[Bug 1837117] Re: Laptop backlight is off after system boot up

2019-07-24 Thread Po-Hsu Lin
** Description changed:

- After kernel update the backlight on my Asus eeepc 1005px becomes off
- during boot up. I can see the login screen if I point light to the
- screen. The backlight is not reacting on brightness adjustment keys. The
- backlight starts working only if I close and open the laptop lid.
+ == SRU Justification ==
+ Commit 78f3ac76d9e5 ("platform/x86: asus-wmi: Tell the EC the OS will
+ handle the display off hotkey") causes the backlight to be permanently off
+ on various EeePC laptop models using the eeepc-wmi driver (Asus EeePC
+ 1015BX, Asus EeePC 1025C).
+
+ == Fix ==
+ * 1dd93f87 (platform/x86: asus-wmi: Only Tell EC the OS will handle
+ display hotkeys from asus_nb_wmi)
+
+ This patch addes a .wmi_backlight_set_devstate quirk for specific
+ models to make asus_wmi_set_devstate(ASUS_WMI_DEVID_BACKLIGHT, 2, NULL)
+ conditional.
+
+ Only X/D contain the commit that introduce this issue (78f3ac76), this
+ patch can be cherry-picked into D.
+
+ For X, it needs some content adjustment to add quirks only to those
+ models that exist in Xenial tree.
+
+ == Test ==
+ Test kernels could be found here:
+ https://people.canonical.com/~phlin/kernel/lp-1837117-eeepc/
+
+ Bug reporter has verified that this fix works as expected on X.
+
+ == Regression Potential ==
+ Low, quirks limited to specific ASUS laptops and by far there is no
+ further change to this in upstream kernel.
+
+
+ == Original Bug Report ==
+ After kernel update the backlight on my Asus eeepc 1005px becomes off during
boot up. I can see the login screen if I point light to the screen. The
backlight is not reacting on brightness adjustment keys. The backlight starts
working only if I close and open the laptop lid.

  I have tried to:
  * echo 10 > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness
  * echo 125 > /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness
  * vbetool dpms on
  * pass "acpi_backlight=vendor" kernel parameter
  * install gdm instead of lightdm
  * create /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/80-backlight.conf with content
recommended in Kernel/Debugging/Backlight Wiki article
  with no luck.

  The backlight works fine if I pass "acpi_osi=" kernel parameter, the
  brightness is adjusted by keys, but the applet does not react to
  adjustments.

[Bug 1764087] Re: Wrongly boots into low graphics mode using kernel 4.13.0-38 (mostly works with 4.13.0-37)

2019-07-24 Thread Dave Goldsbrough
I forgot all about this bug until the tag of cscc was added.

As reported previously the machine is now running 18.04.2 LTS fairly
well. All updates including kernels have been done,

Graphics now state Intel® Ironlake Mobile and the /etc/default/grub file
contains the line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"

So all is well with the world.

[Bug 1837833] [NEW] EBS Volumes get stuck detaching from AWS instances

2019-07-24 Thread Matthew Ruffell
Public bug reported:

On AWS, it is possible to get a EBS volume stuck in the detaching state,
where it is not present in lsblk or lspci, but the cloud console says
the volume is detaching, and pci / nvme errors are output to dmesg every
180 seconds.

To reproduce reliably:

1) Start a AWS instance. Can be any type, nitro or regular. I have
successfully reproduced on m5.large and t3.small. Add an extra volume
during creation, of any size.

2) Connect to the instance. lsblk and lspci show the nvme device there.
Detach the volume from the web console. It will detach successfully.
You can attach and then detach the volume again, and it will also work
successfully.

3) With the volume detached, reboot the instance. I do "sudo reboot".

4) When the instance comes back up and you have logged in, attach the
volume.

dmesg will have (normal):

kernel: [   67] pci :00:1f.0: [1d0f:8061] type 00 class 0x010802
kernel: [   67] pci :00:1f.0: reg 0x10: [mem 0x-0x3fff]
kernel: [   67] pci :00:1f.0: BAR 0: assigned [mem 0x8000-0x80003fff]
kernel: [   67] nvme nvme1: pci function :00:1f.0
kernel: [   67] nvme :00:1f.0: enabling device ( -> 0002)
kernel: [ 67] ACPI: PCI Interrupt Link [LNKC] enabled at IRQ 10

5) Detach the volume from the web console. If you keep refreshing the volume
view, you will see the volume in the detaching state and the volume is still
in use.

The device will be missing from lsblk and lspci.

dmesg will print these messages every 180 seconds:

4.4 -> 4.15

kernel: [  603] pci :00:1f.0: [1d0f:8061] type 00 class 0x010802
kernel: [  603] pci :00:1f.0: reg 0x10: [mem 0x8000-0x80003fff]
kernel: [  603] pci :00:1f.0: BAR 0: assigned [mem 0x8000-0x80003fff]
kernel: [  603] nvme nvme1: pci function :00:1f.0
kernel: [ 603] nvme nvme1: failed to mark controller live
kernel: [ 603] nvme nvme1: Removing after probe failure status: 0

Latest mainline kernel:

kernel: [  243] pci :00:1f.0: [1d0f:8061] type 00 class 0x010802
kernel: [  243] pci :00:1f.0: reg 0x10: [mem 0xc000-0xc0003fff]
kernel: [  243] pci :00:1f.0: BAR 0: assigned [mem 0xc000-0xc0003fff]
kernel: [  243] nvme nvme1: pci function :00:1f.0
kernel: [ 244] nvme nvme1: failed to mark controller CONNECTING
kernel: [ 244] nvme nvme1: Removing after probe failure status: 0

The volume is now stuck detaching and the above will continue until you
forcefully detach the volume.

This seems to effect all distributions and all kernels.
I have tested xenial, bionic, bionic + hwe, bionic + eoan,
bionic + mainline 5.2.2, rhel8 and Amazon Linux 2. All are affected with the
same symptoms.

I tried to trace NVMe on 5.2, but with not much success on finding any problem:

[Bug 1826050] Re: package grub-efi-amd64-signed 1.115+2.02+dfsg1-12ubuntu2 failed to install/upgrade: installed grub-efi-amd64-signed package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit st

2019-07-24 Thread Eldon Rosenberg
Hey all,

Trying to be a helpful chap, I looked into a verbosity level 2 (-v2)
output of efibootmgr, which is what's executed by the post-installation
script of the grub-efi-amd64-signed package:

$ sudo efibootmgr -v2 -c -d /dev/sdb -p 2 -w -L ubuntu -l
\EFI\ubuntu\shimx64.efi
Could not prepare Boot variable: Invalid argument
error trace:

directory

 efibootmgr.c:323 make_var(): efi_set_variable failed: Invalid argument
 efibootmgr.c:333 make_var(): Could not set variable Boot0005: Invalid argument

...and I submit that this is likely caused by the bug in the efivar package
documented as recently fixed at https://github.com/rhboot/efivar/issues/120, as
it talks about the fact that the uid node doesn't exist, only hid and cid (in
my case, Ubuntu 19.04 on a HP Probook 6550b with kernel 5.0.0-21-generic, it's
hid only). I have libefivar1 version 37-2 installed.

[Bug 1836500] Re: Starting vm hangs after upgrading open-vm-tools from 2:10.3.5-7~ubuntu0.18.04.1

2019-07-24 Thread Jonathan Saks
Hi, I’m a colleague of Oliver’s at VMware and was looking at the
internal bug he filed for this. I installed Ubuntu 18.04.1 in a VM
under Player 1 and after running sudo apt-get upgrade within the guest I
got the same symptom that Lars reported. However, similar to what
Christian reported in comment #1, I found that updating only open-vm-
tools did not cause the symptom.

Uncommenting the line WaylandEnable=false in /etc/gdm3/custom.conf as
described in the following link allowed the login screen to work
properly:

   https://askubuntu.com/questions/1149957/unable-to-login-to-account-
in-ubuntu-18-04-vmware-workstation-15-after-update

Lars, from your last update I'm not sure if you're still trying to work
with Ubuntu 18.04.1 but if so maybe you could try this same solution and
see if it clears the problem you're having there. If that solution is
not sufficient, the link above contains additional information including
another link which might be helpful.

Regards,

Jonathan Saks

[Bug 1837813] Re: Bionic update: upstream stable patchset 2019-07-24

2019-07-24 Thread Kamal Mostafa
** Description changed:

  SRU Justification

  Impact:
     The upstream process for stable tree updates is quite similar
     in scope to the Ubuntu SRU process, e.g., each patch has to
     demonstrably fix a bug, and each patch is vetted by upstream
     by originating either directly from a mainline/stable Linux tree or
     a minimally backported form of that patch. The following upstream
     stable patches should be included in the Ubuntu kernel:

     upstream stable patchset 2019-07-24

- Ported from the following upstream stable releases:
- v4.14.102, v4.19.24,
- v4.14.103, v4.19.25,
- v4.14.104, v4.19.26,
- v4.14.105, v4.19.27,
