[Bug 1889509] [NEW] grub boot error : "symbol 'grub_calloc' not found

[Bug 1734147] Re: corrupted BIOS due to Intel SPI bug in kernel

2020-07-29 Thread axt
Vicky, your current issue has nothing to do with the UEFI issue in this
thread.

> I then select windows 8 and use windows 8.

Technically you only had to do an in-place upgrade to Win10.
This reliably ;-) overwrites Grub.

Officially, this has been possible free of charge for up to 1 year after
the release of Win10. With several time extensions.

Then you can install an up-to-date Linux distribution in dualboot.

But if you can boot normally from a USB stick, you don't have the
problem in this thread anyway and can install Linux as the only OS.

[Bug 1889479] Re: [groovy] "performance" cpufreq governor has a big impact on CPU consumption

2020-07-29 Thread Matthieu Baerts
** Description changed:

  Hello,

TL;DR the default cpufreq governor is now "performance" instead of
"powersave" since ondemand service is no longer shipped with systemd.

+ First, thank you for maintaining systemd in Ubuntu!

- First, thank you for maintaining systemd in Ubuntu?
+ I am using Ubuntu Devel on my daily laptop (Dell XPS 13 9730). For a few
+ weeks now, I noticed the fans of my laptop were more regularly active
+ and running at a higher speed. I took some time to investigate the
+ issue, suspecting some apps using more resources or dust causing issues.

- noticed the fans of my laptop were more regularly active and running at
- a higher speed. I took some time to investigate the issue, suspecting
- some apps using more resources or dust causing issues.
-
- But it started to annoy me and I noticed CPU frequencies were often high:
>3.5GHz while not doing intensive use, e.g. having a terminal, note app, chat,
a browser with a few active tabs for email, calendar, etc. but no video, etc. I
didn't change what I am usually doing with my laptop and I am connected to a
remote server via SSH for dev tasks.

>3.5GHz while not doing intensive use, e.g. having a terminal, note app, chat,
a browser with a few active tabs for email, calendar, etc. but no video, etc.
In total the resources the CPU usage was around 50 to 100 out of 800%. I didn't
really change what I am usually doing with my laptop compared to a few months
ago -- I even enabled more hardware accelerations working pretty well -- and I
am connected to a remote server via SSH for dev tasks.
Also, the temperature of the CPU cores were often around 70°C or more
according to s-tui and sensors.
-

  == Investigation ==

  My CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8550U CPU @ 1.80GHz

When investigating the issue, I saw the CPU frequencies were often high,
I looked at the cpufreq governor and it was set to performance:

- $ cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu*/cpufreq/scaling_governor | sort -u
- performance
+   $ cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu*/cpufreq/scaling_governor | sort -u
+   performance

Setting it to "powersave" helped to reduce the CPU freq from ~3.5GHz to
- ~2.4GHz when using the laptop with the battery:
+ ~2.4GHz for the same utilisation with the battery:

- # cpupower frequency-set --governor powersave
- (...)
- # cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu*/cpufreq/scaling_governor | sort -u
- powersave
+   # cpupower frequency-set --governor powersave
+   (...)
+   # cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu*/cpufreq/scaling_governor | sort -u
+   powersave

Reducing also the temperature by the same occasion.

- With TLP, the CPU freq are now around 800MHz when using the battery
- while still being quite reactive and increasing when needed. I
- understand it's certainly something many people would not like to have
- by default. But it is interesting to try for those who want to reduce
+ After that I tried TLP. I didn't really need it in the past but I wanted
+ to see the new behaviour. The CPU freq are now around 800MHz when using
+ the battery doing the same as before while still being quite reactive
+ and increasing when needed. I understand it's certainly something many
+ people would not like to have by default. But it is interesting to try
+ for those who want to reduce

Increasing the CPU consumptions has of course an impact on the energy
but also the comfort because of the noise of the fans can do when
running at high speed and the time you can use your device on battery.
- But also and because of the higher temperature, the battery and other
- components could have issues and the CPU clock is regularly throttled
- while not doing much:
+ Of course, because of the higher temperature, the battery and other
+ components are more likely to run into issues and the CPU clock is

[Bug 1889091] Re: When saving a copy save dialog cannot create directory on nfs share (due to apparmor)

2020-07-29 Thread Seth Arnold
Sebastien, it's hard to be confident one way or another; @{HOME} was
indeed written with the usual assumptions around home directories and it
is likely to be used that way in profiles, written both by AppArmor
upstream, Debian, Ubuntu, and whatever else profiles may be installed
and in use.

I'm sorry I can't be definitive, but it'd probably take a lot more
context to be sure.

Thanks

[Bug 1889377] Re: gnome-shell using lot of CPU (costantly 30% - often up to 100%) making my system quite slow

2020-07-29 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I found the problem. Your system only has one GPU (GeForce 9600) which
it needs the 'nouveau' driver to use. But you have disabled the
'nouveau' driver in your kernel command line:

  nouveau.modeset=0

and so gnome-shell is using software rendering, hence high CPU. So this
is not a bug.

Please remove that option from your kernel command line
(/etc/default/grub) then run:

  sudo update-grub

and reboot.

Separately, I suggest you will get much better performance using the
proprietary Nvidia driver. It seems your GPU requires Nvidia driver
version 340. To install that please open the 'Additional Drivers' app.

[Bug 1889377] Re: gnome-shell using lot of CPU (costantly 30% - often up to 100%) making my system quite slow

2020-07-29 Thread Daniel van Vugt
In future if you need to configure or analyse extensions, please use the
Extensions app (gnome-shell-extension-prefs) and not Gnome Tweaks. But
it looks like the list of extensions is still nice and short.

[Bug 1889013] Re: Screen freeze

2020-07-29 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks but that crash is from nautilus (the Files app) which is not
relevant to screen freezes. So please repeat the steps in comment #2.

If nothing can be found after following all the steps in comment #2
again then please:

 1. Reproduce the freeze again.
 2. Reboot.
 3. Run:

journalctl -b-1 > prevboot.txt

and attach the resulting text file here.

Please also ensure you do not have any custom extensions enabled by
checking the 'Extensions' app. We find a large number of bugs are caused
by extensions.

[Bug 1861936] Re: Raspberry Pi 3 network dies shortly after a burst of IPv6 tunnel network load ((lan78xx): transmit queue 0 timed out)

Recently we found the CONFIG_PREEMPT is not enabled in the ubuntu
kernel, but it is enabled in the Pi OS's kernel. We plan to enable the
CONFIG_PREEMPT in the ubuntu kernel too. So please wait for that kernel
and then test a kernel with PREEMPT enabled.

Or you could test Pi OS's kernel first. Looks like there is 5.4 Pi OS's
kernel.

[Bug 1889217] Re: Make digital mic on the AMD renoir machines work under gnome desktop

2020-07-29 Thread Hui Wang
** Description changed:

  [Impact]
On the LENOVO AMD renoir machines, there is a digital mic directly
connected to the APU instead of the codec, so there are two separate
sound cards in the system, one is for analogue codec driven by hda
driver, the other is for the dmic driven by ASoC acp driver.

  The current audio stack (pulseaudio + alsa-ucm-conf + alsa-lib) doesn't
support this design yet, it could support all audio devices on the codec
well, but it doesn't support that dmic well. In the gnome-control-center,
the dmic becomes two input devices: analog input and multichannel input,
and users can only record sound from analog input, the multichannel input
can't function at all. Besides this issue, there is another issue, after
users plug an external mic, the external mic can't replace the dmic
automatically, this gives users a bad experience since this behaviour is
different from the other audio designs.

[Bug 1885662] Re: please provide 4MB firmware builds

2020-07-29 Thread Dimitri John Ledkov
Embargo is lifted, the dbxupdate is now available from uefi.org. One can
drop it into /usr/share/secureboot/updates/dbx/ and trigger reinstall of
secureboot-db package to observe that dbx update fails to apply on 2MB
firmware, but should work on the 4MB firmware.

There are update securebootdb packages available from a PPA too, I will
make them available tomorrow.

into another software, I discover that the url wasn't copied into the clipboard
- the previous content ist filled in.
  That's confusing to me.

I would expect: If I can mark an url in Firefox with a single mouse-click,
which looks like a marking with a triple click, then it should be copied also
in the clipboard.
That would be a consisting behavior.

[Bug 1889486] [NEW] No autoloads for id-utils.el

2020-07-29 Thread Valery Ushakov
Public bug reported:

id-utils packages installs id-utils.el emacs file but doesn't install
autoloads for it in /etc/emacs/site-start.d

It need to provides something like:

# cat /etc/emacs/site-start.d/50id-utils.el
(autoload 'gid "id-utils" "run idutils' gid command" t)

It might additionally need to change the id-utils.el so that at the very
end it

(provide 'id-utils)

instead of

(provide 'idutils)

I'm not sure what's the deal is here with the id-utils vs idutils
renaming.

[Bug 1889297] Re: Bionic: debian-installer FTBFS because udev-udeb depends on libkmod2 not libkmod2-udeb

2020-07-29 Thread Mauricio Faria de Oliveira
The failing autopkgtest is in the 'upstream' tests
(search for 'TEST RUN: Job-related tests' twice.)

It's very probably unrelated: apparently the testsuite.service
ended unexpectedly, due to a SIGCHLD because the sleep.service
(the child iiuic) got a SIGTERM unexpectedly too, and finished.
According to the systemd journal in the artifacts.

Just trigerred a re-run since that has no relation with kmod.

[Bug 1863116] Re: debian/rules editconfigs does not work on s390x to change s390x only configs

2020-07-29 Thread Andy Whitcroft
Fundamentally you have to have a compiler to update the configuration on
an architecture. We can however limit update/edit operations to the
architectures for which appropriate compilers are available.

Attached is a patch implementing this exclusion. Could those affected
try applying this to their tree and retry the operation. Please report
any testing back here.

[Bug 1677398] Re: Apparmor prevents using storage pools and hostdev networks

2020-07-29 Thread Garry Lawrence
I finally had time to revisit this. It appears that not only did my
patch not connect to the remote libvirtd storage driver (as Christian
pointed out), but that the storage driver does not establish remote
connections at all. As such, I agree with Christian that my patch is a
dead-end and would also advise anyone finding this now to avoid applying
it, even temporarily.

Has there been any forward movement on the other proposed solution?

[Bug 1889479] [NEW] [groovy] "performance" cpufreq governor has a big impact on CPU consumption

2020-07-29 Thread Matthieu Baerts
Public bug reported:

Hello,

TL;DR the default cpufreq governor is now "performance" instead of
"powersave" since ondemand service is no longer shipped with systemd.

First, thank you for maintaining systemd in Ubuntu?

I am using Ubuntu Devel on my daily laptop. For a few weeks now, I
noticed the fans of my laptop were more regularly active and running at
a higher speed. I took some time to investigate the issue, suspecting
some apps using more resources or dust causing issues.

But it started to annoy me and I noticed CPU frequencies were often high:
>3.5GHz while not doing intensive use, e.g. having a terminal, note app, chat,
a browser with a few active tabs for email, calendar, etc. but no video, etc. I
didn't change what I am usually doing with my laptop and I am connected to a
remote server via SSH for dev tasks.
Also, the temperature of the CPU cores were often around 70°C or more according
to s-tui and sensors.

== Investigation ==

My CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8550U CPU @ 1.80GHz

When investigating the issue, I saw the CPU frequencies were often high,
I looked at the cpufreq governor and it was set to performance:

  $ cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu*/cpufreq/scaling_governor | sort -u
  performance

Setting it to "powersave" helped to reduce the CPU freq from ~3.5GHz to
~2.4GHz when using the laptop with the battery:

  # cpupower frequency-set --governor powersave
  (...)
  # cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu*/cpufreq/scaling_governor | sort -u
  powersave

Reducing also the temperature by the same occasion.

With TLP, the CPU freq are now around 800MHz when using the battery
while still being quite reactive and increasing when needed. I
understand it's certainly something many people would not like to have
by default. But it is interesting to try for those who want to reduce

Increasing the CPU consumptions has of course an impact on the energy
but also the comfort because of the noise of the fans can do when
running at high speed and the time you can use your device on battery.
But also and because of the higher temperature, the battery and other
components could have issues and the CPU clock is regularly throttled
while not doing much:

  (...)
[39948.392090] mce: CPU4: Package temperature above threshold, cpu clock
throttled (total events = 45107)
[39948.392091] mce: CPU0: Package temperature above threshold, cpu clock

  ## there are a lot more
  (...)

Regarding the throttle, it was better after having applied:
https://github.com/erpalma/throttled
But at the end, the temperature was increasing even more: around 80°C when
charging the battery and when doing a bit more activities (e.g. webrtc conf
call).

I tried to understand if it is normal to have "performance" by default.
The kernel config didn't change recently
(CONFIG_CPU_FREQ_DEFAULT_GOV_PERFORMANCE=y) but then I found this:
https://salsa.debian.org/systemd-
team/systemd/-/commit/65f46a7d14b335e5743350dbbc5b5ef1e72826f7

It looks like "ondemand" service is no longer shipped with systemd.
According to Dan, it is not needed and not used by other distributions.
But then I wonder if other distributions are maybe applying other kernel
config not to use the full power as quickly as it was in my case. For
example, do they also have CONFIG_CPU_FREQ_DEFAULT_GOV_PERFORMANCE=y?

On Fedora, for the kernel 5.7, I see ONDEMAND is used by default:
https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/jwboyer/fedora.git/tree/fedora/configs/kernel-5.7.11-x86_64.config?h=f32=b192daedbdefafedac87d825df77ea92d3f4c697#n589

In conclusion, is it a good idea to have "performance" as default cpufreq
governor on a desktop? (or others)

[Bug 1889477] [NEW] xdg-open on Kubuntu 20.04 reports 'Could not connect to localhost: Connection refused' if localhost service not already up

2020-07-29 Thread Number7
Public bug reported:

 1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System ->
About Ubuntu
Description:Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS
Release:20.04
(Kubuntu 20.04 Fresh Install)

 2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy pkgname' or
by checking in Software Center
xdg-utils:
  Installed: 1.1.3-2ubuntu1
  Candidate: 1.1.3-2ubuntu1

 3) What you expected to happen
xdg-open "http://localhost:1313; to open the default browser at
http://localhost:1313

 4) What happened instead
A gui dialog titled 'Error -- KIO Client' pops up with the message 'Could not
connect to host localhost: Connection refused.'

 5) More Info
I use xdg-open "http://localhost:someport; in my bash scripts before it
actually starts the service as a time saver. On older Ubuntu and other distros
it would open the default browser (Firefox) with a page not found. I press
reload once the service is setup and Firefox loads the page.

On Kubuntu 20.04 xdg-open gets blocked if the port is not already
opened.

Example command:

xdg-open "http://localhost:1313;

This did work on Kubuntu and Ubuntu 18.04 and Ubuntu 19.10. Currently
works on Manjaro KDE with latest stable update. Worked on Fedora 31 KDE
(can not remember if I tested 32).

Current Manjaro package reported as: xdg-utils 1.1.3+19+g9816ebb-1

Ubuntu 20.04 not tested.

[Bug 1876483] Re: prometheus thanos 504 error

2020-07-29 Thread Lucas Kanashiro
Thanks for reporting this bug and trying to make Ubuntu better.

Could you please elaborate on what is broken and in which version it was
fixed by upstream? At this point we can't introduce a new version with
new features and fixes (and also bugs!) to Ubuntu Bionic, if you can
point out the upstream fix we could try to backport it to Bionic.

[Bug 1889474] [NEW] Bionic update: upstream stable patchset 2020-07-29

2020-07-29 Thread Kamal Mostafa
Public bug reported:

SRU Justification

Impact:
The upstream process for stable tree updates is quite similar
in scope to the Ubuntu SRU process, e.g., each patch has to
demonstrably fix a bug, and each patch is vetted by upstream
by originating either directly from a mainline/stable Linux tree or
a minimally backported form of that patch. The following upstream
stable patches should be included in the Ubuntu kernel:

Have you tried installing one of the desktop meta packages and seeing if
that resolves some of the issues? From main.log:

[Bug 1863282] Re: libreoffice menu bar disappeared

2020-07-29 Thread Jarosław Rafa
In my case (see comment #4 above) it turned out that the lack of menu
was caused by unnecessary presence of indicator-applet-appmenu in my
GNOME panel. After removing the applet from panel, the menu was back.

[Bug 1888916] Re: upgrade from bionic to focal a server with molly-guard moves back sources.list to bionic entries

2020-07-29 Thread Brian Murray
The release upgrader should be modified so that a failure to reboot is
not considered as a fail to upgrade and subsequently the sources.list
files should not be restored.

** Description changed:

+to make the effort to think about what ''could'' happen in the

+
+ * This both shows the SRU team that the risks have been considered,
+and provides guidance to testers in regression-testing the SRU.

The seed now specifies the lxd snap in focal as
'lxd=4.0/stable/ubuntu-20.04' which doesn't match the expectations of
the code with looks for lxd as the only snap in the seed for minimized
images. This patch updates the pattern to accept 'lxd' or 'lxd=*'.

The failure we see in the build is:

W: No seed matching task cloud-image
  snap: considering required
  snap: considering minimal
  snap: considering standard
  snap: considering server
  snap: found lxd=4.0/stable/ubuntu-20.04

[Bug 1889468] [NEW] 20.04.1 selecting audio output device does not work on rpi

2020-07-29 Thread Paul Larson
Public bug reported:

Testing the 20.04.1 candidate images on rpi (currently rpi4-2GB) I'm noticing
that I can no longer select the audio output device with amixer. This used to
be possible by using:
amixer cset numid=3 2 for HDMI0
amixer cset numid=3 3 for HDMI1
amixer cset numid=3 1 for 3.5mm headphone jack

However, now trying to set this gets the following error:
amixer: Cannot find the given element from control default

It seems that by default, it will now use the hdmi output for whichever
one is connected, and will only output through the headphones if no hdmi
device is connected.

Kernel is:
Linux ubuntu 5.4.0-1015-raspi #15-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jul 10 05:34:24 UTC 2020
aarch64 aarch64 aarch64 GNU/Linux
