[Bug 1888570] [NEW] poweroff not working after apt upgrade

2020-07-22 Thread Günter Neiß
Public bug reported:

System-Information:
Description:Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS
Release:18.04
##
Working packages:
- Kernel 5.3.0.61.114
- linux-firmware 1.173.18

Problem occurs when upgrading (anyone of) these packages
- Kernel 5.3.0-62.56
- linux-firmware 1.173.19

I use an Acer Aspire E5-771G Notebook with a fresh installation of Ubuntu 18.04.
Till the last upgrade everything works as expected.
The last upgrade brings two new kernel versions (as mentioned above).
Now the system stucks at the very end of the power down sequence.
Even SysReq-O will not work (only SysReq-B will work).

Because I use Systemback, I time shift to the previous system and then install
package by package to see what will bring in the problem.
If I install any of the mentioned kernel updates the problem will show up.

I had ask the above question on "askubuntu.com".
I was directed to upgrade the BIOS, But even after doing so the problem still
persist.

I am not sure if I do it right (APT pinning).
I currently create a file /etc/apt/prefereces.d/kernel.

I add an entry for every of the following packages to block the version
mentioned above (Pin: version: Pin-Priority: -1):

linux-generic-hwe-18.04
linux-headers-generic-hwe-18.04
linux-image-generic-hwe-18.04
linux-modules-nvidia-440-generic-hwe-18.04
linux-firmware

After doing so "apt list --upgradeable" will not list the packages in
question and the PC will power down normally (and SysReq-O WILL work).

In the meanwhile there are newer versions of the kernel online, so the above
mentioned pinning will allow the newer kernels to get installed and the problem
will show up again.
So I block these versions too.

BTW: Due to the stuck I am able to see some other error messages that are not
reported in the journal. The very last 3-5 lines show:
shutdown [1]: Failed to wait for process: Protocol error
These lines are present although in the working kernels, but hard to see,
because the system powers down some ms after these lines are displayed!
This problem seams to be solved more than one year ago in the upstream kernel!

[Bug 1888567] [NEW] Touchpad do not recognized

2020-07-22 Thread Daniel Payno Zarceño
Public bug reported:

Hello,

I have recently installed Kubuntu 20.04 (dual boot with Windows 10) and
the touchpad is not recognized. I typed: cat /proc/bus/input/devices but
it doesn't show nothing related to the touchpad. Besides, in "System
preferences" a message is shown "Touchpad not found". I checked in the
Driver Manager for updates but I can't found any drivers.

Thanks

[Bug 1888423] Re: ras-mc-ctl doesn't provide BDF for PCIe errors

2020-07-22 Thread dann frazier
** Description changed:

  [Impact]
rasdaemon provides a ras-mc-ctl, a tool for querying the rasdaemon database.
When displaying PCIe AER events from the
database, it doesn't provide any information to identify the associated PCIe
device. This information is already stored in the database (has been since
0.6.5 in focal), so we just need to update ras-mc-ctl to display it as well.

  [Test Case]
+ - Trigger an AER event (how to do so appears to be pretty platform-specific).
+ - Check for the Bus/device/function info in the output of ras-mc-ctl.

  [Fix]

https://github.com/mchehab/rasdaemon/commit/059a901e97f4091e31c50ce55027daf707638f8d

  [Regression Risk]
+ The change here adds additional content to the output of ras-mc-ctl. Instead
of something like this:
+
+ PCIe AER events:
+ 1 2020-04-16 22:09:48 + Corrected error: Receiver Error
+ 2 2020-04-16 22:23:24 + Corrected error: Receiver Error
+
+ You'll now see something like this:
+ PCIe AER events:
+ 1 2020-04-16 22:09:48 + :0b:00.0 Corrected error: Receiver Error
+ 2 2020-04-16 22:23:24 + :0b:00.0 Corrected error: Receiver Error
+
+ As with any such unstructured output, it's possible that a user has some
+ code to parse the output that would be confused by the additional
+ content.

+  - Check for the Bus/device/function info in the output of ras-mc-ctl.

  [Fix]

https://github.com/mchehab/rasdaemon/commit/059a901e97f4091e31c50ce55027daf707638f8d

  [Regression Risk]
The change here adds additional content to the output of ras-mc-ctl. Instead
of something like this:

  PCIe AER events:
  1 2020-04-16 22:09:48 + Corrected error: Receiver Error
  2 2020-04-16 22:23:24 + Corrected error: Receiver Error

You'll now see something like this:
  PCIe AER events:
  1 2020-04-16 22:09:48 + :0b:00.0 Corrected error: Receiver Error
  2 2020-04-16 22:23:24 + :0b:00.0 Corrected error: Receiver Error

As with any such unstructured output, it's possible that a user has some
code to parse the output that would be confused by the additional
  content.

[Bug 1888381] Re: net test from ubuntu_kernel_selftest will timeout on B-5.0

2020-07-22 Thread Thadeu Lima de Souza Cascardo
Kleber has identified the backport of commit 692d7b5d1f91 ("tls: Fix
recvmsg() to be able to peek across multiple records") as the
responsible for this regression.

It turns out this commit has 4 fixups upstream, 3 of which can be easily
cherry picked, while the fourth one seems related to TLS 1.3 support,
which is not included in our 5.0 kernels yet.

Picking those 3 commits allow the tests to pass without issues.

** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+ Partial reads on TLS sockets will cause processes to wait indefinitively.
+
+ [Test case]
+ Run tls net selftests from the kernel source tree.
+
+ [Regression potential]
+ We only touch code on the TLS socket family itself, so regressions on
subsystems other than the one we are fixing is highly unlikely.
+
+
+
+
  Issue found on:
  linux-gke-5.0 - 5.0.0-1045.46 / 5.0.0-1044.45

The net test in ubuntu_kernel_selftests will timeout and gets killed,

[Bug 1888523] Re: PCIe Bus Error device 8086:a298 spam

2020-07-22 Thread Alex Hung
When a PCIe AER error is captured, an error message will be output to
console. If it's a correctable error, it is output as a warning.
Otherwise, it is printed as an error. So users could choose different
log level to filter out correctable error messages.

[Bug 1838329] Re: Cryptswap periodically fails to mount at boot due to missing a udev notification

2020-07-22 Thread Dan Streetman
I wasn't able to reproduce this myself, due to the failure being
dependent on timing, but I set up the reproducer from the upstream bug
and rebooted several times with the proposed package, and had no
problems/regressions. Marking this verified.

[Bug 1888523] Re: PCIe Bus Error device 8086:a298 spam

2020-07-22 Thread Alex Hung
PCI(e) is capable of correcting errors whenever possible. From your logs
all of the errors are corrected and therefore nothing to worry about.

If you see incorrectable errors you may observed device failures, or
system failures in some cases.

Public bug reported:

SRU Justification

Impact:
The upstream process for stable tree updates is quite similar

[Bug 1888558] [NEW] VLC is using up to 2 GB of RAM just to play a regular 720px HD video

2020-07-22 Thread Wirawan Purwanto
Public bug reported:

On my computer running Ubuntu 20.04 and XFCE desktop, The VLC GUI player
is using an increasing amount of memory as time progressed. The video is
a typical H.264 movie (MP4 file format). I have let the application sit
for a few days, and here is the usage of RAM as the days went by:

Date Time(EDT) VSIZE RSS
2020-07-19 20:19:162848984455148
2020-07-20 13:09:063307736926156
2020-07-22 13:18:054487464 2059848

The process itself was started on:
Sat Jul 18 21:41:24 2020

I was playing the video only for about ~5 minutes when the program
started, then let the program sit idle for a few days. Today I found
that it consumed 2GB RSS as shown above!

I am reporting this issue to see if something in my system is messing up
VLC memory usage. In an older laptop, trying to play the same file (with
VLC version 2.0.3) has its memory consumption starting at just under
190M.

[Bug 1887206] Re: package zfsutils-linux 0.8.3-1ubuntu12.1 failed to install/upgrade: installed zfsutils-linux package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 1

2020-07-22 Thread Olivier Coursière
Maybe i have selected the wrong kernel entry when booting : it was a
fresh 20.04 install over an existing 18.04 one (update was not working).

[Bug 1879707] Re: [UBUNTU 20.04] mke2fs dasd(fba), Failing CCW, default ERP has run out of retries and failed

2020-07-22 Thread Frank Heimes
I just wanted to try the kernel that I've build yesterday (see comment #6) and
as a first step I wanted to recreate re-create the described error situation on
an up to date 20.04 system:
$ lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description:Ubuntu 20.04 LTS
Release:20.04
Codename: focal
$ uname -a
Linux zlin42 5.4.0-40-generic #44-Ubuntu SMP Mon Jun 22 23:57:33 UTC 2020 s390x
s390x s390x GNU/Linux
$ apt-cache policy linux-generic
linux-generic:
  Installed: 5.4.0.40.43
  Candidate: 5.4.0.40.43
  Version table:
 *** 5.4.0.40.43 500
500 http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports focal-updates/main s390x
Packages
500 http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports focal-security/main s390x
Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 5.4.0.26.32 500
500 http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports focal/main s390x Packages
$

But by surprise I didn't ran into any problems!

I was able to flawlessly make use of FBA devices in the following three
different way:
1) (re-)used a FBA device that was previously in use, without wiping out any
data
2) used a FBA device that I wiped out using wipefs
3) used a FBA device that I entirely wiped out (and zeroed) using dd
(see the attached doc for more details)

Looks like a fix for this problem came in with the kernels that were rolled out
in between 5.4.0-29-generic and 5.4.0-40-generic.
(Again I didn't installed the patched kernel, I just used the latest official
one.)

Message to the initial bug reporter:
Please can you retry on an up-to-date 20.04 system (or after having updated
your existing one, like for example with "sudo apt -y -q update && sudo apt -y
-q full-upgrade" plus reboot in case the kernel got update, what I assume will
happen)?

[Bug 1888556] [NEW] Kernel linux-image-4.4.0-186-generic and nvidia drivers

2020-07-22 Thread angros47
Public bug reported:

After updating my kernel to linux-image-4.4.0-186-generic yesterday in
Ubuntu 16.04, the screen resolution dropped, because it stopped using
the nvidia drivers.

After reverting back to linux-image-4.4.0-185-generic all got back to
normality.

2020-07-22 Thread Damiön la Bagh
This is interesting. When running gnome-shell in Wayland the window
placement seems to be correct. I've been testing it a bit.

Unfortunately Wayland doesn't allow for remote desktop access so I can't
help my customers when something goes wrong.

2020-07-22 Thread Brian Murray
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1069133 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1069133

Reviewing the files from your upgrade attempt you seem to have enabled a
PPA that provides Xorg packages. This will prevent the upgrade as that
PPA contains package version numbers greater than the release to which
you are upgrading. You can revert the PPA by installing the ppa-purge
package from the official Ubuntu archive and then running 'sudo ppa-
purge ppa:oibaf/graphics-drivers'. After that you can try upgrading
again and if it still fails open a new bug report. Thanks and good
luck!

@Salvador Ortiz:

I wasn't posting to get you to remove your post, just letting you know
that so far "no action" has taken place here . . . in spite of a fair
number of folks who have been affected by it.

@Julian:

I'm not sure what "inactionable" means, or why you would say "we don't
want a menu" . . . when, for multi-booting we generally would want a
menu? Compared to the usual 1 or 2 people on a bug this is quite a bit
more . . . I found problems with "UEFI" as possibly involved . . . other
people found work arounds . . . but a "bug" is a "bug" . . . and should
be "actionable" or investigated until solution found?? If people are
"complaining" then what is the basis of that complaint??

[Bug 1888551] [NEW] perf vendor events s390: Add new deflate counters for IBM z15

2020-07-22 Thread Sultan Alsawaf
Public bug reported:

SRU Justification:
==

[Impact]

* With perf from Ubuntu 20.04 on IBM z15 hardware, some counters
reported with lscpumf are not usable with 'perf stat -e'.

* 'lscpumf -c' provides a list of available counters, but the following
are not usable: DFLT_ACCESS, DFLT_CYCLES, DFLT_CC, DFLT_CCERROR

* 'perf list' is also not offering these counters.

* On the kernel side this is fixed with the following upstream accepted
commit:

[Fix]

* e7950166e40271c025e0eec348cdf5c63ac734fa "perf vendor events s390: Add
new deflate counters for IBM z15"

[Test Case]

* Requires the fix/patch of the kernel
(d68d5d51dc898895b4e15bea52e5668ca9e76180 "s390/cpum_cf: Add new
extended counters for IBM z15")

* An IBM z15 (or LinuxONE III) system with Ubuntu 20.04 installed in
LPAR is needed where the counters are enabled in the activation profile.

* Use 'perf list' to determine if the counters DFLT_ACCESS, DFLT_CYCLES,
DFLT_CC, DFLT_CCERROR are listed

* Use 'perf stat -e' to enable amd make use of these counters.

[Regression Potential]

* The regression can be considered as low, since:

* it's architecture specific (s390x)

* limited to IBM z15 hardware

* and only additional (s390x) hardware counters are defined and added.

[Other]

* Since these patches are upstream in kernel 5.7 they will automatically
land in groovy.

After updating your package information, the essential package

no official mirrors listed in your software sources, or because of
excessive load on the mirror you are using. See /etc/apt/sources.list

[Bug 1888543] [NEW] hwclock: fails to set time on glibc 2.31

2020-07-22 Thread Jakob Haufe
Public bug reported:

With glibc 2.31, hwclock from busybox is unable to set the system time
due to the changes in settimeofday behavior.

The problem has been reported upstream in [1] which also contains a
patch.

hwclock from busybox is important as it's used on the Raspberry Pi to set the
system
time when an RTC is present.

This bug applies to focal and groovy.

[Bug 1866859] Re: SRU: backport Python 3.7.8 and 3.8.5 to bionic

2020-07-22 Thread Matthias Klose
** Summary changed:

- SRU: backport Python 3.7.8 and 3.8.4 to bionic
+ SRU: backport Python 3.7.8 and 3.8.5 to bionic

** Description changed:

This is a follow-up to LP: #1835737, backporting Python 3.7.8 and Python
- 3.8.4 to bionic.
+ 3.8.5 to bionic.

The packages are not used by default (Python 3.6 is the default), so
there is no regression potential for the packages.

Changed packages are the binary packages built from the python3-stdlib-
extensions source package. No change for the files shipped for 3.6.

The python3.8-doc package isn't built, because a newer sphinx version
that the one in bionic is required.

[Bug 1888526] Re: (L)ubuntu breaks functionality by tmpfs for /tmp

2020-07-22 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1888526/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

Re: [Bug 1863434] Re: 20.04 grub menu not visible

2020-07-22 Thread Salvador Ortiz
Hello Fritz,

Thank you for your attention.

I understand that it is a place for bug reports. My intention was to
indicate that I too was experiencing this bug. I added the phrase "please
help!" to the end of my post simply to imply a sense of urgency. I decided
to report that I was experiencing the bug only after combing through many
forums, both those of Canonical as well as third party forums.

Many of the issues posted to the forums appear to be related to Ubuntu
installations concurrent to existing Windows installations. This is not the
case here. Nonetheless, I've tried many of the solutions presented on the
forums for both single installations as well as concurrent installations
but, unfortunately, none had made any progress in resolving my issue.

In the end, I was able to resolve the issue by reinstalling Ubuntu over my
old installation. This did not resolve the issue, however, but a solution
that worked for the user *orlapa* last May worked for me:

https://medium.com/@leijerry888/get-grub-menu-back-after-installing-
ubuntu-20-04-alongside-windows-dab5de5afc37

I also used this documentation to verify that I didn't miss anything in
trying to configure Ubuntu Desktop to run headless:

https://ubuntuusertips.wordpress.com/2014/02/19/turn-ubuntu-desktop-
into-an-headless-server/

That said, my post can be removed. I will see about removing it myself.

Thanks!

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1888523/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 1886161] Re: UU should work on roaming laptops

2020-07-22 Thread Julian Andres Klode
This is not going to happen in apt. It's a question for desktop how to
do that, probably disabling the downloading in apt, and using gnome's
package kit refresh stuff instead.

** Also affects: gnome-settings-daemon (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New
