[Bug 1784101] [NEW] Ubuntu partition fills automatically

2018-07-27 Thread winux
Public bug reported:

Hi

When I first updated Ubuntu 16.04.4, about 3 weeks ago, I found out being
rapidly short of disk memory on the partition, and then could not even make a
screenshot.
I went to the French forum and after a long search we found out that
"pcie_aspm" was responsible for that.

Actually it fills up very rapidly 2 logs (the 2 last ones on the following list)
*
 ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo du -ma --max-depth=1 /mnt/5 | sort -n

... I rebooted normally (no live key)
and after 5 mn I found out, from gparted, that my partition reached 37 Go,
close to its max 39 Go
The only way to shutdown was a long press on the Power button, otherwise it was
a continuing flow of error messages

A clever guy from the forum gave me the solution by adding "pcie_aspm" in the
grub
I changed, on the following file, "sudo nautilus /etc/default/grub"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
into
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash pcie_aspm=off"

And it works !!! my partition never exceed 7 Go
I wanted to notify you about this important point which blocked my PC and, from
the forum, I realized I was not the only one

Thanks for you action on future update

[Bug 1748565] Re: Kernel regularly logs: Bluetooth: hci0: last event is not cmd complete (0x0f)

2018-07-27 Thread cslotty
I.e. - most of the time, after having suspended my computer, it will not
connect to bluetooth and I have to reboot. So this bug _is_ about
Bluetooth failing. At least until after a reboot. You could say, it's
about "suspend" failing.

I'm not finding any kernel packages in bionic-proposed; maybe they were
released already?

I've installed and tested 4.15.0-29 from the normal repos; it has the same
null pointer dereference at address 8 issue.

  I reviewed that as well, as I was unaware of it because I was not the
package maintainer in Debian back then.

   Reviewing them, they all seem to be on old pre 3.x versions of the
application and all of the Debian bugs associated with them were closed
as resolved (which does not automatically update the tracker, it
appears...). (And note further that the current Debian version of the
package, 3.2.6-1, is in Debian Testing as well as in Debian Unstable).

  I will investigate what I need to do to be able the get that tracker
updated.

[Bug 1740143] Re: backport btrfs ssd mount option fix

2018-07-27 Thread Hans van Kranenburg
Hi, patch author here. You can ask BTRFS maintainers by mailing to the
linux-bt...@vger.kernel.org mailing list. Also, the patch author email
address is in the commit itself, for quick questions. :-)

I just stumbled across this ubuntu issue while being bored and reading
https://wiki.debian.org/Btrfs where it's linked.

If you're using btrfs, I would personally not recommend using a linux
4.4 kernel, but at least 4.9 and preferably 4.14. The btrfs project does
not really have enough resources to properly manage tracking and sorting
out fixes and updating older kernels than the latest LTS. The latest LTS
(4.14 now) has the highest chance of getting important fixes, for all
other versions it depends on the knowledge and decisions of the patch
author what happens. (By the way, this is also the reason Redhat dropped
btrfs support: if you don't really know what you're doing (which means
investing in having a bunch of serious btrfs developers in your team)
then trying to selectively backports things becomes a real mine field
quickly.)

Aside from that, the "has a negative impact on usability" is certainly
true, and including this change in kernels < 4.14 that are used by Joe
Average who wants to use btrfs is certainly useful.

Backporting this one is not risky, the change doesn't bite much. Apart
from the mount option behaviour change that's mentioned (which can
either be picked or ignored) the old code has pretty much been there
since 2008.

Disclaimer: I'm a Debian user, so I don't follow ubuntu kernels closely.

When looking at...
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/FAQ#Kernel.2FSupport.Ubuntu_Kernel_Support

...I would recommend btrfs users to just move to Ubuntu 18.x.

[Bug 1783597] Re: The disk-space-needed estimate doesn't account for the snaps

2018-07-27 Thread Brian Murray
Given that the snaps are located in /var/lib/snapd and we currently
allocate free space to download debs in /var/cache/apt/archives and that
it is a corner case for those to not be the same mount point it is
likely that the space allocated for /var/cache/apt/archives would be
enough free space. However, the release upgrader doesn't currently
clean up the download .debs at all let alone before installing the
snaps. So one solution would be to have the release upgrader clean up
after itself.

[Bug 1783850] Re: Cannot find display configuration

2018-07-27 Thread Tony Pursell
It seems I spoke too soon.

When I started the machine back up again today using 4.4.0-130, the bug
was back again.

It seems that when I restart, sometimes it will start without the error
message, then it will be back again if I restart again. Its quite
random.

Another thing I have noticed is that if I get the xorg error message, I
also lose the WiFi.

When starting wayland graphical applications (using Gtk+ 3.20) I get this
message:

xkbcommon: ERROR: Key "" added to modifier map for multiple modifiers;
Using Lock, ignoring Shift

When starting a x11 session I get this message:

So it looks like this layout is broken. I have no idea what. Can you please
give me a hint on the reason why this happens?

Upstream is at https://wiki.neo-layout.org/browser#linux/X/rules, but they

What desktop environment are you using?

Assuming you are using gnome shell, which layouts did you choose
exactly, and in what order? (You can see in the "Region & Language"
settings).

Did you change any settings in the "Tweak Tool" under "Typing"?

In X11 session, can you show the output of `setxkbmap -print`?

BTW, the keymap usually works fine even with such errors, so it is not
necessarily broken. Does it actually not work for you?

The latter comes from "assign_shift_left_action" in compat/misc, see the
comment there why it is required.

I think the proper way to get rid of this warning would be to specify
the action associated to a keysym directly, not involving any "Any"
patters in the compat, that is, instead of

interpret Any+Lock {
action= LockMods(modifiers=Lock);
};

interpret Any + Any {
action= SetMods(modifiers=modMapMods);
};

(in compat/basic), use

interpret Caps_Lock {
action= LockMods(modifiers=Lock);
};

interpret Shift_L {
action= SetMods(modifiers=Shift);
};
interpret Shift_R {
action= SetMods(modifiers=Shift);
};

This might break some xmodmap setups of those very conservative user
still using xmodmap...

> Error:Key added to map for multiple modifiers
>   Using Mod2, ignoring Mod4.
> Error:Key added to map for multiple modifiers
>   Using Mod3, ignoring Mod5.

The former comes from "modifier_mapping" in symbols/level5, the latter
from "lock" in the same file, or something similar. The purpose is
associate the virtual modifiers LevelFive and NumLock to a real
modifier, and this is done using keycodes HYPR and MDSW which are known
not to be produced by hardware.

A proper fix would be not to use virtual modifiers LevelFive and NumLock
(and LevelThree and AltGr) at all, and use real modifiers directly.
This would avoid the need of such hacks as the one in symbols/level5,
without any disadvantage.

However, the error messages state that the the modifiers are set up as
desired. From the practical perspective, therefore, there is no
pressing need for a change.

I'd also like to mention that my system was a clean 18.04 install.
Also, would it be beneficial if I added my system info somehow? If so,
is there a way to add the same type of info Doug added without
generating a whole new bug report with say "ubuntu-bug linux"??

2018-07-27 Thread Tim Bishop
An update, years later. Still broken on 16.04, but working on 18.04.

Linux pgtest1604 4.4.0-131-generic #157-Ubuntu SMP Thu Jul 12 15:51:36 UTC 2018
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Disappointing to see this issue received no attention on 16.04, but I
suppose there is at least a way forward now.

[Bug 1697800] Re: [regression] firefox dies with SIGILL on machines without SSE2

2018-07-27 Thread hackerb9
Nearly a year later, this is still an immediate problem. For people
finding this bug via Google, the only fix I've found that cares about
security is to use Debian GNU/Linux instead of Ubuntu and `apt install
firefox-esr`. This works because the stable (Stretch) version of Debian
uses Firefox-ESR 52.9.0 which was released last month
(https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/52.9.0/releasenotes/).

However, I notice that the next Extended Support Release of Firefox will
be based on version 60, and thus I presume will have the same SIGILL
problems due to an incorrect ABI if it is compiled in the same way as
the current Firefox. So Debian will not be a panacea.

I understand that time marches on, as do ABIs, but minor updates to an
Ubuntu LTS release should not add new requirements on the CPU
architecture.

[Bug 1456778] Re: default configuration for irc clients should use ssl servers

This bug was fixed in the package irssi - 1.1.1-1ubuntu1

---
irssi (1.1.1-1ubuntu1) devel; urgency=medium

  * Merge from Debian. Remaining changes:
- Refresh and re-enabled 20fix_ssl_proxy_hostname_check.
  - When we have a proxy setting, we expect the CN to match
the proxy hostname, not the server hostname.
- d/p/03firsttimer_text:
  + Adapt 03firsttimer_text so it tells you about
connecting to freenode and joining #ubuntu.
  * Changes no longer needed:
- d/p/90irc-ubuntu-com:
  + irc.ubuntu.com was a CNAME to irc.freenode.net, but this prevents us
from recommending and verifying TLS connections. (LP: #1456778)

irssi (1.1.1-1) unstable; urgency=medium

  [ Rhonda D'Vine ]
  * New upstream release.
  * Uploaded from mIRC.
  * Adjust 03firsttimer_text patch for new location of the text.
  * Update copyright format URL to use https.
  * Install example scripts.
  * Bump Standards-Version to 4.1.4.
  * Move repository to salsa, update Vcs-* URLs.

  [ Unit 193 ]
  * Use https for upstream homepage.
  * /connect OFTC instead of irc.debian.org to get an ssl connection.

[Bug 1784065] Re: package libglib2.0-0 2.48.2-0ubuntu3 failed to install/upgrade: triggers ci file contains unknown directive `interest-await'

2018-07-27 Thread Brian Murray
This bug report is actually about an upgrade from Ubuntu 14.04 to Ubuntu
16.04 where dpkg is being upgraded from 1.17.5ubuntu5.8. That version of
dpkg does not have support for the "-await" alias variants and dpkg was
updated after libglib2.0-0 so that package upgrade failed. This is
fallout of the changes in bug 1780996. The fix is to make the packages
changed in bug 1780996 pre-depend on dpkg greater than or equal to
1.17.21.

It is also worth investigating the archive for other packages in Ubuntu
16.04 that use "-await" but do not pre-depend on dpkg.

[Bug 1784065] Re: package libglib2.0-0 2.48.2-0ubuntu3 failed to install/upgrade: triggers ci file contains unknown directive `interest-await'

2018-07-27 Thread Steve Langasek
Unreproducible here in a xenial chroot w/ same versions of dpkg and
libglib2.0-0. The format of the triggers file looks correct. Yan, is
this problem reproducible if you run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a && sudo
apt -f install && sudo apt install libglib2.0-0' in a terminal?
Otherwise, my guess is that this a rogue bitflip error rather than a bug
in libglib2.0-0.

See also

which points to LP: #500042.
