[Bug 1633319] Re: memory leak in indicator-datetime

2020-01-26 Thread Jeff Silverman
I had the same problem. Sunk over a day into trying to figure it out.
I'm taking no chances: I removed evolution. I might reinstall it
sometime when I am no under such a crunch.

What I find really frustrating is that I would expect the OOM (Out of
Memory) killer to recognize that the process had consumed 14 GBytes of
virtual memory and kill it, but it didn't. I would argue that if a user
space process that can bring a system to its knees, then there is
something else wrong with the system. I don't know enough about kernel
internals to put my finger on it, and I am in a bit of time crunch right
now.

[Bug 1858776] Re: Intel Bluetooth AX201 HarrisonPeak (HrP) [8086:06f0] subsystem [8086:4070] firmware causes system hang in deep suspend

2020-01-26 Thread You-Sheng Yang
** Description changed:

+ [SRU Justification]
+
+ [Impact]
+ Platforms with Intel Bluetooth AX201 HarrisonPeak (HrP) [8086:06f0] subsystem
+ [8086:4070] may hang system during suspend if it has ever been paired with BLE
+ devices.
+
+ [Fix]
+ Update bluetooth firmware intel/ibt-19-0-4.sfi to REL0318 or newer.
+
+ [Test Case]
+ 1. pair with BLE devices. They doesn't have to stay connected/powered on
+during the test.
+ 2. make sure Bluetooth is now receiving LE ADV broadcats, which should
+leave messages in dmesg like:
+
+ Bluetooth: hci0: advertising data len corrected
+
+ 3. suspend the system a few times to see if SUT is still resumed unexpectedly
+within a short period (< 1 minute).
+
+ [Regression Risk]
+ Low. This change only updates firmware blob for the specific hardware
+ affected.
+
+ [Other Info]
+ Same case in a resolved bug 1850738, which we SRU-ed intel/ibt-19-0-0.sfi at
the
+ time. This time we've checked the corresponding models refering to blobs in
this
+ REL0318 update, and find intel/ibt-19-0-4.sfi is the only one affected.

[Bug 1857673] Re: System will auto resume from sleep on receiving LE ADV after paired with BT LE devices (Intel 9560 HrP)

2020-01-26 Thread You-Sheng Yang
** Description changed:

+ [SRU Justification]
+
+ [Impact]
+ On some platform, with Intel 9560 Bluetooth fw ver REL0450, deep
+ suspend (S3) will be interrupted and resume automatically once it has
+ been paired with a BLE device. The device doesn't have to remain
+ connected, as long as there are BLE devices near by broadcasting LE

+
+ [Fix]
+ This can be fixed with newer release of fw blob
+ intel/ibt-17-16-1.sfi. This patch will SRU 0482 to keep synced with
+ Eoan.
+
+ [Test Case]
+ 1. pair with BLE device and turn off the device. It should be listed
+as Disconnected in System Bluetooth settings. Close the settings
+app as well.
+ 2. run `sudo btmon -t` in the background, make sure LE ADV packets
+pop up.
+ 3. run `sudo btmon -t` on another host to make sure there are LE ADV
+packets during the suspend period.
+ 3. trigger system deep suspend (S3) on DUT.
+ 4. wait for around 1 minutes (depending on the surrounding
+environment) and see if the DUT is resumed unsolicitedly.
+
+ [Regression Risk]
+ Low. Update only affected systems.
+
+ == original bug description ==
+
Similar to bug 1849779, on systems with Intel 9560 Bluetooth fw ver
REL0450, deep suspend will be interrupted and resume automatically once
it has been paired with a BLE device. The device doesn't have to remain
connected, as long as there are BLE devices near by broadcasting LE ADV.

This can be fixed by updating intel/ibt-17-16-1.sfi from upstream commit

  firmware.git/commit/?id=b6427bf4faae9b8864e303d88c3ec8d0df017dac.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. pair with BLE device and turn off the device. It should be listed as
Disconnected in System Bluetooth settings. Close the settings app as well.
  2. run `sudo btmon -t` in the background, make sure LE ADV packets pop up.
  3. run `sudo btmon -t` on another host to make sure there are LE ADV packets
during the suspend period.
  3. trigger system deep suspend (S3) on DUT.
  4. wait for around 1 minutes (depending on the surrounding environment) and
see if the DUT is resumed unsolicitedly.

  Expects:
DUT only resumes when power button pressed or on other explicit requests.

  Actual:
DUT resumes unsolicitedly within 1 minutes.

[Bug 1860954] [NEW] b43 WiFi monitor mode doesn't work with BCM4321 card

2020-01-26 Thread Boris Gjenero
Public bug reported:

My Inspiron 6400 laptop has a Dell Wireless 1500 Draft 802.11n WLAN
Mini-Card with BCM4321 chip. I was using airmon-ng from aircrack-ng to
enter monitor mode. It claims the chipset is "non-mac80211 device?
(report this!)" but I think that's incorrect information and only
cosmetic. It does create the monitor device. Then I was using Wireshark
to capture packets from that device. I was only getting beacon, probe
request and probe response packets, despite knowing that there was data
on the network.

As a workaround, it is possible to properly monitor by using a different
driver, from the broadcom-sta-dkms package. After installing that
package and rebooting, I couldn't connect to my wireless network
anymore, but I could "echo 1 | sudo tee /proc/brcm_monitor0" to create a
prism0 device. Changing channels was a problem, maybe requiring a change
on the associated non-monitor device before enabling the monitor. But
capture on prism0 worked great. I was getting all kinds of packets and
was able to decrypt data in Wireshark after enabling "Assume packets
have FCS". Even though I couldn't connect to my network, I could capture
and decrypt its traffic. Rebooting seems required for switching from b43
to wl drivers, because otherwise the wl driver doesn't start properly.

Ok thanks for your reply. Will keep bug open.

I'm not seeing that here with either Ubuntu 18.04 or 20.04 although I
don't seem to be able to add an iTunes podcast series URL manually. May
be that's why the search is there? But I can add individual iTunes
podcasts manually.

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/rhythmbox/issues/1283 is open upstream
but has seen no activity for some time.

[Bug 1860947] Re: package libqt4-sql:amd64 4:4.8.7+dfsg-7ubuntu3 failed to install/upgrade: package is in a very bad inconsistent state; you should reinstall it before attempting a removal

2020-01-26 Thread Chris Guiver
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

Bug reporting is about finding & fixing problems thus preventing future
users from hitting the same bug. You seem to need support more than have
issues with a bug

You appear to be using out-dated disco (19.04) packages
(https://packages.ubuntu.com/search?suite=all&arch=any&searchon=names&keywords=python2.7),
and haven't described why or how this applies.

Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your description
didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How
to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures.

At a minimum, we need:
1. The specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem.
2. The behavior you expected.
3. The behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).

I believe a Support site would be more appropriate, eg.
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu (this bug report can be converted
to a question (which is aimed at support)). You can also find help with
your problem in the support forum of your local Ubuntu community
http://loco.ubuntu.com/ or asking at https://askubuntu.com or
https://ubuntuforums.org, or for more support options please look at
https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/community-support/709

I'm going to mark this bug incomplete, as it appears as if you haven't
followed the normal support procedures first. If however you believe I'm
in error, please leave a comment with details and change the status back
to "New".

2020-01-26 Thread Andras Muranyi
>From https://askubuntu.com/questions/1153506/how-do-i-enable-all-keys-
on-the-touchscreen-keyboard :

The GNOME On Screen Keyboard (OSK) is designed to generate keyboards
from the Unicode Common Locale Data Repository data. The Unicode CLDR
was never intended to limit the keys available, but that seems to be the
path the GNOME developers are following. If a key isn't in the CLDR,
there is no way to type it. So, that means, no Esc, no F1, no Control,
etc.

If Ubuntu think that this is the correct way, fine with me. But Gnome3
is not the only Desktop, and some users *might* want interesting stuff,
too. So I leave this to the Ubuntu maintainers.

(Debian maintainer here)

[Bug 1797717] Re: fstrim -av tries to trim read only mounted ntfs-3g and fails

2020-01-26 Thread Boris Gjenero
Right now in 19.10, /lib/systemd/system/fstrim.service runs /sbin/fstrim
--fstab --verbose --quiet , which doesn't cause the service to report
these errors. According to the fstrim man page, for the --fstab option:
"Errors from filesystems that do not support the discard operation,
read-only devices and read-only filesystems are silently ignored."

So, I consider this fixed now. Feel free to close the issue.

2020-01-26 Thread Ian
Accidentally switched while a vlc video was paused, went '$%^&' and
switched back, stopped the video (i.e. the black screen).

On my system, syslog gets so many errors doing that, it grows by roughly
111,652 lines or 20,990,575 bytes per second!

[Bug 1860938] [NEW] Sound interruptions during high radeon OpenGL load

2020-01-26 Thread Boris Gjenero
Public bug reported:

On my Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop with Mobility Radeon X1400 and built in
Intel HDA audio with STAC9200 codec, audio is normally perfect. Even
with 100% load on both CPU cores audio is perfect. However, while
playing high resolution video, audio has many tiny regular interruptions
which can be like crackles or micro stuttering. This happens when
playing 1080p YouTube video in Chrome or 1080p video via VLC using the
OpenGL output. Other high GPU load, like scrolling Google Maps around a
lot in Chrome, can also cause these interruptions. They don't only
affect the application causing graphical load, but also affect other
applications playing audio, like mpg123.

I've changed bdl_pos_adj, position_fix and enable_msi parameters of the
snd_hda_intel module. Maybe bdl_pos_adj=64 and position_fix=1 makes it a
bit better, but I'm not certain and it's certainly still not okay. I
tried interrupt priorities as described in
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuStudio/rtirq and that didn't help.
Changing latency via setpci seems not applicable because this laptop
uses PCI Express. Not running PulseAudio and using ALSA instead doesn't
help. Running a bare-bones X configuration with twm doesn't help.

Configuring VLC to use XVideo video output makes audio perfect with the
same video which was causing these interruptions when using OpenGL video
output.

[Bug 1860822] Re: ptrace fails with yama/ptrace_scope=0

2020-01-26 Thread jklowden
Seth, thank you kindly for your prompt and clear answer. I modified
server.c and confirm that gdb can now attach to the child process.
Although prctl(PR_SET_DUMPABLE, 1) has no effect (and returns 0!) when
called before resetting privileges, it works after the gid has been
reset to the debugging process's gid.

I see where it's documented now. PR_SET_DUMPABLE is not mentioned in
/etc/sysctl.d/10-ptrace.conf, but ptrace_scope in procfs(5) refers us to
ptrace(2), which says, under PTRACE_ATTACH, "Processes that are not
dumpable ... can not be attached via ptrace(2) PTRACE_ATTACH." The
elided text refers to prctl(2), wherein the description of
PR_SET_DUMPABLE describes how processes come to have their dumpable flag
reset to 0. It's all there if you know where to look.

Yet that's a bit thin, isn't it? I missed it, and my question on SO
failed to elicit any pointer to PR_SET_DUMPABLE. IMO the gdb message in
response to failing to attach is too wordy and basic. The focus on
ptrace is almost misdirection, insofar as PTRACE_ATTACH is controlled by
the union of ptrace_scope and the dumpable flag.

I'm not sure what to suggest. A note in the gdb man page would be good.
Maybe best would a file in /usr/share/doc/linux-doc describing
debugging, dumpability, and ptrace from a programmer's point of view.
ISTM one shouldn't have to understand the ptrace(2) syscall to use gdb
on running processes.

Thanks again for your help.

[Bug 1850439] Re: No sound on ASUS UX534FT

2020-01-26 Thread Colin Gelling
I have recently bought a Zenbook flip 15 ux563fd and spend an entire day
on fixing sound, tried multiple kernels and switched between Ubuntu
18.04 and Ubuntu 19.10. Got all the updates, reinstalled pulseaudio,
checked alsamixer to make sure every needed option was on, tried
changing permissions but nothing fixes it. When I play something with
sound, I will see inside the pulseaudio configuration at 'Output
Devices' that there is something playing and the same for the
microphone.

2020-01-26 Thread Michael Hudson-Doyle
This is because "lsb_release -d" does not contain "LTS" yet on focal.
When it does, the text used here follows this template:

Welcome to the Ubuntu Server Installer!

The most popular server Linux in the cloud and data centre, you can
rely on Ubuntu Server and its five years of guaranteed free upgrades.

The installer will guide you through installing Ubuntu Server
{release} LTS.

The installer only requires the up and down arrow keys, space (or
return) and the occasional bit of typing.

This is version {snap_version} of the installer.

ZFS support is not going to happen for 20.04. Did you get the impression
it would from somewhere?

[Bug 1860935] [NEW] Unable to pair to Bluetooth earbuds on Eoan (MPOW M5)

2020-01-26 Thread Johnny Ooi
Public bug reported:

This is a clean install of Eoan (although I have copied the home
directory files from my previous installation, though I don't think that
should affect this problem)

[Bug 1848856] Re: zfs on root fails with grub syntax error with multidisks pools

2020-01-26 Thread Brian Elliott Finley via ubuntu-bugs
On Ubuntu 19.10, with ZFS root and zfs-auto-snapshot,
/etc/grub.d/10_linux_zfs was scanning every single snapshot whenever
update-grub was invoked.

This is a simple patch that just exits the get_dataset_info() function
if the dataset is a snapshot. I could be missing something, but I don't
expect we want to be finding kernel & initrd images on snapshots under
normal circumstances.

** Patch added: "Simple four line patch I created that solved my issue"
