[Bug 1752411] Re: bind9-host, avahi-daemon-check-dns.sh hang forever causes network connections to get stuck

2018-08-20 Thread  Christian Ehrhardt 
I agree strongswan/openconnect (and maybe more) are affected by the
symptom, while the bug lies in bind9-host/avahi packages at least
according to current debugging.

>From my experience I guess what would be great to get more traction on this is
>to get a shorter reproducer than setting up some sort of VPN.
To me it seems several people involved here had those steps to work on it, but
no one pasted them clearly here.
So if anybody can provide that please feel free to add them here.

@Trent - you worked on a mitigation of this at least in avahi daemon and
currently the status of this bug IMHO is waiting on you to update for the
review feedback provided by rbasak in comment #25.
Could you do that or are you having to drop your work on it so that somebody
else should take it over?

[Bug 1745114] Re: Please add guest uuid and guest-generic local include files

2018-08-20 Thread  Christian Ehrhardt 
I summarized it in another bug nicely (I think), quoting it here to be
on the main bug as well:

This had two phases with both having had their own issues:

Phase I: ~2013-2016: the libvirt- stayed around and could be used for
such overrides, but they cluttered the file system and overview was lost,
therefore a cron daemon was established to clean files of currently undefined
domains (which still could kill overrides that people wanted to stay).
Override: Was too unreliable to rely on it

Phase II: 2017-now the cleaning became part of libvirt itself due to [1]. This
will immediately remove the file and unload profiles, keeping the config dir
clean but even removed unreliable override capability we had.
Override: doesn't work at all

Phase III: future as planned in this bug.
It is intended to use the new "include if available" feature of apparmor to
allow providing non-cleaned overrides to just those guests that you want/need.
That would mean on most installations there would be no extra config clutter at
all.
On others where it is needed they can be used for overrides.

[Bug 1788034] Re: no way to preserve per-domain apparmor profile modifications across reboot

2018-08-20 Thread  Christian Ehrhardt 
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1745114 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1745114

Yeah this had two phases with both having had their own issues, I'm
already working on this at a lower priority.

Phase II: future as planned in bug 1745114. I already identified the need for
per-guest overrides, but at the same time there is a reason upstream as well as
my predecessor cleaned up these files. I have intended to use the new "include
if available" feature of apparmor to allow providing non-cleaned overrides to
just those that you want.
That would mean on most installations there would be no extra config clutter at
all.
On others where it is needed they can be used for overrides.

I'm marking it a dup of the bug I work on anyway. Lets hope apparmor
gets the code we need in 19.04

[Bug 1745114] Re: Please add guest uuid and guest-generic local include files

2018-08-20 Thread  Christian Ehrhardt 
As I assumed the old (cron) and new (virt-aa-helper call) cleanup code makes
the libvirt- files unusable.
Also all old approaches wanted to avoid cluttering /etc/apparmor.d/libvirt/* to
not loose overview.
Best (not fastest, but best) solution would really the "include if avail" once
available in apparmor.

That would provide clean config dirs for those who do not use it while at the
same time allowing per guest overrides for those who need it.
Also from there people could even make groups like
libvirt-
  include if -> libvirt-local-

libvirt-local- (a set of UUIDs would do that)
  include allow-my-special-conf-A

allow-my-special-conf-A
  rule for A

[Bug 1771988] Re: certificate validation with IP address based SAN's fails

2018-08-20 Thread James Page
Marking Newton task as Invalid as urllib3 does not form part of that UCA
pocket (uses version from Xenial).

** Changed in: cloud-archive/mitaka
   Status: Triaged => In Progress

** Changed in: cloud-archive/mitaka
Assignee: (unassigned) => James Page (james-page)

** Description changed:

  [Impact]
Users of urllib3 are unable to securely access websites who's certificates
use IP based subject alternative names; this includes openstack client tooling
which uses urllib3 via requests.

  [Test Case]
Deploy and configure a server with TLS and an IP based SAN cert with a
locally trusted CA.

  import urllib3
-
+
  http = urllib3.PoolManager()
  r = http.request('GET', 'https://192.168.1.2')

  will fail
-

  [Regression Potential]
Cherry picked fix comes from a later urllib3 release which has tested fine
for IP SAN usage in later OpenStack release deployments.

  [Original Bug Report]
urllib3 fails to validate certificates with IP address based SAN's.

  Fixed upstream:

https://github.com/urllib3/urllib3/commit/c74bd70c3a97e30f0560bee9b7fa1bfc767ebf0b

** Changed in: cloud-archive/newton

[Bug 1788103] [NEW] [SRU] openvswitch 2.5.5

2018-08-20 Thread James Page
Public bug reported:

[Impact]
This release sports mostly bug-fixes and we would like to make sure all of our
supported customers have access to these improvements.

The update contains the following package updates:

   * openvswitch 2.5.5

[Test Case]
The following SRU process was followed:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/OpenStackUpdates

In order to avoid regression of existing consumers, the OpenStack team will
run their continuous integration test against the packages that are in
-proposed. A successful run of all available tests will be required before the
proposed packages can be let into -updates.

The OpenStack team will be in charge of attaching the output summary of the
executed tests. The OpenStack team members will not mark ‘verification-done’
until
this has happened.

[Regression Potential]
In order to mitigate the regression potential, the results of the
aforementioned tests are attached to this bug.

[Bug 1781526] Re: Ubuntu18.04 - qemu patch to align memory to allow 2MB THP

2018-08-20 Thread  Christian Ehrhardt 
New Problem, new Bug - at least since the current one is already closed in
Cosmic.
Fortunately the SRU itself was still on hold waiting for another PPC fix to
complete to bundle them so we can make this part of it still.

I forked bug 1788098 for it.

Please set that for reverse bug mirroring to track it.

Furthermore you could help there by adding the most simple steps to reproduce.
I assume doing migration on ppc64el with some memory dirty workload plus mem
verification would do?
But exact steps would help for sure.

[Bug 1788098] Re: Avoid migration issues with aligned 2MB THB

2018-08-20 Thread  Christian Ehrhardt 
Oh, I just realized while initially reported against qemu in bug 1781526
that this is a kernel, and not a qemu patch.

That spreads the timeline a bit:
- this should be in Cosmic before Release to avoid issues due to the fix of
1781526.
  - since that is kind of short I'll bump priority there.
- This has to be in Bionic before a fix for bug 1781526 (I'll wait with a qemu
change until this one is complete)

I'm marking the qemu task invalid (no action there other than to track
the Bionic release of this which will finally unblock the SRU of bug
1781526 to Bionic).

I'm adding a kernel task to reflect that this is a kernel change that is needed.
Finally I'm adding a Cosmic and Bionic Task.

[Bug 1788098] [NEW] Avoid migration issues with aligned 2MB THB

2018-08-20 Thread  Christian Ehrhardt 
Public bug reported:

--- Comment From jhop...@us.ibm.com 2018-08-20 17:12 EDT---
Hi, in some environments it was observed that this qemu patch to enable THP
made it more likely to hit guest migration issues, however the following kernel
patch resolves those migration issues:

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/paulus/powerpc.git/commit/?h=kvm-ppc-next&id=c066fafc595eef5ae3c83ae3a8305956b8c3ef15
KVM: PPC: Book3S HV: Use correct pagesize in kvm_unmap_radix()

Once merged upstream, it would be good to include that change as well to
avoid potential migration problems. Should I open a new bug for that or
is it better to track here?

Note Paelzer: I have not seen related migration issues myself, but it
seems reasonable and confirmed by IBM.

[Bug 1766648] Re: baloo_file crashes after some time in Ubuntu Bionic

2018-08-20 Thread John Little
My crash has been avoided for now by deleting the index:

rm ~/.local/share/baloo/*

Reinstating those files from a snapshot three days ago, and resetting
"first run=true", reinstates the crash. The index is 9 MiB, I could
make it available if that would be useful.

So, a workaround for the crash may be to delete the index files, set
first run=true in .config/baloofilerc, and restart baloo with balooctl
start.

[Bug 1788097] [NEW] performance drop with ATS enabled

2018-08-20 Thread bugproxy
Public bug reported:

== Comment: #0 - Michael Ranweiler  - 2018-08-16
09:58:02 ==

Witherspoon cluster now has ATS enabled with driver 396.42, CUDA version
9.2.148. They are running the CORAL benchmark LULESH with and without
ATS, and they see a significant performance drop with ATS enabled.

Below is the run with ATS:

Run completed:
Problem size = 160
MPI tasks = 8
Iteration count = 100
Final Origin Energy = 1.605234e+09
Testing Plane 0 of Energy Array on rank 0:
MaxAbsDiff = 2.384186e-07
TotalAbsDiff = 5.300015e-07
MaxRelDiff = 1.631916e-12

Elapsed time = 153.00 (s)
Grind time (us/z/c) = 0.37352393 (per dom) (0.046690491 overall)
FOM = 21417.637 (z/s)

Here is the run without ATS:
Run completed:
Problem size = 160
MPI tasks = 8
Iteration count = 100
Final Origin Energy = 1.605234e+09
Testing Plane 0 of Energy Array on rank 0:
MaxAbsDiff = 2.384186e-07
TotalAbsDiff = 5.300015e-07
MaxRelDiff = 1.631916e-12

Elapsed time = 13.27 (s)
Grind time (us/z/c) = 0.032394027 (per dom) (0.0040492534 overall)
FOM = 246959.11 (z/s)

Using ATS on a single node slows down the OpenACC version more than 10
times, and for the version with OpenMP 4.5 and managed memory, they
observe a 2x slowdown.

Last comment from NVIDIA (Javier Cabezas - 07/29/2018 11:30 AM):
We think we have found where's the issue.

This behavior reproduces for any two concurrent processes that create
CUDA contexts on the GPUs and heavily unmap memory (no need to launch
any work on the GPUs). When the problem repros, perf shows that most of
the time is spent in mmio_invalidate. However, this only happens when
processes register GPUs attached to the same NPU. Thus, if process A,
initializes GPU 0 and/or 1, and process B, initializes GPU 2 and/or 3,
we don't see the slowdown. This makes sense, because ATSDs on different
NPUs are issued independently.

After some code inspection in npu-dma.c (powerpc backend in the Linux
kernel), Mark noticed that the problem could be in the utilization of
test_and_set_bit_lock in get_mmio_atsd_reg. The implementation of
test_and_set_bit_lock in powerpc relies on the ldarx/stdcx instructions
(PPC_LLARX/PPC_STLCX in the snippet below):

#define DEFINE_TESTOP(fn, op, prefix, postfix, eh)\
static __inline__ unsigned long fn( \
unsigned long mask, \
volatile unsigned long *_p) \
{ \
unsigned long old, t; \
unsigned long *p = (unsigned long *)_p; \
__asm__ __volatile__ (\
prefix\
"1:"PPC_LLARX(%0,0,%3,eh) "\n"\
stringify_in_c(op) "%1,%0,%2\n" \
PPC405_ERR77(0,%3)\
PPC_STLCX "%1,0,%3\n" \
"bne- 1b\n" \
postfix \
: "=&r" (old), "=&r" (t) \
: "r" (mask), "r" (p) \
: "cc", "memory");\
return (old & mask);  \
}

According to the PowerPC manual, ldarx creates a memory reservation and
a subsequent stwcx instruction from the same processor ensures an atomic
read-modify-write operation. However, the reservation can be lost if a
different processor executes any store instruction on the same address.
That's why "bne- 1b" checks wether stwcx was successful and jumps back
to retry, otherwise. Since DEFINE_TESTOP doesn't implement any back-off
mechanism, two different processors trying to get an ATSD register can
starve each other.

Mark compiled a custom kernel which surrounds the calls to
test_and_set_bit_lock in get_mmio_atsd_reg with a spinlock and I
verified that it solves the issue. These are the execution times for
LULESH:

ATS OFF
Elapsed time = 16.87 (s)

ATS ON
Elapsed time = 215.56 (s)

ATS ON + Spinlock
Elapsed time = 18.14 (s)

Fixed with the following patch in the powerpc tree:
https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/powerpc/linux.git/commit/?id=9eab9901b015

[Bug 1767322] Re: "Activation of network connection failed" popup shows incessantly

2018-08-20 Thread Chris Burgess
I am seeing this issue as well.

I have two networks that are both configured to join a VPN, and when
both networks (wifi and wired) are activated simultaneously, I see a
message:

Aug 21 15:45:58 example NetworkManager[1196]:
[1534823158.7630] policy: secondary connection 'Example
(12345678-1234-1234-1234-1234567890ab)' auto-activation failed: (6)
Connection 'Example' is already active

So - the fix for me is to disable (manually, currently) the wifi when my
laptop is docked; this seems to allow the VPN to connect on the (sole
remaining) network connection.

Posting in the hope this might help others, and to follow along with
this issue :)

Maybe your system is set to automatically change wallpaper every 10

No, nothing is obviously broken, at least to me, but something isn't
right. However it's an annoyance to have my syslog filled up with these
being written every 10 minutes.

[Bug 1787976] Re: a

2018-08-20 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read "How to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures.

At a minimum, we need:
1. The specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem.
2. The behavior you expected.
3. The behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 1788083] [NEW] Kleopatra won't let me set imported private key as "mine"

2018-08-20 Thread Christopher Snowhill
Public bug reported:

The "Change certification trust" option is grayed out for the OpenPGP
key I imported from an encrypted export from another system. It may also
be listing it as "not certified" because one of the User-IDs assigned to
it has been revoked, because I discarded that domain.

Description:Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS
Release:18.04

kleopatra:
  Installed: 4:17.12.3-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 4:17.12.3-0ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 4:17.12.3-0ubuntu1 500
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu bionic/universe amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

I expect it to allow me to certify the key as my own private key.

The certification option is grayed out only for that certificate.

[Bug 1788081] Re: Cannot connect to "shared" ipv4 network ("Error: Connection activation failed: IP configuration could not be reserved (no available address, timeout, etc.)"

2018-08-20 Thread Tyler Johnson via ubuntu-bugs
** Description changed:

I have a connection profile which is supposed to allow my computers to
- talk to eachother over an ad-hoc eithernet connection. For me, this is
+ talk to eachother over an ad-hoc ethernet connection. For me, this is
mostly useful for when I need to transfer large files over from one
computer to another (the only network I have is WiFi, and it's painfully
slow). So, If I need to transfer files from machine A to machine B, I
- just use an eithernet cable. Easy-peasy.
+ just use an ethernet cable. Easy-peasy.

However, after upgrading one of my machines from Ubuntu 16.04 to 18.04,
I find that said machine can no longer create such a network. If I try
to active the profile graphically using nm-applet, it fails without
displaying any error messages. However, If I try to activate it from the
command line with "nmcli con up id Wired\ Connection\ 2", it fails with
  the following message:

Error: Connection activation failed: IP configuration could not be
reserved (no available address, timeout, etc.)

While typing this bug report, I ran the "ubuntu-bug network-manager"
command, and will post the results below. If there's anything else I can
do (I can't read/write code very well, but I can test code, and get any
additional information, so long as I'm given clear instructions on how
to do so), please let me know.

[Bug 1788084] [NEW] Flatpack apps from software center not mounted after reboot

2018-08-20 Thread Alex
Public bug reported:

Fresh ubuntu 18.04.1 install from USB image. Booted to live desktop and
installed onto whole disk. After installation, rebooted into desktop.
None of the three apps I installed (spotify, slack, discord) were
visible in applications menu. Ran 'mount' from terminal, none were
visible. After a subsequent reboot they were mounted correctly. I had
already installed spotify from the .deb available on their site, so
after rebooting my apps menu has two versions of spotify.

[Bug 1788081] Re: Cannot connect to "shared" ipv4 network ("Error: Connection activation failed: IP configuration could not be reserved (no available address, timeout, etc.)"

2018-08-20 Thread Tyler Johnson via ubuntu-bugs
BTW, I forgot to mention a few things:

I haven't had this issue with Arch GNU/Linux, so I'm guessing this is
NOT an upstream issue. Then again, I haven't tried doing this on Arch in
quite a while, and I don't think I can attempt it now because the
computer in question is having some hard drive issues. I'll test once
said issues are fixed.

I also forgot to add that - as far as I know - this bug only affects
18.04. THis bug doesn't seem to affect 16.04, nor does this bug affect
Debian Squeeze.

Also, I'm running the x86_64 version of Ubuntu.

lshw lists my ethernet hardware as "82577LM Gigabit Network Connection",
manufactured by "Intel Corporation". The driver is "e1000e", revision
"3.2.6-k", firmware "0.12-1".

It appears you have an Intel GPU attached to a:

   Intel(R) Core(TM) i3 CPU M 380 @ 2.53GHz

Can you please explain what's going wrong? What do you see? What do you
expect to work that doesn't?

Some photos or a screenshot would help.

[Bug 1787925] Re: gnome-shell crashed with SIGABRT in meta_bug()

2018-08-20 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To
help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

3. If step 2 also failed then apply the workaround from bug 994921,
reboot, reproduce the crash, and retry step 1.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.
