[Bug 1832863] [NEW] Kernel 4.4.0.145 (& subsequent) boots to black screen.

2019-06-14 Thread 2CV67
Public bug reported:

On my Asus EeePC 1015PED netbook, running Ubuntu 16.04LTS, I updated to kernel
4.4.0.145 on 3 April 2019.
On the first boot after the update, I got the usual grub screen, then "Loading
Linux 4.4.0.145 ... Loading initial ramdisk ..." then the screen went black
with no mouse pointer or invite.
I could hear disk activity ( & see the disk-activity light) then the usual
drumroll for login, but the screen stayed black.
I escaped using REISUO & retried several times with the same result.
If I wait for the login drumroll then input my login, there is more disk
activity (setting up the desktop) but the screen stays black.
So the PC is not freezing, just no screen.
Trying Ctrl+Alt+F1 (or other F keys) produces nothing.

I can continue to use the PC normally if I select the previous kernel
4.4.0.142 at the grub screen.

On 10 June 2019, I updated to kernel 4.4.0.150 & have the same black
screen as with .145.

So I am unable to use this PC AT ALL with current kernels.

I asked about this problem on Ubuntu Forum
https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2415972
with no success & the suggestion was to raise this bug...
There may be useful information in that thread, including this output from
"inxi -Fzr" (run in good kernel .142).

That's correct on DD 2.3 - still not very available - and is ok. Will
still post test results.

[Bug 1832859] [NEW] during shutdown libvirt-guests gets stopped after file system unmount

2019-06-14 Thread Erlend Slettevoll
Public bug reported:

When using automatic suspend at reboot/shutdown, it makes sense to store
the suspend data on a separate partition to ensure there is always
enough available space. However this does not work, as the partition
gets unmounted before or during libvirt suspend.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Use Ubuntu 18.04.02 LTS
2. Install libvirt + qemu-kvm
3. Start a guest
4. Set libvirt-guests to suspend at shutdown/reboot by editing
/etc/default/libvirt-guests
5. Create a fstab entry to mount a separate partition to mount point
/var/lib/libvirt/qemu/save. Then run sudo mount /var/lib/libvirt/qemu/save to
mount the partition.
6. Reboot

Expected result:
The guest suspend data would be written to the /var/lib/libvirt/qemu/save,
resulting in the data being stored at the partition specified in fstab. At
boot, this partition would be mounted as specified in fstab and libvirt-guest
would be able to read the data and restore the guests.

Actual result:
The partition gets unmounted before libvirt-guests suspends the guests,
resulting in the data being stored on the partition containing the root file
system. During boot, the empty partition gets mounted over the non-empty
/var/lib/libvirt/qemu/save directory, resulting in libvirt-guests being unable
to read the saved data.

As a side effect, the saved data is using up space on the root partition
even if the directory appears empty.

[Bug 1787904] Re: [radeon] machine crash after GPU reset

2019-06-14 Thread Eliezer Paiewonsky
Experienced crashes under kernel 4.15.0-51 after resuming from suspend
on a Dell Latitude E6540 running BIOS version A12 with the following
graphics hardware:

Intel Corporation 4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 06)
Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Mars XTX [Radeon HD 8790M]

After upgrading to kernel 5.0.0-16 seems to not be reoccurring. After searching
online seems that the issues possibly relate to the issue fixed by this patch:
https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/10813959/

Hm that makes sense!

>From my reading of that issue, it's clear that you want the checks
removed from the fuzzer, but not so clear that you want them added to
the main library. That might be worth clarifying with upstream.

[Bug 1832856] [NEW] Gnome-shell crashes frequently

If there something I can do to help debug this issue I'll be glad to
help.

[Bug 1832370] Re: Unable to configure or disable TLS 1.3 via openssl.cnf

2019-06-14 Thread Simon Déziel
@xnox, thanks it was indeed an error on my part. The key was to have
openssl_conf in the default/unnamed section and then not introduce bogus
values: Ciphers is not recognized and causes the config section to be
ignored.

I believe this bug could be marked as Invalid for all the releases but
I'll let you do that as I only tested on Bionic and I don't want to
overrule the statuses you set. Thanks again!

[Bug 1327791]

2019-06-14 Thread Manuel Grießmayr
I store all my browser bookmarks as .desktop files and to me it is very
annoying to everytime click "Mark as executable". The user should have
the option to check "Don't ask again for future .desktop files." and the
user should be informed about the security issues. He should have the
choice between better UX or better security. Of course the user should
also be able to undo this setting. Even if we only have a hidden
setting, this would be better than nothing. Is there a plan how to move
ahead with this issue?

[Bug 266975] Re: Request for new language packages for Kurdish Sorani (ckb)

2019-06-14 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
You can already set the locale manually if you want:

sudo locale-gen ckb_IQ
sudo update-locale LANG=ckb_IQ.UTF-8

(the latter edits /etc/default/locale)

But as long as no ckb language packs exist, it won't result in so much
Kurdish on the screen.

[Bug 1832851] [NEW] Add metapackages: golang-latest, golang-latest-default

2019-06-14 Thread PHD
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu provides an outdated golang 1.10 by default.

And it is very inconvenient to use the 'golang-1.12' package, because:

1) User must specify the exact version.
A 'golang-latest' metapackage would be very useful here.

2) 'golang-1.12' does not provide go/gofmt binaries anywhere in $PATH which is
very confusing.
Metapackages like 'golang-latest-default', 'golang-default',
'golang-1.11-default', 'golang-1.12-default' should exist to allow simple
setting of alternatives for /usr/bin/go and /usr/bin/gofmt with just one apt
install command.

To summarize:
One should be able to setup latest Go that works out-of-the-box with one simple
command:
$ sudo apt install golang-latest-default

Resolved with the following commits:

https://git.xfce.org/xfce/exo/commit/?id=404a7ef73246b73cb4cd2a4ab8cc10e1a02d6b74
Always terminates the mimetype associations with ";"

Removes bad entries that should no longer be used.

https://git.xfce.org/xfce/exo/commit/?id=8bc59ad1c48df132e917337bd08211be58af5bb1
Possibly related, this synchronizes the preferences with gio-mime.

Will be available with Exo 0.12.6, release shortly.

[Bug 1832659] Re: openssl 1.1.1-1ubuntu2.1~18.04.1 contains upstream bug 7350

2019-06-14 Thread Dimitri John Ledkov
** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+
+ * Regression was introduced in OpenSSL 1.1.1 and fixed in 1.1.1b that
prevents initialising libcrypto/libssl multiple times, and/or with different
options.
+ * This breaks existing applications that correctly use init API, ie.
initialise libcrypto before/separately from libssl and/or with different
options.
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+  * wget
+
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/cosmic/+source/openssl/+bug/1832659/+attachment/5270782/+files/test_multiple_libssl_libcrypto_init.py
+
+  * python3 ./test_multiple_libssl_libcrypto_init.py
+
+ test_multiple_init (__main__.TestMultipleInit) ... ok
+
+ --
+ Ran 1 test in 0.014s
+
+ OK
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ * This is a cherrypick from upstream, and is backwards compatible with
+ existing code. Simply init succeeds under more conditions now, than it
+ did previously in 1.1.1. Also with this fix, OpenSSL is back to how
+ things used to work with 1.1.0 and prior releases.
+
+ [Original Bug report]
+
  After the update of openssl in bionic, I started having an issue and
  after troubleshooting found this issue:

  https://github.com/openssl/openssl/issues/7350

  Applying the patch linked in that issue and rebuilding the openssl
  package avoided the issue.

[Bug 1797581] Re: Composing a VM in MAAS with exactly 2048 MB RAM causes the VM to kernel panic

2019-06-14 Thread Reto Glauser
I can also confirm the reported issue. I've tried with Juju and plain
MAAS to create a VM with just 2048MB and it fails in both cases.
Creating, registering and commissioning the machine works, but it cannot
be deployed.

System information: 18.04.2 LTS up-to-date
MAAS version: 2.5.3 (7533-g65952b418-0ubuntu1~18.04.1)
Kernel version: 5.1.3 (Ukuu)

I don't see what information we have to provide (last comment from
@paelzer)?

I've added a diff of the VM configuration ($ virsh dumpxml vm), but I
don't see any unexpected difference. The VM with 4096MB memory
specification boots and can be deployed while the 2048MB VM cannot.

[Bug 266975] Re: Request for new language packages for Kurdish Sorani (ckb)

2019-06-14 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
On 2019-06-14 12:02, jwtear nariman wrote:
> Hey, what we need to complete this?

The ckb_IQ locale has been in Ubuntu since a few years as a patch, so
you need to translate more. Currently approximately 0.5% of the Kurdish
(Sorani) strings have been translated; to have separate language packs
generated I think that 5% needs to be translated.

https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/eoan/+lang/ckb

Also, having a locale as an Ubuntu patch is not a good long time
solution. You should really visit that upstream bug:

https://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=9809

and answer the questions posted by Mike Frysinger in the latest comment,
so the locale can be committed in upstream glibc.

[Bug 1832834] [NEW] Irregular system freezes after updating to 1.1.1b-1ubuntu2.2

2019-06-14 Thread Markus Birth
Public bug reported:

Yesterday, I've updated openssl on my Raspberry Pi 3B+ running disco
arm64 from 1.1.1b-1ubuntu2.1 to 1.1.1b-1ubuntu2.2 . That was at 10:41
CEST. About 12:36 the system froze. I was able to reset the system at
around 17:17. It froze again at around 17:55. Reset it again 19:09,
froze again 00:15.

Freeze = solid green "busy" light and doesn't answer to anything. Since
it's a headless system, I only have the logfiles but they don't show
anything obvious.

At 01:06, I've downgraded back to 1.1.1b-1ubuntu2.1 and didn't have ANY
freeze at all since then (13:13 now here).

The system is running ejabberd, SyncThing and a few more programs, that
make heavy use of OpenSSL.

[Bug 1753884] Re: session logout after suspend

2019-06-14 Thread WinEunuchs2Unix
This happens to me periodically with Ubuntu 16.04.6 LTS, Kernel
4.14.114.

External HDMI 1080p TV nVidia GTX 970M driven
External HDMI 4K TV i915 Thunderbolt3 USB-C driven
Internal Dell 1080p LCD i915 driven

Method:

1) close laptop lid with power & systemd set to "do nothing"
2) external monitors will disconnect (no signal) and have to move mouse to
reconnect.
3) select GUI suspend from external monitor
4) power off external screens after system suspends
5) power on external screens
6) open laptop lid to resume
7) about 20% of time login screen appears and all work is lost

If fixed in 17.10 would be nice to see backported to 16.04 as current
plans for upgrade aren't until 20.04.

Some clarification:
1. dns-priority=-1 used to work (openvpn had highest DNS priority over other
connections) before the regression happend.
2. I rebooted my system after changing config to dns-search=~

[Bug 1832138] Re: Login screen never appears on vmwgfx but setting WaylandEnable=false fixes it

2019-06-14 Thread Jussi Vänskä
Daniel

After uncommenting the Wayland option the login appears, I can log in
but the desktop refuses to resize. This was working previously. Entering
full screen however works and doesn't crash the system.

The crash with kernel option nomodeset when resizing or attempting
fullscreen is probably a different bug as you said.

[Bug 1829566] Re: network-manager 1.10.14-0ubuntu2 ignores systemd-resolved configured dns

2019-06-14 Thread mzmrk
I have some extra information that might lead you into the right
direction.

I used the following extra line in my openvpn connection config file
(/etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/vpn_connection_name):
[ipv4]
dns-priority=-1

After the update DNS received from OpenVPN connection was not respected
anymore.

Today I replaced that line with the following:
[ipv4]
dns-search=~

with following versions:
network-manager: 1.10.14-0ubuntu2
systemd: 237-3ubuntu10.22

Now my DNS is correctly updated after connecting to OpenVPN.

[Bug 1832138] Re: Login screen never appears on vmwgfx but setting WaylandEnable=false fixes it

2019-06-14 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Looking at hungboot.txt I am starting to think maybe the login screen
('gnome-shell' process) is actually running in Wayland mode but failing
to display. That would explain a lot...

Pat, can you please reproduce the bug again and while it is happening:

 1. SSH into the VM.

 2. Run 'pidof gnome-shell' to find out the process ID of that process.
Tell us if you don't get a result.

 3. If you do get a result from step 2 then using that PID run:

sudo kill -ABRT PID

where PID is the process ID number.

 4. Wait 30 seconds.

 5. Hopefully a crash report will have been generated so now follow:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Responses#Missing_a_crash_report_or_having_a_.crash_attachment

[Bug 1832138] Re: Login screen never appears on vmwgfx but setting WaylandEnable=false fixes it

2019-06-14 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I have been trying to reproduce this bug in VMware but have not been
able to. Ubuntu 18.04 always starts up with a login screen successfully
for me.

What it does not do successfully is offer the "Ubuntu on Wayland" option
most of the time. So I expect that's the same root cause as this bug.

Ordinarily if Wayland support is attempted and fails gracefully then
your journalctl log should show something like:

  Jun 14 02:28:16 ubuntu gnome-shell[790]: Failed to create backend:
Could not find a primary drm kms device

If you don't see that message and still don't get Wayland support then
it suggests mutter/gnome-shell is crashing during that attempt to try
Wayland. In that case we would ask you to follow these instructions from
within the virtual machine:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Responses#Missing_a_crash_report_or_having_a_.crash_attachment

I'll dig a bit deeper to try and find out why Wayland support seems to
work so rarely, because that's the part of this bug I can reproduce.

2019-06-14 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Jussi,

That sounds like maybe a different bug. Although "commenting out the
Wayland" is also not what you need to do. You need to change:

  #WaylandEnable=false

to:

  WaylandEnable=false

If that doesn't fix the problem for you then you have a different bug.
In that case please open a new bug by running:

  ubuntu-bug mutter

from within the VM.

[Bug 1832828] [NEW] ipv6: fix EFAULT on sendto with icmpv6 and hdrincl

2019-06-14 Thread Olivier Matz
Public bug reported:

== SRU Justification ==

The following code returns EFAULT (Bad address):

  s = socket(AF_INET6, SOCK_RAW, IPPROTO_ICMPV6);
  setsockopt(s, SOL_IPV6, IPV6_HDRINCL, 1);
  sendto(ipv6_icmp6_packet, addr);   /* returns -1, errno = EFAULT */

The IPv4 equivalent code works.

The failure happens because 2 bytes are eaten from the msghdr by
rawv6_probe_proto_opt() starting from commit 19e3c66b52ca ("ipv6
equivalent of "ipv4: Avoid reading user iov twice after
raw_probe_proto_opt""), but at that time it was not a problem because
IPV6_HDRINCL was not yet introduced.

Only eat these 2 bytes if hdrincl == 0.

== Fix ==

Upstream commits:
59e3e4b52663 ("ipv6: use READ_ONCE() for inet->hdrincl as in ipv4")
b9aa52c4cb45 ("ipv6: fix EFAULT on sendto with icmpv6 and hdrincl")

== Regression Potential ==

Low. Only impacts IPv6 raw sockets with IPV6_HDRINCL.

== Test Case ==

Copy/paste this code in a python3 interpreter:

IPPROTO_ICMPV6 = socket.getprotobyname('ipv6-icmp')
SOL_IPV6 = 41
IPV6_HDRINCL = 36
import socket
send_s = socket.socket(socket.AF_INET6, socket.SOCK_RAW, IPPROTO_ICMPV6)
send_s.setsockopt(SOL_IPV6, IPV6_HDRINCL, 1)
# this is an IPv6 + ICMPv6 echo packet
req =
b'`\x00\x00\x00\x00":@?\xfe\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x01?\xfe\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x02\x80\x00\xe0\xda9\xa0V\x8dabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz'
send_s.sendto(req, ('3ffe::2', 0, 0, 0))

On error, it raises:
  OSError: [Errno 14] Bad address

After the fix, no exception is raised.

Please remember that this bug will require SRU verification. Since this
is basically resolved through a dependency removal, the only test case
is to check if the package is installable for all the supported series.

Yes, we know. But that's not an exact bug as much as an observation that
performance is poor. For the type of issues you describe I have made a

[Bug 1832370] Re: Unable to configure or disable TLS 1.3 via openssl.cnf

2019-06-14 Thread Dimitri John Ledkov
I have started bionic lxd container with nginx and snakeoil
certificates.

# patch /etc/ssl/openssl.cnf cap-to-tls1.2.patch
patching file /etc/ssl/openssl.cnf
Hunk #1 succeeded at 16 (offset 1 line).
Hunk #2 succeeded at 353 (offset 2 lines).
# systemctl restart nginx

And connect from the host system which has stock openssl.cnf

$ openssl s_client [fd42:3fcc:8a27:4e69:216:3eff:fe4c:5b9e]:443 | grep -e
Protocol -e Cipher
Can't use SSL_get_servername
depth=0 CN = nearby-osprey.lxd
verify error:num=18:self signed certificate
verify return:1
depth=0 CN = nearby-osprey.lxd
verify return:1
New, TLSv1.2, Cipher is ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384
Protocol  : TLSv1.2
Cipher: ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384
^C

Back in the container

# patch -R /etc/ssl/openssl.cnf cap-to-tls1.2.patch
patching file /etc/ssl/openssl.cnf
Hunk #1 succeeded at 16 (offset 1 line).
Hunk #2 succeeded at 350 (offset 2 lines).

# patch /etc/ssl/openssl.cnf reorder-tls1.3-ciphersuites.patch
patching file /etc/ssl/openssl.cnf
Hunk #1 succeeded at 16 (offset 1 line).
Hunk #2 succeeded at 353 (offset 2 lines).
# systemctl restart nginx

Connecting to the container again externally:
$ openssl s_client [fd42:3fcc:8a27:4e69:216:3eff:fe4c:5b9e]:443 | grep -e
Protocol -e Cipher
Can't use SSL_get_servername
depth=0 CN = nearby-osprey.lxd
verify error:num=18:self signed certificate
verify return:1
depth=0 CN = nearby-osprey.lxd
verify return:1
New, TLSv1.3, Cipher is TLS_CHACHA20_POLY1305_SHA256
^C

# patch -R /etc/ssl/openssl.cnf reorder-tls1.3-ciphersuites.patch
patching file /etc/ssl/openssl.cnf
Hunk #1 succeeded at 16 (offset 1 line).
Hunk #2 succeeded at 350 (offset 2 lines).
# systemctl restart nginx

So using the above patches to openssl.cnf I was able to reorder chipersuites of
stock bionic nginx, and cap to TLSv1.2.

So with attached

2019-06-14 Thread Daniel van Vugt
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1424201 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1424201

It appears the problem is probably that your web browser is using all
the CPU power to display YouTube's auto-playing front page. Because our
web browsers don't support hardware video decoding (LP: #1424201).

Your CPU is certainly new enough to do it. Your CPU is Apollo Lake
generation as shown in this picture:

  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IntelQuickSyncVideo#YouTube

So the only problem here is that Firefox would be stealing all your CPU
time, which then prevents gnome-shell from responding quickly. That
makes this a duplicate of bug 1424201.

[Bug 1812266] Re: Keyboard layout indicator does not indicate current layout (18.04 Bionic beaver)

2019-06-14 Thread hpp23
I have currently installed: gnome-shell 3.28.4-0ubuntu18.04.1.
After more than five months, this bug is still in my installation of Ubuntu
18.04.2 LTS and annoys me every single day.
I am really disappointed.
Can somebody explain to me in simple language why the bug fix is still not
released?

[Bug 1832101] Re: systemd-networkd: Lost carrier e1000

2019-06-14 Thread Shivaram Lingamneni
I'm having this issue as well, with the 5.0.0-16-generic kernel on amd64
and an Intel I219-V NIC using the e1000e driver. I have a test case that
can reproduce it somewhat reliably (involving a lot of concurrent back-
and-forth chatter on my LAN).

I was able to reproduce it even after this command:

ethtool -K enp0s31f6 gso off gro off tso off rx off tx off

although anecdotally, disabling those features makes reproduction
harder.

After the original oops with backtrace (similar to the one posted
above), the problem presents simply as:

Jun 14 03:54:43 good-fortune systemd-networkd[7815]: enp0s31f6: Lost carrier
Jun 14 03:54:43 good-fortune systemd-networkd[7815]: enp0s31f6: DHCP lease lost

with no further backtraces.
