[Bug 1804841] Re: iwlwifi Microcode SW error detected. Restarting 0x2000000.

2019-02-07 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
Oh I can tell what it was, I still use the most up-to-date-from-git
version of the firmware from [1]. The testing back then wasn't
successful, but I'm reluctant to go back to the base version as I'm
afraid the error strikes me at some odd point when I really need
wireless.

If anyone else is affected and could try if the PPA fixes it for him as
well that might be helpful.

[Bug 1815133] Re: can't install kubuntu-desktop

2019-02-07 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
HI Lech,
the situation you described is in upcoming Ubuntu 19.04

But in the meantime libsensors4 is not more published there (this was a
library transition with Debian bug #915873 being an issue. This was
finalized and fixed by [1]

I tested in a container and can install kubuntu-desktop just fine.

Furthermore there are no dependencies to libsensors4 (which was a
requirement to remove it from the archive anyway).

$ reverse-depends libsensors4 -r disco
reverse-depends: Error: Package not published in specified release

[Bug 1815163] [NEW] Lubuntu 18.04.2 qa-test - pop ups hard to read without borders

2019-02-07 Thread Chris Guiver
Public bug reported:

Lubuntu 18.04.2 QA-test install (something-else)

During partitioning, with the "Something else" visible & a list of my
disk partitions, windows are opening top left of screen, they are
borderless and it looks as if part of the window is off-screen, which
seems confirmed when I open the "do not use this partition" list-box to
select "ext4" and the positioning on the list is at the bottom going up
off screen... this is not ideal, and not when I raised this bug.

I've now selected all partitions and clicked "install now" and it stops.

in the middle of the white-background borderless "Something else" window
showing the table of my partitions, a borderless window is there asking
me

"If you continue, the changes listed below will be written to the disks.
Otherwise, you will be able to make further changes manually. \n The
following partitions are going to be formatted: ..."

This is white (or near-white) background drawn on the white background
of the Something-else table of my disk partitions & thus near invisible.

This does NOT affect usability, but it COULD cause people to wait as
they clicked INSTALL NOW & the borderless window is asking them a
question, that would be very easy to miss.

The font used in the question I think is smaller, or slightly different,
but color of the question (continue, go back) is very-similar to the
table of my partitions & device.for.boot.loader.installation.

The lack of borders on the window is I believe the missing issue (though
pop-up boxes a different color background may also resolve this issue).

This is a COSMETIC issue only.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1814555 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1814555

When I booted Kubuntu, the hard drive light flashed a few times, but
otherwise nothing happened; just a black screen. Had to push the
hardware restart button to get going again. Next boot I selected
advanced options and the previous (4.18.0-13) kernel, and all started
normally. I've uninstalled 4.18.0.14 until the bug is fixed.

[Bug 308952]

2019-02-07 Thread Patrick McManus
We are in a period where ftp is clearly deprecated and in general,
making changes to the code is riskier than letting it ride unless there
is a patch and reviewer available to make a good judgment about it. So
I'm going to wontfix ftp bugs related to enhancements, interop errors,
etc.. We will be better off putting our energy into including a
different js based ftp stack.

The cifs kernel module currently is currently disregarding the nt_status
USER_SESSION_DELETED packets sent to it from remote SMB2+ peers and is
subsequently holding onto clearly dead SMB2+ sessions as a result.

This is causing issues as it appears that the kernel only reconnects
after a delay period, during which time all IO to that network share
(with that session id) results in an I/O error for the user; all the
while the kernel is repeatedly resubmitting the requests in the
background with the server just responding to each of them with the same
error.

This is contrasting to the behaviour on Windows clients - whereby if the
response the client gets is USER_SESSION_DELETED, it will immediately
dump that session and reconnect - transparently to the user.

This causes massive issues multiuser mounts (as is the case for me), as
if a users SMB session is deleted by the server for any reason, that
user essentially loses all access to that share for extended periods,
until the cifs module sees fit to treat that session as dead and
renegotiate or an admin intervenes.

Reproducing the issue is easily done, establish an SMB2+ mount to a
Windows Server machine, open any directory on client to establish a
session, then simply terminate that SMB session from the servers MMC
console, if you then try and run any queries against that mountpoint on
the client you will just end up with a string of I/O errors because its
trying to use a session id which is dead.

For reference I'm testing using the following mount options:
vers=3.02,multiuser,sec=ntlmsspi,file_mode=0750,dir_mode=0755,cache=none,credentials=/etc/smb.credentials.conf

Kernels 4.4 and 4.10 have extended delays until the user is able to
regain access to the mountpoint, the latest rc has cut that down
significantly and its only a few minutes, but even still if the session
has been deleted by the server the client should at least attempt to
reconnect and then resubmit the last command, rather than continue to
submit packets with dead session ID's and return I/O to the user.

CIFS: 511c54a2f69195b28afb9dd119f03787b1625bb4 adds a check for session
expiry, status STATUS_NETWORK_SESSION_EXPIRED, however the server can also
respond with STATUS_USER_SESSION_DELETED in cases where the session has been
idle for some time and the server reaps the session to recover resources.

Handle this additional status in the same way as SESSION_EXPIRED.

[Bug 1815152] Re: kernel hangs on boot after "fb: switching to inteldrmfb from VESA VGA"

2019-02-07 Thread Greg Ward
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected cosmic

** Description changed:

A few days ago, I let update-manager upgrade my kernel from 4.18.0-13 to
4.18.0-14. Since then, my system is unable to boot. It freezes after
  printing

fb: switching to inteldrmfb from VESA VGA

but before it gets around to asking me the passphrase for my encrypted
main partition. (At first I thought it was a problem with cryptsetup
because it never got to that prompt, but now I'm pretty sure it's
something to do with changing video mode.)

However, if I use the grub menu to select the older 4.18.0-13, the
system boots just fine. It looks very much like a bug introduced between
  4.18.0-13 and 4.18.0-14.

Additionally, if I boot 4.18.0-14 in maintenance mode, the kernel
modesetting does not happen, and the system boots just fine. (Except for
the 1980s-style low-res video, that is.) This seems like good evidence
that it's a problem with setting the video mode.

- I'll test with some mainline builds, but I want to get this bug report
- opened before I start rebooting.

[Bug 1815152] Re: kernel hangs on boot after "fb: switching to inteldrmfb from VESA VGA"

2019-02-07 Thread Greg Ward
Results with mainline kernels:

* linux-image-unsigned-4.18.20-041820-generic: bug present, same behaviour as
in linux-image-4.18.0-14-generic
* linux-image-unsigned-4.20.7-042007-generic: bug fixed!

One other interesting factoid: after the failed modeset, the system
isn't _completely_ dead. I can type in my passphrase for my encrypted
partition, and after another 10-12 s (the usual delay) the system is
ping'able and ssh'able. So stuff is up and running. But here's what does
not work:

  * software reboot from console (Ctrl-Alt-F1, then Ctrl-Alt-Del)
  * "sudo reboot" from ssh session
  * "sudo poweroff" from ssh session

The only ways I can regain control are the PC reset button or hardware
power off.

This is still bad.

I all liked the 3 shortcuts. Bring them back. There was no reason to

[Bug 1815152] [NEW] kernel hangs on boot after "fb: switching to inteldrmfb from VESA VGA"

2019-02-07 Thread Greg Ward
Public bug reported:

I'll test with some mainline builds, but I want to get this bug report
opened before I start rebooting.

** Affects: plymouth (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

I tried to `do-release-upgrade -p` a x86 box (18.04) and failed

Upgrades from 18.04 on the i386 architecture are not supported at this time."

this result is probably expected (& unrelated); but I'm noting here in-
case it's an issue.

[Bug 1447664] Re: 14e4:1687 broadcom tg3 network driver disconnects under high load

2019-02-07 Thread James Johnson
I have been experiencing this issue on an HP 745 G4 with the same BCM
5762 on several kernel versions from ubuntu 16.04 and up to 4.15.0-45.
On my system the network would immediately crash often before logging
in. Occasionally I would be able to ping for several seconds before the
device would crash.

I have tried several work arounds in this thread although none were
successful. Setting iommu to soft may have increase the duration from 10
seconds to about 30 however I did not test this extensively.

I was able to upgrade to mainline kernel 4.20.7-042007 using uuku, and I
no longer experience any device instability. I'm not sure if this
specific patch was included in this release although it maybe useful for
those still experiencing crashes on Ubuntu 18.04

Ever since updating to 4.12.10, I have been getting "File name too long"
messages when accessing my CIFS share:

On my system, the CIFS share is mounted on /nfs/users. (An NFS export
was transitioned to CIFS a while back, hence the oddly named mount
point.)

This issue goes away if I revert to 4.12.8. Commit d3edede looks
relevant.

Can you attach a network trace including the initial mount, i.e. the query
calls where cifs.ko will discover what the maximum length the server supports
during the mount.

The issue persists with 4.12.12, which includes

What fileserver are you using? Windows or Samba? And what version.
Can you try using the same kernel and try accessing a different share on a
different file server to see if things are different.
