[Bug 1925320] Re: Backport packages for 20.04.3 HWE stack

2021-07-05 Thread Timo Aaltonen
best to file a separate bug anyway

that said, I'm not sure if this should block the updates, since I wasn't
able to reproduce it with a gpu of the same family

[Bug 1934709] Re: btrfs: Automatic balance returns -EUCLEAN and leads to forced readonly filesystem

2021-07-05 Thread Matthew Ruffell
** Description changed:

  BugLink: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1934709

  [Impact]

  During an automatic balance, users may encounter an error when writing
  the transaction log to disk, when the log tree is being parsed, which
  forces the filesystem to be remounted read-only and outputs the
  following kernel oops:

  BTRFS error (device dm-14): pending csums is 269639680

  This bug appears to be linked to bug 1933172, but is different and has a
  different root cause. Again, I believe that this is a regression
  introduced in the fixing of CVE-2019-19036, from 4.15.0-109-generic.

  [Fix]

  Analysis of the kernel oops is as follows:

  The first thing we see is that BTRFS entered ERROR state with the
  reason:

  in balance_level:1962: errno=-117 unknown

  Now errno -117 is:

  100 #define EUCLEAN 117 /* Structure needs cleaning */

  btrfs treats -EUCLEAN as if corruption has happened. Let's see where
  this is returned from.

  If we start at fs/btrfs/ctree.c in balance_level(), line 1962:

  1917 static noinline int balance_level(struct btrfs_trans_handle *trans,
  1918  struct btrfs_root *root,
  1919 struct btrfs_path *path, int level)
  1920 {
  ...
  1958 /* promote the child to a root */
  1959 child = read_node_slot(fs_info, mid, 0);
  1960 if (IS_ERR(child)) {
  1961 ret = PTR_ERR(child);
  1962 btrfs_handle_fs_error(fs_info, ret, NULL);
  1963 goto enospc;
  1964 }
  ...
  2136 }

  We are in the middle of a balancing operation, and if you happen to be
  familiar with how b-tree data structures work, we are promoting a child
  node to a topmost root node.

  The error most likely happens in read_node_slot(), with the lines after
  it printing that an error has happened.

  1887 static noinline struct extent_buffer *
  1888 read_node_slot(struct btrfs_fs_info *fs_info, struct extent_buffer
*parent,
  1889int slot)
  1890 {
  ...
  1900 btrfs_node_key_to_cpu(parent, _key, slot);
  1901 eb = read_tree_block(fs_info, btrfs_node_blockptr(parent, slot),
  1902  btrfs_node_ptr_generation(parent, slot),
  1903  level - 1, _key);
  ...
  1910 }

  There are two calls here which are relevant. btrfs_node_key_to_cpu() and
  read_tree_block().

  Let's look at read_tree_block() in fs/btrfs/disk-io.c:

  1147 struct extent_buffer *read_tree_block(struct btrfs_fs_info *fs_info, u64
bytenr,
  1148   u64 parent_transid, int level,
  1149   struct btrfs_key *first_key)
  1150 {
  1151 struct extent_buffer *buf = NULL;
  1152 int ret;
  1153
  1154 buf = btrfs_find_create_tree_block(fs_info, bytenr);
  1155 if (IS_ERR(buf))
  1156 return buf;
  1157
  1158 ret = btree_read_extent_buffer_pages(fs_info, buf, parent_transid,
  1159  level, first_key);
  1160 if (ret) {
  1161 free_extent_buffer_stale(buf);
  1162 return

Please add to your comment at linuxuprising that the "previously
installed version" is actually a Snap, and also which Ubuntu version you
are using.

[Bug 1934647] Re: Nvidia driver black screen at login.

2021-07-05 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks for the bug report. Please be careful to only report one problem
per bug. You can open multiple bugs.

Let's make this bug about the black screen issue only. To debug that
further we will need to see a system log from when the Nvidia driver was
installed and you did NOT have "recovery nomodeset" kernel parameters.

Please run:

  journalctl -b-1 > prevboot1.txt
  journalctl -b-2 > prevboot2.txt
  journalctl -b-3 > prevboot3.txt
  journalctl -b-4 > prevboot4.txt
  journalctl -b-5 > prevboot5.txt

and attach the resulting text files.

[Bug 1934709] [NEW] btrfs: Automatic balance returns -EUCLEAN and leads to forced readonly filesystem

2021-07-05 Thread Matthew Ruffell
Public bug reported:

BugLink: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1934709

[Impact]

During an automatic balance, users may encounter an error when writing
the transaction log to disk, when the log tree is being parsed, which
forces the filesystem to be remounted read-only and outputs the
following kernel oops:

BTRFS: error (device dm-14) in balance_level:1962: errno=-117 unknown

BTRFS error (device dm-14): pending csums is 269639680

This bug appears to be linked to bug 1933172, but is different and has a
different root cause. Again, I believe that this is a regression
introduced in the fixing of CVE-2019-19036, from 4.15.0-109-generic.

[Fix]

Analysis of the kernel oops is as follows:

The first thing we see is that BTRFS entered ERROR state with the
reason:

in balance_level:1962: errno=-117 unknown

Now errno -117 is:

100 #define EUCLEAN 117 /* Structure needs cleaning */

btrfs treats -EUCLEAN as if corruption has happened. Let's see where
this is returned from.

If we start at fs/btrfs/ctree.c in balance_level(), line 1962:

1917 static noinline int balance_level(struct btrfs_trans_handle *trans,
1918  struct btrfs_root *root,
1919 struct btrfs_path *path, int level)
1920 {
...
1958 /* promote the child to a root */
1959 child = read_node_slot(fs_info, mid, 0);
1960 if (IS_ERR(child)) {
1961 ret = PTR_ERR(child);
1962 btrfs_handle_fs_error(fs_info, ret, NULL);
1963 goto enospc;
1964 }
...
2136 }

1888 read_node_slot(struct btrfs_fs_info *fs_info, struct extent_buffer *parent,
1889int slot)
1890 {
...
1900 btrfs_node_key_to_cpu(parent, _key, slot);
1901 eb = read_tree_block(fs_info, btrfs_node_blockptr(parent, slot),
1902  btrfs_node_ptr_generation(parent, slot),
1903  level - 1, _key);
...
1910 }

There are two calls here which are relevant. btrfs_node_key_to_cpu() and
read_tree_block().

Let's look at read_tree_block() in fs/btrfs/disk-io.c:

1147 struct extent_buffer *read_tree_block(struct btrfs_fs_info *fs_info, u64
bytenr,
1148   u64 parent_transid, int level,
1149   struct btrfs_key *first_key)
1150 {
1151 struct extent_buffer *buf = NULL;
1152 int ret;
1153
1154 buf = btrfs_find_create_tree_block(fs_info, bytenr);
1155 if (IS_ERR(buf))
1156 return buf;
1157
1158 ret = btree_read_extent_buffer_pages(fs_info, buf, parent_transid,
1159  level, first_key);
1160 if (ret) {
1161 free_extent_buffer_stale(buf);
1162 return ERR_PTR(ret);
1163 }
1164 return buf;
1165
1166 }

The interesting one here is btree_read_extent_buffer_pages():

498 static int btree_read_extent_buffer_pages(struct btrfs_fs_info *fs_info,
499

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

Bug reporting is mostly about finding & fixing problems thus preventing
future users from hitting the same bug.

I suspect a Support site would be more appropriate, eg.
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu. You can also find help with your
problem in the support forum of your local Ubuntu community
http://loco.ubuntu.com/ or asking at https://askubuntu.com or
https://ubuntuforums.org, or for more support options please look at

2021-07-05 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks Norbert. Reddit seems convinced this is a kernel regression in
5.11 which would line up with the findings here, so let's go with that
for now.

[Bug 1909805] Re: libclc-amdgcn missing files for current AMD APUs

2021-07-05 Thread Ole Jon Bjørkum
Same problem too with Radeon RX 5500 XT. It worked on my Radeon RX 570
(AMD X570 + Ryzen 3950X). Using the generic ICD and Mesa OpenCL doesn't
work.

The easy fix that also gives better results on all benchmarks I've done
for Vulkan and OpenGL is installing the latest AMDGPU Pro driver
(version 21.20) from AMD.com. Remember to specify:

--opencl=rocr

It's Open Source as most AMD projects.
https://github.com/RadeonOpenCompute/ROCm

So NVIDIA users can use most of AMD's stuff because of being FOSS, like
the below mentioned FidelityFX, is Open Source and appears for NVIDIA
users too in the growing number of games supporting it. NVIDIA however
contribute little back...

PS: Previously it was --opencl=PAL but that is deprecated. The
installation docs and script help are updated good and now finally tells
what legacy is (older than Vega 10). Using --help on the installation
script tells what you need. Basically just that you specify (IDK what it
does if you don't specify an OpenCL type but you can check with --dry-
run and see if it installs packages with "rocr", the new, or "orca", the
old. If you use the pro installation script, it is the same as
specifying --pro on the all-free unless pro is specified.

Adding legacy OpenCL as well is NO point, as shown as an example in the
docs, only if you switch between this and older than Vega 10 cards, as
that legacy loader doesn't work alone, but doesn't matter if it's
installed, however say Geekbench will complain about a lacking library
(.so). Legacy for older than Vega 10 AMD Support told me before they
added it to the docs.

Supports Ubuntu 20.04.2 and Ubuntu 18.04.5. Made the mistake of
installing the previous that said Ubuntu 20.04.1 while having 20.04.2,
as I supposed it wouldn't matter, as I've never had problems before.
However, didn't work. Then of course like days later they had released
one with "initial support" (because 1 known issue but rare use case),
then soon after the current with a fix for that. As soon as installed,
as it uses DKMS, I'm sure say when 20.04.3 comes it'll just work. Driver
uses a local apt repo so must be manually updated (which is good if
you're very satisfied with the one you've got now).

Keep in mind apparently there will be a new driver with some good
updates to FidelityFX etc, although that already works in the 21.10
driver (Shadow of The Tomb Raider for example).

[Bug 1934701] [NEW] external USB drive hangs and unable to recover without hard reset

2021-07-05 Thread Jim Basilio
Public bug reported:

As also reported on the Raspberry Pi bug report:
https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux/issues/3981

I'm experiencing this with all 5.x kernels usually within a day or 2 of a
restart:
Jun 29 20:20:35 tiny-myth kernel: [85834.433030] xhci_hcd :04:00.0: WARN
Cannot submit Set TR Deq Ptr
 Jun 29 20:20:35 tiny-myth kernel: [85834.433052] xhci_hcd :04:00.0: A Set
TR Deq Ptr command is pending.
 Jun 29 20:20:35 tiny-myth kernel: [85834.565209] usb 9-2: reset SuperSpeed Gen
1 USB device number 2 using xhci_hcd
 Jun 29 20:21:06 tiny-myth kernel: [85865.665815] xhci_hcd :04:00.0: WARN
Cannot submit Set TR Deq Ptr
 Jun 29 20:21:06 tiny-myth kernel: [85865.665838] xhci_hcd :04:00.0: A Set
TR Deq Ptr command is pending.
 Jun 29 20:21:06 tiny-myth kernel: [85865.805725] usb 9-2: reset SuperSpeed Gen
1 USB device number 2 using xhci_hcd

I've rolled back to 4.19 kernel and error did occur once but appears to
happen less frequently (running for a few days now and hasn't
triggered).

This is on a device that's been running fine since 2012 with none of
these issues until I upgraded to 20.04 in January 2021, at which point
I've had to reboot the device constantly to re-attach to storage.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.

[Bug 1934699] [NEW] Error messages indisinguishable from app or firejail

2021-07-05 Thread Bill Yikes
Public bug reported:

It's really annoying that firejail simply tags error msgs with "Error:",
and not "Firejail error:".

How are users supposed to know if the error is reported by Firejail, or
the app that firejail is running?

This code is littered with anonymous error messages that makes
troubleshooting difficult:

https://github.com/netblue30/firejail/blob/master/src/firejail/main.c

E.g.

fprintf(stderr, "Error: too many environment variables\n");

** Affects: firejail (Ubuntu)

[Bug 1934698] [NEW] "too short arguments" error

2021-07-05 Thread Bill Yikes
Public bug reported:

This command results in "Error: too short arguments":

$ firejail pastebinit -a '' -b paste.debian.net -i - <<< "hello world"

Even if a "--" parameter terminator is used to prevent firejail from
treating a non-firejail argument as a firejail argument like this:

$ firejail -- pastebinit -a '' -b paste.debian.net -i - <<< "hello
world"

it still results in "Error: too short arguments". The offending code is
here:

https://github.com/netblue30/firejail/blob/master/src/firejail/main.c#L1028

It's of course overstepping for firejail to impose requirements on args
passed to other applications. The the example at hand, the "-a ''"
ensures that the author of a pastebin remains unnamed in the event that
pastebinit would decide to default to something like $(whoami).

This bug triggers in firejail version 0.9.64.4.

I guess the issues with microphone described in

must have the same cause as in this case as the audio hardware should be
identical.

and my user account. Likewise, I have automatic login turned on so I
don't have to type my password twice, as it would be quite redundant.

With automatic login turned on, I thus changed my password for my
default keyring to be nothing, as one, the security of full-disk
encryption solves all of the needs that a keyring password would for me,
and two, I'd like to not have to enter my keyring password every time I
boot.

Issue is that for some strange reason the keyring password miraculously
keeps resetting to the password of my user account. I don't know why, I
don't know how, but it's been happening for at least the past couple of
months, awaiting me to make an Ubuntu One account so I could report the
issue.

The machine that's affected has been wiped at least three times over the
past few months (due to various reasons), and the issue has also
happened on another machine I was temporarily using at one point.

[Bug 1692394]

2021-07-05 Thread Gnome-sysadmin
GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org.
As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org
which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately
quite limited so not every ticket can get handled).

If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent
and supported software version, then please follow
  https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines
and create a new ticket at
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/-/issues/

Thank you for your understanding and your help.

[Bug 1828638] Re: Support sane option --scan-area on GUI applications

2021-07-05 Thread UlfZibis
** Description changed:

  Several sane backends provide the option --scan-area to guarantee the
  scan is correctly aligned, even if the scan area with automatic document
  feeder (ADF) is right-aligned in contrast to the flatbed of the same
  device, which is normally left-aligned.

  Currently SimpleScan and XSane only support options -l -t -x -y, which
  leads to misalignment of some scanners when using the ADF.

  As example for this problem see:
