[Bug 1897224] [NEW] chromium wayland won't start: Unable to open X display

2020-09-24 Thread Martin Vysny
Public bug reported:

I'm trying to run chromium installed via snap in Ubuntu 20.10 when
running Ubuntu Wayland session. Unfortunately, chromium wouldn't start:

> chromium

open X display.

I am able to run Firefox just fine (assuming that Firefox still runs on
xwayland) and also Intellij snap works fine.

[Bug 1894879] Re: frequent crashes when using do-resolve()

2020-09-24 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
Hi David,
your comment seems out of context here. If there is an issue I'd recommend
filing a new bug for netplan and discussing things there, but if all you need
is "Is it possible to run with the old net manager and focal" then look at [1].

[Bug 1897223] [NEW] Version and other metadata not proper

2020-09-24 Thread Jakob Borg
Public bug reported:

This is the current 1.1.4~ds.1 package:

$ ./syncthing --version
syncthing unknown-dev "Erbium Earthworm" (go1.12.9 linux-amd64) unknown@unknown
1970-01-01 00:00:00 UTC

This is clearly broken. The build process should use build.go to get
these variables correctly by default, or needs to take proper care to
set them when building. For details, please see
https://docs.syncthing.net/dev/building.html.

[Bug 1871306] Re: No sound from internal card chtmax98090 Bay Trail QWAWKS

2020-09-24 Thread Gabriele Tettamanzi
The package involved is alsa-ucm-conf, version 1.2.2
It does not contain the UCM2 configuration files for the sound card
chtmax98090, which have been added upstream.
Because groovy has alsa-ucm-conf 1.2.2, the bug is applicable for 20.10 too.
In Debian unstable and testing is available alsa-ucm-conf 1.2.3, which contains
the missing UCM2 files.

[Bug 1890435] Re: gcc-10 breaks on armhf (flaky): internal compiler error: Segmentation fault

2020-09-24 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
I tried to isolate what was running concurrently and found 7 gcc calls.
I have set them up to run concurrently in endless loops each.
That way they reached a lot of iterations without triggering the issue :-/

I don't know how to continue :-/
But I can share a login to this system and show how to trigger the bug.

The following will get you there and trigger the bug usually in 1-2 loops (~4h
on average)
$ ssh ubuntu@10.48.130.69
$ lxc exec groovy-gccfail bash
# cd qemu-5.0/
# i=1; export DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS=parallel=4; while debuild -i -us -uc -b -d; do
echo "try $((i++)) complete" >> ~/build.log; done

@Doko could you take over from here as I'd hope you know how to force gcc to
give you a dump?
I imported your key to the system mentioned above.

Worse still, workarounds that used to mitigate the problem (dconf

[Bug 1887490] Re: Add/Backport EPYC-v3 and EPYC-Rome CPU model

2020-09-24 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
** Description changed:

+ ## Qemu SRU ##
+
+ [Impact]
+
+ * CPU definitions are added to qemu as these CPUs are known.
+And due to that over time are missing in former releases.
+
+ * To really benefit from the new features of these chips
+they have to be known, therefore new type additions done by
+upstream should be backported if they generally apply and do
+not depend on SRU-critical changes.
+
+ * This backports two upstream fixes that just add definitions (no
+control flow changes)
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ * Probe qemu for the known CPU types (works on all HW)
+$ qemu-system-x86_64 -cpu ? | grep EPYC
+Focal without fix:
+x86 EPYC (alias configured by machine type)
+x86 EPYC-IBPB (alias of EPYC-v2)
+x86 EPYC-v1 AMD EPYC Processor
+x86 EPYC-v2 AMD EPYC Processor (with IBPB)
+Focal with fix also adds:
+x86 EPYC-Rome (alias configured by machine type)

+x86 EPYC-Rome-v1 AMD EPYC-Rome Processor

+x86 EPYC-v3 AMD EPYC Processor
+
+ * Given such HW is available start a KVM guest using those new types
+Since we don't have libvirt support (yet) do so directly in qemu
+commandline like (bootloader is enough)
+$ qemu-system-x86_64 -cpu EPYC-Rome -machine pc-q35-focal,accel=kvm
-nographic
+$ qemu-system-x86_64 -cpu EPYC-v3 -machine pc-q35-focal,accel=kvm
-nographic
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ * This adds new CPU types to the list of known CPUs defining their name
+and features. Generally the changes are contained to those new types
+and only active when selected - and usually only selectable on such new
+machines. Therefore not a lot should change for other users.
+One thing thou, if a user selected an unversioned type (which in this
+case only can be "EPYC") by default it will pick the latest subversion
+that applies. In this case the behavior will change and pick EPYC-v3
+after the fix. But this is the whole purpose of versioned (stay as is)
+and unversioned (move with updates) CPU types - so that should be ok.
+The EPYC-Rome type didn't exist in Focal before, so it can't "change"
+for users.
+
+
+ [Other Info]
+
+ * Depends on the new kernel 5.4.0-49 or later (Currently in
+focal-proposed)
+
+ ---
+
Qemu in focal has already support for most (except amd-stibp) flags of
  this model.

[Bug 1878279] Re: MSFT0004:00 06CB:CD98 Touchpad/trackpad mouse randomly not recognized from any given boot

2020-09-24 Thread Knobik
Lenovo Ideapad 5 14are05.
CPU: Ryzen 7 4700u.
BIOS: 1.06 (latest, on date of posting)
System: Ubuntu 20.04 (kernel 5.4.0-48-generic)
Touchpad reported by dmesg: MSFT0004:00 06CB:CD98

Im attacking a tarball with full dmesg and acpi dumps for both working
and broken states.

In the broken state, some funky stuff is happening with the i2c_hid, but
in the end it somehow it still recognized the touchpad as a mouse (but
it did not work in the system). Everything is in the logs.

[Bug 1849644] Re: QEMU VNC websocket proxy requires non-standard 'binary' subprotocol

2020-09-24 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
** Description changed:

- When running a machine using "-vnc" and the "websocket" option QEMU
- seems to require the subprotocol called 'binary'. This subprotocol does
- not exist in the WebSocket specification. In fact it has never existed
- in the spec, in one of the very early drafts of WebSockets it was
- briefly mentioned but it never made it to a final version.
+ [Impact]
+
+ * The exact details of the protocol/subprotocal was slightly unclear
+between the projects. So qemu ended up insisting on "binary" being
+used but newer noVNC clients no more used it.
+
+ * Qemu got fixed in 5.0 to be more tolerant and accept an empty sub-
+protocol as well. This SRU backports that fix to Focal.
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ * Without the fix the following will "Failed to connect", but with the
+ fix it will work.
+
+ $ sudo apt install qemu-system-x86
+ # will only boot into a failing bootloader, but that is enough
+ $ qemu-system-x86_64 -vnc :0,websocket
+ # We need version 1.2 or later, so use the snap
+ $ snap install novnc
+ $ novnc --vnc localhost:5700
+ Connect browser to http://:6080/vnc.html
+ Click "Connect"
+
+ * Cross check with an older noVNC (e.g. the one in Focal) if the
+connectivity still works on those as well
+
+- Reminders when switching between the noVNC implementations
+ - always refresh the browser with all clear ctrl+alt+f5
+ - start/stop the snapped one via snap.novnc.novncsvc.service
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ * This is exclusive to the functionality of noVNC, so regressions would
+have to be expected in there. The tests try to exercise the basics, but
+e.g. Openstack would be a major product using
+
+ [Other Info]
+
+ * The noVNC in Focal itself does not yet have the offending change, but
+we want the qemu in focal to be connecteable from ~any type of client
+
+

+ When running a machine using "-vnc" and the "websocket" option QEMU seems to
require the subprotocol called 'binary'. This subprotocol does not exist in the
WebSocket specification. In fact it has never existed in the spec, in one of
the very early drafts of WebSockets it was briefly mentioned but it never made
it to a final version.

When the WebSocket server requires a non-standard subprotocol any
WebSocket client that works correctly won't be able to connect.

One example of such a client is noVNC, it tells the server that it
doesn't want to use any subprotocol. QEMU's WebSocket proxy doesn't let
noVNC connect. If noVNC is modified to ask for 'binary' it will work,
  this is, however, incorrect behavior.

Looking at the code in "io/channel-websock.c" it seems it's quite hard-
  coded to binary:

Look at line 58 and 433 here:
  https://git.qemu.org/?p=qemu.git;a=blob;f=io/channel-websock.c

This code has to be made more dynamic, and shouldn't require binary.

[Bug 1852747] Re: mdcheck_start.service trying to start unexisting file

2020-09-24 Thread legioner
I enabled -proposed and installed the package:

# dpkg -l mdadm | grep mdadm
ii mdadm 4.1-5ubuntu1.1 amd64tool to administer Linux MD
arrays (software RAID)

# dpkg -L mdadm | grep -i mdcheck
/lib/systemd/system/mdcheck_continue.service
/lib/systemd/system/mdcheck_continue.timer
/lib/systemd/system/mdcheck_start.service
/lib/systemd/system/mdcheck_start.timer
/usr/share/mdadm/mdcheck

# ls -altr /usr/share/mdadm/mdcheck
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 3884 Sep 24 18:54 /usr/share/mdadm/mdcheck

Original bug is fixed now.

But I see another problem with systemd files - mdcheck_continue.timer is
misconfigured and will never be started:

# systemctl status mdcheck_continue.timer
● mdcheck_continue.timer - MD array scrubbing - continuation
 Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/mdcheck_continue.timer; static; vendor
preset: enabled)
 Active: inactive (dead)
Trigger: n/a
   Triggers: ● mdcheck_continue.service

# systemctl enable mdcheck_continue.timer
The unit files have no installation config (WantedBy=, RequiredBy=, Also=,
Alias= settings in the [Install] section, and DefaultInstance= for template
units). This means they are not meant to be enabled using systemctl.

Possible reasons for having this kind of units are:
• A unit may be statically enabled by being symlinked from another unit's
  .wants/ or .requires/ directory.
• A unit's purpose may be to act as a helper for some other unit which has
  a requirement dependency on it.
• A unit may be started when needed via activation (socket, path, timer,
D-Bus, udev, scripted systemctl call, ...).
• In case of template units, the unit is meant to be enabled with some
  instance name specified.

I suppose, that I need to create another bug.

[Bug 1896848] Re: Upgrade from 18.04 to 20.04: "An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade." apt.log shows hundreds of broken things.

2020-09-24 Thread Daniel Letzeisen
I don't claim to be an expert, but if possible, remove gnuradio (and
gnuradio-dev) and reinstall it after upgrade. That's what looks to be
causing the cascade of errors in your apt log.

Let me/us know if that works.

[Bug 1897211] [NEW] Ubuntu not loading/detecting discrete GPU after update

2020-09-24 Thread Matteus Forelli
Public bug reported:

After the most recent update Ubuntu 20.04.1 no longer detects or lists the
Radeon 560X dedicated GPU in my laptop (the About sections lists the Vega 8
iGPU twice...). Even after a complete clean reinstall the issue persists. Even
clicking "Launch using Dedicated Graphics Card" is broken, and it crashes X,
which reloads itself.
I'm not the most knowledgeable on the graphics stack, so not sure what I need
to provide!

2020-09-24 Thread Shashank Nimje
Okay, this happened to me on Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS. Then it happened to me
on 20.04 LTS. This happened several times. What worked for me is
unplugging my Ethernet cable and disconnecting my WiFi, and unchecking
the "update the OS while installing" something option. Making sure that
my computer was not on the internet before starting the installation
process did the trick. Hope this helps someone.

The ISO was written twice to two different thumb-drives. Same issue each
  time on same boxes.

On a number of boxes it’s wanting me to download aka
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-cdimage/+bug/1883040 however it’s done
that on boxes not impacted by that bug, which makes me think thumb-
drive/squashfs errs related. Also results of boot appeared different on
varying boxes (inconsistent; dc7700 reported no thumb-drive; d755-5 also
did that sometimes, sometimes it got to wanting to download - those two
boxes were impacted by prior report; the remaining boxes were more
consistent in response..; but if trouble reading data on thumb-drive
then the slower boxes (dc7700/d755-5) may have more issues & thus be
  less consistent?)

I'll file this as a bug report so I can close my failed QA-tests, but
I'm considering changing the status to 'incomplete', and re-testing
tomorrow, OR it needs me to re-write ISO from a different box to a
third-thumb-drive as I don't think I've ruled out media issues given
  Leok's report.

[Bug 1896638] Re: Path to swapfile doesn't use a static device path

2020-09-24 Thread Francis Ginther
I've updated the find_device_for_file() function in /usr/bin/hibinit-
agent to:

def find_device_for_file(filename):
# Find the mount point for the swap file ('df -P /swap')
df_out = check_output(['df', '-P', filename]).decode('ascii')
dev_str = df_out.split("\n")[1].split()[0]
lsblk_out = check_output(['lsblk', '-dno', 'PARTUUID',
dev_str]).decode('ascii')
uuid_str = lsblk_out.strip()
return "PARTUUID=%s" % (uuid_str)

I've tested this on xenial and bionic. With xenial, I would see 2-3% failures
on certain instance types due to this issue. Now I see none.

[Bug 1897198] [NEW] Ubuntu Cinnamon 20.10 Linux headers not installed nor updated

2020-09-24 Thread BertN45
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu Cinnamon 20.10 does not install nor update the Linux headers,
that are required for the Virtualbox Guest Additions. The upgrade from
Linux 5.8.0-18 to 5.8.0-19 went wrong after reboot, because the screen
was using the default 800 x 600. It was not possible to update to my
standard 1920 x 1080, because it was missing from the list of supported
resolutions, so I compromised on 1680 x 1050.

I used Synaptic again to reinstall the Linux headers and after that the
installation of Virtualbox Guest Additions went as as expected and
everything was OK. Ubuntu itself does NOT have this problem, it is
specific for Cinnamon.

ProblemType: Bug
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 20.10

[Bug 1897185] Re: login triggers suspend after update

2020-09-24 Thread Tim Wetzel
Additional observations:
1. This bug is interacting with another: where the "short name" of the user
(the Home file name) rather than the full user name is showing up on the login
screen. Usually the short name shows up on this machine when it is docked. When
the laptop is being used by itself, the full name shows up. ONLY ONCE tonight
has the full name shown up at login in the dock... and when it did, the machine
did not suspend.
2. This bug is also affecting automatic WiFi connection. When the machine
suspends and I press power again to resume it (on the dock), it connects to
WiFi as it should. But on that one occasion where the full user name showed up
and it did not suspend, it cannot find the WiFi network security credentials
even though they are stored. Very strange.
3. In working with this tonight, the spinning ubuntu logo hang came back during
login. Since I know that initramfs was updated shortly before the kernel and
nvidia updates, I created a new initramfs image. I also had to update that new
image explicitly with a second execution of the update-initramfs command. I
turned the splash screen back off, and verified that refreshing the ramdrive
has once again cleared the initramfs deconding errors.
4. So the changes to initramfs, to the core/kernel, and to the nvidia drivers
don't seem to be getting along with each other too well.
I hope this helps.

### Analysis

Apport which is crash reporter in Ubuntu will execute gdbus to check if pid is
in a closing user session. Before executing the binary, it drop privilege to
crashed process's uid. But it doesn't drop group id, so it can be used to leak
file which is owned by root group.

It leads to anyone can read the file which can only be read by root group, but
the file size must be 16bytes.

[Bug 1897153] Re: Automount fails due to SSSD config (Groovy Gorilla)

2020-09-24 Thread Gavin Graham
I installed 20.04 fresh in a Gnome Boxes VM and installed autofs (sudo apt-get
install autofs).
SSSD was not installed as a dependancy.

Then, I installed SSSD (sudo apt-get install sssd) just to see what
/etc/sssd looked like and it's actually the same. there's no config file
under /etc/sssd and and empty /etc/sssd/conf.d directory

I executed a systemctl start sssd and it threw the same errors.
I didn't have autofs configured and did not try to start autofs.

use GTK default paper size and orientation

In the nsPrintSettingsGTK constructor, gtk_paper_size_new(nullptr) gets the
system default paper size from the locale and gtk_page_setup_new() sets
default orientation to portrait.

These are subsequently overridden by prefs if any have been saved from
a previous nsPrintSettingsGTK.

Yes. The code removed here was not reading user's prefs. Those prefs
were never saved.

This happens in nsPrintOptions from InitPrintSettingsFromPrefs(), called after
InitPrintSettingsFromPrinter().

2020-09-24 Thread Karlt
This bug is not half as bad now that the fix for bug 446041 provides that
print.print_paper_* prefs (once they exist) will override
print.postscript.paper_size.

The print.print_paper_* prefs will record the previous setting, but this will
only be different from print.postscript.paper_size if the value is been
changed in the page setup.

There is also much code here that can be removed and so make the use of
different prefs somewhat less confusing.

3) If there was a search box in the top center of the Activities panel, it
would make it easy for a user to quickly search for an app or information on

[Bug 1897189] [NEW] External Monitor No Longer detected

2020-09-24 Thread shanec
Public bug reported:

I noticed that a new kernel was available and booted into it today,
after booting previous issues (display font size on login, and laptop
touchpad/trackpoint not working) were resolved.

However, my external monitor no longer displays in the settings, and
can't appear to be used.

I suspect the kernel update coincides with an nvidia driver update, but
haven't looked into that yet.
