[Bug 1971973] Re: [MIR] gnome-text-editor
I’ll review the rest on the MIR, but to not add more delay, I think we should discuss this: > "- The package does not run an autopkgtest because desktop softwares aren't easy to test in autopkgtest. THe situation isn't a regression compared to gedit which we want ro replace. While it would be nice to get some sort of autopkgtest in place we don't think that should be a blocker to replace gedit." I see more and more packages telling this "It’s already not tested, or the rest of the stack is not tested, so let’s keep this status quo and not improve it". I kind of disagree with this, and I think the MIR process is the right moment to get things right, or at least, in a better state. Otherwise, things will never improve. So my suggestion, is really to follow the MIR guidelines, stating that either autopkgtests are provided, or that, if not feasable (which I agree testing GUI is hard on our infra and it doesn’t seem unfortunately there is assigned capacity to get that situation better), "the subscribed team must provide a written test plan in a comment to the MIR bug, and commit to running that test either at each upload of the package or at least once each release cycle. " I think this latter approach is a mitigation plan, (which won’t protect you though from reverse dependencies to break you, contrary to autopkgtests). [Bug 1972944] [NEW] server becomes desktop unintentionally
Public bug reported: Ubuntu Release: 20.04 package version: 0.7.9-1ubuntu2 What happened: when libnotify4 is installed by apt, desktop environment is also installed. Explanation: I think it is fair to say that, a user of Ubuntu server don't want unintentional installation of desktop environment. The problem is discussed by others: https://github.com/ros-perception/perception_pcl/issues/355 https://gitlab.kitware.com/vtk/vtk/-/issues/18489#note_1156770 Under my research, the central reason is that, gnome-shell has been added to libnotify4's Recommended dependency in focal (Ubuntu20.04). gnome-shell should not be Recommended dependency for a pure library, causing unintentional installation. Actually, gnome-shell in libnotify4's dependency has dropped from Recommended to Suggested in jammy (Ubuntu22.04). This change should be treated as error fixing and be updated to 20.04 as well. current workaround: manually install the problematic libnotify4 in early setting >>sudo apt install libnotify4 --no-install-recommends ** Affects: libnotify (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1972944 Title: server becomes desktop unintentionally To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libnotify/+bug/1972944/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1972914] Re: frequent 15-sec guest freeze with ubuntu 22.04 host and guest
Increasing video memory appears to have fixed my problem. My virtual screen size is 1920x1080 and in virt-manager's Video panel / XML tab, vgamem was set to the default value of 16384. After increasing it to 65536, I'm no longer seeing the freeze (though with only a few minutes of testing, so far). I don't know enough about this software to know if this means there is no flaw in QXL. If it does, then this bug report can be closed, although the freeze is a confusing failure mode. It would be nice if the overall user experience could be improved somehow. [Bug 1968805] Re: Hibernation fails when an additional swapfile is added due to priority mismatch
The fix has now been merged upstream with: commit a2303d269610a6e7415c5045766da605eaa7e30f From: Matthew Ruffell Date: Wed, 20 Apr 2022 15:59:25 +1200 Subject: Swapon with maximum priority before hibernation Link: https://github.com/aws/amazon-ec2-hibinit-agent/commit/a2303d269610a6e7415c5045766da605eaa7e30f ** Description changed: [Impact] It is not uncommon for users to add a swapfile to their AWS instance, in case they run short of memory. For users that optionally enable Hibernation support, the swapfile generated by ec2-hibinit-agent, /swap- hibinit, needs to always be the highest priority when it comes to suspend the system, since ec2-hibinit-agent sets up /swap-hibinit to be the correct way to suspend and resume via the resume=UUID= and resume_offeset= kernel command line parameters. ec2-hibinit-agent keeps /swap-hibinit swapoff during normal instance use, and right before Hibernation occurs, /etc/acpi/actions/sleep.sh swapon /swap-hibinit, and calls systemctl hibernate: do_hibernate() { if [ -d /run/systemd/system ]; then systemctl hibernate case "$2" in SBTN) swapon /swap-hibinit && do_hibernate Something changed between 18.04 and 20.04, such that new swapfiles are added with a lower priority than the previous swapfile when they are swapon: On Focal and later, we see behaviour like if we simply swapon /swap-hibinit generated by ec2-hibinit-agent, we see it is -2: $ sudo swapon /swap-hibinit $ swapon --show NAME TYPE SIZE USED PRIO /swap-hibinit file 3.9G 0B -2 Turning it off: $ sudo swapoff /swap-hibinit $ swapon --show NAME TYPE SIZE USED PRIO Lets add /swapfile in: $ sudo swapon /swapfile $ swapon --show NAME TYPE SIZE USED PRIO /swapfile file 4G 0B -2 Now we enable /swap-hibinit again, and see it is -3: $ sudo swapon /swap-hibinit $ swapon --show NAME TYPE SIZE USED PRIO /swapfile file 4G 0B -2 /swap-hibinit file 3.9G 0B -3 Lets add in another swapfile, /swapfile-second, and we see -2, -3, -4: $ sudo swapon /swapfile-second $ swapon --show NAME TYPE SIZE USED PRIO /swapfilefile 4G 0B -2 /swap-hibinitfile 3.9G 0B -3 /swapfile-second file 4G 0B -4 What happens is that if we have a swapfile, say, /swapfile at default priority -2, when we go to hibernate, the swapon in /etc/acpi/actions/sleep.sh will set the priority of /swap-hibinit to -3. systemd / the kernel will then select the highest priority swapfile to hibernate to, in this case /swapfile, which is NOT setup for resume= or resume_offset= on the kernel command line, and hibernation will fail. Apr 11 21:08:15 ip-172-31-84-225 kernel: [ 240.990073] Adding 4095996k swap on /swap-hibinit. Priority:-3 extents:6 across:4644860k SSFS This leaves the instance in the "Stopping" state on the EC2 console until it hits the 20 minute timeout, at which point it is force stopped. The fix is to set the priority when we swapon /swap-hibinit to something higher than any other swapfile, to ensure we hibernate to /swap-hibinit. [Testcase] From the EC2 console, select "Launch Instance". Create a: - t2.medium - Ubuntu 20.04, 21.04 or 22.04 - 20gb storage space, advanced > enable encryption > yes. - Advanced settings > Stop State (Hibernation) Support > Enabled On boot wait for ec2-hibinit-agent to complete hibinit-agent.service, and see that /swap-hibinit is created, and swapoff. $ ll /swap-hibinit Add a swapfile, and switch it on: $ sudo fallocate -l 4G /swapfile $ sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/swapfile bs=1024 count=4194304 $ sudo chmod 600 /swapfile $ sudo mkswap /swapfile $ sudo swapon /swapfile $ echo "/swapfile swap swap defaults 0 0" | sudo tee -a /etc/fstab $ swapon --show NAME TYPE SIZE USED PRIO /swapfile file 4G 0B -2 Go back to EC2 console, "Instance State" > "Hibernate". You will see this in journalctl: Mar 15 11:41:54 ip-172-31-27-108 kernel: [ 520.121761] Adding 16095656k swap on /swap-hibinit. EC2 console will report "Stopping" for 20 minutes until it times out and is force stopped. If you enable the following ppa and install the test ec2-hibinit-agent package: https://launchpad.net/~mruffell/+archive/ubuntu/sf331069-test Hibernation should succeed within a minute or two. [Where problems could occur] This change will only affect users of instances where Hibernation has been explicitly enabled, either from the EC2 instance launch advanced settings, or via the "--hibernation-options Configured=true" parameter to the "aws ec2" command. [Bug 1971576] Re: SATA device hot plug regression on AMD EPYC (Asus) server
Hello Zhanglei, Thanks for the update. I am a little surprised that this kernel failed. There are 2 SATA related changes in kernel -100 which I suspected were the root cause. However, the kernel that I provided (version 3000) did NOT contain those patches, so I expected it to work. The patches that I suspected were the cause are: sata_fsl: fix warning in remove_proc_entry when rmmod sata_fsl sata_fsl: fix UAF in sata_fsl_port_stop when rmmod sata_fsl In any case, maybe my assumption was incorrect. We can continue to bisect anyway. I am unable to provide all the kernels in one shot because the next kernel that we should test depends on the results of the test before it. If I give them all in one shot, I would have to give you 270 kernels to test instead of 9. We have already done the first bisect. Now we have 125 patches (instead of 270) so should be another 7 tests at most. The next kernel is available here: https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kmously/kernel-kmously-440f762-4e4H/ This is version 3002. Please, when the engineer tests this kernel, make sure to type "uname -r" to confirm that it is version 3002. That way we can be 100% sure we are testing the right kernel. [Bug 1971415] Re: Remote desktop is automatically enabled after login
** Description changed: - If I disable sharing/remote desktop in GNOME Control Center, then log - out and back in, it is automatically enabled again. I report this as a - security vulnerability because remote desktop is enabled without the - user's knowledge. + Details: + Turning off RDP Remote Desktop Sharing with gnome-control-center would only turn off RDP sharing for the current session. Upon logging back in, RDP Sharing would be enabled again without any additional user interaction or notification. + + Other Info: + As mentioned in the comments at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-control-center/-/issues/1825 + this issue could have been avoided if Ubuntu's gnome-remote-desktop didn't keep the systemd user service always running. I do intend to fix that issue also but it is a more complicated fix. I think it will require a maintainer script to remove the automatic conffiles added by dh. I will do the gnome-remote-desktop bugfix as a normal non-security SRU. + + Original Bug Report: + If I disable sharing/remote desktop in GNOME Control Center, then log out and back in, it is automatically enabled again. Software versions: - Ubuntu 22.04 - gnome-remote-desktop 42.0-4ubuntu1 - gnome-control-center 1:41.4-1ubuntu13 Steps to reproduce: 1. Start with Remote Desktop enabled. Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Libera.chat. To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1972915/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package. [Bug 1972914] [NEW] frequent 15-sec guest freeze with ubuntu 22.04 host and guest
Public bug reported: I'm running a new installation of Ubuntu 22.04 Desktop on a Thinkpad T450s (core i5-5200, 2 cores / 4 vCPUs, 12 GB memory). Using the virt- manager GUI, I performed what I believe is a simple, plain-vanilla installation of an Ubuntu 22.04 guest running under qemu/kvm with 2 vCPUs and 4 GB memory. I'm seeing very frequent, 15-second freezes of the guest. When it happens, the guest is completely unresponsive. After about 15 seconds, it works normally again, until the next freeze. The duration of the freeze appears to be the same every time. The guest isn't doing much - just open the calculator app and click number buttons. The freeze doesn't happen if I don't interact with the guest (just leave the system monitor running in the guest, so I can see that it's not frozen). I observe the freeze when I have 2 of the 4 vCPUs dedicated to the guest. I do NOT observe it when I have only one vCPU dedicated to the guest. Both the host and guest are using only a small fraction of the memory available to them. When the problem happens, the host indicates that CPU usage is very low across all vCPUs. The host appears to be operating normally when the guest is frozen. I see the following pair of lines in the guest syslog every time the freeze occurs (and only when the freeze occurs): May 10 13:48:40 qemu-jammy kernel: [ 144.259799] qxl :00:01.0: object_init failed for (8298496, 0x0001) May 10 13:48:40 qemu-jammy kernel: [ 144.259819] [drm:qxl_alloc_bo_reserved [qxl]] *ERROR* failed to allocate VRAM BO I don't see anything in the host syslog that correlates with the freeze. If I choose "Virtio" in the Video drop-down in the virt-manager GUI, with "3D acceleration" UNchecked, the guest works fine, and the freeze never happens. Unfortunately, that loses fractional scaling, which is important to me. If I check "3D acceleration," the guest won't boot. ** Affects: xserver-xorg-video-qxl (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1972914 Title: frequent 15-sec guest freeze with ubuntu 22.04 host and guest To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-qxl/+bug/1972914/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1959345] Re: vulkaninfo reports error
All the same, perhaps vulkaninfo should issue a warning about vestigial config if it can find a perfectly usable icd somewhere else! Presumably it looks for the one supplied by Ubuntu. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1959345 Title: vulkaninfo reports error To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mesa/+bug/1959345/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
