[Bug 1815477] Re: Upgrade QEMU to version 2.11.2 in Ubuntu 18.04.1

2019-03-20 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
@lagarcia - That is unfortunate to hear, as I'm sure people would
benefit in general from the fixes in the stable release - if we can
ensure well enough that there are no new issues introduced.

So for now I'd ask you to imagine somebody else has requested it and I
still would want to get an ack from IBM for ppc64el and s390x
prechecking the PPA I provided in comment #5.

If you have clear reasons to abstain (e.g. known issues in 2.11.2) please state
them, then we will stop considering 2.11.2 for now.
But if not, please try if you can allocate some test resources and let me know
of a ETA when such tests could conclude.

** Description changed:

  [Impact]

   * qemu Upstream maintains stable branches to collect considered
to be safe patches - we are at 2.11.1 atm and requested to consider
     the most recent 2.11.2

  [Test Case]

   * Being a stable but full minor release means there is no single good
test to verify. Instead we will pass plenty of regression checks on it
     before calling it good.
   * The biggest single change is on intel-iommu which we will test
     explicitly using manual passthrough tests

  [Regression Potential]

   * Due to the nature of the change (more than a single fix, affecting
multiple areas of qemu) the chances are higher to hit a regression.
To avoid hitting any in the field I'll run the full qemu regression
suite we have but also would want to leave it longer in proposed and
e.g. ask the Openstack Team to give it a test before releasing.
   * In regard to "327d4645 spapr: make pseries-2.11 the default machine
type" and its siblings as well as VSMT which caused trouble in the past
we will need IBM to re-check for PPC if the resulting build is ok
according to their testing as well.

  [Other Info]

   * Lets make sure we catched all pre-checks:
#1 DONE - Openstack to test the PPA
-    #2 TBD - IBM to confirm no issues around HTM being added
-    #3 TBD - Canonical migration and general Virt regression checks
+    #2 TBD - IBM to confirm no new issues on ppc/s390x platforms
+    #3 DONE - Canonical migration and general Virt regression checks
Only once those are all confirmed we will put it into SRU review and
there retest #3 and the passthrough cases.

Since June 2018 QEMU has a more recent stable version (2.11.2) than the one
provided in Ubuntu 18.04.1 (2.11.1). This new version comes with a number of
bug fixes, which should be incorporated to Ubuntu 18.04.1.

[Bug 1814936] Re: chromium-browser fails to start, with message [...:ERROR:data_store_impl.cc(131)] Failed to open Data Reduction Proxy DB: 3

2019-03-20 Thread Olivier Tilloy
** Description changed:

+ EDIT: upstream report at
+ https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=944295
+
ps shows chromium-browser processes are running, but no windows appear.

I've been able to correlate the message
"[...:ERROR:data_store_impl.cc(131)] Failed to open Data Reduction Proxy
DB: 3" with this failure mode.

Users are frustrated when it happens to them, and advice online is to
delete your profile and reboot, which is suboptimal, because it removes
all bookmarks, history, settings, etc. I have one user that gets this
error almost daily, even after workstation swap, so I'm guessing there's
  a behavioral component as well.

I have confirmed that killing all chromium-browser processes and rolling
back just $HOME/.config/chromium/Default/Preferences to the state it was
before a prior successful start is enough to fix the issue when it
  happens to me.

[Bug 1817225] Re: 18.04.2 breaks xrdp

2019-03-20 Thread Ron Widell
It also affects Kubuntu 18.04.2

cat /etc/issue

I moved /var/log/xrdp.log and /var/log/xrdp-sesman.log to a different
location so they'd be smaller and easier to parse by booting a live
system, then restarted this system.

Unfortunately, this time the xrdp daemon failed to start.

No sense trying to make a connection, and no xrdp.log was created. xrdp-

[Bug 1731911] Re: Xwayland crashed with SIGABRT in OsAbort() from AbortServer() from FatalError() from xwl_read_events() from ospoll_wait()

2019-03-20 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Interesting that errors.ubuntu.com is showing zero reports of this crash
in 19.04, and zero reports in the final release version of Xorg for
18.10 onward. But those same Xorg versions are crashing in 18.04. So I
would have to conclude that this was fixed in mutter in Ubuntu 18.10
onward.

[Bug 1821126] [NEW] Leading zero in "Programming Mode -> Binary" inserts extra zeros

2019-03-20 Thread Anton Slooten
Public bug reported:

This bug is about inputting data in "Programming Mode -> Binary mode" in
the gnome-calculator snap.

1)
Description:Ubuntu 18.10
Release:18.10

2) - Its the default snap - so I guess this?

gnome-calculator 3.32.0+git2.cae338ea 352 stable/…
canonical✓ -

3)
When inputting data in binary format, you should be able to lead with an
arbitrary amount of zeros. When accepting the input (by pressing enter, or
clicking equals) the answer should be the value you entered (less the leading
zero)
01001  = 1001
010101001  = 10101001

4)
I you lead your input with zeros and input more than 2 digits (with an obvious
'1' being in there) there is a large quantity of inserted zero's in the output,
obviously making the value totally different to what you input.

For instance the input:
01001  = 11
010101001  =101011

However leading with a 1 produces the correct result:
1010  = 1010

The obvious answer is do not lead with a zero. But monkey see monkey do
when inputting data.

[Bug 1816396] Re: Starting snap from the after-install notification fails

2019-03-20 Thread Robert Ancell
** Description changed:

- Looking to the journal it looks like it's trying to use the wrong
- desktop name, e.g on vlc it gave an error "no such desktop file:
- io.snapcraft.vlc-"
+ [Impact]
+ The launch button on the notification shown after snaps are installed doesn't
 work.
+
+ [Test Case]
+ 1. Open GNOME Software
+ 2. Select a snap that is not installed
+ 3. Install that snap
+ 4. Switch focus to another application (i.e. so GNOME Software doesn't have
focus)
+
+ Expected result:
+ A notification is shown saying the app is installed with a button that
launches it.
+
+ Observed result:
+ A notification is shown but the launch button give an error like "no such
desktop file: io.snapcraft.vlc-"
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ TBD

[Bug 1594863] [NEW] OSK consideration for life cycle changes in unity8 windowed mode

2019-03-20 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

You have been subscribed to a public security bug by Seth Arnold (seth-arnold):

Access to the On-Screen-Keyboard, as provided by Maliit, is predicated
on the application being “active”. Unity8’s life cycle management, in
small screen devices had always stopped (via SIGSTOP) any application
which was not the top most application. From a security perspective this
provided protection from a nefarious app from taking over, while in the
background, to the input stream of the user’s interaction with the top-
most active application. With the advent of convergence, unity8’s life
cycle management has grown to accommodate both small screen and large
screen device configurations. For large screens, “windowed mode” is a
mode that can be auto & user activated based on screen size and presence
of keyboard/mouse. During “windowed mode” the life cycle permits
applications to remain “active” if they are visible but not the top-most
or “focused” application (the user experience example is working on a
document in the top-most window while watching video in an active but
unfocused window). Remaining active, while not in the user’s “focus”
creates a risk in that an application could connect to Maliit and take
over the user’s input intended for the focused application. So while
this is bad, the top-most application will not reflect the input, as it
would be consumed by the nefarious app. It’s worth noting this risk does
not exist with hardware keyboard input, which is the largest majority of
expected use case. Security team would classify the severity as “medium”
but we need to treat with priority and sensitivity due to the marketing
investment we have made in touting the security of Unity8/Mir.

our plan of attack is covered in this document

[Bug 1379826] [NEW] uuid.uuid1() is not suitable as an unguessable identifier/token

2019-03-20 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

You have been subscribed to a public security bug by Seth Arnold (seth-arnold):

uuid.uuid1() has been used for the FileStorage.key field. This field is
used to create unguessable URLs that we can hand out from MAAS to refer
back to that file. However, uuid1() is not random enough:

  def uuid1(node=None, clock_seq=None):
"""Generate a UUID from a host ID, sequence number, and the
current time. If 'node' is not given, getnode() is used to obtain
the hardware address. If 'clock_seq' is given, it is used as the
sequence number; otherwise a random 14-bit sequence number is
  chosen."""

The host ID is, afaik, based on the machine's MAC address, so this is
easily discoverable. The current time is assumed to be nanoseconds, but
in practice appears to be microseconds; check time.time() output.

An attacker, with the knowledge of the machine's MAC address, would need
to search 589824 UUIDs to discover every file created during a 1
hour timespan (3600e6 microseconds * 2^14). That's a lot of UUIDs, but I
doubt it's even close to "secure".

I think uuid.uuid4() would be a better choice here, as it is entirely
made from random data. Or we could go direct and encode (e.g. base
16/32/64) 16 bytes straight from /dev/urandom.

This follows on from discussion in bug 1212205.

[Bug 1298772] [NEW] MAAS API vulnerable to CSRF attack

2019-03-20 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

You have been subscribed to a public security bug by Seth Arnold (seth-arnold):

Because of the flexibility of the API, various actions could be performed as
part of a CSRF attack. For
example, by enticing a logged in user to visit a page containing the following
HTML, a remote attacker
could trick the user into adding an SSH key.

https://maas-server-address/MAAS/api/1.0/account/prefs/sshkeys/";
method="POST" name="netcraftForm">

document.netcraftForm.submit();

This could potentially give the attacker SSH access to hosts. Other simple
attacks could include adding
oauth keys, uploading and deleting files, or setting configuration values – for
example, changing the
HTTP proxy used by nodes or uploading custom commissioning scripts.
In MAAS version 1.5, more API actions have been implemented, and as a result
several extra attacks
are possible. For example, new user accounts can be created via HTML such as:

http://maas-server-address/MAAS/api/1.0/users/"; method="POST"
name=”netcraftForm”>

document.netcraftForm.submit();

= Remediation =
Most of the MAAS application is protected against cross-site request forgery
attacks using Django’s
built in anti-CSRF middleware. This validates requests by ensuring that a
cryptographic nonce which is
included in a cookie also appears in HTTP requests which result in
configuration changes. Netcraft
recommends that, if possible, when API requests are authenticated using Djano’s
sessionid cookie,
the framework’s CSRF protection is also used.

[Bug 1772791] Re: Lock/login screen displays password in clear text occasionally

-
  Hello, folks,

Today when I returned to my computer (which I locked with Super+L) and
attempted to unlock it, it displayed my passphrase in cleartext in the
'Password' box. I noticed as soon as I got the first character in, then
typed in the second character and it stayed clear. I then picked up my
phone to record the attached video and while I was fiddling with it to
get a good camera shot, the screen locked (for inactivity perhaps?) and
when I unlocked this time, the password only displayed as dots (as
  expected).

So unfortunately, I don't know how to replicate. It _did_ occur though,
as the attached video will show if you go slowly (look for "hu", the
first characters of legendary password "hunter2").

Would "a few moments" be around 2-3 minutes after powering on? Because
your kernel log is very clear that only one event happens after boot has
finished and it is an error with the integrated GPU (which is usually
the one with primary control over the laptop screen):

[Bug 1819615] Re: For additional hardware support, modemmanager needs to be upgraded to 1.10 on Bionic

2019-03-20 Thread Yuan-Chen Cheng
@Till, Add DW5821 which also need new mm to support. I'll test both here
as it hit the proposed channel.

** Description changed:

  [Impact]

-  * The new modemmanager package adds DW5820e support.
+  * The new modemmanager package adds DW5820e and DW5821 support.
   * This modemmanager version is needed to support new devices.

  [Test Case]

   * install modemmanager, libmbim, and libqmi from -proposed
   * reboot and try WWAN function to see if any regression there.
   * perform general dogfooding of its reverse dependencies (network-
     manager, gnome-control-center etc.)

  [Regression Potential]

   * The package comes from Disco and should not have regression there.
   * Every new upstream release can potentially break existing dependencies
if any of the required features have been changed/removed, so besides
regular testing a general dogfooding session with the new modemmanager
     is advised.

  [Original Description]

To have Bionic, the current LTS, working with as wide of a range of
modems as possible we need to have it upgraded to the current 1.10
versions. Also the underlying libraries need to get upgraded
  appropriately.

What is the range of possible values for this -D option, and why would

[Bug 1679450] Re: package libopenni0 1.5.4.0-14 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2019-03-20 Thread Bob Feretich
I agree that it's probably ROS related. That's a common element to my
computer. Somewhere, I thought I saw something about ROS support for
OPENNI being discontinued. ROS used openni to communicate with the
Microsoft Kinect 3D camera.

I tried to search for it, but the last meaningful openni posts are from
2017.

I just upgraded from Ubuntu 14.04 / ROS Indigo to Ubuntu 16.04 / ROS
Kinetic and have been seeing these errors since the upgrade. I have no
clue whether the root problem is in Ubuntu or ROS.

[Bug 1821111] [NEW] OpenSSL certificate md too weak

2019-03-20 Thread Matthias Schlett
Public bug reported:

openssl 1.1.0g-2ubuntu4.3 rejects the certs produced by gadmin-openvpn-server,
because it use md5.
Unfortunally the parameter default_md = md5 is hard coded in the binary.
I tried to change default_md to sha256 in gadmin-openvpn-openssl.conf, but
during generation of the certs the changes are overwritten.
gadmin-openvpn-server is aborted by
OpenSSL: error:140AB18E:SSL routines:SSL_CTX_use_certificate:ca md too weak

[Bug 1812754]

2019-03-20 Thread Kevin O'Gorman
I have a better idea. Instead of inventing reasons for me to mess up my
settings why don't YOU try to confirm it. I sent all the stuff you'd
need to try this. If it does not add blank pages for you with whatever
settings you have, go ahead and mark it invalid. If it _does_ add blank
pages, mark it confirmed and go from there.
