[Bug 33072] Re: Pulling AC plug suspends computer

2020-09-19 Thread Jan Smith
This happens consistently every time on my laptop running Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS.
I keep it running with the lid open and the AC power cable connected, when I
unplug the cable Ubuntu auto-suspends (battery is well over 90%). Extremely
annoying.

The power settings are:
* Automatic suspend when on battery power

[Bug 1793640] Re: Pulseaudio fails to detect sound card, while timidity is installed

2020-09-19 Thread h1bymask
Managed to make TiMidity++ work together with PulseAudio just fine on
Focal 20.04.1. The idea is just to start both pulseaudio and timidity
under the same user. One-liner for the current desktop user:

sudo sed -E "s,^(SERVER_NAME)=(.*)$,\1=$(id --user --name $USER) #\2,"
-E "s,^(SERVER_GROUP)=(.*)$,\1=$(id --group --name $USER) #\2," -i
/etc/default/timidity && sudo sed -E "s,^(\s*chown) timidity
(/var/run/timidity)$,\1 "$SERVER_USER" \2," -i /etc/init.d/timidity &&
sudo systemctl daemon-reload && sudo systemctl stop timidity && sudo
killall timidity; sudo systemctl start timidity && ps -o
pid=,state=,command= -C timidity; systemctl status timidity; sudo
systemctl restart pulseaudio; pacmd list-cards

One can replace $USER with any user name given PulseAudio starts under
the same user as well, the user is a member of the respective groups,
and it has sufficient permissions for both daemons.

[Bug 1883066] Re: After update cannot mount Android tablet

2020-09-19 Thread Robert Pearson
When my company first got Unix, they included a book of known errors. I
say book because it was over 200 pages, each page contained two actual
pages of known bugs. The thing is, they list the bugs but no one assumes
responsibility to actually FIX a bug. One thing Linux inherited from
Unix. DON'T FIX BUGS!

Archisman: Groovy is not released, so requesting an SRU for it does not
make sense. Technically, requesting an SRU for Focal doesn't make sense
at the moment since the problem is not fixed in development release
(Groovy). It is up to Ubuntu devs to do that. I've done as much as I can
here.

[Bug 1879183] Re: Cheese does not show preferences/options/menus to non-GNOME Users

2020-09-19 Thread Daniel Letzeisen
** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+ Cheese no longer displays its menu button on non-GNOME desktop environments.
+
+ Xubuntu uses cheese as its default camera program. Advanced users can
+ still change these settings through dconf-editor, but this is neither
+ convenient nor intuitive.
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ Use the cheese program in Xubuntu/xfce, Kubuntu/KDE or other non-GNOME
+ desktop environments. Notice missing menu in titlebar.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ The most likely regression would be if the patch disabled the menu in
+ GNOME. Testing has not shown this to be an issue.
+
+
+ [ORIGINAL REPORT]
Cheese has removed the GUI method of accessing preferences for non-GNOME
users.

https://github.com/GNOME/cheese/commit/48882da6a6dc4fc1c19e15f5210c9e10feb67ff5#diff-b2b45275b16940829b5f6f068943108d

I'm not sure if upstream cheese devs care enough to fix it:
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/cheese/-/issues/62
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/cheese/-/issues/52

Should Xubuntu default to a different camera program, such as guvcview?

(Partial?) WORKAROUND is to use dconf-editor:
  dconf-editor /org/gnome/cheese

I had similar problem with LinkHub HUB40 and Gentoo kernel 5.8.7-gentoo,
wpa_supplicant 2.9 and "Intel Corporation Dual Band Wireless-AC 3168NGW

Association with other routers was ok and it was working fine before
with LinkHub too. I have "solved" my problem by changing Intel card
(iwlwifi is horribly bugged anyway) to Ralink RT5372.

2020-09-19 Thread Kacper Michajłow
Just for reference to fix my remaining audio issues I did:

1. Compiled latest PulseAudio
(https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/pulseaudio/pulseaudio)
2. Copied latest ucm2 configs to /usr/share/local
(https://github.com/alsa-project/alsa-ucm-conf)
3. Enabled SOF driver
echo "options snd_intel_dspcfg dsp_driver=3" >
/etc/modprobe.d/sof-options.conf

Works like charm now. Good work, it must have took so quality time to
extract and minimize number of verbs needed.

2020-09-19 Thread Dan Kegel
On today's groovy snapshot (with the default kernel, 5.8.0-generic), the
original problem is still present; didn't seem to show up until 2nd run
of the bug script.

[Bug 1851518] Re: [950SBE/951SBE, Realtek ALC298, Speaker, Internal] No sound on internal speakers, very very quiet on headphones

2020-09-19 Thread Kacper Michajłow
@jhubuntu20

> The ION has the AKG smart amp and dolby what not

Same here actually, I believe Samsung used the same hardware.

> I think there may already be a fix out there for the metallic sound
issue

Yeah, my bad. I did quick test and start typing response, sorry. It is
PulseAudio that mess up my audio. When I bypass PA, sound is perfect. I
compared it to Windows. Windows is a lot louder like 35% is already
loud, on Linux it is ~75%. But it is perfectly fine. As for quality,
this would need proper testing, if everything is on par. Also those are
laptop speakers, so it doesn't matter much, one wouldn't listen to music
and expect quality output on those tiny speakers :)

> I am not sure what the samsung settings thingy is

I meant Samsung Setting application (Fn+F1), there are 4 audio profiles
to select and I believe they adjust amp/dac parameters when switching
them, but that's not that important.

[Bug 1896350] [NEW] nbd locks system?

2020-09-19 Thread Dan Kegel
Public bug reported:

I'm trying to use nbd on ubuntu 20.04 like so:

qemu-img create -f qcow2 foo.img 500M
sudo modprobe nbd
sudo qemu-nbd --disconnect /dev/nbd15 || true
sudo qemu-nbd --connect=/dev/nbd15 --cache=writeback --format=qcow2 foo.img
sudo mkfs.ext4 -L root -O "^64bit" -E nodiscard /dev/nbd15
sudo qemu-nbd --disconnect /dev/nbd15

It seems to work on some systems, but even on those systems, strange things
show up
in syslog, e.g.

Sep 19 15:46:02 thinky kernel: [27042.757768] block nbd15: Possible stuck

[Bug 1879183] Re: Cheese does not show preferences/options/menus to non-GNOME Users

2020-09-19 Thread Daniel Letzeisen
"I can't say whether/when GNOME devs will accept this patch upstream, as this
bug report (issues/52) was closed"
Yes, they did not seem to understand the issue in that report, which is now
closed. But https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/cheese/-/issues/62 is still open, so
there's at least some hope that they'll fix it.

"Daniel, the reason I asked you to make a separate PPA is that, your PPA says
"Random experiments. Use at own risk."
Yes, that's more of a "disclaimer" than anything. I only put the cheese package
in my PPA for testing (and thank you for testing in several environments). I
did not envision a lot of people using it. I probably should separate unrelated
packages in different PPA's. Maybe when I have some more caffeine.. :)

"I don't know how to submit patches to official packages in Ubuntu/Debian"
See: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates
I think this qualifies as: Bugs which do not fit under above categories, but
(1) have an obviously safe patch and (2) affect an application rather than
critical infrastructure packages (like X.org or the kernel).

[Bug 1851518] Re: [950SBE/951SBE, Realtek ALC298, Speaker, Internal] No sound on internal speakers, very very quiet on headphones

2020-09-19 Thread John Hoff
@kasper93

That is good to know. Makes sense that the CORB values might differ
somewhat. The ION has the AKG smart amp and dolby what not, so my CORB
sequence is likely tuned for that combination of items. It actually
sounds really good for a laptop. I think there may already be a fix out
there for the metallic sound issue. I never had it on my system, but
remember reading about it on other setups. If nothing else, we know the
procedure recommend by Mike works and you could just capture the CORB
values (with a decent amount of effort) on each different system. I am
not sure what the samsung settings thingy is, but that sounds like it
could be very helpful.

[Bug 1896341] [NEW] Spread out release-upgrade-motd over a period of time (changelogs.ubuntu.com)

2020-09-19 Thread Haw Loeung
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1836475 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1836475

Public bug reported:

Hi,

We see frequent request spikes to changelogs.ubuntu.com. It turns out
it's related to the release-upgrade-motd being called from cron.weekly.
Can we spread this out over a period of time? Perhaps changing it over
to using systemd timers much like we do with apt update these days?

[Bug 1871794] Re: [Bluetooth] No audio output/input in HSP/HFP mode

2020-09-19 Thread Luke Renaud
>From what I can gather this is not a function of the headset or
Bluetooth device, but it's a function of firmware differences in the
host side Bluetooth adapters.

For example, I have a Sony WH-1000MX3.

I have a USB dongle adapter that does not work in the HSP/HFP mode. When
selecting the mode the active profile throws various errors then returns
to the "off" PulseAudio/ALSA profile.

[Bug 1874161] Re: kpcli is unable to open a kdbx file if the file is locked by both a password and a key file

2020-09-19 Thread Lester Hightower
I am the author of kpci.

KeePassX does not support Keepass v2 files (*.kdbx), only v1 files
(*.kdb).

I suspect that you created a v1 file named foo.kdbx, which kpcli will
assume (wrongly) is a v2 file due to the kdbx file extension, and fail
to open it. An easy test would be to copy your file to one with just a
kdb extension and try to open it.

[Bug 1896337] [NEW] Removable Media settings don't remember your choices

2020-09-19 Thread Matteus Forelli
Public bug reported:

Hi,
The "Removable Media" section in Gnome Settings doesn't remember/respect the
applications you pick, and automatically falls back to the first option in the
list. This is repeatable on my desktop and laptop with 20.04.1 fully updated.
For instance if I pick Rhythmbox for CD Audio and close & re-open the settings,
it has changed to VLC, the first option available.
I've searched Google with no success for this issue, so I'm reporting it here.

[Bug 1792300] Re: Speech Synthesis Not Working

2020-09-19 Thread guest271314
Speech synthesis processing is not shipped in Chromium source code.

Ordinarily, in order to use speech synthesis at Chromium a speech
synthesis engine needs to be installed, for example, espeak or espeak-
ng, and speech-dispatch needs to be installed

  $ sudo apt install python3-speechd

then launch Chromium with

  --enable-speech-dispatcher

flag.

However, no voices are loaded at snap version of Chromium at

Chromium85.0.4183.102 (Official Build) snap (64-bit)
Revision
ffe848af6a5df4fa127e2929331116b7f9f1cb30-refs/branch-heads/4183@{#1770}
OS Linux

Chromium from https://download-chromium.appspot.com/

Chromium87.0.4268.0 (Developer Build) custom (64-bit)
Revision
b2793c4720e3daf929778440ff945eadf202b200-refs/heads/master@{#808630}
OS Linux
JavaScript V8 8.7.142

also has serious issues with Web Speech API implementation.

It should be possible to run

  $ spd-conf

then edit the speech synthesis engine configuration file to modify
variations, which should be reflected in speechSynthesis.getVoices(),
however, that also does not currently work for non-snap Chromium, where
snap Chromium loads no voices at all.

Also, the queue to speech-dispatcher is severely broken at non-snap
Chromium, requiring executing speechSynthesis.cancel() to cycle through
the code that worked within the last few releases at
https://guest271314.github.io/SSMLParser/, where the code outputs the
expected result at Firefox 80 and Nightly 82.

[Bug 1896336] [NEW] Ubuntu upgrade 18.04 to 20.04 crashes

2020-09-19 Thread Pulkit Sharma
Public bug reported:

Could not calculate the upgrade

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.

 This was likely caused by:
 * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
Please use the tool 'ppa-purge' from the ppa-purge
package to remove software from a Launchpad PPA and
try the upgrade again.

If none of this applies, then please report this bug using the command
'ubuntu-bug ubuntu-release-upgrader-core' in a terminal. If you want to
investigate this yourself the log files in '/var/log/dist-upgrade' will
contain details about the upgrade. Specifically, look at 'main.log' and
'apt.log'.

2020-09-19 Thread Thomas Walker
Fwiw- upgrade to development 20.10 (w/ 5.8.0-18-generic) shows me one,
very nearby (in the same room) 2.4ghz SSID but not the 5ghz SSID
advertised from the same device.

Attempts to connect to the 2.4ghz SSID result in:

Sep 19 12:13:45 kernel: iwlwifi :00:14.3: No beacon heard
and the session protection is over already...

A very similar system (X1 gen7) w/ 02f0:0030 (instead of this system's

[Bug 1892440] Re: Shell text with wrong size in mutter 3.36.4-0ubuntu0.20.04.2 (mostly on Nvidia)

2020-09-19 Thread Treviño
FYI, I've uploaded the fixed package to focal queue
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/focal/+queue?queue_state=1_text= it
will take some time for the SRU team to review this.

Once it's ready, you will be notified in bug to test it to confirm it
works (please do it, together with bug #1896332 to make the SRU process
[1] faster).

Meanwhile, you can try test packages from this PPA:

It also contains new gnome-shell (and yaru adaptations for that).

[Bug 1896333] [NEW] "Select an audio" menu when user have not even inserted headphone jack.

2020-09-19 Thread Compiler
Public bug reported:

GNOME 3.36.3 | Ubuntu 20.04.1

It has been a month and I have been experiencing this weird behavior.

Earphone option like this 3 while unlocking the laptop as if I have
inserted earphones.

Some details this issue:
I have to wait like 10 min or so after the lock of the screen. This will
trigger something and when I open the lid or touch mouse pad to unlock, I get
earphone options to chooose in the screen as if I have inserted headphone jack.

Something is wrong. I want to know why. This didn't used to happen a
month ago. I waited a month to report this issue thinking it will get
resolved in upcoming updates but sadly no changes so far. I think some
Ubuntu's GNOME update might have something to do this. This is my wild
guess. But very certain about it. Let me know.

Although the issue might seems really small issue but very annoying to
go throw this EVERYDAY.

I would love to know what is causing this? When its fixed? Is there
something wrong on my side?

Note: This happens ONLY when I try to unlock the screen after like >10
min or so.

I tested your script on my 930SBE. It sort of worked, I indeed got
output on speakers, but the quality was terrible, sound was metallic and
tiny. Generally looks like we are setting AMP coefficients and those
vary between models. I will set up and dump verbs for my machine when I
get some free time.

With a previous version (3.36.4-0ubuntu0.20.04.1) all works fine. The problem
is after update to the (3.36.4-0ubuntu0.20.04.2).
