[Bug 1884648] Re: rtl8821ce 5.5.2.1-0ubuntu3 ADT test failure with linux-5.8 5.8.0-1.2

2020-07-23 Thread You-Sheng Yang
** Description changed:

+ [SRU Justification]
+
+ [Impact]
+ rtl9921ce-dkms may fail to compile dkms modules on devices with v5.5 kernel
or newer due to kernel data structure changes.
+
+ [Fix]
+ Following changes required with modifications to fix such errors:
+ * commit ff74b75511c5 ("convert file_operations structs to proc_ops structs
for compatibility with linux 5.6") from https://github.com/tomaspinho/rtl8821ce
.
+ * commit 5e7d1302d3c4 (".mgmt_frame_register ->
.update_mgmt_frame_registrations") from
https://github.com/tomaspinho/rtl8821ce .
+ * Additional fix to "core/rtw_security.c" for v5.8 kernels.
+
+ [Test Case]
+ Verified with kernels:
+ * 5.4.0-26-generic
+ * 5.6.0-1010-oem
+ * 5.7.0-9-generic
+ * 5.8.0-1-generic
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ Low. The patches are to adopt new interface changes when compiled against new
kernels. For existing users with older kernels, they're not affected. For those
with new kernels they're still fine as that's what new kernels do.

[Bug 1888794] [NEW] During upgrade: File comparer dialog: Textarea does not expand with window

2020-07-23 Thread DarkTrick
Public bug reported:

Encountered during upgrade from 19.10 to 20.04

During the upgrade you might get asked if you want to overwrite or keep
certain files. You get a textarea that shows the differences between
files. It's not possible to enlarge that textarea. The dialog itself is
resizable, but the textarea stays the same same.

Expected:
When the dialog window gets resized, the textarea will also resize

[Bug 1822937] Re: NVIDIA settings won't write to /etc/xorg

2020-07-23 Thread Vyshynskyi Alexander
When using nvidia drivers, I get 2 Xorg logs, as I understand this is normal
behavior, since on a new system, when switching to nvidia drivers, the same
thing happens. When changing settings in nvidia-settings, the logs are updated
only in Xorg.1.log.
The settings are overwritten on reboot, than overwritten, I did not understand.
~ / .config / monitors.xml removed.

[Bug 1888656] Re: [MIR] tlp

2020-07-23 Thread Yuan-Chen Cheng
** Description changed:

Dear OEM team please complete this MIR request for tlp
    (https://github.com/linrunner/TLP)

Documentation for MIR is at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MainInclusionProcess
please see requirements section, and fill out the below template with
  information.

  [Availability]
  tlp is available in universe.

  [Rationale]
tlp is the tool to configure system power behaviours. it's the tool used
in projects that need power consumption criteria.

  [Security]
tlp is a tool to configure the system based on config file
  (mostly kernel parameter).
It's developer is still active. Given the way it work, there
  seems no CVE exists yet.

  [Quality assurance]
oem team use this tool more than 2 years, and it works fine along
  the way.
upstream bugs are mostly kind of feature requests:
- https://github.com/linrunner/TLP/issues
+   https://github.com/linrunner/TLP/issues
Due to it's nature, tlp usually expose kernel bug. There usually
no major bug in tlp itself.

  [Dependencies]
it depends on ethtool which already in main.
- (note that tlp source package generate tlp and tlp-
+  (note that tlp source package generate tlp and tlp-rdw

  [Standards compliance]
tlp exists in debian for years. It's quite standard shell scripts.

  [Maintenance]
  owning team: TBD

  [Background information]
For project that demand power consumption criteria, tlp is the tool we
use the configure the kernel parameters so that it can pass standard like
energy-star, etc. Given we'd like close the gap between oem and stock ubuntu,
it should be the right way to switch to main.

[Bug 1888746] Re: graphics performance very poor

2020-07-23 Thread Daniel van Vugt
That's usually a kernel or driver problem and yours is very old. You
will need to upgrade to a newer version of Ubuntu. That may fix your
problems, but it's also required to get any further support from us.

[Bug 1888746] Re: graphics performance very poor

2020-07-23 Thread WAEL M ABDELMOHDY‬‏
Thanks a lot Daniel! But I have one last thing to ask about - sorry for
this pressure - : when I make a suspend to my laptop and try to wake up
it again, the screen not get on and keep in black! So I forced make a
hard shutdown by pressing the power button.

Is this related to my graphics problem? And is there any advice can help
regarding to that!

Off course I will consider your upgrade advice to version 20.04. But for
the time being is there any other possible advice it will be great.

All the best.

Wael.

[Bug 1888785] [NEW] cursor is always default size when mouse is over the desktop

2020-07-23 Thread Tessa
Public bug reported:

Fresh install of Ubuntu 20.04, logged into a fresh KDE session.
Increased the cursor size because I'm on a high res display, and noticed
that when the mouse is over a window, the cursor size is correct, but
when it's over the desktop, it's always the default (tiny) size. This
makes it very hard to find on a virtual desktop with few application
windows.

[Bug 1888781] [NEW] failed to boot with 1.20200601+arm64-0ubuntu2~20.04.1

2020-07-23 Thread Xu Zhen
Public bug reported:

I have a raspberry pi 3b with ubuntu 20.04 armhf. It failed to boot
after upgrading linux-firmware-raspi2 from 1.20200212-0ubuntu1 to
1.20200601+arm64-0ubuntu2~20.04.1.

The HDMI monitor can't get any signal. The ACT led turned on for about
0.5 second then turned off.

I restored start.elf and fixup.dat from 1.20200212-0ubuntu1, and it
works again.

[Bug 1888778] Re: LOTRO crashes on launch gnome-shell Jul 23 21:08:36 Window manager warning: Invalid WM_TRANSIENT_FOR window 0x4200007 specified for 0x4200008 (LotroLaunc).

2020-07-23 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Generally crashing apps should not be reported as bugs against gnome-
shell. Even if gnome-shell did do anything wrong then a crash would
still be the app's fault. Or wine's fault, in which case we can track
the crash here, so...

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To
help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

3. If step 2 also failed then apply the workaround from bug 994921,
reboot, reproduce the crash, and retry step 1.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

[Bug 1888746] Re: graphics performance very poor

2020-07-23 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I don't know why the parameters would get added automatically, but it
looks like it happened twice before this bug was opened.

And you can ignore the above "WARNING" as it is not important. That's
just a bug in your text editor or its libraries.

Ideally please install Ubuntu 20.04 if you would like further support:

[Bug 1888746] Re: graphics performance very poor

2020-07-23 Thread WAEL M ABDELMOHDY‬‏
Hi Daniel!

There is a stranger thing happen with me! Those removed parameters added
again when I am checking the GNU GRUB at the system starts to boot!

Even I removed them Permanently using this command:
sudo gedit /etc/default/grub

then:
sudo update-grub

And second time when I am editing the grub using this command, I found
those lines already removed and I only have "quiet splash", but from GNU
GRUB after boot I found those lines added again!

Can you explain this stranger thing ? Please.

Also one thing to mention: after saving the grub editor , I got these warnings:
(gedit:4116): Gtk-WARNING **: Calling Inhibit failed:
GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name
org.gnome.SessionManager was not provided by any .service files

Is this warning meaning anything bad?

Thanks for your help.
Regards,
Wael.

[Bug 843431] Re: Logitech camera microphone does not work / makes "chipmunk" sound

2020-07-23 Thread Ramiro de la Pe
I have had this issue with my C270 on Windows and now on Ubuntu 20.04. So it's
mainly a Logitech issue, but on Windows I fixed it by fixing the mic on 16000
hz. On Ubuntu I tried chaging etc/pulse/daemon.conf to ; default-sample-rate =
16000
; alternate-sample-rate = 16000
and it did not work. Only for a little while.

[Bug 1666875] Re: anacron does not execute cron.daily on start or restart

2020-07-23 Thread Marcel Krause
Sorry for my misleading earlier post. Both parts were wrong.
1. ConditionACPower=no means to run on battery only; to ignore AC, it must be
empty.
2. The ANACRON_RUN_ON_BATTERY_POWER flag has no effect when anacron is launched
via systemd.

So in conclusion, it was mere coincidence that my approach had seemed to

[Bug 1888746] Re: graphics performance very poor

2020-07-23 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Weirdly your kernel command line turned off hardware graphics support
for radeon and nouveau but actually seems to have turned off Intel
hardware graphics support. It's likely that removing some or all of
these from your kernel command line will fix it:

  radeon.modeset=0 nouveau.modeset=0 i915.disable_power_well=0
video.use_native_backlight=1

But also please note that Ubuntu 14.04 reached end of standard support
in April 2019:

  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

If you would like to continue with free support then please update to a
newer Ubuntu version and tell us if the problem still occurs.

If you would like to continue with Ubuntu 14.04 then there is a paid
support option detailed at https://www.ubuntu.com/esm

[Bug 1888733] Re: Whenever reboot I am not able to see display configuration as 1440 X900

2020-07-23 Thread Daniel van Vugt
The attached logs show when it was working:

[ 299.652] (II) modeset(0): Printing probed modes for output VGA-1
[ 299.652] (II) modeset(0): Modeline "1440x900"x59.9 106.50 1440 1520 1672
1904 900 903 909 934 -hsync +vsync (55.9 kHz eP)

but that also hints at what might cause the cases when it is not
working. Analog VGA connections can be temperamental so I would
recommend unplugging and replugging the VGA cable firmly. If that does
not work then try a new VGA cable.

If the problem is still not solved then next time you get stuck in
1024x768 please run:

  xrandr > xrandr.txt
  journalctl -b0 > journal.txt

and attach the resulting text files here.

Please:

1. Clarify what symptoms you are experiencing. Is the screen freezing?
Do you have high CPU usage?

2. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if you find any then follow
these instructions:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Responses#Missing_a_crash_report_or_having_a_.crash_attachment

3. Run this command:

   gsettings list-recursively org.gnome.shell > settings.txt

[Bug 1888571] Re: [Ice Lake] Screen flickering and glitching after install

"nomodeset" will disable all hardware graphics support so it will use
high CPU and likely cause screen tearing. That's not really a solution
so you should remove "nomodeset" as soon as you can.

[Bug 1888749] [NEW] sup-mail crash after Bionic to Focal upgrade

2020-07-23 Thread Iain Parris
Public bug reported:

[Impact]

A user with the "sup-mail" package installed on Bionic (or Eoan) who
upgrades to Focal will find that "sup-mail" becomes completely unusable
after upgrading to Focal, i.e., immediately crashes at run-time.

This is because sup-mail 0.22.1 (version packaged in Bionic and Eoan) is
not compatible with Ruby 2.7, the new system Ruby version in Focal.

[Test Case]

The sup-mail package is not currently packaged in Focal.

So to simulate a Bionic to Focal upgrade, install the Bionic sup-mail
package manually on Focal, and observe that sup-mail is unusable because
it will immediately crash at runtime:

$ wget
http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/s/sup-mail/sup-mail_0.22.1-2_all.deb
$ sudo dpkg -i ./sup-mail_0.22.1-2_all.deb
$ sudo apt -f install
$ sup-mail

Crashes immediately with an error like:
--- ArgumentError from thread: main
wrong number of arguments (given 2, expected 1)
/usr/lib/ruby/vendor_ruby/sup/logger.rb:74:in `block (2 levels) in
'

To resolve: install fixed sup-mail package version 1.0-2 on Focal (e.g.,
download deb from Debian unstable or Ubuntu groovy-proposed). Observe
that there is now no crash on Focal after launching "sup-mail".

[Regression Potential]

Very low. The "sup-mail" package is currently not packaged for Focal,
and is completely unusable after upgrading from Bionic (or Eoan) to
Focal: a 100% repeatable immediate crash at runtime when running on
Focal. Because sup-mail is currently broken and unusable after upgrading
to Focal, no greater regression is possible.

"sup-mail" is a leaf package, i.e., no other packages depend on on it.
So introducing a working version of sup-mail as a new package into Focal
would be very low risk to break any other package.

Care will be required in choosing a version string for Focal, to ensure
that it is no greater than the version string used in Groovy, in order
to avoid future upgrade issues to Groovy.

[Other Info]

- I believe that introducing sup-mail into Focal would be in scope as a
SRU, due to a low potential for regressing existing installations but a
high potential for improving the user experience. Based on criteria as
documented for SRU "Other safe cases":

- I am willing to commit to ensuring that sup-mail is well-maintained in
Ubuntu in future, and have subscribed myself to be notified of all new
sup-mail Ubuntu bugs. Maintenance status upstream:

(1) Upstream project now has two new maintainers: see
. Two long-term users of Sup have
now taken over the maintenance of the upstream project, after seeing the
lack of Ruby 2.7 support previously. I am one of the new upstream co-
maintainers and have been a long-term
continuous Sup user (10+ years). The other new upstream co-maintainer is
, also a long-term user, and who for three
years has separately been one of the downstream Fedora maintainers
( for Fedora package "rpms
/rubygem-sup"). We are actively maintaining upstream, and we released
the new version 1.0 (with Ruby 2.7 support).

(2) Upstream Debian package maintained by the Debian Ruby Team now has
two new named uploaders: see .
I am one of the new named uploaders. Although I am new to Debian
maintenance, the other maintainer is Utkarsh Gupta, who is an
experienced Debian Developer.

- "sup-mail" is packaged in Bionic, Eoan, and Groovy - but not in Focal.
This is because upstream sup-mail 0.22.1-3 was removed from Debian
unstable on 2020-04-07 due to FTBFS with lack of Ruby 2.7 support. Then
a new fixed version of sup-mail 1.0-2 was reintroduced to Debian
unstable on 2020-07-22. sup-mail was therefore not in Debian unstable at
the time of Focal's Debian Import Freeze.

- Upstream Debian bug 952089, now resolved (FTBFS due to lack of Ruby
2.7 support in sup-mail 0.22.1-3) - resolved as of sup-mail 1.0-2.
https://bugs.debian.org/952089

- Raised as SRU, following IRC discussion today in #ubuntu-devel with
~lucaskanashiro (IRC nick kanashiro) and ~racb (IRC nick rbasak, part of
SRU team). After my commitment to keep sup-mail well-maintained in
Ubuntu in future, both are provisionally supportive of SRU to Focal,
subject to discussion with the wider SRU Team. IRC logs:
https://irclogs.ubuntu.com/2020/07/23/%23ubuntu-devel.txt (A big thank
you again, ~lucaskanashiro and ~racb!)

[Bug 1859873] Re: Reapply "usb: handle warm-reset port requests on hub resume"

2020-07-23 Thread Matthew Ruffell
** Description changed:

- This bug tracks the reapplication of "usb: handle warm-reset port
- requests on hub resume".
+ [Impact]
+
+ We wish to reapply "usb: handle warm-reset port requests on hub resume".

We reverted "usb: handle warm-reset port requests on hub resume" from
- the Ubuntu kernels due to a regression it introduced (bug 1856608).
- However, that patch did fix an issue for a user, and reverting it
- requires us to diverge from mainline. Once we understand and resolve the
- regression, we should reapply it.
+ the Ubuntu kernels due to a perceived regression it introduced (bug
+ 1856608).
+
+ Only one customer saw this regression, and only in very specific
+ systems. We have now determined that the root cause of the regression
+ was that the systems used defective USB cables, which had Tx and Rx
+ lines mixed up.
+
+ Signals were being sent down the wrong wires, placing the USB devices
+ into a SS_INVALID link state, and this patch simply revealed the
+ problems going on in the USB3 subsystem. USB3 devices never worked with
+ these cables, but for some reason USB2 worked, which led to the long
+ drawn out debugging timeframe.
+
+ We have confirmation from device hardware teams that USB cables on
+ affected systems have their Tx and Rx wires mixed up, and this has also
+ been confirmed by the USB cable manufacturer that these cables are a bad
+ batch.
+
+ New USB cables fix the problem, and "usb: handle warm-reset port
+ requests on hub resume" is safe to reapply.
+
+ [Fix]
+
+ We reapply upstream commit:
+
+ commit 4fdc1790e6a9ef22399c6bc6e63b80f4609f3b7e
+ Author: Jan-Marek Glogowski
+ Date: Fri Feb 1 13:52:31 2019 +0100
+ Subject: usb: handle warm-reset port requests on hub resume
+
+ To the Bionic and Eoan kernels.
+
+ This commit fixes a real problem for users of a particular external hard
+ disk, so it has value for Ubuntu users, and we do not want to diverge
+ from upstream stable patches.
+
+ [Testcase]
+
+ For users with defective non-complaint USB cables:
+
+ dmesg | grep "Cannot enable"
+
+ For users with a particular USB-C external hard disk:
+
+ The disk will work as expected when it is plugged in.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ If any users in the community happen to use USB cables with Tx and Rx
+ lines mixed up, they may see messages like:
+
+ "usb usb2-port2: Cannot enable. Maybe the USB cable is bad?"
+
+ These users need to swap out their USB cables for a non-defective one.
+
+ The commit landed in 5.1, and was backported to all stable kernels. As
+ of 5.8-rc6, the commit is still in place, and has no fixup commits. I
+ believe that re-introducing this commit will not cause any regressions
+ for users with USB compliant hardware.

2020-07-23 Thread WAEL M ABDELMOHDY‬‏
Public bug reported:

Your system is providing 3D via software rendering rather than hardware
rendering. This is a compatibility mode which should display 3D
graphics properly but the performance may be very poor. If the problem
you're reporting is related to graphics performance, your real question
may be why X didn't use hardware acceleration for your system.

[Bug 1886112] Re: Enabling DMESG_RESTRICT in Groovy Onward

2020-07-23 Thread Matthew Ruffell
I emailed Seth Forshee asking about what happens when Groovy's kernel
becomes Focal's HWE kernel, and he mentioned that the kernel team has
processes in place to handle config changes, and that it isn't a
problem.

So we will go with the more secure by default way, and enable
CONFIG_SECURITY_DMESG_RESTRICT in the kernel config.

I rebased the patches for procps and util-linux to the latest versions
in groovy and their debdiffs are attached below. Since things are quiet
on this bug I will write to ubuntu-devel shortly.

[Bug 1888598] Re: pulseaudio has is buggy with hdmi audio and sleep/wake

2020-07-23 Thread Hui Wang
I guess when you computer suspends and resumes, the hdmi/dp has a
process like plugging out (suspend) and plugging in (resume), so it
should have the same behaviour of plugging out and replugging in, no
need to run suspend and resume.

And the s/pdif audio will be active after plugging in, this is because
the s/pdif belong to which
has higher priority than .

You could do a test, update the gnome-control-center to 3.36.4-0ubuntu1
(already done), reboot, plug in the hdmi/dp cable, open the gnome-
control-center, select HDMI/DP1 or 2 in the gnome-control-center, then
plug out the hdmi/dp cable, now the output will switch to s/pdif
automatically, plug in the hdmi/dp cable, does the output switch back to
HDMI/DP1 or 2 automatcally?
