@fungi - we accidentally took down 9/12 of the hypervisors in our QA

definitely degraded the capacity significantly

[Bug 1818711] Re: never kills dnsmasq servers

2019-03-05 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
Currently (quite a while actually [3]) the ordering on shutdown is like this:
  libvirtd -> domain -> virt-guest-shutdown.target -> save-restore.service
And as Steve mentioned "save-restore" is to allow to shutdown or save guest
state - and that not only via the default libvirt-guests.service but if wanted
also via other services, therefore the .target in [3].

As you assumed the KillMode [1] of libvirtd is explicitly set to NOT
kill [2] processes as you'd want to start/restart domains (e.g. qemu
processes) and networks (e.g. dnsmasq processes) independently and don't
want to loose them only since you re-started (or even crashed) the
libvirt daemon itself.

Therefore you'd really not want a cgroup cleanup or anything like a
signal handler in libvirtd that cleans up all childs - but nobody here
asked for it anyway so we are fine. Lets discuss how we could clean it
up better on shutdown.

To only take action at the right time we'd need a way to differ between:
- "libvirtd.service is stopping or restarting"
- "the system is shutting down".

That is already done to shutdown/save guests to preserve them in
libvirt-guests.service which - before libvirtd is gone. If it does
nothing or fails it is considered fine that later on that the systemd
killing spree reaps what is left.

To properly remove dnsmasq processes you'd want the equivalent of a "for each
net do virsh net-destroy $net". That would need to be:
- on system shutdown only
- could use similar simple mechanisms like libvirt-guests.service
- would need to be ordered to be on shutdown after libvirt-guests.service (so
guests still have network when they shutdown/safe)

#1
We could now make this part of libvirt-guests.service actions to do this -
after cleaning up guests.
Pro:
- no new service in the jungle of dependencies
Con:
- other components might not assume it will reap networks
- the name isn't indicating it will reap networks
- purpose overloading of the already somewhat awkward libvirt-guests.service
script

#2
Or we could add another service that is very much like libvirt-guests.service
maybe libvirt-network-shutdown.service - ordered to run on shutdown (would have
no real start action) after libvirt-guests.service and to iterate cleaning up
all currently active libvirtd networks.
It would link to [3] and actually every other ordering the same way as
libvirt-guests.service does.
Pro:
- cleaner separation of guest/network services
- explicit ordering
- ability to enable/disable service individually
Con:
- one more (albeit shutdown only oneshot) service

Once we have had a pre-discussion on this here I could write something
patch worthy for an initial RFC. I'd lean towards #2, but want to hear
other opinions first.

  Update (see comment #5)
  another QA-Test on same dc7700

This time i firstly confirmed issue was still there - YEP suspend & no mouse
buttons
Then i turned on another machine sharing KVM switch (more power is my theory
for this)
and the issue disappeared. It was tried again a few times with other machine
on, and
- no issues with mouse buttons on wake.. I'm going to change this it INVALID as
I'm suspicious
+ no issues with mouse buttons on wake.. I'm going to change this it INCOMPLETE
as I'm suspicious
it's hardware related; lack of power from my old boxes to my KVM switch (old
PSU's?)

- I'm marking this as INVALID - if I change my mind (another qa-test) I
+ I'm marking this as INCOMPLETE - if I change my mind (another qa-test) I
can always put it back to NEW

  ---
Notes: The box I tested this on has shared keyboard/mouse/video
I tried to re-produce on two other boxes (same thumb-drive so same daily
19.04 image)
I always check-media on first box tested after media is written (x201 I think
today)

Also note: lynorian (lubuntu-devel) also said
guiverc: I think I filed something about this in a vm a few weeks
ago
What I found doesn't apply in my opinion.

I consider this issue [really] MINOR or wishlist at most; in fact I still
wonder if it's a hardware issue related to my KVM switch (not getting enough
power or something like that)

  Lubuntu 19.04 QA-TEST on hp dc7700 (c2d-e6320, 5gb, nvidia quadro nvs
  290)

  // info from QA-TEST comments
  ..
firefox paused; suspended machine (using menu)

ISSUE: on wake (used keyboard to wake system) the mouse couldn't click
on anything, but keyboard functions worked perfectly (ctrl+alt+t to open
  term etc). i'll reboot & reload, re-try

reboot & retried.. same issue (on reboot; after reboot I ctrl+alt+T to
open term & ran `htop` so I had some changing data on screen to confirm
more than just mouse was moving on screen, then suspended..

on wake [2nd boot], notification boxes appeared... mouse moves
correctly, keyboard keys appear all good (can switch to tty & back) but
  no mouse buttons work

ran `xev` & is see all keyboard, and mouse movements, but no buttons
appear in window on pressing (unless I accidentally cause mouse to move)

Of note: I've experienced this behavior BEFORE & not reported, as the
reboot & re-try has always worked flawlessly.

Rebooted again & re-tested it a third time (menu->suspend, used mouse to
click yes [normally I hit enter]) & counted to 20
Woke machine (using power-button instead of keyboard) & keyboard perfect,
mouse movement perfect, alas no mouse-button function on screen or menu, nor
appearing in `xev` .. mouse wheel is recognized in `xev`.

// this is typed into another box - no mouse function on ubuntu-bug machine
since suspend

[Bug 1818777] Re: Lubuntu 19.04 qa-test; suspend then wake & keyboard & mouse movement, but not mouse-buttons

2019-03-05 Thread Chris Guiver
Another box - NO ISSUES again with mouse buttons after WAKE..
QA-test comment follows :-
---
hp 8200 elite sff (i5-2400, 8gb, nvidia quadro 600)
i'm really only testing for
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1818777 ie. suspend & wake
tests.
this box has its own screens & no shared mouse or keyboard !
// i'm not re-arranging screens; open terminal in one & htop running

suspend, waited, hit ESC & I see screensaver running on each display,
touch key & mouse & keyboard perfect

suspend, waited, hit ESC again & briefly see htop on top (left) display
before screensavers are visible, touch SHIFT & both mouse & keyboard
work perfectly.

suspend, waited .. wake this time with power button, NO SCREEN SAVER &
instant wake.. both keyboard & mouse work perfectly

suspend, waited .. wake again with power button, very-very-briefly see
htop before screensaver visible.. so it's not power-keyboard that
dictates whether screensaver shows.. but again keyboard & mouse are
working perfectly...

[Bug 1758261] Re: i want toinstall intel graphics for my pc which is as under

2019-03-05 Thread Daniel van Vugt
It appears the Xorg modeset driver is only offering you 1024x768 because
it can't retrieve the EDID (monitor resolution information etc) from the
monitor.

This might be a shortcoming of the monitor itself or it might be a cable
problem. Please try:

1. A different monitor cable; or

2. The older intel driver:
https://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/xenial/en/man4/intel.4.html or

3. A different monitor.

[Bug 1818777] Re: Lubuntu 19.04 qa-test; suspend then wake & keyboard & mouse movement, but not mouse-buttons

2019-03-05 Thread Chris Guiver
I did another QA-test on a different box (most of this is copied from qa-test
comments)
& suspended/awoke multiple times, without issue.
This second box has two mice, one thru KVM switch & one direct - both worked
flawlessly (after each awake-from-suspend)

This test is only run to explore (test for)
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1818777
this uses same display/keyboard, but has it's own [2nd] mouse I want to see if
it works (one mouse going thru kvm switch, one does not)
booted, opened term, `xev` then suspended, wrote/typed up to here..

woke using power switch; now I see screensaver?? (i didn't see that on last
box!)
keyboard & mouse work perfectly (both mice work)

suspend again.. waited, awoke again no issues (NO screensaver this time,
but did I wake the same way - not sure)

suspend again - waited, awoke again (greeted with screensaver on wake
using power-button) with keyboard & mouse (both) working perfectly

suspend again - waited, awoke again (power button & screensaver),
keyboard & mouse perfect

suspend again - waited, awoke again (power button, different
screensaver), keyboard & mouse perfect.

I cannot reproduce the aforementioned bug-report.

[Bug 1818772] Re: [disco-proposed] On the Boot splash screen, Grub does not show the 5.0 kernel installed.

2019-03-05 Thread Steve Langasek
You have filed this bug against the 'grub' package, which is grub 0.97
and is no longer included in Ubuntu. Normally, I would reassign such a
bug report to the grub2 package, which is the current version of grub in
use in Ubuntu; but your screenshots show menu entries that do not appear
to match what is produced by the Ubuntu update-grub. What version of
the grub package do you actually have installed?

Lubuntu 19.04 QA-TEST on hp dc7700 (c2d-e6320, 5gb, nvidia quadro nvs 290)

// info from QA-TEST comments
..
firefox paused; suspended machine (using menu)

Rebooted again & re-tested it a third time (menu->suspend, used mouse to click
yes [normally I hit enter]) & counted to 20
Woke machine (using power-button instead of keyboard) & keyboard perfect, mouse
movement perfect, alas no mouse-button function on screen or menu, nor
appearing in `xev` .. mouse wheel is recognized in `xev`.

[Bug 1818778] [NEW] Python should be compiled with USDT/dtrace user-space probes

2019-03-05 Thread Trent Lloyd
Public bug reported:

Python3.6 and later support being compiled with USDT/dtrace user-space
probes, this allows tools such as perf and BPF utilities (bpfcc-tools)
to do runtime profiling and tracing of Python execution.

Ubuntu should compile Python with this support to enable better
debugging of Python applications in production. perf/bpf tools can be
attached to running production processes without having to restart them
under a debugger which may destroy the situation you are trying to
observe. This would be particularly useful with OpenStack deployments
for example.

The current python3.6/python3.7/python3.8 packages do not build with
this support, because it requires a build-dependency on systemtap-sdt-
dev and the option --with-dtrace to be passed at compile time.

systemtap-sdt-dev is not currently in main, however, it was previously
approved for a MIR in Bug #1203590 - it seems the original packages this
was required for (Source Package: ust) was demoted to universe at some
point and the systemtap-sdt-dev dependency went with it. So I am hopeful
it will be re-approved for main inclusion and allow this to be done

[Bug 713385] Re: netcfg/choose_interface=auto fails to find the right interface

2019-03-05 Thread Nicholas Digati
I can also confirm this bug is still happening with the Ubuntu 18.04.2
installer. Using BOOTIF and "netcfg/choose_interface=auto" the installer
defaults to using eno1 (first interface in the list). These machines all
have an external network card they use the PXE boot.

I see the following messages in the installer syslog which makes it seem
like it knows which interface to use but ignores it afterwards and uses
a different interface:

Mar 6 03:46:42 netcfg[1195]: INFO: Starting netcfg v.1.142ubuntu7

Some of the machines I've tested on it appears to have worked and some don't
work at all (like the one with logs above). On the machines where it appears to
work the internal interfaces are getting different names (enp6s0f0, enp6s0f1)
so the external card comes first in the list (with the name enp5s0). So it just
seems like it works when it's still just using the first interface in the list.

We worked around this for now by disabling the internal network
card/interfaces in the BIOS so it only detects the external card.

(P.S sorry for information type updates above clicked too many times)

[Bug 1818547] Re: hid-sensor-hub spamming dmesg in 4.20

2019-03-05 Thread Kai-Heng Feng
Would it be possible for you to do a kernel bisection?

First, find the last good -rc kernel and the first bad -rc kernel from
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/

Then,
$ sudo apt build-dep linux
$ git clone git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git
$ cd linux
$ git bisect start
$ git bisect good $(the good version you found)
$ git bisect bad $(the bad version found)
$ make localmodconfig
$ make -j`nproc` deb-pkg
Install the newly built kernel, then reboot with it.
If the issue still happens,
$ git bisect bad
Otherwise,
$ git bisect good
Repeat to "make -j`nproc` deb-pkg" until you find the commit that causes the
regression.
