hp dx6120mt (mini-tower, pentium 4 dual core, 3gb, winfast clone of nvidia

install vlc` on live system for test, once installed it failed to start
from terminal or menu in same manner as amd64 18.04 or 19.10

Lubuntu 18.04 daily (2019-09-15)

Vlc is not installed by default on 18.04 (mpv is used), however adding it via
`apt install` during live session has same issue as with eoan/1910; it won't
start from menu or terminal.
Thanks to Rik Mills & Matthias

This was done on a QA-test on 18.04 daily; however it won't be recorded
as a critical bug there due to vlc not being installed on default ISO
for Lubuntu. I'll endeavor to check x86 too.

[Bug 1843507] Re: apt-get update to latest libidn2.so.0 causes multiple application failures including apt-update

2019-09-15 Thread Garrett Leyenaar
This temporary workaround worked for me:

$ wget
http://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu/pool/main/libi/libidn2/libidn2-0_2.0.4-1.1build2_amd64.deb
$ sudo dpkg -i libidn2-0_2.0.4-1.1build2_amd64.deb
$ sudo apt-mark hold libidn2-0

With that said, I want to avoid problems in the future so at what point
should I remove the hold on libidn2-0? I host a few websites so anything
that messes up PHP brings down all my websites. Should I downgrade back
PHP 7.2 (Ubuntu 18 default) and remove the Ondrej ppa?

[Bug 399709] Re: add-apt-repository creates read-only sources.list

2019-09-15 Thread Jarno Suni
** Description changed:

  by default `sudo add-apt-repository ppa:username` creates a file
  /etc/apt/sources.list.d/username-ppa-karmic.list with the default umask-

- only be root
+ only by root

[Bug 1817321] Re: installer does not support iSCSI iBFT

2019-09-15 Thread Doug Smythies
the source code for the serverguide is migrating to a different markup
language for 20.04. The migration was done a few days before these
revisions were committed. They need to be copied to the new source. I am
attempting to add "target to series" stuff to this bug report, but it is
not working, like other ones I have done already.

Newly installed Ubuntu 19.04 system. AMD Ryzen 3700X. NVIDIA GeForce RTX

do is reboot. Afterwards, /var/log/kern.log shows lines like

2019-09-15 Thread Paul Gevers
Public bug reported:

In version 1.2.4+ds1-1 I removed the dependency on php-php-gettext as it
has no security support in Debian and has been removed from bullseye.
However, I was informed wrongly that this was optional and now
translations are broken.

See upstream bugs https://github.com/Cacti/cacti/issues/2508 and
https://github.com/Cacti/cacti/issues/2924

As Ubuntu still has php-php-gettext, just adding the dependency back is
probably the best way forward for Eoan Ermine.

[Bug 1827790] Re: Dell XPS 13 9380 - Screen brightness flashes

2019-09-15 Thread Ben Bromley
Huh, I wonder if this is a Gnome Shell issue and not a kernel issue
after all. After switching to Ubuntu Mate, and uninstalling the kernel
mentioned above, I have not had a flicker yet. Anecdotally, I have also
heard of people installing KDE on an XPS 13 9380 and also not having
this issue.

[Bug 1844067] [NEW] Merge ibus 1.5.21-1~exp2 (main) from Debian experimental (main)

2019-09-15 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Public bug reported:

Upstream released ibus 1.5.21 on 2019-08-23, and it's available in
Debian experimental. It would be good if this could make it into eoan,
so a recent IBus version gets 'tested' in 19.10 as a preparation for
next LTS.

the changes in 1.5.20 and 1.5.21. They are both micro releases and don't
introduce new features.

Found something interesting as well.

I had accidentally left the speaker-test running and closed the laptop
without shutting it down. When the laptop was opened again ubuntu opened
from sleep, sound was playing. However do note that I had run those
commands in the same session.

So something that takes the system to sleep and back from sleep is
allowing sound to come back again.

Will retry without running the commands after warm re-booting from
windows again.

[Bug 1743247] Re: B2 Python APIs are missing

2019-09-15 Thread Kenneth Loafman
Actually, no. The latest and best duplicity versions are in the ppa
package. Ubuntu, and others, lock the version when a release is made.
For example, version 0.7.19 is the current version in the ppa, but it's
not in any apt repository. Instead, much earlier versions are there and
do not get fixes or improvements, so I normally recommend upgrading
using the duplicity ppa with apt.

As to pip, much the same goes there. There are versions on pip that far
exceed what is on the distro's apt repository. Some of those are needed
to keep the duplicity backends running, since the hosts may randomly
change the API after successfully getting the last version working.

It's not apt I don't like, it does it's job. It's the policy of locked
versions that causes me a lot of grief and needless bug reports for
packages that are years older than they should be.

[Bug 1823076] Re: System wakes up immediately after suspend if Bluetooth is still enabled

2019-09-15 Thread Vadym Abramchuck
I can confirm the same is happening to me at Disco running on Dell XPS
13 9380.

Disabling wakeup for XHC a sort of helps, however, it also disables
wakeup for a touchpad; I suppose this is because pci::00:14.0 is a
USB controller so everything under USB bus is disabled.

[Bug 1838725] Re: Plymouth fails to display graphical splash screens on some machines, shows text mode dots animation instead.

2019-09-15 Thread shemgp
I think plymouth is trying to load the png without it being mounted yet?
If you look at the debug log and search for loading lock image you will
see that there's an error on the first load but there's another one
where it's successful. The first is when booting, the second is when I
press esc, so maybe at boot, /usr/share/plymouth/themes/spinner was
still not mounted but on pressing esc it can find it already.

Thanks for looking into this.

[Bug 1842382] Re: /proc/self/maps paths missing on live session (was vlc won't start; eoan 19.10 ubuntu/lubuntu/kubuntu/xubuntu/ubuntu-mate daily)

2019-09-15 Thread Matthias Kruzenski
The reason why vlc does not start is definitely the overlay filesystem.

How can I know that?

I use Ubuntu on a fully encrypted USB stick with overlay root filesystem
(which makes the USB super fast, even faster than ssd).

To enable the overlay root filesystem I use the following initramfs script:
https://gist.github.com/niun/34c945d70753fc9e2cc7

(FYI: the script has a little bug, it can not handle tabulators in
fstab, you have to fix that if you want use it for testing, just insert
tr "\t" ' ' before grep -v ' / ')

You can disable this script with the kernel command line parameter
disable-root-to=yes.

I tested, once with overlay fs and once without overlay fs. vlc starts
as long as you do not use overlay fs. But it does not start with enabled
overlay fs.

Therefore, the reason must be the overlay filesystem. It can be assumed
that thus bug affects all systems that use overlay fs. Not only debian
but all distributions. Therefore, I would give this bug a high priority.

In addition, my strace looks a bit different than the strace that has
been posted here (see attachment). Last 5 lines:

mmap2(NULL, 26374, PROT_READ, MAP_SHARED, 3, 0) = 0xb7f94000
close(3)= 0
futex(0xb7f2bfe4, FUTEX_WAKE_PRIVATE, 2147483647) = 0
exit_group(1)   = ?
+++ exited with 1 +++

I suspect the futex () call fails.

The bug probably has nothing to do with /proc/self/maps.

[Bug 1800196] Re: spice-vdagent[1345]: Cannot access vdagent virtio channel /dev/virtio-ports/com.redhat.spice.0

2019-09-15 Thread yas
Hi all,
I've found this messages in systemd journal but in my case it was a bare metal
install of Ubuntu 18.04, so I don't see the need to have spice-vdagent
installed (that I understand is for virtual machine guest). Remove it is not an
option because it will remove ubuntu-desktop.
I tried then to disable it with:
$ sudo systemctl disable spice-vdagent

But that was not enough. I found that it was being launched on startup (and
that created the error and warning in the logs) so I located the
spice-vdagent.desktop in different locations. Finally I found a solution
confirming the way to disable it here:
https://access.redhat.com/solutions/2990871

Basically adding the line:
X-GNOME-Autostart-enabled=false

To the files:
/etc/xdg/autostart/spice-vdagent.desktop
/usr/share/gdm/autostart/LoginWindow/spice-vdagent.desktop

Then stop and disable the service:
$ sudo systemctl stop spice-vdagentd
$ sudo systemctl disable spice-vdagentd

If I understand my case right this service should not be part of initialization
if the installation is not a virtual machine supporting spice.
Hope this helps others with similar case, regards.

[Bug 1844055] [NEW] Importing public key from keys.openpgp.org fails with "no user ID"

2019-09-15 Thread Tom Reynolds
Public bug reported:

Running (up to date) 18.04 LTS I'm trying to import a public key from
the somewhat new but OpenPGP key spamming resistant key server at
keys.openpgp.org:

$ curl -s
'https://keys.openpgp.org/vks/v1/by-fingerprint/723E343AC00331F03473E6837BE5A11FA37E8721'
 | gpg --import
gpg: key 0x7BE5A11FA37E8721: no user ID
gpg: Total number processed: 1
$

This key fails to import (GPG does not report that any keys were
imported).

$ gpg --version | head -n2
gpg (GnuPG) 2.2.4
libgcrypt 1.8.1
$

This makes it impossible to use most of the keys stored on the
keys.openpgp.org keyserver and forces users (who want / need to use key
servers) to instead work with SKS keyservers which do not prevent
signature spamming, on a GPG build which lacks fixes against signature
spamming. Which puts Ubuntu 18.04 LTS users at great risk of becoming
victims of signature spamming, breaking their GPG installations in ways
which are difficult to debug.

This issue has been previously discussed and solved in Debian at
https://bugs.debian.org/930665

[Bug 1842349] Re: Reconsider conditions for setting language and formats

2019-09-15 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package accountsservice - 0.6.55-0ubuntu10

---
accountsservice (0.6.55-0ubuntu10) eoan; urgency=medium

  * debian/patches/0010-set-language.patch:
- Make the Language and FormatsLocale properties in the keyfile be
  in sync with ~/.pam_environment. In principle this restores the
  behavior to the state before 0.6.50 (LP: #1842349).
  * debian/patches/0016-add-input-sources-support.patch:
- Refreshed the src/user.c chunks.

[Bug 1757375] Re: Desktop unable to Suspend when Inactive

2019-09-15 Thread Douglas Silva
** Description changed:

- On 16.04 (XFCE session and others) and possibly later the power-manager
- is unable to suspend the system when the user is inactive. A PK user-
- agent dialog is presented for the user to authenticate first - and as
- this action occurs specifically when the user is idle and away the PC
- can end up having an unplanned loss of power when the battery is
- exhausted.
+ On Ubuntu 16.04 and later versions (Xfce/Xubuntu) the power-manager is
+ unable to suspend the system when the user is inactive. A PK user-agent
+ dialog is presented for the user to authenticate first - and as this
+ action occurs specifically when the user is idle and away the PC can end
+ up having an unplanned loss of power when the battery is exhausted.

  /var/log/auth.log shows:

  polkitd(authority=local): Operator of unix-session:c2 FAILED to
  authenticate to gain authorization for action
  org.freedesktop.login1.suspend for system-bus-name::1.47 [xfce4-power-
  manager --restart --sm-client-id 2992705d4-6fa2-4fba-966c-f7631ecd0b46]
  (owned by unix-user:tj)

  The problem seems to be "com.ubuntu.desktop.pkla" is missing an entry to
  allow Suspend. Currently it only has an entry for hibernate.

  Adding the following stanza solves the issue:

  [Enable suspend by default in logind]
  Identity=unix-user:*

Action=org.freedesktop.login1.suspend;org.freedesktop.login1.inhibit-handle-suspend-key;org.freedesktop.login1;org.freedesktop.login1.suspend-multiple-sessions;org.freedesktop.login1.suspend-ignore-inhibit

I would take a look at the Stable Release Updates to get that specific
fix added to the 18.04 release, see
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates#Procedure for more details.

>As a side note: bugnr #906958, in launchpad, seems unrelated.

It's refering to the Debian bug number, see the attached bug watch.
