Perfect, thanks Dimitri for the explanation!
I mostly wanted to avoid that there are explicit, yet unknown to me,
reasons for not doing so which was answered.

[Bug 1839271] Re: [MIR] zsys

2019-09-01 Thread Didier Roche
Hey Seth,

While I agree with this goal, I don't feel this is realistic without a focused
effort within the distro itself as a global goal as I explained in detailed in
my answer:
- most of those deps are shared between snapd, juju, ubuntu-report and zsys at
least (like the yaml config parser). All of them are using vendoring. I don't
feel we should only have the new entree separately or the other will never be
ported, and so, we will have no gain doing that work.
- I don't feel it's fair and realistic to have zsys doing this work alone for
the eoan time-goal while it was ok for the others to skip this process. (Hence
the "should that be a goal for the LTS?"). Note that between direct and
transitive deps, we have 31 packages to MIR.
- As stated before, even if zsys we were doing that work for zsys, MIRing all
dependencies, we are not sure that other projects like snapd could transition.
Indeed, most of those modules are version 0.x, and they are breaking their API
quite regularly. So the version zsys is compatible with wouldn't be the version
snapd, or juju, or ubuntu-report will be compatible with.

Is there a way to set that to a particular release goal and answer all
the above?

[Bug 1842271] [NEW] Infinite loop in __blkdev_issue_discard() consumes the entire system memory when formatting a raid array

2019-09-01 Thread Matthew Ruffell
Public bug reported:

BugLink: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1842271

[Impact]

There is a regression present in block in 4.15.0-56, which causes the
machine to consume all system memory and cause the OOM reaper to come
out, when attempting to format a newly created raid array on a series of
NVMe cluster with an xfs filesystem.

The symptoms can be found with all system memory ending up in
kmalloc-256 slab, with a nondescript call trace being printed.

The problem is caused by the below two commits:

commit 3c2f83d8bcbedeb89efcaf55ae64a99dce9d7e34
Author: Ming Lei
Date:   Fri Oct 12 15:53:10 2018 +0800
Subject: block: don't deal with discard limit in blkdev_issue_discard()

commit b515257f186e532e0668f7deabcb04b5d27505cf
Author: Ming Lei
Date:   Mon Oct 29 20:57:17 2018 +0800
Subject: block: make sure discard bio is aligned with logical block size
BugLink: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1836802
Upstream-commit: 1adfc5e4136f5967d591c399aff95b3b035f16b7
Pastebin: https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/TcnTck64PJ/

Now, the fault was triggered in two stages. Firstly, in "block: don't
deal with discard limit in blkdev_issue_discard()" a while loop was
changed such that there is a possibility of an infinite loop if
__blkdev_issue_discard() is called with nr_sects > 0 and req_sects
somehow becomes 0:

int __blkdev_issue_discard(..., sector_t nr_sects, ...)
{
...
while (nr_sects) {
unsigned int req_sects = nr_sects;
sector_t end_sect;

end_sect = sector + req_sects;
...
nr_sects -= req_sects;
sector = end_sect;
...
}

if req_sects is 0, then end_sect is always equal to sector, and the most
important part, nr_sects is only decremented in one place, by req_sects,
which if 0, would lead to the infinite loop condition.

Now, since req_sects is initially equal to nr_sects, the loop would
never be entered in the first place if nr_sects is 0.

This is where the second commit, "block: make sure discard bio is
aligned with logical block size" comes in.

This commit adds a line to the above loop, to allow req_sects to be set
to a new value:

int __blkdev_issue_discard(..., sector_t nr_sects, ...)
{
...
while (nr_sects) {
unsigned int req_sects = nr_sects;
sector_t end_sect;

req_sects = min(req_sects, bio_allowed_max_sectors(q));

end_sect = sector + req_sects;
...
nr_sects -= req_sects;
sector = end_sect;
...
}

We see that req_sects will now be the minimum of itself and
bio_allowed_max_sectors(q), a new function introduced by the same
commit.

static inline unsigned int bio_allowed_max_sectors(struct request_queue *q)
{
   return round_down(UINT_MAX, queue_logical_block_size(q)) >> 9;
}

queue_logical_block_size(q) queries the hardware for the logical block
size of the underlying device.

static inline unsigned short queue_logical_block_size(struct request_queue *q)
{
int retval = 512;

if (q && q->limits.logical_block_size)
retval = q->limits.logical_block_size;

return retval;
}

if q->limits.logical_block_size is 512 or smaller, then bit shifted
right by 9 yields 0.

bio_allowed_max_sectors will return 0, and the min with req_sects ==
nr_sects will favour the new 0.

This causes nr_sects to never be decremented since req_sects is 0, and
req_sects will never change since the min() that takes in itself will
always favour the 0.

>From there the infinite loop iterates and fills up the kmalloc-256 slab
with newly created bio entries, until all memory is exhausted and the
OOM reaper comes out and starts killing processes, which is ineffective
since this is a kernel memory leak.

[Fix]

The fix comes in the form of:

commit a55264933f12c2fdc28a66841c4724021e8c1caf
Author: Mikulas Patocka
Date:   Tue Jul 3 13:34:22 2018 -0400
Subject: block: fix infinite loop if the device loses discard capability
BugLink: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1837257
Upstream-commit: b88aef36b87c9787a4db724923ec4f57dfd513f3
Pastebin: https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/bgC9vQnB8x/

This adds a check right after the min(req_sects,
bio_allowed_max_sectors(q)); to test if req_sects has been set to 0, and
if it has, to exit the loop and move into failure handling:

...
req_sects = min(req_sects, bio_allowed_max_sectors(q));
if (!req_sects)
goto fail;
...

>From there things work as normal. As "block: fix infinite loop if the
device loses discard capability" points out, all of this is triggered
due to a race where if underlying device is reloaded with a metadata
table that doesn't support the discard operation, then
q->limits.max_discard_sectors is set to 0 and has a knock on effect of
setting q->limits.logical_block_size to strange values and leads to the
infinite loop and out of memory condition.

Now, as mentioned before, the fix is a part of 4.15.0-59, or linux-gcp
4.15.0-1041, which is currently sitting in -proposed.

[Bug 1836154] Re: [18.04 FEAT] zKVM: Add hardware CPU Model - qemu part

2019-09-01 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
I was checking and resetting the tests, there were some flaky results
none of them related to the actual upload.

FYI - there is one PPC fix part of the overall current ongoing SRU which
might delay the release of this change a bit. It seems it might be ok on
the qemu side, but lacking a kernel change - never the less this might
gate this for a while until resolved on the kernel side or stripped from
this upload.

[Bug 1837700] Re: Dell system takes a long time to connect network with external dock

2019-09-01 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package systemd - 237-3ubuntu10.26

  [ You-Sheng Yang ]
  * d/p/d/Revert-udev-network-device-renaming-immediately-give.patch:
- udev: drop Revert-udev-network-device-renaming-immediately-give.patch
  The removing patch was for the already deprecated
  "75-persistent-net-generator.rules" based interface renaming mechanism,
  and it's causing unnecessary problem when a system happends to NICs with
  same MAC address, e.g. Dell's MAC address pass-thru. (LP: #1837700)

  [ Shih-Yuan Lee (FourDollars) ]
  * d/p/hwdb-revert-airplane-mode-keys-handling-on-Dell.patch:
- hwdb: revert airplane mode keys handling on Dell
  That reverts some commits those created double key events issues on some
  Dell laptops. (LP: #1740894)

[Bug 1842020] Re: ceph patch as of 8/29 segfaults all bluestore osds

2019-09-01 Thread Harry Coin
Upstream has two approaches to a solution. One was to disable sdpk
except for development versions because the spdk folks set their lowest
usable software level to corei7. I couldn't get that patch to work in
the ubuntu packaging 'apt-get source ceph'.

I was able to get the patch working that edited the two files mentioned
in the above-- editing the memcpy code and commenting out the corei7.

What I would like to see, and see as a general solution that might set
canonical apart from others in a good way is:

when compiling using dpkg-buildpackage ...
a canonical-wide flag that overrides whatever -msse and -march might be the
defaults and replace that with -march=native.

In that way, those who want to compile a package to get best performance
(or any performance) on a particular machine can make it 'just work'.

[Bug 1842264] [NEW] live-server install with encrypted volumes run update-initramfs twice

2019-09-01 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I installed my shiny new NVMe laptop with the server installer last
week. The curtin invocation took about 100 seconds which is pretty good,
but it ended up running update-initramfs twice, at 15 seconds each --
once when the kernel was installed and once after crypttab had been
copied to the target system. I guess this is pretty minor at the end of
the day, but it would be nice to avoid it if we could somehow.

[Bug 1842267] [NEW] GNOME randomes window locations in its favorite pop-out

2019-09-01 Thread Jeffrey Walton
Public bug reported:

I'm working on Ubuntu 18.04, fully patched with dist-upgrade.

I layout 4 terminals as shown in the attached image. The order of the
favorite pop-out is top-to-bottom: (a) is (1) top left, (b) is (2)
bottom left, (c) is (3) top right, and (d) is (4) bottom right.

After the favorite pop-out window closes, GNOME will randomize the order
in the favorite pop-out. As an example, (a) in the pop-out may become
terminal (3), and (d) in the pop-out may become terminal (1). It is
incredibly annoying behavior since I can't quickly jump back to the
terminal (1) by clicking the (a) pop-out.

For me, each terminal is used for a specific task. I usually have 8 or
10 terminals open. I might have Emacs open in Terminal (1), a cp command
in terminal (2), and a compiler in terminal (3). I try to quickly rotate
among them to get work done.

[Bug 1842133] Re: findutils shows wrong version number

2019-09-01 Thread Keith Thompson
> First off: Ubuntu/Debian do not ship "patched version of the GNU findutils
> package [...] based on release 4.6.0".

OK. When I do "apt-get source findutils" I get a
"findutils_4.6.0+git+20170828-2.debian.tar.xz"
file that does include two patches, but neither of them seems to be relevant to
this issue.

The "findutils_4.6.0+git+20170828.orig.tar.xz" file I get from the same apt-get
command
unpacks to a "findutils-4.7.0-gitfindutils-4.7.0-git" directory.

I just built findutils revision febde26dd0e66dda5d4060fa29b85443ddc6a865 from
source, and
the resulting "find" command does print "find (GNU findutils) 4.7.0-git" when
invoked with
"--version". So it seems to be an upstream issue. "info findutils", which
loads
/usr/share/info/find.info.gz, also reports version 4.7.0-git.

Whatever the cause, I suggest that "4.7.0-git" is misleading, since release
4.7.0 did not
yet exist.

I could submit a bug report against the upstream findutils component.
Should I do so?

(To be clear, I'm not saying this is a major, or even necessarily
significant, problem.)

[Bug 1841906] [NEW] Default behaviour of netplan will generate SAME DHCP identifier when VM is cloned?

2019-09-01 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I am working on vSphere and trying to deploy multiple VMs w/ Ubuntu
Bionic Server(18.04.2) on it. However I found that if I export an
running VM and re-deploy them multiple times. I will get a bunch of VMs
w/ different BIOS UUID BUT EXACTLY SAME DHCP identifier. Thus it
confused DHCP server and all VMs got EXACTLY SAME ip.

I do understand that it is generating something UNIQUE... but simply
clone the vm will not change this identifier

Thanks.

It looks to be very CPU-busy, mostly in the gnome-shell process. We are
working to reduce the CPU load and increase the performance of gnome-
shell but it will take some time. You will see a definite improvement in
