[Bug 1784501] Re: libvirtd is unable to configure bridge devices inside of LXD containers

2018-08-23 Thread Tyler Hicks
@mpontillo would you mind testing with the libvirt that's in the release
pocket of Bionic?

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libvirt/4.0.0-1ubuntu8

That would help tell us if libvirt has had an SRU that changed this
behavior in the short time that Bionic has been released.

[Bug 1752411] Re: bind9-host, avahi-daemon-check-dns.sh hang forever causes network connections to get stuck

2018-08-23 Thread Trent Lloyd
> When host call fails (even with timeout), it returns "1" claiming
"dns_has_local()=true".

0 = true, 1 = false (you implied the opposite)

What may add confusion here is the grep -vq check is like an extra check
to make sure host didn't return 0 (success = we found .local) but then
say 'not found' anyway. So it returns 0 (true) when host returns 0. It
returns 1 when host returns anything else (including timeout); 1 = false
which means leave avahi enabled.

[Bug 1788788] [NEW] compton.desktop should be modified or removed

2018-08-23 Thread Histesh Shah
Public bug reported:

Tested on Lubuntu 18.04 and Lubuntu 18.10:
Install compton-conf in Lubuntu 18.04. It is present by default in Lubuntu
18.10.

The entry in Menu > Accessories is "compton". Clicking on it does
nothing.

The corresponding .desktop file in /usr/share/applications is compton.desktop
with
TryExec=compton
Exec-compton

The entry in Menu > Preferences > Window Effects works: A GUI for
setting compton options appears.

The corresponding .desktop file in /usr/share/applications is
compton-conf.desktop with
TryExec=compton.conf
Exec-compton-conf

Although this MANDATORY_FILE_LOCKING is considered to be a "very common

say switch it on for sure).

[Bug 1788603] Re: libvirt fails with failure to open mount namespace

Tested, confirmed wrapped in a libvirt upstream patch and submitted at
https://www.redhat.com/archives/libvir-list/2018-August/msg01532.html

Lets give the people a few days to read and ack as well then we can push
it to cosmic.

It came to my mind that due to HWE-Kernels we eventually also want this in
Bionic.
So lets add a task right away to not forget.

[Bug 1788544] Re: package mysql-server-5.7 5.7.23-0ubuntu0.18.04.1 failed to install/upgrade: installed mysql-server-5.7 package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 1

2018-08-23 Thread  Christian Ehrhardt 
Hi,
you seem to have all kinds of services already running, in your log I found:

Apache stumbling:
Aug 23 10:42:05 k-HP-EliteBook-8460p apachectl[7951]: (98)Address already in
use: AH00072: make_sock: could not bind to address [::]:80
Aug 23 10:42:05 k-HP-EliteBook-8460p apachectl[7951]: (98)Address already in
use: AH00072: make_sock: could not bind to address 0.0.0.0:80

And also mysql later:
2018-08-23T05:12:42.584400Z 0 [ERROR] Can't start server: Bind on TCP/IP port:
Address already in use
2018-08-23T05:12:42.584406Z 0 [ERROR] Do you already have another mysqld server
running on port: 3306 ?
2018-08-23T05:12:42.584423Z 0 [ERROR] Aborting

I can't derive from the logs what you had on these ports, but you'll need to
resolve that cleanly (uninstall or reconfigure the former processes to other
ports) or the new services won't start.
In general multiple webservers on different ports usually work, but multiple
mysql databases I want to encourage you to double check their data path to not
kill your DB content at some point.

2018-08-23 Thread  Christian Ehrhardt 
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

On upgrading a service this service has to be restarted to pick up the fixes.
Rather rarely a real issue occurs that the newer version does e.g. fail with
the formerly working configuration.
But most of the time what happens is, that a service was installed, but stays
unconfigured or experimented with but left in a broken state.

Now on any update of the related packages that service has to be restarted, but
since its config is incomplete/faulty it fails to restart.
Therefore the update of that package has to consider itself incomplete.

Depending on your particular case there are two solutions:
- either remove the offending package if you don't want to continue using it.
- Or if you do want to keep it please fix the configuration so that re-starting
the service will work.

Since it seems likely to me that this is a local configuration problem,
rather than a bug in Ubuntu, I'm marking this bug as Incomplete.

If indeed this is a local configuration problem, you can find pointers
to get help for this sort of problem here:
http://www.ubuntu.com/support/community

Or if you believe that this is really a bug, then you may find it
helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem,
explain why you believe this is a bug in Ubuntu rather than a problem
specific to your system, and then change the bug status back to New.

[Bug 1758548] Re: impossible to visualize: Book does not have a format available

2018-08-23 Thread freikland
Hello,

Yes, I confirm that the problem still occurs, but randomly.
Under Ubuntu 16.04 LTS up to date and Calibre 3.29 in any case.

I just upgraded Calibre version 3.30 at the moment, so I do not have
enough perspective for it.

Of course, I would like this concern to be solved, because when the phenomenon
occurs, the book concerned is simply removed from the library ...
Please excuse my ignorance, but can you explain to me where and how to do this:

"intake-collect 1758548
and upload the updated logs and any other documents that are relevant for this
particular issue."

Thank you in advance for your understanding.

Thanks Trent for the extra verification.
Tests also look good so far, but currently since a lot got uploaded due to
feature freeze some tests take a while.
We should have that in cosmic soon and then can pick the same for Bionic.

Thanks also for your thoughts on a better long term solution.

[Bug 1788672] Re: apt install virt-manager - does not work

2018-08-23 Thread  Christian Ehrhardt 
Thanks Hans for the pre-triage!

@Lukas - I have seen a few cases when booting from size-minimized images
that even if the universe repository is enabled there never was an "apt
update" run (The data packed into the image would be stale anyway, so
there is no reason to bloat it), and therefore no sources to install it
are known. When you check - as recommended by Hans - if -universe is
enabled, then make sure to also run "sudo apt update" before trying to
install again.

[Bug 1788622] Re: systemctl reload unbound command times out

2018-08-23 Thread  Christian Ehrhardt 
Hi Alexey,
I agree - I can reproduce the error and see just the same.

Bionic - reload hangs and then fails, eventually the service is fully restarted
due to the kill after timeout
Cosmic - working fine and reports:

The logs contain a few unrelated warnings as I run it in a container, but one
can see the difference. Both logs show
1. install (and start of service)
2. calling systemctl reload

I could not recreate the issue mentioned in bug, But machine is going in to
Error state after below steps.

1. Activate the partition with 130GB.
2. Add 20GB.
3. Remove 20GB.
4. Trigger fadump.

Thanks,
Pavithra

Reference Code indicates copy error (B200541A). The fix for this problem is
to restart kdump-tools service after DLPAR operations being tracked via
bug 150355.

Thanks

[Bug 1752411] Re: bind9-host, avahi-daemon-check-dns.sh hang forever causes network connections to get stuck

2018-08-23 Thread Trent Lloyd
I agree with the sentiment that 5 seconds feels too long, however as a
workaround I decided I would just copy the existing timeout. I certainly
would not want to make it longer since this is in the critical boot
path.

I would generally agree that in general a DNS request should fail faster
however there are some cases where it won't, e.g. spanning tree bring up
on ports can take 2 seconds.

My hope is to correctly fix host after getting this in, since the impact
is very high for affected users.

This check may actually be able to go away, I believe both systemd-
resolved and libnss-mdns (latest version that I think is not in bionic)
implement the .local label checking to do this at runtime instead of
this old hack. So for cosmic+ we can probably get rid of this logic,
which always sucked anyway. As we only needed to really disable nss-mdns
and not avahi entirely (since apps should normally resolve the IPs using
avahi's API anyway, the impact to actual avahi usage is low).

Since the impact is high but only on a smaller subset of users, I think
we should go with matching the current timeout for now and worry about
further improvements later.

I've verified the cosmic upload is working as expected on a non-affected
system.

[Bug 1788781] [NEW] acer aspire E 15 E5-575-54SM load installed ubuntu 18.04.1

2018-08-23 Thread sdtqwe4ty
Public bug reported:

I installed ubuntu and grub won't load. I even tried installing ubuntu
on a flash drive so that when I make my bios boot loader show up my
computer will be forced to load ubuntu cause of course that's all the
flash drive contains. Also my computer boots from the live cd edition of
ubuntu running on a flash drive just fine. Instead only my C drive and
the flash drive containing the live cd version show up in my boot
loader.

[Bug 1788776] [NEW] Ubuntu 18.04 samba/samb-vfs-module not compiled/built --with-acl-support or zfsacl vfs module

2018-08-23 Thread invtrasys
Public bug reported:

According to Samba4 documentation, there is a vfs module that is
supposed to work hand in hand with zfs, called zfsacl. The documentation
for this (for 4.7.6) can be found listed here:
https://www.samba.org/samba/docs/4.7/man-html/vfs_zfsacl.8.html

However, when attempting to use the zfsacl vfs module in a smb.conf file like
so:
[storage]
path = "/mnt/zfs_pool/storage"
printable = no
veto files = /.snapshot/.windows/.mac/.zfs/
writeable = yes
browseable = yes
access based share enum = no
recycle:repository = .recycle/%U
recycle:keeptree = yes
recycle:versions = yes
recycle:touch = yes
recycle:directory_mode = 0777
recycle:subdir_mode = 0700
vfs objects = streams_xattr recycle zfsacl
hide dot files = no
guest ok = no
nfs4:mode = special
nfs4:acedup = merge
nfs4:chown = yes

Samba will start the service fine, but then reports the following in log.smbd
when attempting to access the share:

[Bug 1784501] Re: libvirtd is unable to configure bridge devices inside of LXD containers

2018-08-23 Thread Mike Pontillo
Nothing has changed regarding privileged vs. unprivileged settings.

I just set this up again with a privileged container, and I believe the
cause of the regression to actually be in libvirt. I think it must have
silently ignored the bridge configuration error before and marked the
network active (such that it shows up in `virsh net-list` without the
`--all` parameter).

Reasoning: yesterday before I rebuilt my test container, MAAS showed
only two networks; none of which were virbr* interfaces (I never
explicitly deleted the default virsh network). Today when I encountered
this bug, MAAS showed three (because I made the container privileged).
Additionally, MAAS KVM pods check to see if a `default` or `maas`
network is active in virsh before allowing a KVM pod to be composed.
Therefore, unless libvirt believed its `default` network was up and
running, my previous test environment would not have worked at all.

Conclusion: we're just now seeing this because libvirt (in bionic-
updates) began raising an error and failing to mark a network active in
the case that it could not configure the bridge STP parameters.

[Bug 1788775] [NEW] updating grub can end up with loopback devices in grub.cfg

2018-08-23 Thread Michael Hudson-Doyle
Public bug reported:

I had (I think, I can't quite remember) the filesystem.squashfs from a
live server ISO mounted when the kernel was updated. A menu entry for
this OS-resembling device is now in my grub.cfg:

menuentry 'Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS (18.04) (on /dev/loop35p1)' --class ubuntu
--class gnu-linux --class gnu --class os $menuentry_id_option
'osprober-gnulinux-simple-cf05f674-791e-48eb-9b42-1bb903f4d024' {
insmod part_msdos
insmod ext2
if [ x$feature_platform_search_hint = xy ]; then
  search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root
cf05f674-791e-48eb-9b42-1bb903f4d024
else
  search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root
cf05f674-791e-48eb-9b42-1bb903f4d024
fi
linux /boot/vmlinuz-4.15.0-29-generic
root=UUID=cf05f674-791e-48eb-9b42-1bb903f4d024 ro
initrd /boot/initrd.img-4.15.0-29-generic
}

I didn't select it :)

Something in this setup should be skipping loopback devices, surely?

[Bug 1709164] Re: [MIR] bubblewrap

2018-08-23 Thread Jed Davis
Ubuntu does enable unprivileged userns by default (at least on desktop
installs?), but there's at least one exception to watch out for: the
lightdm "guest session" option applies an AppArmor policy that allows
CLONE_NEWUSER but denies any use of the resulting capabilities; see also
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1434528 where we ran into
that with Firefox. There's an exception for Chromium's sandbox, so in
principle that could also be done for bubblewrap.

[Bug 1787548] Re: PAM fscrypt adds root(0) group to all users called by su

2018-08-23 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package fscrypt - 0.2.2-0ubuntu2.1

---
fscrypt (0.2.2-0ubuntu2.1) bionic-security; urgency=medium

  * SECURITY UPDATE: Privilege escalation via improperly restored
supplementary groups in libpam-fscrypt (LP: #1787548)
- CVE-2018-6558.patch: Save the euid, egid, and supplementary groups when
entering the PAM module, drop privileges to perform actions on behalf of
the user, and then properly restore the saved values before exiting the
PAM module. Based on patch from upstream.
- CVE-2018-6558
  * 0001-security-drop-and-regain-privileges-in-all-threads.patch: Drop and
regain privileges in all threads of the current process
  * 0001-Ensure-keyring-privilege-changes-are-reversible.patch: Ensure keyring

the problem. Please test the kernel and update this bug with the
results. If the problem is solved, change the tag 'verification-needed-
bionic' to 'verification-done-bionic'. If the problem still exists,
change the tag 'verification-needed-bionic' to 'verification-failed-
bionic'.

If verification is not done by 5 working days from today, this fix will
be dropped from the source code, and this bug will be closed.

See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how
to enable and use -proposed. Thank you!
