[Bug 1857383] Re: Fractional scaling applies to both monitors when you only want it on one

2020-11-06 Thread UV
i can observe no fractional scaling on a default installation dell xps5790 even
with a single monitor (4k).
Connecting a second monitor the scaling is not working separately either.
The most obvious effect is that the right side (top bar) goes off screen.
I tried scaling with different display resolution to no avail.

I eventually started just using a lower display resolution and gave up
on fractional scaling.

[Bug 1902654] Re: failure to migrate virtual machines with pc-i440fx-wily type to ubuntu 20.04

2020-11-06 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
Good - now the compat attributes in Focal for a wily type machine fully
match what was present in Bionic.

@Trya - could I ask you to try qemu - 1:4.2-3ubuntu6.9~ppa3 from PPA
[1] on Focal and do a migration of the kind of windows-guest that
formerly failed onto a Focal target that has that installed?

[Bug 1903277] Re: language layout switch does not work

2020-11-06 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1903277/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 1902764] Re: package grub-pc 2.04-1ubuntu26.6 failed to install/upgrade: el subproceso instalado paquete grub-pc script post-installation devolvió el código de salida de error 10

2020-11-06 Thread Marc Deslauriers
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

[Bug 1858463] Re: Desktop freezing while SSD under heavy load

2020-11-06 Thread Guillaume Michaud
Tested right now with kernel 5.10.0-051000rc2-generic #202011012330 SMP Sun Nov
1 23:33:16 UTC 2020 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
The problem happens all the same.
Test case :
- Launch 1 or 2 heavy downloads, e.g. large torrents with Transmission
- Every few seconds (10 ? 15 ? 20 ?), apps (e.g. Chrome) becomes unresponsive
(e.g. clicks and keystrokes are not taken into account, switching tabs is
impossible)
- Afterwards, apps respond for a while... and get stuck again... and so on
(Happened half a dozen times while writing this message.)

You're right Marc, the snap currently in the edge channel is missing
pieces (specifically building and bundling recent versions of the
drivers), I'm still working on merging my changes from the experimental
VA-API support branch.

Programs that still rely on kdesu for example - kubuntu-driver-manager
fail to work if "pwfeedback" is enabled in /etc/sudoers

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu

to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

[Bug 1901903] Re: Touchpad

2020-11-06 Thread Marc Deslauriers
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

[Bug 1901132] [NEW] fprintd fingerprint login compromises password security.

2020-11-06 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

You have been subscribed to a public security bug by Marc Deslauriers
(mdeslaur):

I have a Ubuntu 20.04 installed on a laptop with a fingerprint reader.
I was curious about it today, and was happy to see that fingerprintd was
already installed. I'm fairly certain I didn't install this myself, so
I suspect it's installed by default if you have a laptop with a
fingerprint reader.

I soon discovered that I could easily add (enroll seems to be what
fprintd calls it) a fingerprint login to my account. Swiping my finger
on the fingerprint scanner 5 times added a new fingerprint login.
Logging out, I could easily login via swiping my fingerprint. Easy-
peasy, and "just works".

After a minute of thinking of this though, I was EXTREMELY surprised to
learn that I wasn't required to enter my password to add a fingerprint.
The system just added an entirely new way for me to authenticate,
without first verifying my identity.

This means anyone with access to the computer for a few minutes could
easily add their own fingerprints to the laptop, and login with no
password.

It seems apparent to me that any time an access method is added (like
changing a password), the interface should confirm that the user is who
they say they are. This is why you have to type in your old password
before changing to a new one. The fact that Ubuntu doesn't do this is a
major security concern.

Of course, I've since un-installed fprintd, as it was just a curiosity,
not something I wanted to trust.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Since the package referred to in this bug is in universe or
multiverse, it is community maintained. If you are able, I suggest
coordinating with upstream and posting a debdiff for this issue. When a
debdiff is available, members of the security team will review it and
publish the package. See the following link for more information:

The previous comment isn't right, my mistake.

This commit is needed to fix it, included in 9.16.2:

commit 4cc7d2412f63d8878cd8c806752cc2d7b5a580ab
Author: Petr Menšík
Date: Wed Apr 1 14:28:42 2020 +0200

Link all required libraries to libisc

It would fail to link -lisc without additional libraries, which should
not be required.

[Bug 1903293] [NEW] Avoid double newline when running insertchanges

2020-11-06 Thread Thadeu Lima de Souza Cascardo
Public bug reported:

[Impact]
When preparing derivative kernels and inserting master kernel changes, if the
derivative has not changes on its own, we end up with two empty lines, which is
caught up by verify-release-ready.

[Test case]
Run cranky-close with derivative changes and no derivative changes.

[Regression Potential]
We could break changelogs, or the kernel preparation altogether.

I'm running 20.04 LTS on an HP Envy x360 Ryzen 7 3700U with Radeon Vega
Mobile. The gdm3 package is at version 3.36.3-0ubuntu0.20.04.2.

When I trigger a suspend with `echo mem > /sys/power/state` the system
appears to go into mem suspend correctly. Hitting a key should bring
the display back with the lock screen displayed, but instead briefly
brings a slightly scrambled screen to life and then the screen goes
black and stays that way.

The system is still up as I can SSH into it. Killing the gdm-wayland-
session process then brings me back to the GDM login screen and I can
start a new session.

[Bug 1835660] Re: initramfs unpacking failed

2020-11-06 Thread archi02
Same issue here and no workaround works : neither switching from lz4 to
gzip nor keeping lz4 and only update initramfs. I also tried to launch
with another kernel, without success.

The computer is now blocked (Xubuntu 20.04, fresh install). I really
don't want to reinstall 18.04.

What can I do ? Any idea will be welcome ! :)

2020-11-06 Thread Florian Beier
@Hui Wang

I installed your package and rebooted. It seems to fix the issue, audio
is working as expected again.

One thing I noticed is that when I mute the speakers or microphone via
their media keys (F1 and F4) the LEDs on the keys don't light up. It may
not be related to this issue though because when I activate the FnLock
the LED on the Esc key also doesn't light up.

[Bug 1903288] [NEW] Power guest secure boot with static keys: kernel portion

2020-11-06 Thread bugproxy
Public bug reported:

== Comment: #2 - Daniel John Axtens  - 2020-11-05
20:15:10 ==
This is the kernel side of changes needed for LPAR/guest secure boot.

Because Ubuntu keeps its kernels so wonderfully up to date, I don't
think there are any extra patches you need to pick up. (I'll double-
check against the 21.04 tree once my git pulls finish!)

However, we potentially need some configuration changes to make sure
kexec-ing into a crashdump kernel still works.

Because Lockdown requires that kexec kernels are signed by a key trusted
by IMA, the public key for used for signing the kdump kernel needs to be
in the IMA keyring or the platform keyring. For host secure boot (and in
the UEFI case), it's loaded into the platform keyring. But in the case
of guest secure boot with static keys, it's not loaded into the platform
keyring so it needs to be loaded into the IMA keyring.

This is easy enough to do. Firstly, load the Secure Boot CA into the
.primary_trusted_keys keyring via the CONFIG_SYSTEM_TRUSTED_KEYS
property. We assume the key used to sign the kernel is signed by this
CA.

Then, enable IMA_LOAD_X509, which allows certificates signed by a key on the
.primary_trusted_keys keyring to be loaded into the IMA keyring. Then set
IMA_X509_PATH to provide a path to the signing key on installed file system.
(It may also be possible to do this step in userspace, so long as the CA is
trusted by the kernel.)

Then that key will be loaded into the .ima keyring at boot and be used to
appraise the kexec kernel for crashdumps.

[Bug 1903289] [NEW] Power guest secure boot with static keys: GRUB2 portion

2020-11-06 Thread bugproxy
Public bug reported:

== Comment: #2 - Daniel John Axtens  - 2020-11-05
19:50:03 ==
This bug covers the grub part of our LPAR Secure Boot design, which I'd like to
propose for your 21.04 release.

Background
==

Please find attached an overall outline of the design.

Patches
===

I've posted the 3 main parts of this feature to the grub mailing list:

 - Allowing grub to be signed with an appended signature to be verified by
firmware: https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/grub-devel/2020-08/msg00037.html
 - Teaching grub how to verify appended signatures on Linux kernels:
https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/grub-devel/2020-10/msg00152.html
 - Linking grub's verification to the secure boot status from firmware:
https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/grub-devel/2020-10/msg00048.html

(We do need one other piece just to increase the amount of memory grub
allocates for itself in as it starts. We have a couple of prototypes,
one which we've posted to the list and one which we haven't. The one
we've posted breaks booting of guests with 512MB of memory, which - as
far as I can tell - is still supported by Ubuntu, and indeed is the
default for guests created by uvtool. So we'll post an alternative to
the list shortly.)

Because of the grub development cycle, these patches will not be merged
upstream for 2.06. We are hoping, given the incredibly slow pace of grub
development and the number of out-of-tree patches that have
traditionally been required for UEFI secure-boot support, that you'd be
willing to carry these out of tree while we try to have them merged.

Next Steps
==

We need the following information from you:

 - If you're willing to take grub changes, what tree would you like us
to backport our grub changes onto? I imagine it's just the development
tree on launchpad, but I thought I'd check.

 - What keys would you like to use? As we are using static keys, we will
need to embed an x509 certificate for verifying grub in firmware. We
will need a production certificate, and we can also support test keys
while firmware is still in development. Either you can supply a test key
or you can use the existing 'imprint' keys that we are using. (Neither
will be supported in production firmware builds - this is just for
before we hit production firmware levels.)

 - The addition of a signed binary will make installing grub more
complicated, as grub-install (out of the box) will create and install an
unsigned binary. There's also likely implications for the installer.
What parts of this process do you need us to develop?

Building, Signing and Testing
=

If you would like to, you can experiment with this already using qemu
and SLOF, although our production solution will only support PFW.
Details are on the list: https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/grub-
devel/2020-10/msg00048.html

A slightly more involved process is required for a fully generic distro-
friendly solution, we can share more details on that.
