[Bug 1892245] Re: Extension breaks when accessing Overview or applications list (Focal)

2020-09-09 Thread fcole90
I was of your same opinion in the beginning, but then I realised that
while that one-liner should be the fix, it has not been designed nor
tested to be used on top of version 31 (the version currently available
in focal) but on top of version 38. If you check the debian/changelog
you can notice that in fact the fix is what bumped the package version
from 38-1 to 38-2.

Hence to me it seems a greater risk to cherry-pick that fix alone on
version 31, and then be on our own, rather than using version 38 with
the fix, which is where it was intended and released upstream.

As for the potential of regression, there is none in my opinion, as the
current version of the package breaks the interaction so badly that it
becomes completely unusable, so this change can only be an improvement
on that side.

[Bug 1895008] Re: software updater removes realtek r8125 driver and installs incorrect r8169 driver

2020-09-09 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1895008/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 1078165] Re: zram-config fails to start/install on a system with more then 30 processors

2020-09-09 Thread Oibaf
Before using multiple streams it would be nice to test the performance
(IIRC I did some test many years ago, and it scaled worse than having
multiple devices, but not really sure if my test was actually reliable
and eventually if that still applies with a recent kernel).

[Bug 1078165] Re: zram-config fails to start/install on a system with more then 30 processors

2020-09-09 Thread Chase
It's worth noting the multiple streams Oibaf mentioned are currently the
default. On my system, there are the max number of swap devices each
with 32 streams. I propose we only have one device and use the default
behavior of max_comp_streams = number of CPUs.

It's my first time creating an apt patch, hopefully I've done it
correctly.

[Bug 1895020] [NEW] [Groovy Patch] Network applet - List of Wireless Networks doesn't refresh properly when clicking the applet logo

2020-09-09 Thread Joshua Peisach
Public bug reported:

This is for GROOVY, as we are post-Debian import freeze and Debian has
not imported this patch yet.

Will attach patch soon.

At the moment of writing, for Focal we don't have any confirmation of this
occuring there. If it happens on Focal I'll patch.

[Impact]

 * As per upstream bug
https://github.com/linuxmint/cinnamon/issues/9531:

 * When opening the network applet, the list of wireless networks is not
refreshed properly. (It could show you nothing or not all the
connections accurately)

[Test Case]

 * Go on a wireless network
 * Create a new network (can be a hotspot)
 * Open the network applet and switch to the new network
 * Click the new network
 * Click the applet again-you are connected to the new network, but the new
network doesn't show in the list of networks.

 * The user here doesn't see the network he is connected too.

[Regression Potential]

 * Regression is very unlikely, however note:

 * I don't know how far back this bug goes to.
 * This may originate from 20.04.
 * Regressions can manifest from updates to internet connections (and/or new
possible network appearances) or how the network is accessed from the internet.
 * If it were to happen, check to see if it happens on airplane mode.
 * This patch ensures the menu item will actually be there.

[Other Info]

 * As said, we aren't sure if this occurs in Focal
 * Debian Bug #969245: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=969245

[Bug 1888726] Re: systemd-udevd regression: some renamed network interfaces stuck in "pending" state

2020-09-09 Thread Ryan Harper
@Dan

Just ran into this issue in curtin's vmtest for network_vlan on groovy.
I can confirm that if the netplan config includes the driver match on
the physical interfaces, then the vlans come up just fine.

I was thinking that netplan could inject the driver of the underlying
device into the match section. That would help in these situations,
however, I know of a few scenarios where this would need to be disabled
(On Azure, for example, their Advanced Networking which auto-bonds an
SRIOV interface and a HyperV nic together as eth0).

Also, this scenario does *NOT* fail for me on Focal, so I'm wondering
what changed between either netplan or systemd?

Focal:
netplan.io 0.99-0ubuntu3~20.04.2
systemd 245.4-4ubuntu3.2

Groovy
netplan.io 0.99-0ubuntu6
systemd 246-2ubuntu1

Re: [Bug 1892440] Re: Shell text is too small in mutter 3.36.4-0ubuntu0.20.04.2

2020-09-09 Thread Telework Inc.
That’s an extremely limited perspective, Stefan. My point is that ideally,
nobody would push a version of mutter with a massive bug that breaks
desktops around the world in the first place.

As I said, it is extremely embarrassing. Defending bad software design is
even more embarrassing. It’s not asking for “free lunch” to say that
packages in the universe repos should be free of critical bugs, I have no
idea what kind of uninspired simpleton would defend a major package staying
broken for several months.

This community sometimes, I swear.

2020-09-09 Thread schollsky
This tendency is childish.

If you want warranted security with fast(?) bug fixing, look out for a
proprietary OS solution or better contribute to Ubuntu by coding support.

Please stop behaving like a child:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/There_ain't_no_such_thing_as_a_free_lunch

If you want freedom of choice, you should better get along with the
implications.

New fix for rbd connector to work with ceph octopus

Found while testing cinder-backup with ceph on Ubuntu Focal, which
installs ceph Octopus. Octopus apparently enforces the requirement
that the config file contain a '[global]' section for general
requirements. The '[global]' section goes back at least to ceph
Hammer [0], so we will simply add it to the temporary ceph config
file that os-brick generates in the RBDConnector class.

$ ls -l /etc/resolv.conf
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 29 Jul 23 15:43 /etc/resolv.conf ->

[Bug 1895011] [NEW] virtual-packages do not pick a seeded package (ordering dependent)

2020-09-09 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
Public bug reported:

Hi,
I've started to look into what we considered a false positive in component
mismatches

o esmtp: esmtp-run
 [Reverse-Depends: logcheck (MAIN)]

The logcheck package has:
Depends: ... default-mta | mail-transport-agent ...

default-mta as well as mail-transport-agent are purely virtual

Postfix is in main and would provide both
Package: postfix
...
Provides: default-mta, mail-transport-agent

But postfix does not exist on i386.

Due to that when germinating all arches i386 will do this:
But from the log of germinate:
 26 ? Unknown dependency default-mta by logcheck
27 * Chose esmtp-run out of mail-transport-agent to satisfy logcheck
 28 ? Unknown dependency esmtp by esmtp-run
 29 * Chose mail-transport-agent to satisfy logcheck

But while the non-existance of postfix@i386 is the reason it can't find
default-mta
it is unclear why it picks esmtp-run for mail-transport-agent as there would be
lsb-invalid-mta that is in main even on i386.

This can be reproduced with the simpler seeds I created:
https://code.launchpad.net/~paelzer/ubuntu-seeds/+git/ubuntu/+ref/debug-esmtp-listing
https://code.launchpad.net/~paelzer/ubuntu-seeds/+git/platform/+ref/debug-esmtp-listing

Those only seed logcheck and we can see the issue.

I'd have expected that ordering isn't important, but I've found that
ensuring to have lsb-invalid-mta show up before logcheck will avoid the
issue.

Not sure how to proceed (see also the IRC discussion we had today) is
this a bug that could be improved in germinate or am I looking the wrong
way with this.

[Bug 1892245] Re: Extension breaks when accessing Overview or applications list (Focal)

2020-09-09 Thread Robie Basak
If there is a one-liner that fixes this in Focal, why are you proposing
a backport from Groovy instead? The trivial backport is what SRU policy
requires in the first instance as that is assumed to carry a much lower
regression risk. Backporting other changes needs separate justification
please, and is generally going to be harder to review and get landed.

Okay, I'll keep that in mind. At the moment I'm trying a different
overlay (driver) for the USB chip to see if that helps (not sure yet,
though it hasn't helped with the HDD).

[Bug 1895008] [NEW] automatic update replaces realtek 8125 driver with 8169

2020-09-09 Thread Andrew
Public bug reported:

Release: Ubuntu 18.04.5 LTS
Package: Software Updater

I have a "MSI MPG B550 Gaming Edge Wifi" motherboard which requires
Realtek Driver r8125.

When the weekly update runs, it automatically replaces the correct
driver with version r8169. This causes the Ethernet connection to not
work at all.

Fix: Manually remove r8169 driver and reinstall the Realtek r8125 driver
downloaded from Realtek website.

Additionally, I have tried to blacklist the r8169 driver in
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf as

# Blacklist bad ethernet driver
blacklist r8169

This caused the updater to remove the r8125 driver, but not replace it
with anything (as far as I can tell).

[Bug 1894666] Re: Gnome high CPU preventing login after screen lock

2020-09-09 Thread Fausto Marasco
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1849142 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1849142

Daniel - I tried the work around recommended for bug 1849142 however
that didn't fix the problem and the issue still persists.

I therefore believe that the issue is a separate one.
Are you able to provide any advice on the best place to collect gnome-shell
logs?
I'm keen to assist in tracking down what ever information I can on this bug.

Thanks.

[Bug 1895002] [NEW] zram-config attempts to allocate more devices than permitted

2020-09-09 Thread Chase
Public bug reported:

Using zram-config on a system with a sufficiently high count of CPUs
causes the systemd service to fail. The reason being that there is a cap
on the amount of swap devices that can be allocated. Zram is properly
allocated, but the systemd service fails since some devices cannot be
allocated. Below is the output of the service.

The fix should be simple enough (but I'm not proficient with git patches
yet). The script at /usr/bin/init-zram-swapping currently takes the
number of CPUs and creates this many devices to enable parallelization.
The simplest fix would be to set a max number of devices.

An alternative would be to use a smaller number of devices, but enable
multiple threads on each device. My understanding is that this is now
possible, but I'm not sure which method is more performant.

[Bug 1894942] The domainxml of the gurst I used to debug

2020-09-09 Thread bugproxy
--- Comment on attachment From pa...@de.ibm.com 2020-09-09 10:03 EDT---

This is a domainxml I used. It specifies a custom built qemu (installed under
/usr/local/bin), so among others that is likely a subject to be changed before
any re-use.

[Bug 1857472] Re: Bluetooth audio stutters horribly when using A2DP

2020-09-09 Thread John
This bluetooth stutter bug still exists in 20.04. On my system, it
stutters when the screensaver tries to kick in and music is playing from
the files on a hard drive. Currently using Clementine, but seems to
occur regardless of which music player is being used.

[Bug 1894218] Re: autopkgtest fails on armhf with Error: mdb_env_open: Cannot allocate memory

2020-09-09 Thread Graham Inggs
Seems fixed in ncbi-blast+. Sync'd.

ncbi-blast+ (2.10.0-3) unstable; urgency=medium

  * debian/patches/tune_32bit_lmdb_defaults: Tweak default map size expressions.
- For 64-bit platforms, use an explicit UL suffix on one factor to avoid
  overflow.
- For 32-bit platforms, avoid tying up quite so much address space, since
opening a pair of databases is a distinct possibility.
- Generally parenthesize expressions per best macro practice.

 -- Aaron M. Ucko Mon, 07 Sep 2020 21:15:02 -0400

ncbi-blast+ (2.10.0-2) unstable; urgency=high

  * debian/patches/support_gcc10: Additionally tweak ncbifile.cpp to avoid
narrowing errors on some platforms (i386, for one).
  * debian/patches/tune_32bit_lmdb_defaults (new): Conditionalize default
map size to avoid allocation failures on 32-bit platforms.
(Closes: #969608.)

2020-09-09 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
Great, thanks!
That makes sense as the guest driver is part of the equation here.

So if you are willing to also verify this then (with the guests that
trigger the issue on X->X->B) I think there is nothing against this
anymore.
Do you want me to re-eval in depth and sponsor?

Actually I used iperf in a loop to trigger this (from the guest)

for i in $(seq 1 100) ;
do
echo $i
iperf -c 192.168.122.1 || break
done

Hope that helps.

[Bug 1894997] [NEW] Similer

2020-09-09 Thread Steven Gilreath
Public bug reported:

I usually use two keyboard layout, plain `English (US)`, and `Englis
(US, intl. with dead keys)` in order to type `'` and press `e`, to make
this: `é`.

It worked in many distributions (including Ubuntu and Ubuntu
derivatives) for many years, now on a fresh installation of Ubuntu
18.04.5 LTS I have problems. The layout `US Intl. with dead keys` work
as the plain US layout: I can not type `é`.

Even the `Englis (US, intl. with AltGr dead keys)` does not work
properly. I obtain `é` by pressing `AltGr+e`, but if I press `AltGr+'`
followed by `e` I obtain `'e`. This means that the switching of keyboard
layouts is working properly.

Note that `Englis (UK, intl. with dead keys)` works properly, the
problem is specifically related to `Englis (US, intl. with dead keys)`

The bug seems not to be related to hardware since I tested with
different USB wired keyboards.

[Bug 1888575] Re: Split motd-news config into a new package

2020-09-09 Thread Andreas Hasenack
Hmm, the impact of having that file there in this situation is that if
you *then* install the motd-news-config package, it will see that file,
remove it, and install /etc/default/motd-news with ENABLED=0 instead of
ENABLED=1.

Can you easily remove /etc/default/motd-news.wasremoved manually in your
scripts for now for this situation?

@hamishbm -- I solved this by reverting to a prior fw release:

[Bug 36812] Re: Keyboard layout change on hotkeys press instead of release and do not work well with shortcuts

2020-09-09 Thread Yuriy Chernichenko
@nrbrtx, hi. Thank you so much for your patch. I'm using it for more than one
year, but few days ago I reinstalled my OS and it doesn't work now. I tried to
completely reinstall it but it didn't help.
I use xubuntu 18.04.5 LTS.
Can you help or give some advice?

[Bug 1887190] Re: MSFT Touchpad not working on Lenovo Legion-5 15ARH05

2020-09-09 Thread PD
Referring to another case #207759
(https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=207759)

I am curious why ideapad 15 has the same Touchpad ID and someone could
solve the issue by blacklist elan-i2c but Legion 15ARH05 cannot,
especially I didn't complied elan-i2c or elants-i2c. Legion 15ARH05
doesn't have touchscreen. Very strange

[Bug 1893905] Re: Disable CONFIG_BRCM_TRACING

2020-09-09 Thread Juerg Haefliger
** Description changed:

  [Impact]

CONFIG_BRCM_TRACING is currently enabled which results in regular
information being printed as errors. Using pr_err for things which are
not errors is a bad idea and might confuse users. It will also drop the
plymouth bootsplash screen back to the text console so that users can
  see the (bogus) error.

  [Test Case]

Boot a Pi and run 'dmesg'. The following info is printed as errors (in red):
  [ 15.478168] brcmfmac: brcmf_fw_alloc_request: using
brcm/brcmfmac43455-sdio for chip BCM4345/6
  [ 15.786996] brcmfmac: brcmf_fw_alloc_request: using
brcm/brcmfmac43455-sdio for chip BCM4345/6
  [ 15.821301] brcmfmac: brcmf_c_preinit_dcmds: Firmware: BCM4345/6
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ Some messages are now being printed with log level INFO rather than ERR.
