[Bug 1709155] Re: Better error message for unsupported kernel

2018-08-05 Thread Axel
Hmm... I see.

So the misbehavior I see does not fit this bug, because this bug does
not deal with the root-cause but with just an error message, a
consequence of it.

I've used in the past year always the newest kernels with my Ubuntu
installations. They have their hickups here and there but I did never
see this behavior. Snaps always worked with the newest kernels.

Doesn't a bug-tracker like launchpad exist to collect the misbehavior of
software, here especially Ubuntu?

What do you suggest for this case. Shall I open a new bug for the fact that
snaps do not work with the new kernels?

I also have the same issue on a Razer Blade 2017 - 7500U model. My
system has the exact same drive in it. I have just installed the
4.18.0-3 kernel linked above and will post here if I run into the issue
again.

Re: [Bug 1783001] Re: Ubuntu can't be installed alongside Linux Mint

2018-08-05 Thread Asztalos Sándor
Thanks for your help, mean time I did a few installations and I choose the
install on the entire disc and after I create 2 more partitions and the
next installation went nicely😎
Now I hawe LinMint 18 / Ubuntu 16 / LinMint 19 on the same HDD and it's OK
I'm happy with this...
The next stage is to install a wirtual machine ... I hope it will be
easier..☺

Thanks again for the hint.

Best Regards

Sandor

[Bug 1709818] Re: Failed to lock byte 100

2018-08-05 Thread  Christian Ehrhardt 
Hi kvaps, what you reported is a particular discussion on the handling of
snapshots.
The bug here was the general introduction of image locking that caused some
issues in formerly working cases.

The patch you referred to never made it upstream and that indicates that there
was either another solution or it was found that it is actually a config/setup
issue.
In fact I have neither found a similar change/title since then in git.

Would you mind filing this as a new Launchpad bug to keep the discussion
separate.
There I'd be happy if you could outline steps to reproduce the issue with
snapshot usage that formerly worked.

If you happen to find how the discussion continued in another thread
please add it there too.

[Bug 1785550] [NEW] Huge memory usage when changing background

2018-08-05 Thread Taddeo Manzi
Public bug reported:

When I open "change background" window in Settings, RAM usage of
gnome-control-center goes over 2 gb. In practice I can't change background

In general, system will freeze without return every time a program fills the

[Bug 1785376] Re: Build-Depends on nettle-dev >=3.1

2018-08-05 Thread  Christian Ehrhardt 
Upstream version 2.79 has this in the changelog:

+ Tidy up Crypto code, removing workarounds for ancient
+ versions of libnettle. We now require libnettle 3.

Not sure this is backportable to Trusty's nettle on 2.7.1-1ubuntu0.2
without taking back the upstream changes.

To get you correctly, you report that the build dependency currently being
 nettle-dev (>=2.4-3)
should be like
 nettle-dev (>=3.1-1)
right?

I agree, when 2.79 was merged which implies these dependencies that
should have been bumped.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

This bug is present in Debian too, and Ubuntu currently doesn't make any
changes over the Debian package. So this bug would be best fixed
directly in Debian, and then Ubuntu will pick up the fix automatically.

Would you mind filing a bug with Debian please?
I think given the low severity it is fine to fix it just there and we pick it
up automatically.
If you do so I'd be glad if you could report back the generated bug number to
track the handling there.

[Bug 1785548] [NEW] GRUB countdown does not begin until key press

2018-08-05 Thread Daniel Richard G.
Public bug reported:

This concerns grub-pc 2.02-2ubuntu8.2 in Ubuntu 18.04/bionic.

I have GRUB configured to do a five-second countdown (no menu) on boot:

GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=countdown
GRUB_TIMEOUT=5

Strangely enough, on a "Dell Precision Workstation" PC that I have here,
the "5" appears on boot but does not begin counting down until I press a
key. If I don't do anything, the countdown remains stuck. Other systems
I have tested on do not show this behavior.

Obviously, this could be a real problem for a system that does not have
convenient console access.

That implies that for you it is some other config than the current
kernel (or a combination thereof), so far multiple people including me
have not been able to reproduce this - so to further fix things we have
to spot what is different within your setup triggering the issue for
you.

Unfortunately we have checked the obvious (32bit host) with varying
results comment #19 and comment #24. So it must be something else than
"just" the kernel, but what?

[Bug 1785499] Re: Make squashfs-tools in Xenial in sync with Bionic and Cosmic

2018-08-05 Thread Stéphane Graber
== fix 2GB limit in mksquashfs ==
=== Rationale ===
I don't have a direct use for this patch, but it seemed simpler and easier to
just sync the entire stack of bugfixes with what we have in bionic and cosmic,
so including this one too.

This fixes the case where a user attempts to append to a squashfs larger that's
larger than 2GB.

=== Test case ===
Generate a large squashfs, easiest to achieve it is to turn off most
compression options and feed it a large random file. Size should exceed 2GB.

Run mksquashfs with some random extra data to append and the pre-
generated big squashfs.

Prior to this fix, you should get a failure like "Lseek on destination
failed: Invalid argument".

With the fix applied, mksquashfs should just append the data and the
resulting squashfs should be mountable and contain the new data.

=== Regression potential ===
This is another very small patch that looks "obviously correct" in that
squashfs was simply overflowing an int in this case. The fix switches the type
to "off_t" avoiding this issue.

The same fix has been in Ubuntu and Debian for a while so has seen a
good amount of exposure.

[Bug 1785499] Re: Make squashfs-tools in Xenial in sync with Bionic and Cosmic

2018-08-05 Thread Stéphane Graber
== preserve file capabilities ==
=== Rationale ===
Filesystem capabilities aren't properly restored during unsquashfs, this
effectively prevents any LXD image from containing file capabilities and breaks
basic tools like mtr in recent images.

=== Testcase ===
For the fscaps part, easiest is to grab the latest cosmic cloud image from:

http://cloud-images.ubuntu.com/cosmic/current/cosmic-server-cloudimg-amd64.squashfs

Then unsquashfs as root and check if "/usr/bin/mtr-packet" shows a
capability when running "getcap".

=== Regression potential ===
Minimal, we're syncing to the exact same source and patches as we've got in
bionic and cosmic, the patch is also trivial and "obviously right". The issue
is that the kernel will strip capabilities during chown() and unsquashfs was
restoring capabilities before calling chown. This patch simply re-orders it so
that capabilities are applied after ownership.

[Bug 1785544] [NEW] package trousers 0.3.14+fixed1-1build1 failed to install/upgrade: installed trousers package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 1

2018-08-05 Thread Daniel Axtens
Public bug reported:

Hi,

I installed trousers on my Dell XPS 13, and the following error
occurred:

Aug 06 12:03:45 linkitivity trousers[11173]:  * Starting Trusted Computing
daemon tcsd
Aug 06 12:03:45 linkitivity trousers[11173]: /etc/init.d/trousers: 32: [:

Aug 06 12:03:45 linkitivity trousers[11173]: * TPM device owner for
/dev/tpmrm0 is not 'tss', this can cause problems.
Aug 06 12:03:45 linkitivity tcsd[11196]: TCSD TDDL[11196]: TrouSerS ioctl: (25)

Aug 06 12:03:45 linkitivity tcsd[11196]: TCSD TDDL[11196]: TrouSerS Falling
back to Read/Write device support.
Aug 06 12:03:45 linkitivity tcsd[11196]: TCSD TCS[11196]: TrouSerS ERROR: TCS
GetCapability failed with result = 0x1e
Aug 06 12:03:45 linkitivity trousers[11173]:...fail!
Aug 06 12:03:45 linkitivity systemd[1]: trousers.service: Control process
exited, code=exited status=30
Aug 06 12:03:45 linkitivity systemd[1]: trousers.service: Failed with result
'exit-code'.
Aug 06 12:03:45 linkitivity systemd[1]: Failed to start LSB: starts tcsd.

The first problem in /etc/init.d/trousers is:

if [ ! -e /dev/tpm* ]
then
log_warning_msg "device driver not loaded, skipping."
exit 0
fi

I have two devices that match /dev/tpm*: /dev/tpm0 and /dev/tpmrm0, and
[ -e only works with one input. This doesn't cause the warning to fire,
so it's purely a cosmetic warning.

The second warning seems to related to the ownership of /dev/tpmrm0:

# ls -l /dev/tpm*
crw--- 1 tss  tss   10,   224 Aug  6 12:03 /dev/tpm0
crw--- 1 root root 253, 65536 Jul 27 19:50 /dev/tpmrm0

So it looks like /dev/tpm0 is set correctly but not /dev/tpmrm0.

Looking at the source, it seems that debian/trousers.udev contains only
the following:

KERNEL=="tpm[0-9]*", MODE="0600", OWNER="tss", GROUP="tss"

I think per some reading online it needs to read something like this:

KERNEL=="tpmrm[0-9]*|tpm[0-9]*", MODE="0660", OWNER="tss", GROUP="tss"

Editing /lib/udev/rules.d/45-trousers.rules to include this line and
running `udevadm trigger` makes the warning go away.

Finally, the whole thing fails with "ERROR: TCS GetCapability failed
with result = 0x1e". This is apparently due to the presence of a TPM2
chip rather than the 1.2 chip that trousers understands.

I think trousers should print a loud warning in this case (and
preferably a much more informative one!) but that it should not fail to
configure the package.

[Bug 1785457] Re: Getting problems while apt-get upgrading as well

2018-08-05 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read "How to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures.

At a minimum, we need:
1. The specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem.
2. The behavior you expected.
3. The behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 1782802] Re: ditch ipconfig in favor of dhclient -4 in 18.10

2018-08-05 Thread Michael Hudson-Doyle
I'm not sure I see a path to switching away from klibc-utils completely.
As far as I can tell, every upload of initramfs-tools ever has still
invoked ipconfig for some arguments.

Most configs can be handled by writing some shell to replace what
ipconfig does and some functionality can probably be dropped but doing
all of it doesn't sound like a lot of fun.

It would be fairly easy to invoke dhclient for the common case of a
simple dhcp request, but would it be worth it?

[Bug 1785537] [NEW] Opening video from compressed archive can freeze X

2018-08-05 Thread dbclinton
Public bug reported:

Perhaps I shouldn't do this, but I often open compressed videos using Totem
from within Archive Manager. A couple of times over the past month my desktop
session has frozen as Totem loads. The mouse still moves, but it can't interact
with screen objects. The keyboard doesn't work at all.
I'm able to SSH remotely into my machine and killing the Totem process restores
full desktop access.

a TTY (which I can access with ctrl-alt-F5 or similar), seems to gently
restart gnome-shell and give me everything back with my applications all
still running:

dbus-send --type=method_call --print-reply --dest=org.gnome.Shell
/org/gnome/Shell org.gnome.Shell.Eval string:'global.reexec_self()'

[Bug 1785536] [NEW] Dual boot Ubuntu Windows not Starting after Shut down

2018-08-05 Thread Pankaj Yewale
Public bug reported:

Hi,
I have a DELL Inspiron 15 7000 series 7548.
I have always used a dual boot system with Ubuntu 16.04 and Windows Os. It
works perfectly fine except for the last few weeks when I started to encounter
a following weird issue:

So, whenever I SHUT DOWN my laptop it struggles to start back on again. I can
see the power light on, charging light on (if plugged) and can also hear the
fan running but it does not show any boot options or does not respond to
function keys, nothing. I even tried removing the battery for few minutes,
removed the plug to discharge any static current just for the sake of it, but
it still wont boot up.
However, after a few random attempts to POWER ON (usually takes hours) it boots
back up normally and functions properly.
The laptop restarts properly, displays all the boot options and works perfectly
normal otherwise.

The problem is just when you SHUT DOWN and try to power it back ON

As of now my Laptop is working fine, but I don't want to fall back in
that weird scenario when I have to shut it down or the battery runs out
of power.

I have attached a boot info file generated from a boot repair software
app for ubuntu.

Need assistance as soon as possible.
Thanks

[Bug 1770587] Re: creation of new email account impossible in thunderbird

2018-08-05 Thread gf
Hi again Jean Max.
I was looking for duplicates on this issue among the other bugs.
I found a promising one, on the Mozilla bug tracker website:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/thunderbird/+bug/1770587

Will you read it through and see if it matches your situation?

At the end, a bug triager named Eckard suggests that it is because of an
option that is checked in preferences.

Will you try checking the options box and see if that solves your
problem?

Thanks
G

16.06 xenial show same error with mkntfs:

mkntfs: error while loading shared libraries: libntfs-3g.so.85: cannot

Shared object installed in /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/ by the ntfs-3g (2015)
package are:

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 21 2017-01-28 17:54

Adding a link from libntfs-3g.so.85 to libntfs-3g.so.861.0.0

generate an incompatible SO version. So the Ubuntu package is built with
wrong settings

[Bug 1768230] Re: Long time booting : Failed to connect to lvmetad. Falling back to device scanning.

2018-08-05 Thread Giancarlo via ubuntu-bugs
I tried today Aug 5, 2018 to upgrade from 16.04 to 18.04. I have been using
16.04 in this machine for the last 10 months without any issues. Installed from
LiveCD. I did the upgrade not the LiveCD. It went through the entire
upgrade/installation without any issues. It finished and asked to reboot. After
it rebooted and after the Dell logo the screen went blank and I could see text
popping up on the top left corner of the display, disappearing, popping up
again. This repeats every 2-3 seconds. The message is
"Gave up waiting for suspend/resume device
/dev/sda2/: clean, 213855/14712832 files, 3013745/58847488 blocks". This
message keeps appearing continuously. Did not wait 30 seconds to see if it
rebooted (my fault for not being patient). I tried the 16.04 LiveCD to try to
fix. Changed the conf.d resume to RESUME=none as suggested by someone, did not
work. So had to do a clean re-install of 16.04 again.
My machine is a Dell Inspiron 15 5000 series with Intel Core i5 8th Gen.

[Bug 1734817] Re: keyboard: alt-F doesn't open File menu

2018-08-05 Thread John Pye
I re-checked, indeed on my system, the ALT+F doesn't work for me. This
is on Bionic 18.04 LTS, which I hope to stick with for some time.

If there is a fix for the problem of missing first-mnemonic actions,
then I hope it can be backported! That seems the be the main theme here,
with the issues of Pluma and Terminal as secondary issues.

[Bug 1762952] Re: Alternative shortcut for layout switching Alt+Shift unexpectedly set by default

2018-08-05 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
I went through step 1 -3 in the test case in the bug description, thus
upgraded to version 1.178ubuntu2.4 of keyboard-configuraion, console-
setup and console-setup-linux from bionic-proposed. The result:

$ cat /etc/default/keyboard
XKBLAYOUT="se,us"
BACKSPACE="guess"
XKBVARIANT=","
XKBMODEL="pc105"
XKBOPTIONS="grp:alt_shift_toggle,grp_led:scroll"

So keyboard-configuration still enforces grp:alt_shift_toggle to be
written to /etc/default/keyboard.

If I change /etc/default/keyboard before the upgrade to only include one
layout - in my case XKBLAYOUT=se - no XKBOPTIONS are added. But that's
the behavior before the proposed change too.

So unfortunately the proposed change seems to not address the issue
reported in this bug.
