[Bug 1833040] Re: virt-manager fails to show virtual console: internal error: unable to execute QEMU command 'getfd': No file descriptor supplied via SCM_RIGHTS

2019-06-18 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
As I assumed easily reproducible

[ 7152.173377] audit: type=1400 audit(1560925171.038:439):
apparmor="DENIED" operation="file_r50-221da1d95974" pid=18422 comm
="qemu-system-x86" family="unix" sock_type="stream" protocol=0 "

Compared to other denies this is really rather low on extra qualifiers -
I see why you just added "unix," for now :-/

We used to have this for the past few releases:
  unix (send, receive) type=stream addr=none peer=(label=/usr/sbin/libvirtd),

The peer detection is gone now, I have now good idea why, but essentially for
libvirt 4.0 we have to trim the rule to
  unix (send, receive) type=stream addr=none,

Which still a rather (too) open rule.

Further I have realized that your systems (which are Eoan, while I'm eoan LXD
on Bionic+HWE 4.18) actually detect a peer, but with the path changed.
- kernel 5.0.0-16 (Eoan) peer="libvirtd"
- kernel 4.18 (Bionic + HWE) no peer detected
- older libvirt peer=(label=/usr/sbin/libvirtd)

I started a discussion in #security
if nothing comes back I'll set jdstrand to CC anyway when submitting something
upstream, maybe he has an idea why the peer detection was changed.

Alsa is reporting that headphones are repeatedly plugged in and out, and
that makes pulseaudio switch between headphones and spdif output. I'd
guess that's a hardware defect. You can work around the problem by
commenting out module-switch-on-port-available in /etc/pulse/default.pa.
That will stop the output switching.

The crash seems to happen when a stream (in this case a bell sound from
gnome shell) stops during an output switch. I don't know how that's
possible, I'll continue investigation later.

unlinked. A patch for this can be found here:

The patch seems good. I still wonder what's really happening here,
though. I think it's not possible for the stream to end during the
profile switch, because after detaching from the old sink, no more audio
is consumed from the stream before it's attached to the new sink. Does
something call pa_sink_input_kill()?

[Bug 1829805] Re: Lubuntu Eoan Daily Image fails to boot after install on KVM

2019-06-18 Thread Walter Lapchynski
We got a potential fix thanks to TJ that seems to be working wonderfully from
what I can ascertain:
https://phab.lubuntu.me/D15

Download the raw diff, cd /etc/calamares, sudo patch --strip 2 <
/path/to/diff, and install like normal. Done!

[Bug 1832859] Re: during shutdown libvirt-guests gets stopped after file system unmount

2019-06-18 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
Thanks Erlend for the log.
I'm glad that the suggestion worked - now we need to check in which scope the
file is defined and ask for a change there - this should also ensure we are not
missing any hidden requirement that would be thwarted by that change (I could
think of it starting too late for other things then, or even to create a
dependency loop as it has quite some After dependencies).

The file is installed since late 2017
 196 lvm2 (2.02.173-2) unstable; urgency=medium

...
 200 * Install and enable blk-availability service.

Its actual content is from upstream, so this is the place to discuss it.
  scripts/blk_availability_systemd_red_hat.service.in

I have found that newer versions have added one dependency.
=> https://github.com/lvmteam/lvm2/issues/17
But that only ensures it doesn't reach shutdown.target before this is done.
It does -not- ensure devices aren't unmounted before the FS on them is finished.

[Bug 1833161] Re: [HDA-Intel - HDA Intel PCH, playback] No sound at all

2019-06-18 Thread Jean-Philippe Roberge
Excellent! Thank you so much Hui Wang!

Everything works perfectly now, thanks to your advice about upgrading
the kernel. My headphones, speakers and microphone work all perfectly
fine now, this is solved.

Just a note: I had already tried the "clevo-p950" as an option, but it
was not working at all (not even the headphones) with the kernel version
I had, which was 4.18.0-22. However, as soon as I updated the kernel to
5.0.2-050002 everything worked perfectly with clevo-p950. Also, I didn't
upgrade my kernel version to the most recent stable version (i.e. 5.1.11
at the time of writing), only because my nvidia driver wasn't working
fine on that specific kernel (I didn't investigate why).

Anyway, bottom line is, everything works perfectly now with the
"clevo-p950" option and kernel 5.0.2. Thanks a lot Hui Wang, I'm very
grateful!

It looks like commit 4762aa45d9ea2f5146a135eda6b840bf3964b317 is the fix
here. Not sure. It's not in any official PulseAudio release yet.

Pulseaudio crashed randomly while watching a YouTube video in
fullscreen. When crashing the last 1 second or so of audio looped for a
few seconds, then cut out. I am using PulseEffects as well, which
crashed around the same time. Whether that was the cause or a result of
  the PulseAudio crash is unclear.

I am using Bionic because the video drivers for my AMD Raven Ridge iGPU
are not supported by earlier versions.

But since you mentioned that you discovered further issues, and more packages
were added as being affected, I'll leave further updates up to you.

No, the bug fixing process isn't that predictable. They are actively

[Bug 1828495] Re: [KVM][CLX] CPUID_7_0_EDX_ARCH_CAPABILITIES is not enabled in VM.

2019-06-18 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
Hi pragyansri,
If you track the progress on the merge proposal that is linked this looks good
atm and will soon be in a PPA [2] with proposed changes for pre-evaluation with
Bionic/Cosmic/Disco/Eoan.

>From there the next steps are:
- test the new feature from the PPA on cascade lake machines
- general regression tests
- Once we know it works (Tests on newer kernels) will need to also involve the
kernel Team to also backport the kernel patches
- if the above look good as well it will become an SRU [1]
- The SRU processing will have it reviewed by the SRU Team, then land in
proposed to be final verified and then be released to be available

Sorry if that seems slow to you, but the changes are complex and we
don't want to rush things - if you read the SRU [1] policy you'll see
that the steady tradeoff of stability-vs-fixes is important to be done
with the focus of avoiding regressions.

[Bug 1831154] Re: [needs-packaging] ubuntustudio-menu-add

2019-06-18 Thread Len Ovens
Applied patch, Thank you. Found that "array-based execution" did not
work. The filename was not passed to the executable. So it was changed
back to the working "string-based execution". Yes I am running on the
latest LTS (18.04) and yes it should work there as well as the current
cycle. See line 415 to 418.

Left the indents as spaces, even though I have no idea why 4 spaces
would be preferred to 1 tab.

[Bug 1833331] Re: 10mail script should use sendmail command, not the mail command

2019-06-18 Thread Christian Franke
>The 10mail script is trying to send messages with /usr/bin/mail (aka
mailx), which is a user agent, not intended for automated message
sending.

'mail' and its various variants are user agents, but also intended for
automated message sending. This is the case since the early (pre-Linux)
days.

POSIX and its predecessor say:
"Send Mode can be used by applications or users to send messages from the text
in standard input."
See:
http://pubs.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/007908799/xcu/mailx.html
http://pubs.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/9699919799/utilities/mailx.html

If no script (like smartd-runner) is specified with '-M exec' directive,
smartd also uses 'mail' as a default (see smartd_warning.sh):

mail -s "$SMARTD_SUBJECT" $SMARTD_ADDRESS

[Bug 1832138] Re: Login screen never appears on vmwgfx but installing kernel >= v4.17-rc1 (or using WaylandEnable=false) fixes it

2019-06-18 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks Pat.

That seems to confirm the 'regression-update' tag here. Although I
wouldn't be able to debug and fix the mutter change because I can't
reproduce the bug, using VMware. Mine just works :/

It sounds like good progress is being made in the kernel anyway. So I
think a fix there would be preferable. Otherwise I would just be hunting
for a way to cripple mutter to work around apparent VMware driver bugs.

[Bug 1832138] Re: Login screen never appears on vmwgfx but installing kernel >= v4.17-rc1 (or using WaylandEnable=false) fixes it

2019-06-18 Thread Pat
Daniel,
I didn't want to lose sight of your ask in comment #34.
I updated to the latest mainstream kernel, and then reverted the mutter
packages (as per comment #31).
That also fixes the problem.

Specifically, this configuration is working for me;

uname -a

Linux ubuntuvm1 4.15.0-52-generic #56-Ubuntu SMP Tue Jun 4 22:49:08 UTC
2019 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

sudo dpkg --list | grep mutter

ii gir1.2-mutter-2:amd64
3.28.3+git20190124-0ubuntu18.04.2amd64GObject introspection
data for Mutter
ii libmutter-2-0:amd64
3.28.3+git20190124-0ubuntu18.04.2amd64window manager
library from the Mutter window manager
ii mutter
3.28.3+git20190124-0ubuntu18.04.2amd64lightweight GTK+
window manager
ii mutter-common
3.28.3+git20190124-0ubuntu18.04.2all shared files for the
Mutter window manager

And display resizing also works as expected.

[Bug 1833331] [NEW] 10mail script should use sendmail command, not the mail command

2019-06-18 Thread Forest
Public bug reported:

The 10mail script is trying to send messages with /usr/bin/mail (aka
mailx), which is a user agent, not intended for automated message
sending. I believe it should be using the /usr/sbin/sendmail or
/usr/lib/sendmail command instead, as that command is meant for non-
interactive message sending.

Accordingly, the package should probably declare Recommends: default-mta
| mail-transport-agent instead of mailx | mailutils.

Use case:

The current script's use of the mail command is causing message delivery
to fail on my systems. This was at first because no mail user agent was
installed (and there should be no need for one, since there are no local
mail users.) Furthermore, even when I installed gnu mailutils in an
attempt to solve this problem, I discovered that mailutils overrides my
system's MTA configuration to use an invalid MAIL FROM address, causing
the upstream mail host to reject smartmon's outgoing messages. Several
more hours spent experimenting with mailutils configuration options just
led to one form or another of the same type of problem, all rooted in
the fact that mailutils makes assumptions that are just plain wrong on
some installations. I would like my sanity back, please. :)

As a side-effect, I've noticed that display resizing doesn't work the same.
I'm unable to resize the display to anything more than 1176 x 885 (4:3)

Great work Eric!
I installed your kernel build and it seems to work.

As confirmation of the kernel build level, here is uname -a output
immediately after install & reboot.

[Bug 1829805] Re: Lubuntu Eoan Daily Image fails to boot after install on KVM

2019-06-18 Thread TJ
We have a second bug that causes the call by update-
initramfs::get_sorted_versions() to report nothing when calling
(/usr/bin/) "linux-versions list".

This because the target root file-system is copied from the
filesystem.squashfs on the ISO which does NOT contain a
/boot/vmlinuz-$(uname -r).

calamares has a job to copy the /cdrom/casper/vmlinuz into the target
and name it correctly. The job is

contextualprocess@before_bootloader_mkdirs

but it is listed after the "initramfs" job so there is no kernel image
to get the version string from when "initramfs" executes.
"before_bootloader_mkdirs" needs moving to before "initramfs".

[Bug 1829805] Re: Lubuntu Eoan Daily Image fails to boot after install on KVM

2019-06-18 Thread TJ
I should have made clear, this 'second bug' is the only bug.

initrmafs-tools is in the clear - it wasn't finding a kernel image
because there wasn't one when update-initramfs was executed.

[Bug 1829805] Re: Lubuntu Eoan Daily Image fails to boot after install on KVM

2019-06-18 Thread TJ
Or is it? Actually I not, because the test in update-
initramfs::get_sorted_versions() expects an existing
initrd.img-$version:

get_sorted_versions()
{
version_list="$(
linux-version list |
while read -r version; do
  test -e "${BOOTDIR}/initrd.img-$version" && echo
"$version"
done |
linux-version sort --reverse
)"
verbose "Available versions: ${version_list}"
}

I confused myself because I'd added a workaround for this in calamares by
executing a shell

"touch /boot/initrd.img-$(uname -r)"

and forgotten it was there whilst chasing the missing kernel!

d = refresh

Can you elaborate on that?
