[Bug 1798562] Re: After a side by side installation, resized filesystem is corrupted

2019-01-02 Thread Rahul Negi
Hello , I face same issue

it shows busybox command line and says file system is corrupted ( tells
to use fsck)

and after doing that from live disk ( i saw it was asking to move nodes
which repairing ) the next time system reboots the kernel panics, errors
were " not syncing attempting to kill" ," bad RF code "

im using windows 10 and ubuntu 18.10 alongside

i have installed it like 8-9 times and after 3-4 reboots , file system
corrupts

we can increase the fs corruption time if we do software update

after updating all updates , next reboot corrupts the filesystem ( does
not take more reboots )

[Bug 1810372] [NEW] Infinite busy-loop trying to cull when cache space is short

2019-01-02 Thread Daniel Axtens
Public bug reported:

[Impact]

A user reports that cachefilesd will spin at 100% of a cpu when started
on a filesystem where the free space is less than the bcull threshold
and culling the cache is insufficient to free up space.

Investigation shows that this is because cachefilesd detects that
culling is required, tries to cull, and does not realise that culling
cannot free up enough space, so just keeps retrying.

[Testing/Reproducing]

I created a VM with a spare disk, mounted it to /raid (or whatever).
I changed the /etc/default/cachefilesd to start at boot, filled the /raid
filesystem to over the bcull threshold, and started cachefilesd. When running
top, the cachefilesd process is at the top using approx 100% of 1 CPU. It
appears to be trying to free up space in the cache (that is not even used)
because the filesystem is over the threshold for culling.

[Fix]

This is fixed upstream in 0.10.6:

* Wed Feb 3 2016 David Howells  0.10.6-1
...
- Suspend culling when cache space is short and cache objects are pinned.

The particular patch is ce353f5b6b5b ("cachefilesd can spin when disk
space is short.")

[Regression Potential]
The patch is small and easily understood and backports with minimal effort.

[Bug 1810368] Re: gnome-control-center refuses to open on fresh install

2019-01-02 Thread CorQB
Some further information: As I'm intending to switch to MATE for
preference anyway, I went ahead and installed the ubuntu-mate-desktop
package and set gdm3 to default in the process (I believe it is already
default for Bionic?); now on boot I see the MATE loading screen, am
taken to the Gnome login screen, gnome-control-center opens. The halt-
on-shutdown bug, another bug I've seen a few threads on with fresh
installs, and had with my last install as well as this, was also fixed.
So now I'm wondering, what has MATE changed during it's install to fix
these bugs? Interesting.

** Description changed:

control center will not open; it shows a loading notification on the top
panel briefly, then does nothing. I have attempted to restore

This is the second install I've produced this bug on, the first being a

[Bug 1799988] Re: Missing wifi and bluetooth after sleep on XPS 9370

2019-01-02 Thread Kai-Heng Feng
Please enable btusb autosuspend during test.

This is what happened:
[25781.865975] PM: suspend entry (deep)
System is about to suspend to deep (S3),

[25782.016682] pci_pm_suspend(): hcd_pci_suspend+0x0/0x30 returns -16
[25782.016691] dpm_run_callback(): pci_pm_suspend+0x0/0x130 returns -16
[25782.016694] PM: Device :00:14.0 failed to suspend async: error -16
[25782.920799] PM: Some devices failed to suspend, or early wake event detected
But the xHC (USB controller) wakes up early, so the system aborted S3,

[25782.922906] usb usb1-port7: status 0103 change 0004
The one wakes xHC up is btusb, which is woken up by BLE events,

[25783.167977] PM: suspend exit
[25783.168050] PM: suspend entry (s2idle)
System tries to suspend again, via s2idle. This happens more than once.

[25842.804908] PM: suspend entry (deep)
[25842.804912] PM: Syncing filesystems ... done.
[25842.834864] Freezing user space processes ... (elapsed 0.002 seconds) done.
[25842.837207] OOM killer disabled.
[25842.837208] Freezing remaining freezable tasks ... (elapsed 0.001 seconds)
done.
[25842.838619] Suspending console(s) (use no_console_suspend to debug)

Finally it suspends successfully, but both btusb and ath10k_pci devices fail to
work:
[25843.579504] ath10k_pci :02:00.0: Refused to change power state,
currently in D3
[25844.303534] usb 1-7: device descriptor read/64, error -71

Most devices' .resume() and .suspend() callbacks rely on full system
suspend/resume works successfully. This assumption breaks when the first
system suspend fails, which is cause by the BLE event.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1279762 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1279762

You seem to have installed the cinnamon package on Ubuntu 13.10.
Unfortunately, that package is not available yet for 14.04. To upgrade
to Ubuntu 14.04 LTS you'll need to either wait for a fix for cinnamon to
be available or uninstall the package and then upgrade.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 1810362] Re: System completely hangs, high disk I/O when running a VirtualBox VM alongside Firefox with a few tabs open

2019-01-02 Thread spm2011
** Description changed:

Experienced complete system lockup and hang on two different machines
when trying to boot a VirtualBox VM running Fedora 29 live (no virtual
disk) when Firefox is open with a few (~5-10) inactive tabs.

  System 1:
  4GB RAM host
  1536MB guest, no virtual disk
  swapfile

  System 2:
  6 GB RAM host
  1792MB guest, no virtual disk
  separate swap partition (4GB)

  - Load Fedora in guest from live ISO

- The entire system locks up for easily 30 minutes or more, with constant
- host disk activity. GNOME shell becomes completely unresponsive.
- Requires closing the lid to attempt force sleep and resume to be able to
- regain access to the applications and GNOME shell. After resuming, VM
- seems to be usable.
+ On boot of the guest (after boot menu), the entire system locks up for
+ easily 30 minutes or more, with constant host disk activity. GNOME shell

+ interacting doesn't work and the UI shell doesn't respond to mouse
+ hover. Requires closing the lid to attempt force sleep and resume to be
+ able to regain access to the applications and GNOME shell. After
+ resuming, VM seems to be usable.

Seems like the system is running low on memory but not
handling/terminating applications, and thrashing, and/or there are bad
memory leaks happening when booting the VM.

Runs normally or fails out of memory without locking up the entire system.

[Bug 1810337] Re: p7zip-full privlege gain?

2019-01-02 Thread Seth Arnold
Hello Kenneth, thanks for contacting us.

This is almost certainly intentional behaviour (and, actually, unrelated
to p7zip):

The permissions to create or delete a file in a directory depends upon
the *directory* owner and permissions.

In your example, the unprivileged user was able to create and delete the
file in the directory, so the unprivileged user can do so again via the
7zip unpacking operation. It doesn't matter that someone else owned the
file. The kernel doesn't care about file owner when deleting it. A
process only needs write and execute access to the directory in order to
delete files within the directory.

Thanks

[Bug 1774711] Re: excessive seccomp audit logs

2019-01-02 Thread A. Denton
After some research I can now safely confirm this bug. However, the log
lines do not seem to be related to any rules in "/etc/audit/rules.d" or
AppArmor profiles loaded. %‑)

The only difference between the log lines in *this* bug report, my lines
and the ones mentioned on
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1507282 seems to be system-
specific configuration, e.g. SELinux.

Over the past 24 hours, I also had sometimes 100 lines at once in my log
when opening or reloading a web page, in a new tab in Firefox. Therefore
Firefox seems to be the only "offending" application at present.

I also cleared the /etc/audit/rules.d and uninstalled the AppArmor
extras packages (apparmor-profiles, apparmor-profiles-extra) with the
Firefox profiles in it. Unfortunately the logs lines still poured in.
Therefore I also changed the abstractions for Firefox
(/etc/apparmor.d/abstractions/ubuntu-browsers) and commented out
everything Firefox related, with no avail.

The problem is somewhere deeper and not Firefox-specific. I hope Tyler
Hicks (tyhicks) is correct and the fixes mentioned will soon be
available. Due to the problem I generated several GiB of logs a day
which is not so good for my SSD (even with wear-leveling).

My temporary workaround is to stop auditd, since unlike
/etc/systemd/journald.conf there is no Storage=volatile option for
auditd. :-0 ',:-l >:/

[Bug 1774711] Re: excessive seccomp audit logs

2019-01-02 Thread A. Denton
Oh in short my /etc/audit/rules.d/audit.rules looks like this:

-D
-b 8192
-f 1
-i
--backlog_wait_time 0
-w /etc/anacrontab -p w -k AU-FS01-0001
[some more -w `foo` -p w -k `bar` here ...]

Has someone here tried
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1117953 / adding a "-a

However,

 looks very promising!

-* on whether the current task itself is being audited.
-*/
-   return audit_seccomp(syscall, signr, action);
+   audit_seccomp(syscall, signr, action);

Thanks Tyler! :×

Sure mp3 would be way better. I just dont know how rtp works. I think
its reasonable to use mp3 here. However I dont know how that works for
streams and with pulse.

Fixing the compression method would be the better fix, however a
specific ip/hostname would not hurt neither.

The data can certainly be compressed. I don't know if you've ever
compared the sizes of mp3 and wav files. Typical compressed audio, when
using a lossy codec, requires perhaps one tenth of the bandwidth that
uncompressed audio requires, without too much effect on the audio
quality.

Changing module-rtp-send to support hostnames doesn't sound terribly
complicated.

[Bug 411688]

2019-01-02 Thread Freedesktop-u
You are right that this feature needs to be enabled first to make the
bug rise. However I do not think that documentating this bug/behavior
solves the problem. I do want to use music streaming, but I cannot do
this as my router routes the traffic into the WLAN.

Lowering the rate is possibly not a good idea as it results in worse
quality. The format is by default "s16be" about which I have no idea
what a different format would help. I do not know if the data can
somehow be compress further, because this would definitely be an idea,
but I dont know the procols internal.

So the only left option is to solve the routing. For my personal setup
there is no way to fix this on the router side, so the sender pulse
module needs to take care of it. Using an ip as destination works
perfectly and would be an option to use (which should be added to
paprefs). However I tried that the last days and due to dhcp my receiver
always gets a new IP and using hostnames would be a better idea.

But the module does not seem to support hostnames. So I am wondering if
this could be fixed quite simple or needs a whole more work to do.

Another option would be to possibly create a port on the localhost and
route that to the destination ip/name. And the kernel itself can do the
name resolution. However I have no idea about that, but this could at
least be a workaround to solve this issue.

Other opinions?

[Bug 411688]

2019-01-02 Thread Tanu Kaskinen
Sending a wav file means a TCP connection between two computers. TCP
connections are the most common type of traffic, and the hardware is
optimized accordingly. UDP multicast is different, and apparently
network hardware is not necessarily as efficient with processing that
protocol. Comment #9 seems to suggest that the wifi specification itself
forces multicast to be inefficient, so it's not necessarily just the
hardware's fault.

Starting from PA version 5.0, module-rtp-send should not generate
traffic when nothing is playing (it can still be configured to play
silence, but paprefs doesn't configure the module that way). If you
observe different behaviour, please file a new bug and attach the output
of "pactl list".

[Bug 411688]

2019-01-02 Thread Piotr Gorski
All problems with RTP module flooding network, Wifi are caused by lack
of IGMP support in rtp_send module.

When pulseaudio with rtp_recv module is started proper IGMPv2 signalling
works like it should:

root@orangepione:~# tshark -i eth0 -Y "igmp"
Capturing on 'eth0'
117 6.950723148 192.168.254.141 -> 239.255.1.56 IGMPv2 46 Membership Report
group 239.255.1.56
177 10.430705605 192.168.254.141 -> 239.255.1.56 IGMPv2 46 Membership Report
group 239.255.1.56
215 13.660683494 192.168.254.141 -> 239.255.1.56 IGMPv2 46 Membership Report
group 239.255.1.56

Pulseaudio creates Multicast group (I don't use default group). As IGMP
signalling is OK - IGMP capable switches enable that multicast group
only on ports that need it.

If pulseaudio is configured with rtp_send module - there is no IGMP
signalling.

Looking at code of module-rtp-recv.c we can find:

mr4.imr_multiaddr = ((const struct sockaddr_in*) sa)->sin_addr;
r = setsockopt(fd, IPPROTO_IP, IP_ADD_MEMBERSHIP, &mr4,
sizeof(mr4));

IP_ADD_MEMBERSHIP tells kernel to join multicast group.

There is no such command is module-rtp-send.c

It needs fixing ASAP

[Bug 411688]

2019-01-02 Thread Tanu Kaskinen
I read through the comments, and to me it looks like module-rtp-send
doesn't have any flooding bug. The data rate of PCM audio is what it is,
and the network hardware isn't always able to handle it. Multicast RTP
is not enabled by default. If the user enables it, I don't know what we
could possibly do to not "flood" the network.

Since this is a common problem for people, there is certainly room for
improvement in the UI and documentation so that users don't get so
surprised when things don't work.

Adding to my previous comment: it could be argued that the bug is that
we transmit PCM audio instead of compressed audio. Adding support for
compressed audio should help with the network stress. Does anyone
volunteer to implement this?

To my knowledge RTP can carry pretty much any format. You said on the
mailing list that you want to use Kodi to receive the stream, and I
don't know what Kodi supports, but I would guess that it supports many
formats.

Don't get too excited about compressed audio, though. I'm not
volunteering to implement it, and it's probably pretty complicated to
integrate to PulseAudio.

In case someone is willing to take this task, the current "plan" (if you
can call it a plan - it's all very fuzzy at the moment) is to use
gstreamer to deal with the codecs, but in any case, please bring this
topic up on the mailing list before spending too much time implementing
it, so that there's an agreement about the design.

[Bug 411688]

2019-01-02 Thread TB2
I know nothing about RTP, but from a user perspective, I have two questions:
 1) Transferring a WAV file over the network goes faster than real time (in
terms of the audio contained within). Why should the network struggle with
uncompressed RTP audio, then?
 2) Why are packets generated when nothing is played? If there is no audio
activity in PA, there is no need to send any packets.
Apologies if this doesn't make sense, I'm talking purely as an end-user.

I've also noticed this in the most up to data pulse versions from
archlinux. I also cannot use a ttl of 1, as the router does not decrease
the value when routing into wlan, as it has the same subnet. Neither
does destination ip 24.0.0.1 help. From my side I have no chance to
change the router config, because the internet is provided by someone
else.

What works for me though is to stream the music directly to the
destination via destination_ip=192.168.178.x

I could also add a menu in paprefs that'd also adress the ip directly,
however this is more of a struggle because of the old gtk2 (if anyone
here is following the mailing list). It would be highly appreciated to
fix this bug in the module itself and reduce the payload somehow.

I noticed the same bug in my system ( Ubuntu 14.04.5) while I was trying to set
up pulseaudio server in Windows 10 over the local network. In my case network
flooding occurs whenever I launch pavucontrol, upload traffics reaches up to
200kb/s and it reduced the local network unusable. When I close it the network
attack diminishes.
I added `unload-module module-rtp-send` into `/etc/pulse/default.pa` to
workaround the bug.

[Bug 1809156] Re: E1000 guest to host escape

2019-01-02 Thread Seth Arnold
Thanks Martin; someone will probably give this a good look next week. In
the meantime, I noticed that the patch doesn't indicate who authored the
patch or where it came from -- could you amend the debdiff to include an
URL where the upstream patch could be compared? (Best is to use the
dep-3 tags: https://dep-team.pages.debian.net/deps/dep3/ )

Thanks

[Bug 1752091] Re: gvfsd-metadata[1703]: g_udev_device_has_property: assertion 'G_UDEV_IS_DEVICE (device)' failed

2019-01-02 Thread A. Denton
I can confirm the problem on my system:

gvfsd-metadata[PID]: g_udev_device_has_property: assertion 'G_UDEV_IS_DEVICE
(device)' failed
(hundrets of entries ...)

As a temporary workaround I killed (only) the gvfsd-metadata process (will
auto-respawan, unless changed in systemd) and erased the local gfvs-metadata
directory (will be recreated with a file in it):

$ sudo pkill gvfsd-metadata
$ rm -rf ~/.local/share/gvfs-metadata

After that the logs disappeared from my system.

Removing removing its binary /usr/libexec/gvfsd-metadata however is not
a good practice, since it may lock up your system.

As a better alternative I tried to change /usr/share/dbus-1/session.conf
like this (right before the directive/tag):

and changed /usr/lib/gvfs/gvfsd-metadata via:
$ sudo chmod 000 /usr/lib/gvfs/gvfsd-metadata

Unfortunately though this led to further problems and a lock-up, not
allowing to open further applications like the Thunar file explorer:

systemd[PID]: gvfs-metadata.service: Failed to execute command: Permission
denied
systemd[PID]: gvfs-metadata.service: Failed at step EXEC spawning
/usr/lib/gvfs/gvfsd-metadata: Permission denied

Maybe just the D-Bus rule would have been enough?

It's turning on only for a sec and shutting down right away.

I have tried to solve the issue with different technics following ubuntu

[Bug 1810354] [NEW] non-idiomatic date/time display for Chinese language

2019-01-02 Thread Shannon
Public bug reported:

On the top panel, the date/time info are displayed as:

四 1月3 09:38

It should be displayed as:

星期四 1月3日 09:38

If I switch off the date part, it is correct:

星期四 09:38

Is it because of the width limitation of date/time widget, or something
wrong with i18n?

[Bug 1809156] [NEW] E1000 guest to host escape

2019-01-02 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

You have been subscribed to a public security bug by Seth Arnold (seth-arnold):

Looks like VirtualBox <=5.2.20 is vulnerable:

https://github.com/MorteNoir1/virtualbox_e1000_0day

I'm not a security expert but this looks serious to me. cosmic is still
shipping 5.2.18. Are there any plans to upgrade to 5.2.22 or patch this?

According to my understanding the following patch fixes the issue:

https://www.virtualbox.org/changeset/75330/vbox

Have you considered adding this to the patch queue? Let me know if you
want me to prepare a MR.

P.S.: Although this is all over the Internet it seems like Oracle is
keeping this quiet [1]. No hint that this commit fixes a security issue,
no mention in the change log [2]. As far as I can tell not even a CVE
number has been assigned.

14.04 LTS to 16.04 LTS that might not have gone well.

At this point you may have better luck untangling your system via
#ubuntu on irc.freenode.net or http://askubuntu.com.

[Bug 1804554] Re: 18.10: lubuntu sddm crashes with openbox session

2019-01-02 Thread Boruch Baum
@Lucas: Welcome to the world of Linux... When I originally reported this
bug, here[1], I also reported how to recover from it without needing to
disconnect the power. For any operating system, disconnecting the power
is undesirable; one of the advantages of Linux is that there is often a
way to recover gracefully without losing your work and possibly damaging
your file system. Unfortunately, learning all the techniques isn't easy.

In this case, I found that for me it was possible to gracefully recover
the system by "switching to another linux virtual terminal" (eg. press
Ctrl+Alt+F2), logging into to a text session, and restarting the sddm
service ('systemctl restart sddm.service'). Since you're a new user to
linux, you may want to consider giving it a try. For the long term, the
thing to remember is that one option for you to try to recover a system
is the basic technique: switch to another virtual terminal, log in, and
start examining / fixing things.

[Bug 1309535] Re: Running without pam-kwallet installed issues a warning in auth.log

The lines were created during logins, i.e. initial logins or after
locking the screen (xflock4) and unlocking it again.

The workaround I used was to change /etc/pam.d/lightdm and /etc/pam.d
/lightdm-greeter and comment out (#) the following lines (in both
files):

#authoptionalpam_kwallet.so
#authoptionalpam_kwallet5.so
...
#session optionalpam_kwallet.so auto_start
#session optionalpam_kwallet5.so auto_start

So far the systemd log is clear of those loglines. A different
workaround would be to simply install the KDE component.

[Bug 1810351] [NEW] journalctl fails to work inside systemd service

2019-01-02 Thread Edward Gow
Public bug reported:

Using

Ubuntu 16.04.4 LTS

and

Package: systemd
Architecture: amd64
Version: 229-4ubuntu21.10
Multi-Arch: foreign
Priority: required
Section: admin
Origin: Ubuntu

The journalctl(1) command cannot be used in a systemd OnFailure service
to get error logs. To replicate the issue

1) Create a service unit

[Unit]
Description=%n

[Service]
#ExecStart=/bin/sh -xv -c 'systemctl --user status -o cat -n 20 |
mail -s "Unit failed" '
ExecStart=/bin/sh -c 'journalctl --user-unit= -o verbose -q -n 20 |
mail -s "Unit failed" '

2) enable the unit

3) start the unit

You will get a failure message from journalctl and mail of

sh[28225]: No journal files were opened due to insufficient permissions.
sh[28225]: mail: Null message body; hope that's ok

4) switch the comment # to the journalctl ExecStart and uncomment the
systemctl ExecStart line

>From systemctl you will get journal output in the email.

The man page for systemctl states "In addition, journalctl --unit=NAME
or journalctl --user-unit=NAME use a similar filter for messages and
might be more convenient." and indeed it would if it worked properly.

[Bug 1805079] Re: click/pop noise in the headphone on several lenovo laptops

2019-01-02 Thread James Thorne
I am using an X1 Carbon Gen 6 (BIOS 1.31) with Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS, and I
too experience the popping sounds in the left-channel of my headphones
(this does not occur when connecting the same headphones with a 3.5mm-
to-USB-C adapter to the second USB-C port).

Other than that issue, audio through the headphones sounds great and can
get very loud (I typically cannot go above 58%), but audio through the
speakers can get tinny/distorted and is quiet at 100%. I believe this is
a known issue with the X1 Carbon's speakers and is probably unrelated to
the issue at hand, but I thought it is worth mentioning since there is
discussion in this thread about using the speaker's DAC for the
headphones instead of the headphone's DAC.

I applied the changes mentioned here [1], and the popping sounds in the
left-channel of my headphones appear to have stopped. I have been using
this video [2] to test before and after the changes due to its wide
range of audio and vocals (quiet, normal, and loud moments).

[Bug 1810226] Re: With "--gpu-api=vulkan", MPV complains that it cannot find SPIRV, despite spirv-tools being installed

2019-01-02 Thread James Cowgill
Slightly related to this - I notice libplacebo gained support for
glslang[1]. Copying that has the advantage that glslang is already
packaged.

2019-01-02 Thread Daniel
I didn't log this bug but i have the same issue on my geo book 3 same
HTIX touchpad. Tested it today on mainline 4.20 and it did not fix the
issue. I also have kworker consuming 100% CPU and when i echo "disable"
> /sys/firmware/acpi/interrupts/gpe03 the CPU drops and the touchpad
response gets noticeibly worse. This is connsistent every time i disable
that interrupt.

Pretty sure its the same issue so just wnated to add this information.

[Bug 1810346] [NEW] VLC interface not displayed correctly

2019-01-02 Thread FalCT60
Public bug reported:

I use vlc on a Dell E-5530 laptop seated on its docking station.
The laptop display cover is closed, the output is sent on an external LG TV
with 1920x1080.
This system has been working flawlessly for many years, resp. under late 14.04
and 16.04.
After recently upgrading to 18.04, I noticed VLC wouldn't display correctly -
see attachment.
This only occurs on the external display ; if I open the cover and use the
internal display, there is no problem - except I cannot work on the internal
display.
regards,
J.-Luc
