[Bug 1808125] Re: [WORKAROUND] Ubuntu 18.10 boot hangs with INTEL GRAPHICS at msg "Starting bpfilter"

2018-12-12 Thread rtimai
I ran #journalctl -b-1 > prevboot.txt in Recovery Mode after a hung GDM3
login attampt, then re-enabled SLiM DM to log in. The upload of this
file was taking forever, so, I checked, and it's 771.2 MB! I am
attempting to re-upload it as a compressed file
hp15-ay016nr_journal.tar.xz 10.8 MB.

[Bug 1700645] Re: gpg-agent not running when needed by Déjà Dup

2018-12-12 Thread Josef Möllers
'morning,
I'm also affected, I'm not sure since when as I only occasionally receive
encrypted emails.

Ubuntu 16.04.5 LTS
gpgv 1.4.20-1ubuntu3.3
gnupg-agent 2.1.11-6ubuntu2.1

1) use-agent is active in ~/.gnupg/gpg.conf
2) gpg-agent fails to start due to a missing /run/usr/$UID/gnupg directory
(/run/usr/$UID exists)
3) After repair ("mkdir /run/usr/$UID/gnupg"), gpg-agent starts automagically
with these arguments: --homedir /home/josef/.gnupg --use-standard-socket
--daemon, but still the socket is create in /run/user/UID/gnupg!
4) /etc/X11/Xsession.d/90gpg-agent exists
5) I use KDE (kde-baseapps-bin 4:15.12.3-0ubuntu1, though other KDE packages
are 4:5.5.5-0ubuntu1).

[Bug 1805920] Re: iPXE ignores vlan 0 traffic

2018-12-12 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
Thank Vern for outlining your testcase.

@Vern
Doesn't that also have to include some component that does QoS management
adding the VLAN-0 tag?

I don't have the systems to verify this case on Bionic and Cosmic.
As I read it from Vern he can only test Bionic at the Customer and is unsure he
can test Cosmic the same way.

@MAAS team - Would you have a MAAS tets environment that you can re-use to
verify this?
If so could you confirm that you can locally trigger the bug as it is today so
that we can rely on it on SRU processing?

@Vern - if above is Nack'ed by the MAAS team could you ask if you could
if could get nodes to verify that on Cosmic as well. As I read your test
description I think it would be enough to bump the node that is supposed
to start the guest to Cosmic+Proposed then - no need to update all
systems to Cosmic.

[Bug 1808266] Re: Docker daemon drops all bound ports, recovers them after long docker ps

2018-12-12 Thread Aidan Hunt
Thanks for taking a look, Tianon. You're right that Docker appears to be
behaving normally... running journalctl -b I see that the system did in
fact reboot causing the Docker shutdown, and that it came back online at
19:29:45 with multiuser system target being reached at 19:30:04.

So my issue is with why it took systemd so long after bootup to start
dockerd, not with Docker itself... apologies for not checking that out
first. I'm guessing that there is something in the CLI that told systemd
to start it when I ran docker ps?

[Bug 1808266] Re: Docker daemon drops all bound ports, recovers them after long docker ps

This sounds to me like Docker restarted for some reason -- do you have
some kind of automated update process in place? If it's unattended, it
could potentially restart Docker, but the logs you've provided include a
host reboot too, which would definitely look like this externally.

[Bug 1568604] Re: Mouse cursor lost when unlocking with Intel graphics

2018-12-12 Thread Steve Baker
I'm seeing something like this on a 32bit Acer laptop - with Intel
graphics - running Kubuntu 18.04.1 - it's been doing it for quite a long
time - but it's still a current bug - I did a full apt upgrade/update
just today.

When the machine awakes from a sleep (eg with by closing and opening the
lid) the mouse cursor is gone - and the whole screen below the mouse
position is white. So as you move the mouse up and down and it covers
and uncovers the entire screen. You have no way to tell where the X
position of the mouse is - but it does seem to work and you can still
click on things.

Switching to a different virtual console and back again using Ctrl-Alt-
Fn seems to fix it...until the machine goes to sleep again.

Seems like maybe some piece of graphics state isn't being properly saved
and restored.

[Bug 1807334] Re: Add support for ALC3277 codec on new Dell edge gateways

2018-12-12 Thread Hui Wang
** Description changed:

- There are two audio jacks on the device, one for Line-in and the other
- for Line-out.

- Audio over these jacks is supported through Realtek ALC3277 (RT5660)
- audio codec connected to the Processor/SoC over I2C. While the kernel
- already has the driver for the Codec, we still need a machine driver to
- connect audio FrontEnds provided by the Codec to the Intel SST Audio
- BackEnds.
+ [Impact]
+ The Dell Edge IoT Gateway is based on kabylake, and the audio codec is alc3277
+ which is connected to kabylake PCH via SSP0, there is no ASoC machine driver
+ for this board, so the audio (line-out and line-in) can't work.
+
+
+ [Fix]
+ write a ASoC machine driver for this board, and this driver is based on
+ the existing driver kbl_rt5663_max98927.c
+
+
+ [Test Case]
+ play sound via line-out jack, record sound via line-in jack, all work well.
+
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ Very low, this machine driver is specific to Dell Edge IoT Gateway. Only
+ the machine with the HID:10EC3277 in the BIOS can use this driver.

  Ubuntu 18.10, kernel 4.18.0-12-generic, GNOME Shell 3.30.1 on X11, after
  a Dec 9 update:

  Boot hangs at message, "Starting bpfilter." Gnome Display Manager
  (login) fails to start. No keyboard response, tapping the power button
  just once immediately initiates power-down. Other users have reported
  successfully fixing this by removing nVidia drivers or disabling Wayland
  in GDM3 (uncommenting WaylandEnable=false in /etc/gdm3/custom.conf.)

  However, my HP laptop runs Intel graphics, and has no nVidia drivers
  installed.

  WORKAROUND
  I selected Enable Networking in Recovery Mode, then Drop to Shell Prompt
(root,) and ran

   apt update && apt install slim

  to install SLiM display manager. the installation prompted me to choose
  SLiM or GDM as the default, I chose SLiM, and was able to login finally
  (after rebooting 50+ times.)

  If you already have an alternate display manager installed, you can
  switch with "sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm" and select the alt dm.

- This will probably be just a provisional workaround for the "bpfilter
- hang" on non-nVidia systems if all the other suggested solutions didn't
- work for you. BTW, I also tried LightDM a former Ubuntu DM, but got the
- identical bootup hang.

[Bug 1805546] Re: ubuntu is using half of my battery

2018-12-12 Thread Daniel van Vugt
No, Ubuntu doesn't get a choice as to which battery cells get used.

If you can find some software configuration that doesn't have the
problem then we can compare it to that which does have the problem and
narrow it down further. Otherwise this bug is too vague and will
automatically close after 60 days on inactivity.

[Bug 1808264] Re: caldav free-busy query is broken

2018-12-12 Thread Jamie McClymont
I have added a patch which applies both upstream merge requests linked
above. I was not above to successfully set up pbuilder, but built and
tested it successfully with debuild in a bionic VM. Subscribing ubuntu-
sru in accordance with http://packaging.ubuntu.com/html/security-and-
stable-release-updates.html as I'm pretty sure the change I'm requesting
would be a stable release update.

Aiming justify that update: this is a significant regression because
somewhere between Xenial and Bionic, this caldav freebusy code was
rewritten and broken. Additionally somewhere in that timeframe the
behavior changed from using the address book's FBURL to using this
caldav-based technique (which, again, doesn't work :)

[Bug 1780841] Re: ubuntu-release-upgrader should transition debs to snaps

2018-12-12 Thread Mark Eichin
Not sure if this should get a new ticket, but if `snap debug
connectivity` fails, the whole upgrade mysteriously aborts (user sees
```Reading state information... Done
Restoring original system state
Aborting
``` and `main.log` shows ```2018-12-12 21:24:20,067 DEBUG running
Quirks.bionicPostInitialUpdate
2018-12-12 21:24:20,367 DEBUG abort called
``` with literally no other output anywhere.
`strace` is what finds the `snap debug connectivity` call, and `service
snapd status` shows `Active: failed (Result: start-limit-hit)` -
`service snapd start` fixes that and `do-release-upgrade` goes through
fine.
(It's not just me, https://askubuntu.com/questions/1078692/cant-upgrade-
ubuntu-16-04-to-18-04-lts/1100514 looks to be the same symptoms, but it
wasn't until I'd figured out that `snap` was involved that I found this
feature-ticket; I don't think it's widely known, I believe most users
don't even know snap is *in* 16.04, and certainly won't notice `snapd`
being broken without other hints...)
[Bug 1805715] Re: password exposed in application windows
2018-12-12 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Yes, in fact we can say with some confidence that the issue was probably
fixed in a later Gnome version since no one else is reporting the issue
in 18.04/18.10.
If only we knew what fixed it and where then we would be able to
backport that fix :/
[Bug 1808226] Re: Rotated screen is blank in Wayland sessions [Failed to set CRTC mode 1600x1200: No space left on device]
2018-12-12 Thread HankB
I updated to 18.10 in place. That fixes the problem with the blank
screen. Unfortunately the menu to the upper left does not seem to get
focus. To logout I go to the upper right and type logout which loads a
'logout app.' I suppose that's a different bug.
Thank you for your help. Please let me know if you would like further
testing. I'm working with scripts to install Ubuntu (and Debian) on ZFS
root and can load up a fresh install in a little longer than it takes to
install using the conventional installer.
Re: [Bug 1600622] Re: Screen doesn't lock or go to sleep when certain Chrome tabs are open
2018-12-12 Thread Tim Richardson
I have noticed that
a) systemctl suspend
does actually suspend, but it takes about 30 seconds.
I'm on 18.04.1 with kernel 4.18.0-13-generic from the proposed PPA
This is quite surprising, but good news. I don't know why this is working
now. It works with either Chromium or Chrome open, with hangouts running.
Because gnome uses systemctl suspend, this means that manual suspend from
gnome shell is also working.
I just suspended right now with a hangouts conversation in progress and a
Zoom meeting started, and it succeeded.
Maybe the more recent kernel fixes it?
b)
pkexec systemctl -i suspend
(run with root privileges)
always works, but this is less suprising, since -i means ignore
inhibitors.
[Bug 1808266] [NEW] Docker daemon drops all bound ports, recovers them after long docker ps
2018-12-12 Thread Aidan Hunt
Public bug reported:
This event ocourred on a single-node Docker.io version
18.06.1-0ubuntu1~18.04.1, Docker version Docker version 18.06.1-ce,
build e68fc7a, Ubuntu version 18.04.1 LTS, kernel Linux
4.15.0-42-generic #45-Ubuntu SMP Thu Nov 15 19:32:57 UTC 2018 x86_64
x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux.
At 2018-12-12 19:30:04, our uptime monitor detected that all sites
hosted in Docker containers, with ports exposed to the outside world,
were down. Upon investigation, netstat showed that docker did not have
any ports open, and ip addr showed that docker had no network
interfaces.
Finally, after various troubleshooting attempts, I ran "docker ps" at
the command prompt. The ps command, which normally returns instantly,
produces no output and hung. I hit ^C and re-ran the command. After a
few seconds, the command returned that all containers which should have
been running were running. Netstat and ip addr showed normal Docker
network configuration, and all containers sprung back to life with
normal functionality. I suspect this means that the docker daemon hung,
and docker ps somehow returned it to its normal state.
Unfortunately debug mode wasn't on, and I have been unable to reproduce.
I've enabled it and will update back if it recurs. I've attached the
journalctl (truncated to start at 1900 hours) and the stack tract
manually generated with a SIGUSR1 after everything went back to normal.
  I have connected an external monitor to my notebook. The display of the
  new monitor had some windows protruding that were actually displayed in
  maximized mode on the internal monitor (GNOME Calendar and Tasks). It
  wasn't until I selected these windows that they retreated from the
  external monitor and were maximized only on the internal monitor.
  The windows should adjust their resolution immediately after the
[Bug 1807539] Re: Screen orientation is locked if external monitor is connected
2018-12-12 Thread Daniel van Vugt
** Description changed:
+ https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/issues/847
+
+ ---
+
  As described above. I'm using a Thinpad X1 Yoga. Normally the screen
  orientation changes when I rotate the device or operate it in tent mode,
  for example. Unfortunately, this does not work if an external monitor
  (via HDMI) is connected to the device. In this case the screen
  orientation is fixed, so that e.g. a change into the tent mode is no
  longer possible.
  It would be nice if the screen would still change its orientation
  despite the attached external screen.
[Bug 1808264] [NEW] caldav free-busy query is broken
2018-12-12 Thread Jamie McClymont
Public bug reported:
A couple of bugs are present which make CalDAV scheduling effectively
useless - the combined effect of them is that everyone else shows as
having your availability information, rather than their own.
I have patched the bugs upstream, and they have been merged into the
branches for both 3.30.4 and 3.31.4:
* https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/evolution-data-server/merge_requests/8
* https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/evolution-data-server/merge_requests/7
I'm hoping to backport these patches to bionic, which packages 3.28 -- I
will submit such a debdiff later today. I am submitting here rather than
to Debian as the versions of this package in Debian are out of lockstep
with Ubuntu's, so the patch doesn't cleanly transfer -- let me know if
this is the wrong approach.
Cosmic is on the 3.30 release series, which I assume means the fix will
come from upstream and doesn't need to be applied here, but let me know
if I should do a patch for that as well.
Thanks :)
[Bug 1805546] Re: ubuntu is using half of my battery
2018-12-12 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks. It appears Chrome is using the most power there, followed by
gnome-shell which is a result of Chrome and other apps redrawing.
So we can't blame "Ubuntu" for using the battery. The current versions
of Chrome, and even the sites it visits, didn't exist in 16.04 so you
can't really compare 18.04 to 16.04 in that respect.
Unless 'powertop' on this machine suggests any kind of low-level device
or kernel problems, we will need to find a software configuration that
works (doesn't use so much power). Then we would be able to identify
roughly when some regression occurred. Without that, this bug is
presently too vague to do anything with.
[Bug 1808226] Re: rotated screen is blank
2018-12-12 Thread Daniel van Vugt
It sounds like this bug is only affecting "Ubuntu on Wayland" and not
"Ubuntu". Is that right?
The error message:
  Failed to set CRTC mode 1600x1200: No space left on device
comes from mutter's eglnative (Wayland) backend, after calling
drmModeSetCrtc. So  "No space left on device" is an error from the
kernel with no further explanation :(
Can you please try logging into "Ubuntu" (the Xorg session), run
'xrandr' and send us the output?
[Bug 1807056] Re: Occasional Keyboard freeze
Thanks. I can't find any obvious explanation in that log.
Are you able to try installing a shell that's not gnome-shell? I would
like to know if the problem is confined to gnome-shell.
Try installing package 'unity-session' and log into Unity instead. Does
the problem still happen?
[Bug 1776563] Re: Acer Aspire A315 IOAPIC failure on Ubuntu 18.04, kernel hangs, can't load, kernel freeze (AMD Ryzen 5/Radeon/Raven) / AMDGPU Hybrid crash
2018-12-12 Thread Michael J
Hi All...Have A315-41-R8UU Bios v. 1.11. What I have tested: Debian 9
Stretch [with firmware] kernel 4.9x, xfce4...This boots, without issue,
but haven't tested out it's stability long-term. No boot args needed.
Brightness controls do not work. Also tested openSUSE Leap 15, no boot
args, KDE edition. Brightness controls do not work. Will eventually
freeze after some time idle. On both distros, get the same acpi bugs
during boot. To try and mitigate some of the BIOS bugs, I turned off
WoL, SATA ch1, Open Lid resume, Disable TPM (would get tpm errors on
boot), D2D Recovery disabled, secure boot disabled, and basic touchpad.
Oddly, when attempting to install xubuntu 18 LTS or debian 9 testing,
that's when I get all the errors described above. I have added the
ivrs_ioapic[4]=00:14.0 ivrs_ioapic[5]=0:00.2 to grub when trying to run
the installers, and they will indeed run, at low resolution. Why would
older kernels run without the boot params for acpi, while these newer
kernels will not? Maybe this can help someone? This thing so far, is a
paperweight.
[Bug 1795764] Re: systemd: core: Fix edge case when processing /proc/self/mountinfo
2018-12-12 Thread Eric Desrochers
** Description changed:
  [Impact]
  kubernetes loaded inactive dead transient mount points grows
  https://github.com/kubernetes/kubernetes/issues/57345
  [Test Case]
- # cd /root
+ # cd /tmp
  # mkdir -p bind-test/abc
  # mount --bind bind-test bind-test
  # mount -t tmpfs tmpfs bind-test/abc
  # umount bind-test/abc
  # systemctl list-units --all | grep bind-test
- root-bind\x2dtest-abc.mount loaded inactive dead /root/bind-test/abc
- root-bind\x2dtest.mount loaded active mounted /root/bind-test
+ tmp-bind\x2dtest-abc.mount loaded inactive dead /tmp/bind-test/abc
+ tmp-bind\x2dtest.mount loaded active mounted /tmp/bind-test
  Expected outcome (w/ the fix) :
- # cd /root
+ # cd /tmp
  # mkdir -p bind-test/abc
  # mount --bind bind-test bind-test
  # mount -t tmpfs tmpfs bind-test/abc
  # umount bind-test/abc
  # systemctl list-units --all | grep bind-test
- root-bind\x2dtest.mount loaded active mounted /root/bind-test
+ tmp-bind\x2dtest.mount loaded active mounted /tmp/bind-test
  [Regression Potential]
  This is a adapted version of 2 upstream fixes as the original upstream
  commit has been made on top on 2 functions mount_setup_new_unit() &
  mount_setup_existing_unit() that not yet exist systemd 229. It is easily
  adaptable because the current function mount_setup_unit() is dealing
  with both of at the moment instead of being individually separate in two
  distinct function.
  It is an adaptation of commits :
  [65d36b495] core: Fix edge case when processing /proc/self/mountinfo
  [03b8cfede] core: make sure to init mount params before calling
mount_is_extrinsic()
  This patch changes mount_setup_unit() to prevent the just_mounted mount
  setup flag from being overwritten if it is set to true. This will allow
  all mount units created from /proc/self/mountinfo entries to be
  initialised properly.
  Additionally, the patch got the blessing of 'xnox' who looked at it and
  mention it looks fine to him.
  Related kubernetes issue:
  https://github.com/kubernetes/kubernetes/issues/57345
  systemd v237 has this fix, but we'd like to have it fixed in 16.04.
  It only affect systemd for Xenial, later release already has the fix:
  $ git describe --contains 65d36b495
  v237~140
  ==>  systemd | 229-4ubuntu21.4  | xenial-updates
   systemd | 237-3ubuntu10.3  | bionic-updates
   systemd | 239-7ubuntu9 | cosmic
  [Original Description]
  From the PR:
  Currently, if there are two /proc/self/mountinfo entries with the same
  mount point path, the mount setup flags computed for the second of
  these two entries will overwrite the mount setup flags computed for
  the first of these two entries. This is the root cause of issue #7798.
  This patch changes mount_setup_existing_unit to prevent the
  just_mounted mount setup flag from being overwritten if it is set to
  true. This will allow all mount units created from /proc/self/mountinfo
  entries to be initialized properly.
The sweethome3e you get from the snap is version 5.7.
To use the 6.0 version use:
The reason it works is probably because it includes the Oracle Java JRE.
[Bug 1808254] [NEW] clipit breaks selection entirely, cannot select things (instantly deselected) and therefore not copy/paste
2018-12-12 Thread jt
Public bug reported:
When ClipIt is running under LXDE, both installed freshly as they ship
with Ubuntu, the selection in any window/program is completely broken:
text selection and copy/paste useless.
@z80-ben Yes, you are right, UX931UA is not part of the list, it could have
worked :/
Be sure that you have no configuration error on /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
Tested on Asus UX333, UX433, UX533 with ALC294
Support for Asus G751, P5440FF, X430UN, D640SA, UX550GE, X705FD; X430UN,
GL503VM, Q524UQK, X542UN with ALC256 and some others.
A lot of Acer computers too and some other brands.
It does:
"The macOS keyboard shortcut to add "www" and ".com" to a URL is now
ctrl-enter instead of [apple]-enter"
This is the only by-default change here. See the end of comment 124.
No, the relnote just got repeatedly rewritten to simplify it and make it
understandable/relevant for people who hadn't followed this bug.
> What is the opt-out mechanism?
On Windows/Linux you can change this by setting
`browser.urlbar.ctrlCanonizesURLs` to false.
Was this dropped for the final release?
What is the opt-out mechanism?
PS: Bugzilla needs a "final summary" field where things like this are
documented.
[Bug 1797936] Re: Control Center->Disks cannot create ext4 partition on 5 TB external USB drive
2018-12-12 Thread Robert Pearson
Dear Sebastien Bacher,
Yes< I was using the Disks app from the Control Center. I used gParted
and solved the problem. Unfortunately I have had to reinstall Ubuntu 3
times since then, so additional data is not available. (Always keep you
data in a separate partition from the Linux partition. Then when you
have to reinstall Linux, your data stays intact.)
I am currently using the leading edge Ubuntu MATE 18.10 since I am
disappointed in the LTS ever since I found that the bug with duplex-
printing in LibreOffice for HP printers was reported over 5 YEARS ago
and no one has ever been assigned to fix it. They were considering
removing the bug since it is so old and has never been fixed.
