[Bug 1905383] Re: Xubuntu hirsute live system, on shutdown no "Please remove the installation medium, then press ENTER:" message appeared

2020-12-11 Thread Chris Guiver
another xubuntu hirsute QA-test on same box
- dell [optiplex] 755 (c2d-e8300, 8gb, amd/ati radeon rv610/radeon hd2400
pro/xt)

no message, it was left >35 mins with xubuntu on each display &
circling-loopy thing, but no message appeared.

the xubuntu logo isn't centered on the displays (it is on one, but not
the other), as they are being used at different resolutions (1280x1024 &
1024x???;) and I think the "Please remove the.." message is being drawn
off-screen..

Next boot & install on different box (2x 1920x1080) & message appears at
bottom of screen; both message centered on display

[Bug 1907871] Re: duplicate items on panel (wifi, bluetooth)

2020-12-11 Thread Chris Guiver
** Description changed:

- will add shortly (on real keyboard, with pic)
+ hirsute daily QA-test (live) on
+ - sony vaio svp112a1cw (i5-9400u, 4gb, intel haswell-ULT)

- when connecting to wifi, the VOLUME item also appeared to chance along
- in manner like the wifi were doing; this is unexpected
+ there are duplicate ICONS on TOP (right) panel
+
+ See https://photos.app.goo.gl/em8juaWYnLRTvyPv9
+
+ (1) - bluetooth
+ (2) - wifi
+ (3) - notifications
+ (4) - bluetooth (again?)
+ (5) - wifi (again?)
+ (6) - battery
+ (7) - volume
+ (8) - clock
+
+ ** expected results
+
+ I don't expect BLUETOOTH of WIFI to be duplicated
+
+ ** other notes
+
+ I don't see anything unexpected in panel.preferences->items
+
+
+ ALSO NOTICED:
+
+ When i connected to WIFI, the speaker/volume ICON seemed to rotate in a
+ like fashion to the two WIFI indicator.icons.
+
+ Visually it quite possibly wasn't the same, but the effect was every
+ second one was doing the same thing; ie. visual effect during wifi
+ connection on panel items 2, 5 & 7
+
+ On disconnected & reconnecting.. it's more the VOLUME icon is flashing
+ in sync with the circling of the other two.. but this effect repeated
+ on subsequent disconnect/reconnects to the (hidden wpa2) wifi network.
+
+ (maybe duplicate, I didn't find one sorry)
+

[Bug 1907432] Re: Raspberry Pi 400 Kernel Panic

2020-12-11 Thread Dave Jones
@juergh I've seen both the "bare" reboot: Power down followed by a long-
ish delay and a kernel panic, and the repeated rcu_preempt messages that
you posted in comment 10 under 1008. Neither appear to occur in 1007 so
I'm guessing they might both be symptoms of the same issue? I'll see if
I can hook up a serial console to a 400 this weekend and see if I can
goad it into producing the kernel panic to get some legible output.

My rough observations are the rcu_preempt error occurs most of the time
(I haven't seen the "bare" reboot: Power down error in a while), but
I've definitely seen both under 1008 with the former the more common
one.

[Bug 1384532] Re: Unable to set AppArmor profile [...] no such file or directory

2020-12-11 Thread Jason Fisher
I also fixed a similar issue that complained about AppArmor and
qemu-system-x86_64 by deleting the /etc/apparmor.d/libvirt/libvirt* files. The
files were owned by root and the first file was zero bytes long.
I did not need to restart and was able to start the VM immediately.

2020-12-11 Thread Juan Manuel Diaz
Public bug reported:

Hi! I have an HP ProBook 440 G7 with i7-10510U and INTEL UHD GRAPHICS.

The problem:

When i connect to my external monitor (a Samsung BX2250) via HDMI, the
screen is detected (i can see it in display settings) but the external
monitor remains black. Seams like a bad frequency or resolution. I tried
adding a new mode to xrandr with no luck. Also i tried different
versions of kernels from 5.4 to 5.9.

I am using Ubuntu 20.10

[Bug 1907761] Re: vanishing kernel 5.4.0-56-generic

2020-12-11 Thread Birgit Edel
This link is what *should* have been easily discoverable for anyone
wondering about the vanished version:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1907262

Ideas:
* allow updating USNs even when no new binaries are available, simply because
changelogs are *not*
* add this possibility to the list of theories ubuntu-security-status
(update-manager) helpfully explains when reporting unknown packages
* make "DELETED" a more prominent feature on links from USNs (obvious:

obvious: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/5.4.0-56.62)

[Bug 1907869] [NEW] Weird audio problems UR22C

2020-12-11 Thread Elias Batek
Public bug reported:

Occurs only with my audio interface Steinberg UR22C, which is connected
via USB-C.

This is a regression.
Latest kernel known to work properly was: linux-image-5.4.0-48-generic.
(If I boot my current system with this one, everything's working fine.)

As far as I can tell this broke with vthe v5.4.0-51 update.

## Problem 1:
On reboot: after a few seconds playback stops (and freezes the application that
was currently playing audio).

### For v5.4.0-56
This happens only once after each boot. Works fine after closing the hanging
player.

### With v5.4.0-51
This used to occur again and again, plus the playback freeze was permanent.
Workaround: pulseaudio --kill +then: pulseaudio --start until the next freeze
would happen)

### Characteristics
Audio would suddenly go completely silent.

## Problem 2:
Applies to v5.4.0-56
After starting some playback the first few seconds will also "contain" some
unpleasant weird crackles.

[Bug 1906627] Please test proposed package

2020-12-11 Thread Łukasz Zemczak
Hello Rolf, or anyone else affected,

Accepted cyrus-sasl2 into bionic-proposed. The package will build now
and be available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cyrus-
sasl2/2.1.27~101-g0780600+dfsg-3ubuntu2.3 in a few hours, and then in
the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been
performed on the package and change the tag from verification-needed-
bionic to verification-done-bionic. If it does not fix the bug for you,
please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-
failed-bionic. In either case, without details of your testing we will
not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s)
fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in
-proposed for a minimum of 7 days.

[Bug 1872476] Re: Shared files are shown as folders

2020-12-11 Thread Sergio Durigan Junior
Finally! Thanks for the detailed steps, Lee. I was finally able to
reproduce it locally.

For the record, these are the commands you can issue to reproduce.
Suppose that you have a samba share named "sambashare" serving a
directory at $HOME/testshare.

$ gio mount smb://127.0.0.1/sambashare

$ gio copy Downloads/test.jpg smb://127.0.0.1/sambashare/
$ gio move $HOME/testshare/test.jpg $HOME
$ gio copy $HOME/test.jpg $HOME/testshare/
$ gio info smb://127.0.0.1/sambashare/test.jpg | grep '^type:'
type: directory

This looks exactly like the bug I fixed for the SMBv1 protocol, but it's
happening with SMBv3. I will now finally be able to investigate further
what may be happening here.

Thanks again.

2020-12-11 Thread Matthieu Clemenceau
Excellent.

Finally Can you verify the latest update for bionic and xenial on this ppa.
Once confirmed we should be able to formally release everything

Also in preparation for the SRU, it is required to have some steps to
reproduce the problem and explain how to confirm it is resolved, Can you
provide me those steps?

Thank you!
Matthieu

[Bug 1906496] Re: [SRU] mgr can be very slow in a large ceph cluster

2020-12-11 Thread Corey Bryant
Thanks for the patches Ponnuvel.

New versions of ceph with the sponsored changes to fix this bug have
been uploaded to stein-staging and the bionic unapproved queue.

@Ponnuvel, would you mind helping to test this once it is available in
proposed? I think the [Test Case] section above needs updating. I think
it can be something simpler to verify that the fix is working as
designed.

Thanks,
Corey

[Bug 1664818] Re: Not possible to render pre-up, pre-down, post-up, or post-down snippets

2020-12-11 Thread Steve Langasek
To my knowledge, networkd-dispatcher has no way to do 'pre' hooks on
systemd-networkd events, so this is still a valid feature request.

[Bug 1907432] Re: Raspberry Pi 400 Kernel Panic

2020-12-11 Thread Johannes Hinterberger
So, I took 1007 from the repository and repeated the force-command
suggested by @waveform. Thx for the workaround, yes, this Kernel does
not lead to a Panic. Thx.

@Juerg, the output is starting with the "shutting down" line, and after
about 10 minutes, the non blinking cursor is replaced by a few of your
lines which are shown up above. Also with "Kernel Panic". I don't know
how to log this.

I did some photos of it, but the content is not readable, a pity.. For
the moment, I try to avoid 5.8.0-1008-raspi. I crashed lots of sd-cards
in past, because of switching on/off with power-supply-only.

But, I'm ready to support. If I have a way to log everything till after
kernel panic, I can submit further logs/files.

Well, is a really close (or same) behaviur like exposed in
https://bugs.debian.org/825394 (shared by Axel).

Screen version 4.8.0-1. The system (or either systemd) has modifications
at all, so is really weird.

@Juergh, no. In your dump the wording "Kernel Panic" never appears.

A pity... I cannot log this. If I could, I'd able to do include a copy
of it.

@waveform, I'll try it.

[Bug 1900008] Re: Sessions of screen does not keep running in background

2020-12-11 Thread Gustavo A . Díaz
Hi, first of all I don' t know why I did' t receive any notification of
this bug report.

Second, and to clarify, I being using screen command since 2000 (which
Is my beginning as Linux admin). This being said, I know how it works.

All my other Ubuntu upgrades from 18.04 to 20.04, this does not happen
(I do not have time yet to test it in a new Ubuntu 20.04, maybe later in
a VM).

Simple test: open screen. Just close you terminal (not exit...). When I
want to recover screen session with screen -x, is gone, none, nothing...

Btw, I only tested this KDE Neon, which is Ubuntu 20.04 based and I
think has nothing to do that is KDE based, since screen has nothing to
do with it.

[Bug 1904458] Re: [linux-azure] Batch hibernate and resume IO requests

2020-12-11 Thread Marcelo Cerri
Targeting only 5.4 and 5.8 since 4.15 will not support hibernation.

** Changed in: linux-azure (Ubuntu Focal)
   Status: New => In Progress

** Changed in: linux-azure (Ubuntu Groovy)
   Status: New => In Progress

** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+
Microsoft would like to request the following upstream commit in all
releases supported on Azure. This commit improves a signification delay
  in hibernation/resume:

55c4478a8f0e("PM: hibernate: Batch hibernate and resume IO requests")
-

  Details of this commit:
Hibernate and resume process submits individual IO requests for each page of
the data, so use blk_plug to improve the batching of these requests.

Testing this change with hibernate and resumes consistently shows
merging of the IO requests and more than an order of magnitude
improvement in hibernate and resume speed is observed.

One hibernate and resume cycle for 16GB RAM out of 32GB in use takes
around 21 minutes before the change, and 1 minutes after the change on a
  system with limited storage IOPS.
+
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ Follow the steps described here:
+
+ https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-
+ azure/+bug/1880032/comments/14
+
+ And compare the time need to save the instance state.
+
+
+ [Where problems could occur]
+
+ Considering the size of the patch and the code it touches, the most
+ likely issues are related to hibernation itself. Considering the
+ hibernation isn't officially support, any hibernation issues should even
+ considered regressions.

[Bug 1904458] Re: [linux-azure] Batch hibernate and resume IO requests

2020-12-11 Thread Marcelo Cerri
I tested the change on Azure using Standard L8s_v2 (8 vcpus, 64 GiB
memory) VMs using the 5.4 linux-azure kernel on bionic and the 5.8
kernel on groovy.

During my tests the VMs continued to successfully hibernate with the
patch and the time needed to save the VM state went down from 25 seconds
to around 3 seconds.

[Bug 1879805] Re: nzbget not working because of free unrar

2020-12-11 Thread Am Laher
I've come to install nzbget 3 or 4 times in the past 5 years. Each time,
I forget about this workaround and almost give up ...

> nzbget not eligible for universe anymore (it has to be moved to
multiverse)

I'd sooner see it in multiverse and working properly.

Alternatively, I think we might be good if nzbget itself was able to
hint at the problem itself ... Possibly this code could be changed to
recognise "invalid option" errors, and to make appropriate
recommendations:

https://github.com/nzbget/nzbget/blob/f8f9dd2b6d82d4be96c45a70f889162a43e7a461/daemon/postprocess/DirectUnpack.cpp#L209

It might also be beneficial to add some info in the UI - e.g. the
`UnrarCmd` notes.

I'll see if I can make a PR for this in nzbget

[Bug 1900584] Re: Regression: suspend/wake-up no longer working properly

2020-12-11 Thread craigleat
The crux of the problem is an API mismatch between the kernel module and
the nvidia driver. The problem arises in the normal course of applying
updates and not from user tinkering (see #1).

$ uname -a
Linux OptiPlex-380 5.4.0-47-generic #51-Ubuntu SMP Fri Sep 4 19:50:52 UTC 2020
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

$ journalctl -b -k | grep -m 1 -A 3 "API mismatch"
Dec 11 21:07:00 OptiPlex-380 kernel: NVRM: API mismatch: the client has the
version
   455.38, but
NVRM: this kernel module has the version
440.100.
   Please
NVRM: make sure that this kernel module
and all
   NVIDIA driver
NVRM: components have the same version.

$ apt-cache depends linux-modules-nvidia-455-generic
linux-modules-nvidia-455-generic
  Depends: linux-modules-nvidia-455-5.4.0-54-generic
  Depends: nvidia-kernel-common-455
  Depends: nvidia-kernel-common-455

There's no nvidia kernel module for 455 and 5.4.0-47 and hence the
broken system. Boot 5.4.0-54 and everything works. Upgrade[boot]
5.4.0-57 and the system breaks again.

[Bug 1900008] Re: Sessions of screen does not keep running in background

2020-12-11 Thread Guilherme G. Piccoli
That's interesting, I just performed your suggested test, and I couldn't
reproduce - it's a fresh Ubuntu 20.04 install, running MATE (not KDE!)
and GNU screen 4.8.0-1. After closing the terminal, I've opened another
one and "screen -x" worked fine, as expected.

Could you try to use MATE / Gnome to perform your test? So we can
isolate it to KDE (or not). Also, which version of screen is installed
in your system? Thanks!

[Bug 1907432] Re: Raspberry Pi 400 Kernel Panic

2020-12-11 Thread Dave Jones
Quick note on a workaround: I've found on my pi400 that reverting to
kernel 1007 works around the issue. If you've still got 1007 installed
(a quick "ls /boot" should confirm that if you see lots of *-1007-raspi
files lying around) you can temporarily switch to it like so:

$ sudo flash-kernel --force 5.8.0-1007-raspi

This will force flash-kernel to copy the older kernel (and dtbs etc.) to
the boot partition instead of the latest (obviously you need to reboot
afterward to use the 1007 kernel). flash-kernel will warn in its output
that installing another kernel will just overwrite this, but that's
*probably* what you want anyway (assuming the next upgrade fixes this).

[Bug 1907845] [NEW] upgrade ubuntu18.04 to 20.04

2020-12-11 Thread datoe
Public bug reported:

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.

 This was likely caused by:
 * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
Please use the tool 'ppa-purge' from the ppa-purge
package to remove software from a Launchpad PPA and
try the upgrade again.

If none of this applies, then please report this bug using the command
'ubuntu-bug ubuntu-release-upgrader-core' in a terminal. If you want to
investigate this yourself the log files in '/var/log/dist-upgrade' will
contain details about the upgrade. Specifically, look at 'main.log' and

[Bug 1712808] Re: udev interface fails in privileged containers

For reference, the PR that Zygmunt had which was planned to fix this was

that approach. We need to pick it up again and rework to get an approach
which matches the comments from Jamie there.

So far so good, but now assume the root user actually has C configured

update):

This should show the sv locale as well given that it's still around
(also we are still running with LANG=sv_SE.UTF-8), but it only generated
the cache with the english language description in here.

[Bug 1899232] Re: ansible fails with systemd 245.4

2020-12-11 Thread Dan Streetman
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1905245 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1905245

you didn't say specifically what's causing ansible to fail, but the fix
you referenced suggests this is a dup of 1905245, so i'll mark it as
such.

[Bug 1906155] Re: USB Passthrough Fails on Start, Needs domain Reset

2020-12-11 Thread Russell Morris
OK, I got to thinking about this other bug I had seen a while back. Initially
thought it was not related, but maybe it is after all?
https://bugs.launchpad.net/qemu/+bug/1694808

Perhaps we are using different USB controllers, and that's why we see different
results? I have the following ... match to your setup?

And my USB device,

So the USB device is on ich9-uhci2, correct?

Thanks!

[Bug 1904419] Re: Upgrade glibc 2.32 by required upstream patches

2020-12-11 Thread Frank Heimes
Ok, just wanted to be sure - this will justify a glibc SRU.
(clicking the bug number earlier opened it as LP bug, which is
wrong and is usually an indicator for me that it's an internal IBM BZ number -
but I've found the glibc upstream BZs now
 thx ...)
I've created a first SRU justification based on upstream info and added it to
the bug description above.
And I've also marked this bug as 'regression' (add it as tag) and such
regressions are usually marked (in LP) as critical as well.

** Tags added: regression

** Changed in: ubuntu-z-systems
   Importance: High => Critical

** Description changed:

+ SRU Justification:
+
+ [Impact]
+
+ * The glibc version 2.32 in groovy has some regressions with the
+ following impact:
+
+ * A regression that got introduced by commit
+ ffd178c651b827f24acead02284abbb12f3f723b can lead to a crash, because
+ __shmctl calls shmid_to_shmid64 on the input buffer even when cmd is
+ IPC_INFO. If SHM_INFO is immediately followed by unmapped memory,
+ shmid_to_shmid64 will read past its end into unmapped memory and will
+ crash.
+
+ * Starting with glibc-2.31.9000-687-g3283f71113 (glibc-2.32~83) IPC_INFO
+ and MSG_INFO commands of __msgctl and __msgctl64 return garbage because
+ a pointer to an internal buffer on the stack is passed to the kernel.
+ The buffer specified by the user remains unchanged after IPC_INFO and
+ MSG_INFO commands.
+
+ * semctl SEM_STAT_ANY fails to pass the buffer specified by the caller
+ to the kernel. The kernel receives garbage instead of union semun.buf
+ address specified by the caller.
+
+ [ Fix ]
+
+ * a49d7fd4f764e97ccaf922e433046590ae52fce9 "32-bit shmctl(IPC_INFO)
+ crashes when shminfo struct is at the end of a memory mapping"
+
+ * 20a00dbefca5695cccaa44846a482db8ccdd85ab "msgctl IPC_INFO and MSG_INFO
+ return garbage"
+
+ * 574500a108be1d2a6a0dc97a075c9e0a98371aba "semctl SEM_STAT_ANY fails to
+ pass the buffer specified by the caller to the kernel"
+
+ [ Test Case ]
+
+ Execute test script available upstream (1) here:
+
+ And run the test suite with the newly introduced test-cases that came
+ with the commits.
+
+ [ Where problems could occur ]
+
+ * glibc modification are usually quite sensitive.
+
+ * Erroneous modifications (1) in the area of IPC and SHM (i.e. IPC_INFO
+ and MSG_INFO) and it's control may lead to an even bigger impact - and
+ in worst case the crashes go beyond the case where shminfo is
+ immediately followed by unmapped memory and could happen always (which
+ would break the system entirely).
+
+ * Returning (3) or passing over and pointing to wrong buffers (2), or in
worst case to other unwanted areas, can cause virtually any unforeseen
consequences.
+ Returning garbage is only one aspect, returning wrong data and even modifying
it would be even worse.
+
+ [Other Info]
+
+ * All fixes are upstream accepted and are part of glibc 2.33.
+
+ __
+
The current libc6-2.32-0ubuntu3 package lacks some of the upstream glibc
commits on the "release/2.32/master" branch (see

http://sourceware.org/git/?p=glibc.git;a=shortlog;h=refs/heads/release/2.32/master).
Does Ubuntu automatically pick the commits from this release branch?

Otherwise, please update to the latest commits on this branch, especially for:
  - 2dfa659a66 resolv: Handle transaction ID collisions in parallel queries
(bug 26600)
  - 0b9460d22e sysvipc: Fix IPC_INFO and SHM_INFO handling [BZ #26636]
  - c4aeedea59 sysvipc: Fix IPC_INFO and MSG_INFO handling [BZ #26639]
  - 9b139b6b81 sysvipc: Fix SEM_STAT_ANY kernel argument pass [BZ #26637]
  - ...

[Bug 1906229] Re: Refresh ACPI wakeup power to make Thunderbolt hotplug detection work

2020-12-11 Thread Ubuntu Kernel Bot
This bug is awaiting verification that the kernel in -proposed solves
the problem. Please test the kernel and update this bug with the
results. If the problem is solved, change the tag 'verification-needed-
focal' to 'verification-done-focal'. If the problem still exists, change
the tag 'verification-needed-focal' to 'verification-failed-focal'.

If verification is not done by 5 working days from today, this fix will
be dropped from the source code, and this bug will be closed.

See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how
to enable and use -proposed. Thank you!

[Bug 1161743] Re: Typos in russian description for package libxml2

2020-12-11 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
For the record we had an IRC conversation here:

https://irclogs.ubuntu.com/2020/12/11/%23launchpad.html

I think it makes more sense to open a new apt bug. Not quite sure at the
moment what the issue is, though...

As said on IRC, I'll do some tests later. If you already know what a
proper bug summary would be, please go ahead and create a new bug.

[Bug 1907761] Re: vanishing kernel 5.4.0-56-generic

2020-12-11 Thread Gord
OK I have now officially had enough of this ToyTown Distro.

You make a severe CRITICAL mistake and then try to triage it away by
insisting we use a tool that simply does not work.

This bug is not even assigned to anyone yet.

That tells me everything I need to know about whether to persist with
this idiocy.

Not only are you feckless cretins, you are also incapable of fixing your
own mess. And the reporting procedures are hopeless.

My recommendation to management is that we find another solution as a
matter of urgency.

Goodbye.

[Bug 1890448] Re: hwdb: Add EliteBook to use micmute hotkey

2020-12-11 Thread Dan Streetman
@kaihengfeng, can we skip Xenial since that goes ESM soon?

** Description changed:

  [Impact]
Micmute hotkey on many HP EliteBooks don't work.

  [Fix]
Commit b6eb208b29ae ("hwdb: Add EliteBook to use micmute hotkey"), to map AT
keyboard's scancode to micmute hotkey.

  [Test]
With the one-liner fix, micmute hotkey works on all the EliteBooks I tested.

  [Regression Potential]
The hwdb originally only matches a few EliteBook, and fix changes that to
match all EliteBook models. So if there's an EliteBook that uses the scancode
for other purpose, there will be a regression.
However, the risk is rather slim because HP is confident that all EliteBooks
use the same scancode for mic mute hotkey.
+
+ [scope]
+
+ this is needed for f and earlier.
+
+ this is fixed upstream by commit b6eb208b29ae which is included starting
+ in v246, so g and later are already fixed.
