The correct "free" drivers come built into Ubuntu automatically.

If you install unofficial drivers like
"https://launchpad.net/~oibaf/+archive/ubuntu/graphics-drivers; then we
cannot help you.

Yes, please remove both of those from your system and follow the steps
in comment #3. The drivers you installed seem to be causing problems so

[Bug 1812359] Re: Cannot install Ubuntu 18.04 in Intel Atom D425

2019-01-28 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks.

There are two points of interest in that log I can see:

Jan 29 09:45:01 test /usr/lib/gdm3/gdm-x-session[656]: (II) intel(0): resizing
framebuffer to 2732x768
Jan 29 09:45:01 test /usr/lib/gdm3/gdm-x-session[656]: (II) intel(0): switch to
mode 1366x768@60.4 on LVDS1 using pipe 1, position (0, 0), rotation normal,
reflection none
Jan 29 09:45:02 test /usr/lib/gdm3/gdm-x-session[656]: (II) intel(0): switch to
mode 1366x768@59.8 on VGA1 using pipe 0, position (1366, 0), rotation normal,
reflection none

and

Jan 29 09:45:51 test gnome-shell[931]: Skipping layers 1..n of your
pipeline since the first layer is sliced. We don't currently support any
multi-texturing with sliced textures but assume layer 0 is the most
important to keep

Both of these suggest the problem is that gnome-shell is trying and
failing to render across two screens (2732x768) because the code that's
meant to handle that for older GPUs like this is not well tested (no
developers use that kind of hardware).

As a workaround
~~~
Please just unplug your second monitor and leave it unplugged. The system
should work fine with just a single monitor. In fact, please reinstall again
without ever plugging in that second monitor and everything should just work.
As a permanent fix
~~
I think this is probably one of the bugs that Gert van der Kraats has been
working on recently: bug 1790525 or bug 1795774. The fix for those has only
been in 19.04 for a couple of days so please try live booting 19.04
(http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/) and tell us if that seems to
fix the problem.
Its' reproducible on AMD Ryzen APU's as well. Can the priority of this
be bumped up and someone fix it. This is a basic feature which every
Linux distro has.
[Bug 1813701] Re: [amdgpu] Flickering graphics corruption in kernel 4.18.0-13.14-generic 4.18.17 (but none observed in kernel 4.18.0-10)
2019-01-28 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Oh, it appears you have at least one unsupported PPA installed that has
replaced some graphics packages:
version.libdrm2: libdrm2 2.4.97+git1901221830.b7a7a9~oibaf~c
version.libgl1-mesa-dri: libgl1-mesa-dri 19.0~git1901280730.d1d2bb~oibaf~c
Please:
1. Remove that PPA from the system using 'ppa-purge'.
2. Reboot.
3. If the problem still occurs then run:
   dpkg -l > allpackages,txt
   and send us the file 'allpackages.txt'.
[Bug 1745900] Re: [Bug][KVM][Crystal Ridge] Lack of data persistence guarantee of QEMU writes to host PMEM
2019-01-28 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
Hi,
The qemu code is in Ubuntu 19.04 as we are on qemu 3.1 (in proposed atm, but
soon in proper 19.04.
What is missing is to pass the MIR for the pmem library in bug 1790856 that I
referenced in comment #9.
If you want/need this feature for qemu you'd want to track and help driving
that MIR bug.
Once that is aaccepteble to be in Main [1]. Last time I checked there it still
ahd a lot of churn for the upstream project still having a lot of experimental
bits and huge changes each release, as well as some differences between
Debian/Ubuntu that made it loose some packaging improvements we have.
TL;DR - Qemu is ok in terms of code, to enable it the MIR for libpmem
must pass.
2019-01-28 Thread Daniel van Vugt
It looks like a problem with the Xorg graphics driver:
[44.332] (EE) amdgpu: module ABI major version (23) doesn't match the
server's version (24)
[44.332] (EE) Failed to load module "amdgpu" (module requirement mismatch,
0)
so your system then falls back to using the 'modeset' Xorg driver with
the 'amdgpu' kernel driver.
To get rid of the problem, I tried to install the amdgpu-pro driver
18.50, but it is supported only in ubuntu 18.04. Then I installed the
free driver https://launchpad.net/~oibaf/+archive/ubuntu/graphics-
[Bug 1792085] Re: MTP not working/very slow on Bionic
2019-01-28 Thread Yuriy Vidineev
Same/similar issue here.
Ubuntu 16.04 + Samsung Galaxy Note 8 - works
Ubuntu 18.04 + Samsung Galaxy Note 8 - doesn't: very slow, lost devices.
Completely impossible to move photos via MTP
KDE Neon 18.04 - doesn't works as well
I think that it's something with mtp-tools/libmtp
For me only one reliable way to transfer photos via MTP - Android File
Transfer for Linux https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2017/11/android-file-
transfer-app-linux
** Also affects: libmtp
Also, please allow the system at least 15 minutes to boot before giving
up. There might be something slowing it down dramatically making it look
like it's hung when it's not. If that's true then we need to see it all
in the log.
[Bug 1812359] Re: Cannot install Ubuntu 18.04 in Intel Atom D425
2019-01-28 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks but you seem to have made the same mistake again. That log is
from recovery mode so is not useful:
Jan 29 09:40:28 test kernel: Command line:
BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-4.15.0-44-generic root=UUID=1b38a9ba-
d9c9-4b85-a152-b5f2cbc9aa98 ro recovery nomodeset
Using 'nomodeset' is a workaround, and one that will prevent normal
graphics modes from working. So use it when you must, but if you do need
it then that indicates a bug somewhere (this bug).
Now that you have debugging enabled, please repeat the steps in comment
#11 and be careful to not send any logs that mention "recovery
nomodeset" at the top.
[Bug 1797872] Re: ntpd keeps Soliciting pool server
2019-01-28 Thread Ian Brown
I just wanted to chime in here as I was having the exact same problem.
Turned out to be because of some configuration changes I made to
ntp.conf in an attempt to prevent ntpd from listening on any of my
network interfaces (security paranoid):
interface ignore wildcard
interface listen 127.0.0.1
Apparently ntpd also uses these settings for outgoing connection
attempts too.
[Bug 1811093] Re: Bogus "Out of Memory" compiz invoked oom-killer
2019-01-28 Thread Craig
No oom-killer event with v5.0 kernel.
Linux version 5.0.0-05rc1-generic (kernel@tangerine) (gcc version 8.2.0
(Ubuntu 8.2.0-12ubuntu1)) #201901062130 SMP Mon Jan 7 02:32:47 UTC 2019
Possible explanations:
Scenario #1) There was a kernel bug and it is fixed in v5.0. Or,
Scenario #2) Compiz requests a large chunk of memory in certain
situations that did not occur when testing with the v5.0 kernel. All
of the oom-killer events here were compiz.  They may not have occurred
when testing with the v5.0 kernel either because testing was limited
in duration, or because of differences between the testing environment
and the production environment.  Our testing with the v5.0 kernel was
done at 800x600 resolution, no proprietary graphics driver.  The
oom-killer events described in this bug report occurred at 1920 x 1080
resolution with proprietary nvidia graphics driver. There may or may
not be a kernel bug and it may or may not be fixed in v5.0.
Moving forward we will most likely switch production to open source
nouveau graphics driver and/or Xenial LTS HWE and/or fully upgrade to
18.04.1 Bionic.
I am going to leave this bug marked "Incomplete" due to the
differences between our v5.0 kernel test environment and our
production environment.
Attached are some notes that will be useful to me if I ever come back
here.
Okay, I did normal boot, no login screen, could not entered into VT, so
with telnet, I did journalctl -b-1 > boot2.txt
I still request only if you haven't consider comment #29
Please do. As I said, I've set nomodeset to install Ubuntu, without it I
could not.
[Bug 1813385] Re: Pressing Super+1..9 should switch to the last used window of the application
2019-01-28 Thread Daniel van Vugt
** Changed in: gnome-shell (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided => Wishlist
** Description changed:
+ https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/issues/937
+
+ ---
+
  In my daily work, I save a lot of time[1] by using Super+1...9 to switch
  to windows.
  When an application has more than one window (you see 1+ dots next to
  its icon in the task bar), and the user presses Super+N, Unity would
  switch to the last used window of the application. This was great,
  because users typically switch more often between the same two apps,
  e.g. an IDE and a browser window for web app development, or a browser
  window and another app for data input etc.
  GNOME on the other hand, does not switch to the last used among the
  windows when you press Super+N. It forces you to pick one of the
  windows, every single time. Screenshot:
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-
  shell/uploads/9f1cd1e982b051147390466b4a6a3621/image.png
  If you have multiple windows per app (very common with browsers in
  productivity scenarios), this negates the speed advantage of switching
  via Super + numbers in the first place. You have to navigate with the
  arrow keys (the mouse is out of the question if you care about speed),
  then press Enter. Also, pressing Num Enter doesn't do anything.
  Can there please be an option to enable simply switching to the last
  used window of that application?
Please generate a new log as the one in comment #27 is showing it's from
One shows 'upower' using 100% CPU and another shows 'kworker/6:0-events'
