[Bug 1835660] Re: initramfs unpacking failed

2020-04-16 Thread John Gilmore
This happened for me yesterday, when booting the main Ubuntu 20.04 beta
x86_64 iso on real hardware (not a virtual machine). It has a graphical
splash screen but in the upper left corner I get this "console" message.
Then eventually in a few seconds, after it has fully booted, that splash
screen is replaced and the system has booted up fine. But it's a worry-
producing message that should really not be there. If the kernel is
actually able to handle the stock ISO's initramfs, then please change
the kernel boot process to not produce an error message when there is no
error.

[Bug 1873386] Re: nmcli error report on reboot after latest 20.04 updates

2020-04-16 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To
help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

3. If step 2 also failed then apply the workaround from bug 994921,
reboot, reproduce the crash, and retry step 1.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

Much better than the 100% fail rate we had before since the gettimeofday header

If the rate goes up again we can consider adding the fix, but for now
I'd think unbreaking the upgrade to focal is more urgent and we should
go on releasing this change.

[Bug 1873083] Re: Lenovo Yoga C940 frequently does thermal shutdown

Anyway, I have checked that Windows keeps the temperature under control
on the same machine, by throttling CPU.

Shouldn't thermald also do it out of the box, not requiring hand-written config
files?
Or maybe something is missing in my thermal_zone3, like there are no links to
related cooling devices. And there is no thermal_zone3/mode to disable it...

I have posted the whole contents of thermal_zone3 in comment #10

[Bug 1861655] Comment bridged from LTC Bugzilla

2020-04-16 Thread bugproxy
--- Comment From mranw...@us.ibm.com 2020-04-17 01:59 EDT---
I think this bug has gone through a few different actual problems to where we
are now. To re-iterate, with 20.04.1+git19.3bd1382b I can successfully install
on a NVMe disk when I choose 'Use entire disk' and select that disk. If I try
to use 'Custom storage layout' to configure an install to the NVMe disk then
the install fails. This is not specific to nvme, though, I see that with a
standard disk, too. I did try that scenario in an x86 vm and it worked ok, so
it looks power specific that 'Custom storage layout' doesn't work, at least
from what I've seen.

[Bug 1864288] Re: No boot after an update.

2020-04-16 Thread Chris Guiver
I suspect a Support site would be more appropriate, eg.
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu. You can also find help with your
problem in the support forum of your local Ubuntu community
http://loco.ubuntu.com/ or asking at https://askubuntu.com or
https://ubuntuforums.org, or for more support options please look at
https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/community-support/709

However they may not be able to help you, as your description reads as
more hardware related (did you run memtest, do a cap-check of your
motherboard or other steps etc), and thus other hardware support sites
maybe more on-topic.

If it doesn't get as far as loading grub (the boot loader) as indicated
in your description, then the kernel hasn't been loaded & kernel
upgrades aren't an issue (as they aren't loaded being loaded by grub),
ie. you have support issues).

Install / to sda9 (no format), /home to sda8 (no format). Calamares at

however I noted in Overview it stated

"Install Lubuntu on ext4 system partition /dev/sda9
Set up ext4 partition /dev/sda8 with mount point /home.
Install boot loader on /dev/fd0"

I've done 3 installs before today on this box; no issues with /dev/fd0;
the difference in this install was floppy was inserted in the drive. In
prior tests reported here I ejected floppy after boot or before clicking
install. This time I did not.

When installer got to boot loader step, floppy LED came on & I could
hear the floppy drive write data & skip to next track, and click-click
as it moved between tracks.

Eventually it came to error message

[Bug 1832222] Re: using aakar font reboots printer

2020-04-16 Thread Allan Dyer
I re-tested in preparation for submitting the bug to Debian, and the problem
has disappeared.
Something has changed in the 10 months since my report, the package is still
Version: 1.0-6ubuntu0.1, but plenty of other packages on the system have been
updated.
As there is no way of reproducing and investigating the root cause, I'm marking
it as Invalid.

[Bug 1862553] Re: gnome-control-center crashed with SIGSEGV in cc_panel_get_title_widget()

What's happening is g-c-c is attempting to select the requested online
account setup (ubuntusso in this case) at the time it's creating the
panel. This works if the panel was already selected. Investigating
exactly why doing both at the same time crashes and how to resolve.

[Bug 1873321] Re: The Show Applications button is unclickable in the corner and along its bottom edge

I don't think this is a bug since the button doesn't reach the corner of
the screen. But rather than relying on what I say you should report the
issue to the upstream developers at:

  https://github.com/micheleg/dash-to-dock/issues

and then tell us the new bug ID.

[Bug 1861359] Re: swap storms kills interactive use

2020-04-16 Thread Seth Arnold
Andrea, I've been running the v1 kernel for a day or so now:

[0.00] Linux version 5.4.0-24-generic (arighi@sita) (gcc version
9.3.0 (Ubuntu 9.3.0-10ubuntu1)) #28+lp1861359v1 SMP Wed Apr 15 14:49:33
UTC 2020 (Ubuntu 5.4.0-24.28+lp1861359v1-generic 5.4.30)

$ uptime
 02:21:45 up 1 day, 9 min, 14 users, load average: 0.42, 0.25, 0.23

and have not seen any hangs or stalls of any sort in the ~ten hours that
I've been using it.

Normally these problems start to appear about a day into use, so it's
perhaps still early to declare success, but this is looking promising.

Even loading https://platform.leolabs.space/visualization in firefox
just causes momentary glitches in mouse movement, like 50ms kind of
range. (I know this range is pretty poor for humans to tell, but it sure
feels like less than half a second by a lot.)

Thanks

[Bug 1873316] Re: bluetooth

2020-04-16 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Your kernel shows some recurring problems with Bluetooth:

[205443.289468] Bluetooth: hci0: command 0x1001 tx timeout
...
[205451.385131] Bluetooth: hci0: CSR: Local version failed (-110)

"CSR" sounds like Cambridge Silicon Radio, which is a brand of Bluetooth

[Bug 1872366] Re: ubuntu forcal-desktop-amd64 could not install to geforce 8600GTI PC

2020-04-16 Thread Seiichi Nakashima
Dear everyone.

I download forcal-desktop-amd64.iso(2020-04-16 17:28 2.5G),
setup grub(40_custom), and boot up iso file.
then double click install ubuntu 20.04 LTS icon.

keyboard layout section, so long time(I think may hung up),
but select Japanese layout well, and install finished.

reboot PC, and nVidia 340.108 driver used to change OSS driver,
and update to use software-updater, reboot again.
I think it work fine.

[Bug 1873257] Re: gnome-shell crashes randomly

2020-04-16 Thread Daniel van Vugt

[Bug 1814983] Re: zfs poor sustained read performance from ssd pool

2020-04-16 Thread Seth Arnold
Writing 8589934592 (eight gigs) into the zfs_arc_dnode_limit seemed to
make an improvement: the arc_prune threads would periodically spike
above 20% CPU use, but would return to 2-5% CPU use quickly; it worked
well for a long time, perhaps even hours, before all the arc_prune
threads returned to ~50% CPU use.

I tried one gigabyte for a bit but the arc_prune threads returned
quickly. Tuning this may take a bit.

Thanks for the tip.

hp 8200 elite sff (i5-2400, 8gb, nvidia quadro 600)

this behavior again; firefox window as opened can be seen at this picture
(next comment will include firefox window maximized)

(closing and re-opening firefox and the reaction is the same; it's
related to monitor position; if I play with it (position relative to
each other) I can cause this issue to go away (keep monitors attached
unticked) or return (have keep.monitors.attached ticked & they'll snap
together and have this issue regularly). The panel should be on top
monitor according to upstream; it should have moved & I should have been
unable to have it put there, but I can move & put it back.. )

this and you'd need more detailed version info, or if it is configurable
somewhere.

I am pretty sure that on Fedora 11 my bluetooth was off after reboot
(and I had the option to turn it on with the applet on my panel). That's
why I'd consider this a regression.

Funny thing: if I change in /etc/bluetooth/main.conf InitiallyPowered =
true to false, and reboot, the applet will show that white x in red on
its icon, to say that bluetooth is off. However, the bluetooth LED is
still on, so in that case the applet shows incorrect information.

So maybe this is a bug in bluez (which owns that
/etc/bluetooth/main.conf), that it does not honor the setting (and
provides bad info to the applet as well)? But I don't see a component
bluez in bugzilla to report it ...

Another finding: even if the icon of the applet shows that bluetooth is
off, when I click it, the status is shown as On, and I have the option
to "Turn Off Bluetooth". When I turn if off, the LED goes off as well.
When I then turn in on again, the LED goes on, but the icon on the panel
still shows that red/white "off" sign.

Definitely not a regression, if anything, it's a kernel one. The ibm-
laptop (or whatever the kernel module is called for Thinkpads) module
changed behaviour.

Nope. Check the output of "hciconfig hci0", you'll see that the device
is enabled, just not powered. The hardware has no ways to know that...

This is a BIOS bug. gnome-bluetooth doesn't hold *any* information as to
the state of Bluetooth, and bluetoothd (somewhat) remembers the state of
the device. The problem is that when it's hard-blocked, eg. disabled in
hardware, bluetoothd has no Bluetooth devices to remember the set
