[Bug 1915501] Re: init.d script fails to set socket ownership and permissions on slower systems

2021-08-27 Thread Nick Tait
Hi Harald.

I'm happy for this bug to be closed.

(FYI I'm currently in the process of decommissioning this old server,
and replacing it with a new machine which supports the latest Ubuntu
distro.)

Nick.

[Bug 1941937] Re: kubuntu focal.3 no wallpaper on one display, right-click not working on that display

2021-08-27 Thread Chris Guiver
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

  ** Background

Performing a QA-test install (Lubuntu impish) to
  - hp dc7700 (c2d-e6320, 5gb, nvidia quadro nvs 290)

testcase: install using existing partition (sda1)

  On the box existed
  - Lubuntu focal.3 (system selected for replacing with impish)
  - Xubuntu focal.3 (an install-alongside or auto-resize QA-test)
  - Kubuntu focal.3 (another install-alongside/auto-resize QA-test)

I'm booting the Kubuntu focal.3 expecting no changes.. The QA-test done
days ago was good and I passed it without issues. This will be it's
first login after that initial-post-install checks where I noticed
  nothing wrong.

  ** What I see

My displays are setup to match my config (one display set above the
  other), however

wallpaper on my.bottom display is present & looks normal

NO WALLPAPER appears on my.top display

right-click on my.bottom display is pulling up menu allowing me
  Create.New..Configure.Desktop as expected.

right-click on my.TOP display however does nothing

  Moving windows around is perfect..

  ** ACTUAL BEHAVIOR

Wallpaper on both monitors, not just my.bottom display
Right click of background pulls up menu on both displays, not just my.bottom

  ** EXPECTED BEHAVIOR

Wallpaper on both monitors, and right-click works both displays.

(It did this in the initial boot after QA-test install; this is now 2nd
boot of system which is first time I've noted this behavior)

** Note (LXQt has exhibited same behavior in focal)

This thought is likely red herring - it reminded me of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/openbox/+bug/1845756 which is tagged against openbox
thus doesn't apply here. Originally I said "I've had this behavior before with
LXQt & I can't recall if this was put down to an issue in Qt 5.12.8 (fixed in
later releases), or openbox (which won't apply here of course).."
  --

I'll complete this QA-test and aim to return and add more later.
This box is only used for QA-test installs, so system may not exist for very
long. It's likely more useful if I repeated this with Kubuntu impish... but
vanvugt's comment on
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1930945 implies that's of
limited value

This bug MAYBE should be filed against linux/nouveau

[Bug 1941938] [NEW] systemd trying to unmount non-existent file system

2021-08-27 Thread Charles Meo
Public bug reported:

This output is copied from here: https://github.com/systemd/systemd/issues/20516
because I have not been able to capture the error messages. However what I am
seeing is identical.

sd-umoun[2406]: Failed to unmount /oldroot: Device or resource busy
sd-umoun[2407]: Failed to unmount /oldroot/dev/pts: Device or resource busy
sd-umoun[2408]: Failed to unmount /oldroot/dev: Device or resource busy
shutdown[1]: Failed to finalize file systems, ignoring

This has happened consistently since I upgraded to Ubuntu 20.04 two
weeks ago, and is really annoying. Is there an actual problem or is it
just noise that can be safely ignored?

The only other thing referencing oldroot in its config was snap, which I
have completely uninstalled to isolate the problem.

/lib/systemd/systemd-shutdown also contains this string:
# strings systemd-shutdown |grep old
/oldroot
sigprocmask(SIG_BLOCK, &mask, &oldmask) == 0
sigprocmask(SIG_SETMASK, &oldmask, NULL) == 0

I have never had an /oldroot mount and there isn't one now. I gather it
is something the upgrade process might create, or it could perhaps be
something broken in finalrd.

Bin Li, who posted the above error to the systemd bug portal, got short
shrift there and was told to contact the distro. So I am, as my version
of systemd is 245, same as his. This problem is 100% repeateable and I
see it every time I shutdown or restart.

[Bug 1941937] Re: kubuntu focal.3 no wallpaper on one display, right-click not working on that display

2021-08-27 Thread Chris Guiver
** Description changed:

  ** Background

Performing a QA-test install (Lubuntu impish) to
  - hp dc7700 (c2d-e6320, 5gb, nvidia quadro nvs 290)

testcase: install using existing partition (sda1)

  On the box existed
  - Lubuntu focal.3 (system selected for replacing with impish)
  - Xubuntu focal.3 (an install-alongside or auto-resize QA-test)
  - Kubuntu focal.3 (another install-alongside/auto-resize QA-test)

I'm booting the Kubuntu focal.3 expecting no changes.. The QA-test done
days ago was good and I passed it without issues. This will be it's
first login after that initial-post-install checks where I noticed
  nothing wrong.

  ** What I see

My displays are setup to match my config (one display set above the
  other), however

wallpaper on my.bottom display is present & looks normal

NO WALLPAPER appears on my.top display

right-click on my.bottom display is pulling up menu allowing me
  Create.New..Configure.Desktop as expected.

right-click on my.TOP display however does nothing

  Moving windows around is perfect..

  ** ACTUAL BEHAVIOR

Wallpaper on both monitors, not just my.bottom display
Right click of background pulls up menu on both displays, not just my.bottom

  ** EXPECTED BEHAVIOR

Wallpaper on both monitors, and right-click works both displays.

(It did this in the initial boot after QA-test install; this is now 2nd
boot of system which is first time I've noted this behavior)

** Note (LXQt has exhibited same behavior in focal)

- I've had this behavior before with LXQt & I can't recall if this was put
- down to an issue in Qt 5.12.8 (fixed in later releases), or openbox
- (which won't apply here of course), but I've not time to chase up the

-
+ This thought is likely red herring - it reminded me of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/openbox/+bug/1845756 which is tagged against openbox
thus doesn't apply here. Originally I said "I've had this behavior before with

- https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1930945 (impish)

ie. it's maybe NOT Qt 5.12.8 related; but graphic issue.

[Bug 1941937] [NEW] kubuntu focal.3 no wallpaper on one display, right-click not working on that display

2021-08-27 Thread Chris Guiver
Public bug reported:

** Background

Performing a QA-test install (Lubuntu impish) to
- hp dc7700 (c2d-e6320, 5gb, nvidia quadro nvs 290)

testcase: install using existing partition (sda1)

On the box existed
- Lubuntu focal.3 (system selected for replacing with impish)
- Xubuntu focal.3 (an install-alongside or auto-resize QA-test)
- Kubuntu focal.3 (another install-alongside/auto-resize QA-test)

I'm booting the Kubuntu focal.3 expecting no changes.. The QA-test done
days ago was good and I passed it without issues. This will be it's
first login after that initial-post-install checks where I noticed
nothing wrong.

** What I see

My displays are setup to match my config (one display set above the
other), however

wallpaper on my.bottom display is present & looks normal

NO WALLPAPER appears on my.top display

right-click on my.bottom display is pulling up menu allowing me
Create.New..Configure.Desktop as expected.

right-click on my.TOP display however does nothing

Moving windows around is perfect..

** ACTUAL BEHAVIOR

Wallpaper on both monitors, not just my.bottom display
Right click of background pulls up menu on both displays, not just my.bottom

** EXPECTED BEHAVIOR

Wallpaper on both monitors, and right-click works both displays.

(It did this in the initial boot after QA-test install; this is now 2nd
boot of system which is first time I've noted this behavior)

** Note (LXQt has exhibited same behavior in focal)

I've had this behavior before with LXQt & I can't recall if this was put
down to an issue in Qt 5.12.8 (fixed in later releases), or openbox
(which won't apply here of course), but I've not time to chase up the
bug report I'm thinking of currently sorry.

--

I'll complete this QA-test and aim to return and add more later.
This box is only used for QA-test installs, so system may not exist for very
long. It's likely more useful if I repeated this with Kubuntu impish, but I
suspect it won't be created (esp. if related to the Qt 5.12.8 bug I've alluded
to earlier).. the Lubuntu issue this reminds me of doesn't occur in later
releases.

[Bug 1941790] [NEW] squashfs-tools 4.5 / "write outside directory" exploit fix back port?

2021-08-27 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

You have been subscribed to a public security bug by Seth Arnold (seth-arnold):

The squashfs-tools 4.5 release addresses an issue where `unsquashfs` can
extract files outside of its target directory, given a malicious input
file.

This issue was reported back in 2019 at:
https://github.com/plougher/squashfs-tools/issues/72

The squashfs-tools release notes mention the fix:
https://github.com/plougher/squashfs-tools/blob/master/CHANGES

> 3.13 Unsquashfs "write outside directory" exploit fixed.

Is Ubuntu aware of this issue w.r.t. back porting to distro release
versions squashfs-tools?

[Bug 1939086] Re: autopkgtest failures due to squid "(111) Connection refused" on armhf

2021-08-27 Thread Steve Langasek
I believe the problem here is that ruby honors http_proxy, but does not
honor no_proxy; so because we're in an environment requiring a proxy,
requests that are supposed to go to localhost are sent to the squid
proxy instead.

What I'm not clear on is why this works on runners *except* for armhf,
since all of these runners set http_proxy.

Unfortunately, gem2deb-test-runner does not have support for overriding
the environment the way that pkg-perl-autopkgtest does (via
debian/tests/pkg-perl/smoke-env).

Someone who knows ruby could modify the tests to unset http_proxy from
the environment, which ought to address the problem.

[Bug 1941932] [NEW] Reverting to nouveau driver leaves dead nvidia links causing suspend and shutdown to fail

2021-08-27 Thread Jeff
Public bug reported:

After having problems with the nvidia driver 470, I reverted to the
nouveau driver, only to find that using suspend or shutdown in the XFCE4
menu just returned to the login page. However, I found that using the
'shutdown' or 'pm-suspend' commands worked OK.

Checking syslog after a failed suspend lead me to /etc/systemd/system
directory:

lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root9 Aug 25 15:04  nvidia-hibernate.service -> /dev/null
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root9 Aug 25 15:04  nvidia-resume.service -> /dev/null
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root9 Aug 25 15:04  nvidia-suspend.service -> /dev/null

Also, there were two directories containing links to the above 'masked'
services. Deleting those links restored suspend and shutdown
functionality.

drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Aug 26 18:14 systemd-hibernate.service.requires/
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Aug 26 18:08 systemd-suspend.service.requires/

Obviously a problem in removing all the nvidia settings.

[Bug 1835630] Re: Relax dependency on specific version of libnvidia-compute-NNN

2021-08-27 Thread BloodyIron
I'm on Ubuntu 20.04 and I just upgraded my nVidia driver to 470 which
immediately broke my nvtop. Something I use regularly to help balance my
resourcing in my workflow. How is it that it's TWO YEARS and this STILL
HAS NOT BEEN FIXED?

Get it together Canonical. This punishes users for upgrading their GPU
drivers. By the way 470 adds a whole bunch of Wayland support stuff, so
you'd think Canonical would be on-board with helping users have a good
experience in things like this.

Fix. It. Already.

[Bug 1920957] Re: Remove rust-proc-macro2 and rust-proc-quote

2021-08-27 Thread Steve Langasek
I have hesitated to act on this because the rust-proc-macro2 that's in
-proposed has passed its tests without issue in Debian, and the versions
of these packages in the release pocket aren't failing their tests in
the release, only in -proposed. So removing these packages would
regress us compared with Debian, without afaik anyone understanding why.
It's not clear to me that this is a bug in rust-proc-macro2 at all, as
opposed to being somewhere else in the rust stack.

So I'm going to mark this bug incomplete.

The user there says installing acpid resolved the issue for them. acpid
is already installed here (it's part of the ubuntu-desktop task).

[Bug 1939349] Re: frequent hangs with latest hirsute kernel (nvidia graphics)

2021-08-27 Thread Steve Langasek
I've also tried upgrading to a newer shim, in case something left around
in memory was causing problems. This also didn't help.

And quoting the kernel error here for text searchability:

[Bug 1940450] Re: XSS The data-template attribute of the tooltip and popover plugins lacks input sanitization and may allow attacker to execute arbitrary JavaScript.

2021-08-27 Thread Seth Arnold
The security team doesn't update cloud-archive packages, just Ubuntu
archive packages.

Is it really sufficient to modify just the requirements.txt file in the
git tree? I'm accustomed to seeing debian/changelog changes,
debian/patches/ changes, etc., but I've never done any of the git-based
packaging before.

Thanks

[Bug 1941927] [NEW] Update libpmix-dev on Ubuntu 21.10

2021-08-27 Thread Felix Abecassis
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 21.10 ships the following version of libpmix-dev:
$ apt-cache madison libpmix-dev
libpmix-dev | 4.0.0-4.1ubuntu1 | http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu
impish/universe amd64 Packages

The pmix.h header is in a non-standard path:
$ dpkg -L libpmix-dev | grep 'pmix\.h'
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/pmix2/include/pmix.h

But pmix.pc provided by libpmix-dev does not use those paths:
# pkg-config --cflags --libs pmix
-lpmix -lhwloc -levent -lz

This is fixed on Debian sid:
$ apt-cache madison libpmix-dev
libpmix-dev |4.1.0-3 | http://deb.debian.org/debian sid/main amd64 Packages

$ pkg-config --cflags --libs pmix
-I/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/pmix2/include -L/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/pmix2/lib
-lpmix -lhwloc -levent -lz

According to https://metadata.ftp-
master.debian.org/changelogs//main/p/pmix/pmix_4.1.0-3_changelog, looks
like it was fixed in 4.1.0~rc1-1:

pmix (4.1.0~rc1-1) experimental; urgency=medium

  * Fix prefix to ensure locations correct for pmix.pc

Booted from P408i.

I spent some time testing kdump. I had to disable IOMMU to get kexec/kdump to
work. Not sure why because neither the smartpqi driver nor our controllers care
about IOMMU settings.
So, this perhaps is a platform issue.

I used the following kdump settings:
 /etc/default/grub.d/kdump-tools.cfg
   GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="$GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT
crashkernel=512M-:640M"

vi /etc/default/kdump-tools
KDUMP_KEXEC_ARGS="--elf64-core-headers"
#KDUMP_CMDLINE=""
KDUMP_CMDLINE_APPEND="reset_devices systemd.unit=kdump-tools-dump.service
nr_cpus=1 irqpoll nousb ata_piix.prefer_ms_hyperv=0 acpi_no_memhotplug numa=off
lapic pci=nommconf pci=biosirq nosmep mem_encrypt=off"

Not sure what all is really required, but kdump works with all of the above
settings.

[Bug 1941922] [NEW] Ubuntu dual-boot install from USB stick fails

2021-08-27 Thread Donald
Public bug reported:

Issue has happened multiple times when I try to install the latest
version of Ubuntu from my USB stick. OS boots off the stick and I go
through the install wizard. My Thinkpad has 2 hard drives, with the
primary running Win11 beta. I installed Ubuntu on a partition on my
secondary internal hard drive. The installation to my machine fails at
the executing grub-install step. Oddly, that errors out but then I get a
message saying installation is complete and to reboot my computer.

[Bug 1921518] Re: OpenSSL "double free" error

2021-08-27 Thread Dimitri John Ledkov
@Vladimir

This is an improvement.

Previously we were getting: double free or corruption (out)
But now it is: Bus error
So some progress has been made.

Can you please install debug symbols, and generate a complete traceback
with debug symbols? or a core dump with debug symbols? (libcurl4-dbgsym
curl-dbgsym libssl1.1-dbgsym)

Also which libpka are you using? Were debug symbols compiled for it, and
can you share it? Is it just the latest build from github?

I have not previously seen Bus error when debugging this issue => on
arm64 it is usually non-aligned memory access coming from somewhere.

The scalapack cmake target also points to /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-

either needs to add this package to the list of dependencies or link
against /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/lapack/liblapack.so.3 provided by
liblapack3.

The riscv64 rebuild failed as before. However, 1.5.22-2ubuntu0.1's
riscv64 build shows the same error, so this is not a regression
introduced by this update.

It looks like this update is ready to be considered for migration.

[Bug 1938953] Re: virtualbox-dkms 6.1.16-dfsg-6~ubuntu1.20.04.2: virtualbox kernel module failed to build

2021-08-27 Thread mindaugasd
I just received update and virtualbox started working! Thanks if someone
did something.

But I don't understand how the update system works. Since nothing changed in
all the sources I know:
1. https://packages.ubuntu.com/focal/virtualbox shows the same stuff.
2. https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/virtualbox shows the same stuff.
3. Ubuntu Software still shows virtualbox 6.1.16 though now I have 6.1.22.

What determined that I received this update? Where to check what and when
updates I am supposed to receive?
It could be made easier to understand.

Attempted trusty backport, but failing at making it pass all the
existing unit tests. Asking for help. At the moment it seems to me that

[Bug 1941799] Re: Please merge openssh 1:8.4p1-6 from Debian unstable

2021-08-27 Thread William Wilson
This diff from Debian still includes the seccomp fixes pulled in for
glibc 2.33, as they are still relevant with glibc 2.34. These are in
upstream openssh version 8.5, so when Debian gets to 8.5 we can sync and
drop the diff.

[Bug 1887943] Re: [SRU] TLS is not enabled for memcached>=1.5.13

2021-08-27 Thread Bryce Harrington
The package is building fine on arm64 now, but there is a new FTBFS on
riscv64. I don't think the build results change is due to any change in
the package itself. The error in the build log mentions dns troubles,
so suspect the failures could be intermittent network trouble. I've
resubmitted the riscv64 build.

[Bug 1909005] Re: Ubuntu does not resume (wake up) from suspend

2021-08-27 Thread Ítalo de Melo Pereira
I would like to send more logs to help, but I can't. Because I will kill my
sdd, because I always have to force shutdown.
The last kernel I used and still has this problem was linux_5.11.0-27.29.

I really like mintOS (ubuntu/debian), but I have to get out of it,
because it doesn't serve me at the moment. Because debian or ubuntu
doesn't mind updating glibc, and trying manually will break the system
(https://github.com/Panchajanya1999/azure-clang/issues/1).

I will be migrating to Fedora. Until later.

[Bug 1937343] Re: FireFox 90 unable to install unsigned webextensions

2021-08-27 Thread CGar
I already have a mother to nanny me. It's disconcerting that Firefox
thinks it's okay to try and muscle into that role.

The whole point of Firefox for many is the freedom to customize and set
things how they like.

But who cares about that. All that matters now is the obsessive
overbearing coddling of the user and the removal of all the wonderful
sharp edges in the name of sEecOoOrItY.

[Bug 1941913] [NEW] Disables Wi-Fi just because

2021-08-27 Thread Roman Odaisky
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:
- Install an unrelated package, such as lxqt

Expected behavior:
- Nothing in particular happens until I choose to launch lxqt

Actual behavior:
- Wi-Fi is suddenly down
- nmcli conn up says “Error: Connection activation failed: No suitable device
found for this connection (device wlan0 not available because device is not
available).”
- ip link set wlan0 up says “RTNETLINK answers: Operation not possible due to
RF-kill”
- rfkill does not say anything because it does not happen to be installed

Apparently the following happened:
- lxqt has an (optional!) dependency on a widget that controls the network,
none of which were installed previously, and APT chose cmst (perhaps because
it’s the first alphabetically in the list of alternatives)
- as dependency of cmst, connman got installed, started itself, saw a Wi-Fi
device, and obviously, when a network management daemon starts on a system
already managed by a different daemon, the correct course of action is to
assert dominance by rfkilling the Wi-Fi device.

Thankfully, connman’s post-init script took ages to run and it was still
visible in the terminal where I ran APT, so I was able to associate the
connection loss with it and look up (on a different machine!) the
solution of `connmanctl enable wifi`.

Now imagine a user that is unable to make the connection in all senses
of the expression, how are they to solve the problem?

Suggested resolution:
- the fight to the death between network managers should happen in some
symbolic way without rfkilling spectators.
- packages that can rfkill interfaces should depend on the rfkill package so
the user can, upon seeing the RF-kill message, resurrect the interface manually.

** Affects: connman (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New
