[Bug 1815562] [NEW] BIOS boot sequence changed by update

2019-02-11 Thread Søren Bredlund Caspersen
Public bug reported:

During the two last updates my boot-order has been changed.

I dual-boot windows and ubuntu on my secure-boot laptop.

This is a work-laptop, and I need it to boot windows first, so that is the
setup i have chosen in the bios.
When I need Ubuntu, I manually choose that option when booting.
I don't think the ubuntu update should change boot-order in the bios, to put
Ubuntu first.

[Bug 1758736] Re: [USB-Audio - SteelSeries Arctis 7, playback] No stereo playback only mono playback

2019-02-11 Thread Dave Chiluk
** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+
+ * User is only able to get mono audio from steelseries headsets because
+ they provide both a stereo and mono output. PA selects the mono output
+ by default.
+
+ * This should be backported to stable releases because this fix is
+isolated to code that only applies to the affected headsets.
+Additionally other gaming headsets may be more easily enabled by adding
+ ATTRS{idVendor}=="", ATTRS{idProduct}=="",
ENV{PULSE_PROFILE_SET}="steelseries-arctis-7-usb-audio.conf"
+to /lib/udev/rules.d/90-pulseaudio.rules now. Such as the Lucidsound
+LS31 which I own.
+
+ * The upload fixes the bug by conditionally setting a pulseaudio
+ profile for the headset based on specific usb vendor and product ids in
+ the udev rules.
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ 1. Acquire headset.
+ 2. Open sound settings, and click test speakers.
+ 3. Only option available will be mono sound
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ * Risk of regressions should be mitigated to those who own the headset.
+ In which case it is likely that their headset is already not working.
+
+ [Other Info]
+
+ * All patches originate from upstream pulseaudio, and are documented as
+such including the shas.
+
+ * I will be pursuing enabling other similar headsets in the coming weeks.
+ * I plan to work with upstream pulseaudio to enable my own headset and to
+also make the headset templates backported here more generic.
+
+
+ Original Description -
+
There is not stereo playback only mono playback

I uploaded test packages for cosmic and disco to my ppa today. If
someone with the headset could test either of those as well that would
be awesome. I should be getting a headset here soon to test with.

The recommendations are based on a few assumptions that don't apply to all
machines.
So, hitting OOM in this case is not surprising in that sense. As increasing
crashkernel
value helped, we can consider the original issue reported here resolved..

Description:
I use LibreOffice mostly on Xubuntu.

When I have multiple .txt files on the command line and start
libreoffice writer, it adds (many) blank pages to the documents. These
blanks contain nothing at all and I have not figured out how to remove
them. But they are included when I print them.

I'm attaching a file on which this happens. It contains an anonymized
fragment of the original, repeated a number of times. I suggest you
create two copies, called perhaps junk1.txt and junk2.txt.

I use the command "soffice junk*" to load them into the writer, and I
get the extra blank pages.

If, however, I just do soffice junk1.txt, I get a document of the
correct size.

I can do that of course, but it is still an annoying and inconvenient
error for my workflow.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Create 2 copies of attached file (text file) called junk1.txt and junk2.txt
2. Use bash command "soffice junk*.txt"
3. Note extra pages

Actual Results:
Loaded file has extra blank pages at the end.

Expected Results:
No extra stuff at all

Reproducible: Always

I have built a bionic test kernel with those fixes (+2 others needed for
backporting) for testing.

The kernel can be found at:

@Sujith Pandel can you please confirm of this kernel fixes the problem
or not?

Thanks.

Using Firefox to create a PDF of a web page, all hyperlinks are lost.
The same process in Safari results in all hyperlinks being retained in
the saved PDF file.

Though it may relate to the PDF plug-in issue, I could not find specific
reference to this in prior bug reports.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.File > Print > PDF > Save as PDF.
2. View using Preview (default).
3. (Tried also viewing the same PDF files on a PC using Acrobat reader.)

Actual Results:
PDF file does not retain hyperlinks.

Expected Results:
PDF file should retain hyperlinks.

I can confirm this (that the hyperlinks are preserved in Safari but

The same thing happens printing to a PDF file on Linux -- so this is
presumably a cross-platform problem.

The hyperlinks aren't preserved printing to PDF from FF2, so this
isn't a regression.

The hyperlinks aren't preserved printing to a PDF file in Opera, but
they are in another WebKit browser (Shiira). So there may be some
clues how to do this (preserve the hyperlinks) in WebKit source code.

I argue that this is an enhancement request, not a bug. You can't
hyperlink a bit of ink on a piece of paper, so it's not surprising that
when an application renders a document for printing it doesn't put
hyperlinks in it. Putting hyperlinks in a PDF file is thus outside the
scope of printing, and something that we can choose to add as an
enhancement.

On the other hand, if we had a specific feature to save a web page as a
PDF (requested in bug 162659), then how this behaves would be another
matter.

Nobody.

Printing, as a concept, is putting ink onto paper or a similar medium.
If a particular OS has PDF output built into its printing facility, or
the computer has on it a printer driver for generating PDF files, then
normally the content of the PDF generated thereby will be the same as
the content of the paper document t

2019-02-11 Thread Alan Diggs
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

In Ubuntu 18.10 and beyond, the desktop is quite laggy and choppy, to
the point where moving windows around the screen appears to be a stop-
motion at 5FPS or so. Mouse movement is choppy, animations are
grindingly slow, and this overall slowness does seem to affect text
input into GUI dialogs (missed keys, etc). However, performance is fine
in TTY, even with more active programs like HTOP and full-screen text
images like NCURSES looking stuff. This issue wasn't present in
18.04(.1) but could be triggered by using a newer kernel or updating the
MESA stack. I'm using a STRIX Vega 64 for my GPU and I've installed
Ubuntu 19.04 and only run updates and installed inxi and lm-sensors so I
can provide more data if possible. (EDIT: Would also like to note that
CPU usage is pretty low, and there's nothing pinning the CPU or spiking
it from time to time. I believe this is solely graphical, but I am *not*
  100% certain at any rate.)

[Bug 1815534] Re: Cannot login on a "real" console (ctrl+alt+f2)

2019-02-11 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1815534/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 1799855] Re: distribution upgrade bug - upgrading to 18.10

2019-02-11 Thread Dan Simmons
I installed a fresh Lubuntu 18.04 system in a virtual machine, I set
"Prompt=normal" in /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades, then ran `do-
release-upgrade -p`. I followed the normal upgrade prompts, selected
SDDM. The upgrader prompted me to restart and after restart the SDDM
login screen appeared. After I logged in the LXQt desktop environment
started. I did not receive any errors throughout the process.

After the update here is the following for lsb_release and uname:

[Bug 1815510] Re: System lag/stuttering, mouse movement and window drag choppiness with Vega 64

2019-02-11 Thread Alan Diggs
Was told to include a package name. Though it's quite difficult to
actually narrow down a specific *package* that causes this issue, the
linked wiki document suggests 'linux' if I'm filing this against the
kernel, which I guess I am as versions with older kernels are alright.

[Bug 1815258] Re: 4.18.0-14-generic unbootable on Toshiba

2019-02-11 Thread shanen (Shannon Jacobs)
Okay, after the latest update (from the 0-13 kernel) it now seems to be
booting normally. I hope that means the problem has been corrected and
this bug can be closed. Perhaps some kind of regression bug?

If anyone over there wants me to collect any additional information
about what was going on, please let me know what you need and how to
collect it. Minimum might be some confirmation if you have a hypothesis
of what got broken and want to make sure you squashed the bug.

P.S. I'd be more enthusiastic if I had a few bucks on the table (for
example, via that imaginary charity share brokerage). I don't really
feel that I have much skin in the game beyond the fuzzy philosophy that
freedom involves choice and Linux is one of the choices I should
understand and consider.

[Bug 1815550] [NEW] RSS grows without limit, general slowness

2019-02-11 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Public bug reported:

This *may* be an nvidia-specific problem, but the RSS of gnome-shell on
my system grows without limit (over a couple of hours it's increased
past 10G).

At the same time, gnome-shell appears to become progressively less
responsive.

Restarting gnome-shell (via restart) drops shell RSS down to
~400MB and improves system responsiveness a bit.

[Bug 1812456] Re: [MIR] libflatpak

2019-02-11 Thread Jeremy Bicha
** Description changed:

  Scope
  =
This MIR is only for libflatpk0 and its related binaries (libflatpak-dev,
libflatpak-doc and gir1.2-flatpak-1.0). The flatpak binary itself and
flatpak-tests will remain in universe.

  Availability

  Built for all supported architectures.

  In sync with Debian.

  Rationale
  =
xdg-desktop-portal 1.1 now uses libflatpak to validate command line options.
The inadequacy of its previous validation was identified during the MIRs for
xdg-desktop-portal and xdg-desktop-portal-gtk.

  https://github.com/flatpak/xdg-desktop-portal/pull/278

gnome-control-center 3.31.4 introduced a new Applications panel. The
original (and preferred) implementation uses libflatpak to provide
additional info about installed Flatpak applications. The implementation
was modified on my request to instead attempt to call "flatpak info" on
the command line instead in an attempt to avoid us needing to MIR
flatpak. The GNOME Control Center developers would prefer if they could
  use libflatpak instead.

  Security

This will need a Security review.

  https://security-tracker.debian.org/tracker/source-package/flatpak

There have been two CVEs, both have been fixed in all supported Ubuntu
  releases.

[Bug 1815528] Re: New upstream microrelease flatpak 1.0.7

2019-02-11 Thread Andrew Hayzen
** Description changed:

This is a request to SRU the latest microrelease of flatpak into bionic
and cosmic. Which is also a security update similar to the runc
  CVE-2019-5736.

  Debian bug https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=922059

  [Impact]

New upstream microrelease of flatpak, which brings security fixes
  similar to the runc CVE-2019-5736.

Bionic is currently at 1.0.6, whereas 1.0.7 is available upstream.
Cosmic is currently at 1.0.6, whereas 1.0.7 is available upstream.

  [Test Case]

As stated in the debian bug there isn't yet an exploit to demonstration
the vulnerability, see the test plan below for testing flatpak itself.

  [Regression Potential]

Flatpak has a test suite, which is run on build across all architectures
  and passes.

There is also a manual test plan
  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Process/Merges/TestPlan/flatpak. I have
confirmed that 1.0.7 passes with this test plan on both bionic and
- cosmic (TODO).
+ cosmic. I have also checked that installing and running an app that uses
+ the apply_extra still functions (and will add this to the test plan in
+ the future).

  Flatpak has autopkgtests enabled
  http://autopkgtest.ubuntu.com/packages/f/flatpak which is passing on
  bionic and cosmic.

Regression potential is low, and upstream is very responsive to any
  issues raised.

  [Other information]

Debian and upstream comments about the vulnerability.

If a user installs a system-wide Flatpak app or runtime that has an
'apply_extra' script, then the apply_extra script is run in a sandbox,
as root, with /proc mounted. A malicious app or runtime could traverse
  /proc/self/exe to modify a host-side executable.

The app or runtime would have to come from a trusted Flatpak
repository (such as Flathub) that was previously added as a system-wide
source of Flatpak apps by a root-equivalent user.

(Non-malicious apply_extra scripts are normally used to process "extra
data" files that had to be downloaded out-of-band, such as the archives
containing the proprietary Nvidia graphics drivers, which the Flathub
maintainers do not believe they are allowed to redistribute directly.)

The fix is to "Don't expose /proc in apply_extra script sandbox."

[Bug 1814069] Re: kernel linux-image-4.15.0-44 not booting on Hyperv Server 2008R2

2019-02-11 Thread Chunk
The original report would have to be gen 1 since Rene is using Win
Server 2008.

My failure is also with gen 1. (I'm using 2012, not 2012 R2, so gen 2
isn't an option for me.)

Since Graham is on 2012 R2, perhaps he can confirm whether his VMs (both
the failed one and the newly-created working one) are gen 1 or 2.

I'm going to close this Won't Fix, but please feel free to reach out to
me if you want to discuss this further. I'm open to pushing for it, if
we can make it work better. Otherwise, will make the Ubuntu variant
actually collect more logs per my 1519 pull request.

[Bug 1815528] Re: New upstream microrelease flatpak 1.0.7

2019-02-11 Thread Andrew Hayzen
** Description changed:

This is a request to SRU the latest microrelease of flatpak into bionic
and cosmic. Which is also a security update similar to the runc
  CVE-2019-5736.

  Debian bug https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=922059

  [Impact]

New upstream microrelease of flatpak, which brings security fixes
  similar to the runc CVE-2019-5736.

Bionic is currently at 1.0.6, whereas 1.0.7 is available upstream.
Cosmic is currently at 1.0.6, whereas 1.0.7 is available upstream.

  [Test Case]

As stated in the debian bug there isn't yet an exploit to demonstration
the vulnerability, see the test plan below for testing flatpak itself.

  [Regression Potential]

Flatpak has a test suite, which is run on build across all architectures
  and passes.

There is also a manual test plan
  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Process/Merges/TestPlan/flatpak. I have
confirmed that 1.0.7 passes with this test plan on both bionic and
  cosmic (TODO).

  Flatpak has autopkgtests enabled
  http://autopkgtest.ubuntu.com/packages/f/flatpak which is passing on
  bionic and cosmic.

Regression potential is low, and upstream is very responsive to any
  issues raised.
+
+ [Other information]
+
+ Debian and upstream comments about the vulnerability.
+
+ If a user installs a system-wide Flatpak app or runtime that has an
+ 'apply_extra' script, then the apply_extra script is run in a sandbox,
+ as root, with /proc mounted. A malicious app or runtime could traverse
+ /proc/self/exe to modify a host-side executable.
+
+ The app or runtime would have to come from a trusted Flatpak
+ repository (such as Flathub) that was previously added as a system-wide
+ source of Flatpak apps by a root-equivalent user.
+
+ (Non-malicious apply_extra scripts are normally used to process "extra
+ data" files that had to be downloaded out-of-band, such as the archives
+ containing the proprietary Nvidia graphics drivers, which the Flathub
+ maintainers do not believe they are allowed to redistribute directly.)
+
+ The fix is to "Don't expose /proc in apply_extra script sandbox."

+ Cosmic is currently at 1.0.6, whereas 1.0.7 is available upstream.
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ As stated in the debian bug there isn't yet an exploit to demonstration
+ the vulnerability, see the test plan below for testing flatpak itself.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ Flatpak has a test suite, which is run on build across all architectures
+ and passes.
+
+ There is also a manual test plan
+ https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Process/Merges/TestPlan/flatpak. I have
+ confirmed that 1.0.7 passes with this test plan on both bionic and
+ cosmic (TODO).
+
+ Flatpak has autopkgtests enabled
+ http://autopkgtest.ubuntu.com/packages/f/flatpak which is passing on
+ bionic and cosmic.
+
+ Regression potential is low, and upstream is very responsive to any
+ issues raised.

- New upstream microrelease flatpak 1.0.X

[Bug 1814997] Re: [MIR] libxmlb

2019-02-11 Thread Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre
MIR looks fine to me; it's a lot of code though, I'd feel much better if
it had more eyes to review. Assigning to the Security Team for a look.

It's also missing a team subscriber, but we'll fix that now.

It doesn't look we do; we've got some kernel-level seccomp filter checks
in place for testing the kernel, but these use prctl(2) directly.

Thanks

[Bug 1640978] Re: [SRU] Backport letsencrypt from bionic

2019-02-11 Thread Brad Warren
> I assume that the patch from 0.22.2-1ubuntu0.1 needs to be included.

Yes, I think this patch should be included. The packages in 18.04
included support Let's Encrypt's newer endpoint, however, this feature
is broken without this patch.

Thanks for catching this. The updated tests now test against the new API
as well.

The other questions here were largely answered in IRC, but to keep this
thread here up-to-date and maybe add a little more context...

> Why is certbot.timer's installation being removed?

I think removing this was a mistake. The current Ubuntu 16.04 package
does not configure automatic renewal, but I think it should be added as
it benefits users and keeps the package closer to the one found in
Bionic.

There's actually a lot of discussion about the addition of automatic
renewal earlier in this thread from a couple years ago.

> Has auto renewal been tested?

I suspect not. At the very least, I hadn't done so.

Previously my test script was almost exclusively running our upstream
tests on the installed packages and did not do much to test things
specifically found in the .deb packages.

For testing automatic renewal, however, the updates to the script I made
last week check:

1. certbot.timer exists and is enabled.
2. /etc/cron.d/certbot exists.

> Why remove the installation of the cli.ini that disables certbot-
internal log rotation?

I think we probably should keep this file unless there is a good reason
not to do so. Why make unnecessary modifications to the packages?

In the current Xenial packages, Certbot is using its own log rotation
provided by the Python standard library. Each run of Certbot creates a
new log file in /var/log/letsencrypt and up to 10 log files are created
after which old log files are deleted.

The cli.ini file in the Bionic package turns off this log rotation
causing Certbot to always append to the same file at
/var/log/letsencrypt/letsencrypt.log with the thinking that this will
better play with programs like logrotate.

[Bug 1815535] [NEW] 16.04 on Dell Precision shuts down during suspend if AC is unplugged

2019-02-11 Thread Simon Kuang
Public bug reported:

My Dell Precision 5510 laptop has recent drivers for graphics. I
installed a lot of updates this week, and I have been finding that the
laptop shuts down in the "Suspend" state if at any point AC power is
unplugged.

Steps to reproduce:
1. With laptop plugged in to AC power and Ubuntu running, use the GUI to enter
the suspend state.
2. With the laptop suspended, unplug AC power.
3. Plug in AC power again.
4. Press the ACPI power button to trigger a wake from suspend.

Expected behavior:
Login screen to resume the pre-suspend session.

Actual behavior:
Laptop goes through POST. During startup, fsck-like text flashes on the screen
indicating that a "hard shutdown" occurred.

What I've done:
(I boot with GRUB from an encrypted LVM partition.) My grub config already has
the "acpi_sleep=nonvs" option from the last time I had a suspend-related issue.
Most online fora will recommend this as a fix, but I am still having these
problems. I even re-ran grub-update just to be sure.

[Bug 1815534] [NEW] Cannot login on a "real" console (ctrl+alt+f2)

2019-02-11 Thread Paulo da Silva
Public bug reported:

My system:
Kubuntu 18.04.2 LTS

Symptoms:

Using a console (ctrl alt f2), I was unable to login, for example as
root (yes I have a password for root) or any other user.

Procedure detailed:

1. ctrl alt f2
The normal login: prompt appears.

2. I type root (or any other user)
Immediately after the the Password: prompt is displayed but it
doesn't wait for me to type anything! It continues with the message
"Login incorrect" and prompts for login again:.
It repeats this "login:" followed by "Login incorrect" several times.
Then it clears the screen and prompts for "login:" and stays there waiting
for input.

3. If I type a user again, the process is repeated!

Further Information:

I searched the net and found that this bug also happened with opensuse and was
fixed.
See please

[Bug 1773184] Re: Starting a KVM guest in a guest (nested VM) crash the kernel

2019-02-11 Thread sean mooney
just adding some more info.
i also deploy openstack rocky on a ubuntu 18.04 host

Linux cloud-5 4.15.0-43-generic #46-Ubuntu SMP Thu Dec 6 14:45:28 UTC
2018 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

with ubuntu 18.04 l1 guest running
Linux numa-migration-1 4.15.0-45-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP Tue Jan 29 16:28:13 UTC
2019 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

and when i lauch a cirros l2 guest i get very similar kvm_intel call
traces.

if i upgrade the l1 guest kernel to the latest linux-virtual-hwe-18.04-edge
kernel
which is currently

Linux numa-migration-2 4.18.0-15-generic #16~18.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Thu Feb
7 14:06:04 UTC 2019 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

i still get the same crashes when i launch the l2 cirros image

i was originally wondering if this was some how related to the gust cpu model

so i tried seting the l1 and l2 guest cpu_mode to host-passthough
to maximies the feature that were availabel tot he guest

i then also tried to limit the l2 guest to the kvm64 cpu-model so that the l2
guest
used the minium set of kvm feature but this did not seam to have an benifical
effect.

the host is useign

Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2697 v2 @ 2.70GHz cpus which i have used in the past
with
ubuntu 16.04 and nested virt without issue so this seams to be related to the
18.04 kenel in some way.

the fact that i am seeing the same issue on a ubuntu 18.04 host with an
18.04 l1 guest

and that gyurco is only seeing this with an 18.04 l1 guest makes me
think that this is likely an issue with kvm in the l1 guests kernel not
the hosts kernel.

im going to try and confrim that with a centos 7 l1 guest tommorow but since i
would like to be
able to do python 3.6/3.7 testing in my local settup i would prefer to use a
Ubuntu 18.04 l1 guest in the long run so i hope this can be resolved.
