you can change the volume on a per-application basis.

The report is about applications being uncoupled from the master volume
setting through use of the volume control on a different application,
and then having the range of volume being limited below 100%.

Using the per-application volume settings is how you recover, but
recovery should not be necessary in the first place. It's not how Ubuntu
used to work before 18.04, it's unintuitive, and it's not at all obvious
what has happened.

Again, I don't think this is a bug in Totem, and I don't think the
things I was asked to add to the report serve any function besides
violating my privacy. But here you go.

[Bug 1773198] Re: Sound volume for applications can become locked below global output volume.

2018-05-25 Thread mattiasje
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected bionic

** Description changed:

Normal behavior, as far as I understand, is for all applications to have
the same sound volume unless you lower the volume for one manually in
the applications section of the sound settings. However, some
applications have their own own volume control that only affect the
volume of themselves and the global output volume, not other
applications. This can put those other applications below the global
  volume where they become stuck.

An example: you have the output volume at 50%. Rhythmbox is locked to
output volume and is also at 50%. Then you open a movie in totem. Sound
volume is low for that movie so you use totem's volume slider to
increase volume to 100%. When done you close totem and use the media
keys on the keyboard to lower the volume back to 50%. Since rhythmbox
stayed at 50% instead of following to 100%, it got stuck at half of
global volume and after lowering is now down to 25%. It can never go
above 50% with just the normal volume controls, you need to go into the
applications section of the sound menu and move its volume slider to
reset it to the same value as the global output volume.

This is especially a problem since you might increase the global volume
a lot in order to compensate for low volume, only for a newly opened
application to start playing sound at way too high a volume, a danger to
your ears and possibly your sound hardware. And a novice user is likely
to not understand what's wrong with their audio all of a sudden, and
feel forced to reboot to fix it.

- The same thing happens with the volume control in vlc so it's not just
- totem.

But that page is from the upstream GNOME Help and should be changed
there, so it would be great if you could submit an upstream issue too:

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-user-docs/issues

If you do, please post the URL of the upstream issue here.

[Bug 1767356] Re: [Compaq Presario A900 Notebook PC] ~5 minutes to boot or shutdown

2018-05-25 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
** Description changed:

- SCENARIO: I have just upgraded to 18.04 from 17.10
-
- PROBLEM PACKAGE (?): linux-modules-4.15.0-20-generic
+ After upgrading to 18.04 from 17.10, it now takes ~5 minutes to boot or
+ shutdown.

REPORT FROM 'dmesg' shows this typical error:
-
  [ 899.040146] [drm:drm_atomic_helper_wait_for_dependencies [drm_kms_helper]]
*ERROR* [CRTC:41:pipe B] flip_done timed out
  [ 909.280160] [drm:drm_atomic_helper_wait_for_dependencies [drm_kms_helper]]
*ERROR* [PLANE:35:plane B] flip_done timed out

- BASIC DETAILS:
- 'flip_done' timed out does not sound good to me! Is this the reason for the
extremely long boot time observed? Approximate boot time is 5 minutes! Long
delays on shutdown also.
-
- The new system works great once it is up and running! My laptop is 10
- years old (Comapaq Presario A900), but it has worked well with Ubuntu
- over the years and I was hoping that the 18.04 would have a *faster*
- boot time, so I was excited to install the new system. Alas, it now
- suffers from excessively long boot time which I am convinced is due to a
- timeout error. But I do not have enough knowledge to know exactly what
- exactly is 'timing out'? (Integrated graphics card possibly?)
-
- Graphics card details:
- Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (primary)
(rev 03)
-
- Thanks
+ WORKAROUND: Use kernel boot parameter:
+ video=SVIDEO-1:d

[Bug 1756202] Re: nmbd crashed with SIGABRT in dbghdrclass()

2018-05-25 Thread Pablo Pedrotti
I didn't notice that the crash signal was different. Everything in the
logs uploaded by OP looked the same as mine so I didn't upload mine. If
my bug is different from the one reported initially I'll open another
one and reupload everything there.

Re: [Bug 1767356] Re: Long boot time (approx 5 minuntes!), long shutdown

2018-05-25 Thread deeks9000
Hi Christopher,

I have tracked down my 'flip_done timed out' fault!

I noticed in my DMESG log that in the lines where 'flip_done timed out'
occurred with long delay periods of over 10 seconds, the error referred to
'SVIDEO-1'. A quick Google on that revealed that I am not alone and that
this is a known issue relating to old Intel graphics hardware:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/intel_graphics

http://distro.ibiblio.org/fatdog/web/faqs/intel-graphics.html

My Compaq Presario A900 is over 10 years old so I guess my integrated Intel
graphics chipset is not so well supported these days.

The remedy is to put 'video=SVIDEO-1:d' as part of my kernel boot
parameters via the grub bootloader options, in the file:
/etc/default/grub

## Updating the following text line to disable the S-VIDEO interface...
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash video=SVIDEO-1:d"

## Followed by...
sudo update-grub

My Ubuntu 18.04 is now quick to bootup and shutdown, and with no 'flip_done
timed out' errors! Yay!

I have tested this with both the current kernel 4.15.0 and the upstream
kernel 4.17.0 and all is OK.

Thank you very much for your help and guidance. I have learnt a little bit
more about Linux/Ubuntu during this exercise and have managed to vastly
speed up the boot time of my Ubuntu laptop in the process. It looks like
this bug was affecting me for many old kernels and I just hadn't noticed it!

I will make a note on the official bug report thread and close it off as
'solved'.

Kind regards,

Derick (deeks9000)

[Bug 1738259] Re: need to ensure microcode updates are available to all bare-metal installs of Ubuntu

2018-05-25 Thread Explorer09
Um, excuse me. When I check the updates on my Ubuntu Trusty machine, I
found out it now asks for new install of the amd64-microcode package.
May I ask why? My CPU is not AMD's but Intel's, and it seems that
amd64-microcode had no use for me. Why does the linux-image-generic
package hard depend on it?

This way when I have linux-image-generic just for wish for the kernel
update, a useless package is installed on me. I mean, wouldn't that be
better if linux-image-generic just "Recommends" the microcode package,
without "Depending" on it?
