[Bug 1946987] Re: Nvidia 340 Xorg driver is installed but not loaded

2021-10-14 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Maybe I was misled by XorgLog.txt because "FBDEV" is actually the
correct driver to try if /dev/dri/card0 is missing (as it is when the
Nvidia kernel driver is loaded). So this might just be the *absence* of
a valid config file telling Xorg to load the nvidia driver. Try using
the 'nvidia-xconfig' command to create one.

[Bug 1947185] Re: GNOME on Wayland does not initially display conky output

2021-10-14 Thread BertN45
I do not expect the error is in conky:

1. The error does not appear, when I login with xorg. The error did not appear
in 21.04.
2. The conky window is of course somewhat outside of the standard application
windows; It has no windows boundaries, the background of the window is
transparent and it is in the bottom right corner.
3. The following bypass in the login script worked;

#!/bin/bash
sleep 2
conky -d
sleep 1
killall conky
sleep 1
conky -d

The first time the windows is not displayed but conky is started, the
second time conky is started and the display is perfect. For conky there
is no difference between both starts, for wayland there is probably a
difference.

The sleep time has no influence, since I also tried the first one with 8
seconds and that did not help.

[Bug 1946149] Re: Bionic/linux-aws Boot failure downgrading from Bionic/linux-aws-5.4 on r5.metal

2021-10-14 Thread Ian May
As I was bisecting the commits, I was attempting to take advantage of
parallelism. While my test kernel was building I would deploy a clean
AWS r5.metal instance. I started seeing test kernels boot that I
wouldn't expect to boot. So I decided as a sanity test, I would deploy
an r5.metal instance, let it sit idle for 20 minutes and then install
the known problematic 4.15.0-1113-aws kernel. Sure enough it booted
fine. Tried the same thing again with letting it sit idle 20 mins and
it worked again. So this does appear to be a race condition. I think
this also explains some of the erratic test results I've seen while
looking at this bug. Fortunately the console output gave us some
definitive proof as to where the problem was occurring.

With that being said, it appears I have found the offending commits.

PCI/MSI: Enforce that MSI-X table entry is masked for update
PCI/MSI: Enforce MSI[X] entry updates to be visible

https://git.launchpad.net/~canonical-kernel/ubuntu/+source/linux-
aws/+git/bionic/commit/?id=27571f5ea1dd074924b41a455c50dc2278e8c2b7

https://git.launchpad.net/~canonical-kernel/ubuntu/+source/linux-
aws/+git/bionic/commit/?id=2478f358c2b35fea04e005447ce99ad8dc53fd5d

More specifically the hang is introduced by 'PCI/MSI: Enforce that MSI-X
table entry is masked for update', but it isn't a clean revert without
reverting the other commit. So for a quick test confirmation I reverted
both.

I have not had a chance to determine why these commits are causing the
problem, but with these reverted in a test build on top of
4.15.0-1113-aws, I can migrate from 5.4 to 4.15 as soon as the instance
is available. I've done at least 6 attempts now and all have passed and
doing the same steps without the reverts all have hung(unless I wait 20
mins).

[Bug 1947311] [NEW] Cloud init ignores growpart off on impish for raspberry pi

2021-10-14 Thread Noah
Public bug reported:

Hi,

On Raspberry Pi since Impish, the partition always grows even if I set
the following in user-data of cloud-init.

growpart:
  mode: off
  devices: ['/']

I have tested this on 21.04, and it works, but is broken on 21.10.
(partition always grows)

I've also tested this in KVM on amd64, and it works (partition does NOT
grow).

This is a problem for me because I am using runcmd in cloud init to
migrate my drive to LVM/LUKS, and the partitioning step fails because
the drive is already full.

Cheers,
Noah

[Bug 1947306] [NEW] Touch Pad Cursor Speed Degreases Dramatically at Desired Resolution

2021-10-14 Thread Lonnie Lee Best
Public bug reported:

Although I'm able set resolution to 1920x1080, upon doing so, the
touchpad on my Logitech K400 Wireless keyboard/touchpad becomes so slow
and laggy, that I cannot enjoy the better looking resolution.

I've tried adjusting the touchpad speed to its max setting in GNOME3's
settings panel, but this has an almost unnoticeable influence.

When I set resolution to 1440x900, the same touchpad is very fast and
responsive.

The bug is that nothing in the touchpad settings addresses this issue: I
either have to endure less than optimal resolution, or endure less than
optimal touchpad sensitivity.

I'm currently installing this:
sudo apt install kde-plasma-desktop

I'll report back soon as to notify whether or not this allows me to have
decent touchpad sensitivity at a 1920x1080 resolution.

Hi Jakob,

thank you to report this issue.
Would you please help to attach the log?
If apport doesn't work on your side then would you please help to attach
"journalctl -b -1" in next boot up cycle after force power off the system?

BTW, the oem-5.10 will be transited to 5.11-hwe (or 5.13/5.14 oem)
kernel soon.

[Bug 1946969] Re: ibus-x11 does not start automatically

2021-10-14 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
I just found that this problem is not present in Debian testing, even if
they have the same version of both mutter and ibus. Something seems to
make Xwayland start at login, and hence ibus-x11 is also running.

That speaks against using im-config to work around it, since im-config
is used by both Debian and Ubuntu.

I think we need to ask the Ubuntu desktop folks for advice.

[Bug 1912946] Re: [ThinkPad E14 Gen2] Closing the lid does not trigger system suspend - fn keys not working

2021-10-14 Thread elguavas
just confirming that that _both_ issues still occur with the latest
kernel updates on 21.04 as of today (2021-10-15).

would be really nice not to have to use either of the two hacks
described above to get this working.

i also added the fn key problem to the bug title to aid in searching.

[Bug 1947149] Re: dock auto-hide off but hidden on login

2021-10-14 Thread Daniel van Vugt
That's the login animation, not related to the auto-hide setting. It's
there by design to avoid at least two bugs:

  * Dock overlaps top bar during login;
  * Dock makes the login animation stutter heavily.

So on login, this isn't a bug. For unlocking the screen, this is a bug.
And actually a recent fix to the desktop-icons-ng extension has given me
some inspiration for how to fix the unlock problem.

[Bug 1945590] Re: Thinkpad E14 Gen2: Kernel panic with trackpad and trackpoint enabled

2021-10-14 Thread elguavas
oh, i should mention i tried running the 21.10 installer on the same
machine and (as expected) since no-one would know to disable their
trackpad before trying to install, this bug effectively makes 21.10
uninstallable on this hardware, so for installation purposes i'd call
the bug critical.

hi all, exactly the same issue here. this is on a Thinkpad E15 Gen 2
(AMD) which is the same hardware as the E14 in the bug title (with just
a larger screen).

i also get alternately the "stack corruption" in the elantech driver
message or freezing on the Lenovo logo, as mentioned above. this is
since upgrading to 21.10.

the machine in question was booting fine on 21.04 with the latest kernel
updates.

I'm partially observing the issue here:
 - selecting a full URL (e.g. `http://example.org`) in a text editor such as
gedit, dragging it to the firefox window and dropping it there opens the URL as
expected
 - however dragging a hyperlink as rendered by a rich text widget or webview
(for example another browser application) and dropping it on the firefox window
doesn't open the corresponding URL

This latter use case doesn't appear to be working with firefox installed as a
deb package either, though.
This requires more investigation, but at a first glance it doesn't appear to be
a snap-specific problem. Maybe a wayland-specific problem?

[Bug 1946578] Re: Update for CVE-2021-41133

2021-10-14 Thread Andrew Hayzen
So hirsute and impish have libseccomp 2.5.1, but focal and bionic have
2.4.3 in the security pocket and 2.5.1 in the updates pocket. I'm not
sure if there is procedure here to try and pull 2.5.1 of focal and
bionic into the security pocket with flatpak - if that is needed to
solve the security issue.

Focal and bionic will need also rebasing of the patches, I might take a
look at this over the weekend if no one else does.

[Bug 1934393] Re: systemd-logind network access is blocked, and breaks remote authentication configurations

2021-10-14 Thread Dan Streetman
Ok let's go with option #1 then, just open up systemd-logind to network
access directly by editing the service file.

@mbiebl, do you want to patch this in Debian too, should I open a merge
request in salsa? Obviously if Debian is patched first, that's ideal.
Assuming you're ok with directly patching systemd-logind to open network
access, instead of putting a drop-in file in the nis package.

[Bug 1947257] [NEW] Partial profile loss on upgrade from 21.04 to 21.10

2021-10-14 Thread Jared Norris
Public bug reported:

In the upgrade from 21.04 to 21.10 I noticed it had updated firefox.
When restarting some of my profile was kept (themes, addons, etc) but
I've noticed my primary window of 50+ tabs was lost. It opened 3 other
windows correctly.

I tried to find it via "recently closed tabs/windows" but it's not
showing up. I have also confirmed there are no duplicate profiles.

Silly me assumed it was done correctly and when the upgrade process
offered to remove old packages I did so I can't seem to retrieve the old
profile.

  https://security-tracker.debian.org/tracker/CVE-2021-41133
-

  [Impact]
  Versions in Ubuntu right now:
  Impish: 1.10.2-3
  Hirsute: 1.10.2-1ubuntu1
  Focal: 1.6.5-0ubuntu0.3
  Bionic: 1.0.9-0ubuntu0.3

  Affected versions:
- 1.11.x, 1.10.x <= 1.10.3, all <= 1.8.2
+ 1.11.x, 1.10.x <= 1.10.3, all <= 1.8.2

  Patched versions:
- 1.10.5, 1.12.1, also expected in 1.8.2
-
+ 1.10.5, 1.12.1, also expected in 1.8.2

  [Test Case]
  Unknown
-

  [Regression Potential]
Flatpak has a test suite, which is run on build across all relevant
architectures and passes.

There is also a manual test plan
  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Process/Merges/TestPlan/flatpak .

  Flatpak has autopkgtests enabled
  http://autopkgtest.ubuntu.com/packages/f/flatpak .

Regression potential is low, and upstream is very responsive to any
  issues raised.

-
  [Patches]
There were 8 initial patches, then some regressions have been found, one has
been patched, but a second has a pending pull request (see the github advisory
for links). As noted in the debian bug as well there might be further changes
to bubblewrap, so guess it makes sense to wait until this has settled.
-

  [Other Information]
An anonymous reporter discovered that Flatpak apps with direct access to
AF_UNIX sockets such as those used by Wayland, Pipewire or pipewire-pulse can
trick portals and other host-OS services into treating the Flatpak app as
though it was an ordinary, non-sandboxed host-OS process, by manipulating the
VFS using recent mount-related syscalls that are not blocked by Flatpak's
denylist seccomp filter, in order to substitute a crafted /.flatpak-info or
make that file disappear entirely.
  Impact

Flatpak apps that act as clients for AF_UNIX sockets such as those used
by Wayland, Pipewire or pipewire-pulse can escalate the privileges that
the corresponding services will believe the Flatpak app has.

Mitigation: Note that protocols that operate entirely over the D-Bus
session bus (user bus), system bus or accessibility bus are not affected
by this. This is due to the use of a proxy process xdg-dbus-proxy, whose
VFS cannot be manipulated by the Flatpak app, when interacting with
  these buses.

[Bug 1947210] [NEW] Firefox Snap can't copy&paste or drag&drop in Wayland

2021-10-14 Thread Tommy Trussell
Public bug reported:

I just upgraded to 21.10 Impish which supplies Firefox 93.0-1 via snap.
I could not copy and paste to and from the browser. I logged out of
Wayland and into Xorg and copy & paste works.

Already reported at https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1729901
so it's a known issue.

I wanted to report it here so it gets into the Impish release notes or
wherever along with the workaround.

[Bug 1947206] [NEW] Updates to ib_peer_memory requested by Nvidia

2021-10-14 Thread dann frazier
Public bug reported:

[Impact]
Nvidia notified me via private email that they'd discovered some issues with
the ib_peer_memory patch we are carrying in hirsute/impish and sent me a patch
intended to resolve them. My knowledge of these changes is limited to what is
mentioned in the commit message:

- Allow clients to opt out of unmap during invalidation
- Fix some bugs in the sequencing of mlx5 MRs
- Enable ATS for peer memory

[Test Case]
ib_write_bw from the perftest package, rebuilt with CUDA support, can be used
as a smoke test of this feature. I'll attach a sample test script here. I've
verified this test passes with the kernels in the archive, and continues to
pass with the provided patch applied.

[Fix]
Nvidia has emailed me fixes for both trees. They are not currently available in
a public tree elsewhere, though I'm told at some point they should end up in a
branch here:
  https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/leon/linux-rdma.git/

[What could go wrong]
The only known use case for ib_peer_memory are Nvidia GPU users making use of
the GPU PeerDirect feature where GPUs can share memory with one another over an
Infiniband network. Bugs here could cause problems (hangs, crashes, corruption)
with such workloads.

[Bug 1924800] Re: Popup menu flickers on Firefox and Sway combo

2021-10-14 Thread Steve Langasek
This package was incorrectly auto-accepted into impish-proposed by a
script. I have subsequently removed it from impish-proposed; since the
package has now been accepted and then removed, in order for this SRU
process to progress, an SRU template will need to be provided and then
someone will need to ping a member of the ~ubuntu-sru team to recover
the package from deletion.

[Bug 1946499] Re: installation of deb-packages with gdebi-gtk shows "dpkg: error: unable to read filedescriptor flags for : Bad file descriptor" in gdebi t

2021-10-14 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
I just uploaded Dani's gdebi fix to Debian unstable. Tested it in a PPA
first:

https://launchpad.net/~gunnarhj/+archive/ubuntu/gdebi/+packages

With that, and for impish+1, we will be able to sync the source from
Debian for both gdebi and vte2.91.

The gdebi change must of course be SRUed to impish. As regards the now
obsolete VTE patch, and assuming that it doesn't hurt, SRUing vte2.91 is
probably not needed.

** Also affects: gdebi (Ubuntu Impish)
   Importance: High
   Status: Fix Committed

** Also affects: vte2.91 (Ubuntu Impish)
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: Confirmed

** No longer affects: vte2.91 (Ubuntu Impish)

[Bug 1940131] Re: sudo ua attach is not working

2021-10-14 Thread Steve Langasek
** Description changed:

  [Impact]
  This bug impacts users which:
- - Do not have the '/usr/bin/cloud-id' command in their system,
+ - Do not have the '/usr/bin/cloud-id' command in their system,
  - Do have the '/var/lib/cloud/data/result.json' file in their system, and
- - Have a non-standart (by cloud-init definitions) content in the
'/var/lib/cloud/data/result.json' file.
+ - Have a non-standard (by cloud-init definitions) content in the
'/var/lib/cloud/data/result.json' file.

This is an unusual situation, given that the presence of the
'result.json' file with the absence of the 'cloud-id' command is
observed on official Trusty images, but from Xenial onwards 'cloud-id'
should be there. Even in the case where the command is not there, the
file generated by cloud-init will have the required information.

Since we are doing the SRU process for Xenial onwards, the solution for those
problems is to rely only on cloud-id when trying to determine the cloud type,
and assuming not on cloud when the command is not present or if it fails.

https://github.com/canonical/ubuntu-advantage-client/commit/f6fbcee792cf42cc67e3ced02815b7d552dee19f

  [Test Case]
  To reproduce:
With ubuntu-advantage-tools 27.2 installed, in an Ubuntu machine:
- - Make sure cloud-id is not there:
- $ sudo mv /usr/bin/cloud-id /usr/bin/cloud-id.old
- - Make sure to have the result.json file with non-standart (empty, for
instance) content:
- $ sudo mv /var/lib/cloud/data/result.json
/var/lib/cloud/data/result.json.old (if the file exists)
- $ sudo touch /var/lib/cloud/data/result.json
+ - Make sure cloud-id is not there:
+   $ sudo mv /usr/bin/cloud-id /usr/bin/cloud-id.old
+ - Make sure to have the result.json file with non-standard (empty, for
instance) content:
+   $ sudo mv /var/lib/cloud/data/result.json
/var/lib/cloud/data/result.json.old (if the file exists)
+   $ sudo touch /var/lib/cloud/data/result.json
  - Try to attach a token using "ua attach"
  - Verify that it fails

  To verify the fix:
Repeat the above process using ubuntu-advantage tools 27.3, and verify that
the attach operation succeeds.
-

  [Regression Potential]
When running on a non-cloud system, this fix brings no impact, as we expect
cloud-id to be absent and we are not running on cloud.

When running on a specific cloud, this fix brings the scenario where we
should detect the cloud and are unable to, due to problems with cloud-
init. This is minor though, given that if cloud-init didn't run
properly, the instance has more problems than this one. Besides that,
considering no-cloud when not in aws/azure/gcp has no impact on UA at
all, and those three providers have images with cloud-id working
  properly.

No official Ubuntu image should be affected by this change.

-
  [Discussion]
As stated above, this is an unusual situation, which led to an improvement to
the cloud detection in UA.
-

bug. This means that out of the box installs of Ubuntu 21.10 with ZFS
essentially don't work at present because of this - someone might want

[Bug 1273764] Re: Grub ignores TIMEOUT options on /etc/default/grub

2021-10-14 Thread Wyllys Ingersoll
Im having the opposite sort of problem. On Ubuntu 20.04 with grub2 2.04
- I want the menu to display but only for GRUB_TIMEOUT seconds. No
matter what settings I use, it always displays indefinitely and never
counts down.

If I set GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE="countdown", it will do the countdown and
never shows the menu as expected, but we want the menu AND the menu
timeout countdown.

Setting GRUB_RECORDFAIL_TIMEOUT makes no difference.

My system does boot from an LVM RAID boot partition, but I have several
other identical systems configured exactly the same way that do not have
this problem. It seems rather random.

Could you please add SRU information to this bug report? Once that is
done I'll be happy to sponsor it!

[Bug 1943564] Re: [SRU] Backport xrt 202020.2.8.743-0ubuntu1 to focal

2021-10-14 Thread Tony McDowell
I verified this. I had a little bit of trouble getting focal-proposed
working but once I did I was able to update xrt-embedded and I saw
everything work properly from there. I saw the Xilinx platform ICD in
the proper location and clinfo began showing the platform IDs properly.

[Bug 1913656] Re: Fix for Ghostscript 9.50 upstream bug needs to be back-ported

2021-10-14 Thread William Wilson
** Tags added: verification-needed verification-needed-focal

** Description changed:

- Ghostscript 9.50 exhibits
- https://bugs.ghostscript.com/show_bug.cgi?id=701894 (fix the '--' and co
- options) which causes (eg) ocrfeeder to fail to load PDF files: an input
- file specified using the "... -- filename ..." command line syntax has
- no read permission in the GS interpreter.
+ [Impact]
+ * The command line syntax `gs [options] -- ` fails
+to load in the input file with a "permission denied" error.
+ * Per the ghostscript documentation, the `--` syntax is used as follows:
+ "-- filename arg1 ...
+Takes the next argument as a file name as usual,
+but takes all remaining arguments (even if they
+have the syntactic form of switches) and defines
+the name ARGUMENTS in userdict (not systemdict)
+as an array of those strings, before running the
+file. When Ghostscript finishes executing the file,
+it exits back to the shell."
+
+ [Test Case]
+ -- to be performed in a desktop environment --
+ * Obtain a valid input file for ghostscript. The Source package
+contains an `examples/` directory with plenty to choose from.
+ * `gs -- `
+ * Observe that the test failed with a "permission denied" error.
+ * Install the version of ghostscript from focal-proposed.
+ * `gs -- `
+ * Observe that the command succeeds and a ghostscript window.
+appears with the output of the `gs` command.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ * Since this patch affects command line processing, it is possible
+that other arguments or command line syntaxes could be affected.
+
+ [Original Description]
+ Ghostscript 9.50 exhibits https://bugs.ghostscript.com/show_bug.cgi?id=701894
(fix the '--' and co options) which causes (eg) ocrfeeder to fail to load PDF
files: an input file specified using the "... -- filename ..." command line
syntax has no read permission in the GS interpreter.

  This commit fixes it:

http://git.ghostscript.com/?p=ghostpdl.git;a=commit;h=24ec06a27df63297796a379c95ee5d4b39040410

  GS 9.52 includes the commit.

Either apply the fix from the linked commit in the Focal-Updates
version, or upgrade it to 9.52.

[Bug 1916250] Re: gir1.2-signon-2.0 needs to declare replace on older releases (Groovy2Hirsute)

2021-10-14 Thread Brian Murray
I've sponsored this for impish and hirsute. The bug could use an SRU
template though.
