[Bug 1922342] Re: Impish live session takes ages to boot on BIOS systems
-- reply to @Thomas #112 (start paste) So if we want to propose a workaround for the current layout, it would be a good base if you could confirm that j3400 boots after the plain procedure with no other experiments inbetween: # Patch the ISO already as image on hard disk ISO=ubuntu-22.04-desktop-amd64.iso dd if=/dev/zero bs=1 count=16 of="$ISO" conv=notrunc seek=462 # Put it onto the USB stick as you usually do. E.g. sudo dd bs=4M oflag=sync status=progress of=/dev/sdb if="$ISO" Then you would check if it boots twice on the j3400. If the second boot succeeds and shows a writable big partition as last one, then we could be sure that this procedure is a valid workaround. A run of sudo xorriso -indev stdio:/dev/sdb -report_system_area plain would (hopefully) confirm that there is no second MBR partition with boot flag. Of course it would be enough if you can confirm that you did this already during the experiments, with no intermediate manipulations. [Bug 1974267] [NEW] XSET dpms force suspend causes kernel panic
Public bug reported: Device Specs are a HP Prodesk 600 G4 DM. 1 stick DDR4 2666mhz 16gb and I7-8600T CPU. I am running an application that uses a touch screen that turns off the monitor when not used. It uses the DPMS time out commands on the monitor. I have manually triggered the crash using ssh into the computer. Turning off the monitor manually does not cause it. I have ran the monitor from usbc combined as well as power and hdmi only to verify that it is not an issue with the touch screen drivers. Using tail -f on /var/log/Xorg.0.log, Xorg.1.log and on syslogd. I can see xserver issue the command and then starts spamming the mode line information from the monitor when the monitor disconnects. Within a second the syslog reports "snd_hda_codec_hdmi hdaudioC0D2: HDMI: pin nid 7 not registered" and then within 5 seconds the computer reboots.I have tried collecting a kdump, but when enabled, the computer is permanently frozen and the power button has to be held down to reboot the machine. When testing the Kdump with the ssh trigger crash, the crash log is generated properly. This bug may be similar to https://patchwork.kernel.org/project/alsa- devel/patch/20190716144111.1470-1-ti...@suse.de/ I cannot confirm however on the behavior. It could be that the xserver package is trying to use the something when the monitor is in suspend or off. No crash occurs when the monitor is disconnected or when the monitor shutsdown. Only when the monitor enters a DPMS state does the kernel panic. I am attaching 4 ssh terminals from when I induced a crash. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Attachment added: "Terminal outputs from crash" https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1974267/+attachment/5591445/+files/Ubuntu%20Crash%20Terminal%20outputs.rar -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1974267 Title: XSET dpms force suspend causes kernel panic To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1974267/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1974262] [NEW] Ubuntu 20.04 Xen Dom0 Cannot Boot
Public bug reported: I have an Ubuntu 20.04 Server running Xen as a Dom0. It's worked fun, but I recently rebooted and the error below appeared (XEN) ELF: not an ELF binary (XEN) (XEN) (XEN) Panic on CPU 0: (XEN) Could not set up DOM0 guest OS (XEN) (XEN) (XEN) Reboot in 5 seconds... The LTS release is the same as before, no distribution upgrade. Just a new kernel was installed causing the failure. I tried the extract- vmlinux but I think I might be missing some decompression software as it did not work. In the end I uninstalled the newer kernels, leaving my last good kernel. This forced Xen to boot into that (vmlinuz-5.11.0-43-generic) which works perfectly. It's not great having to run an old version and being forced to run extract-vmlinux (If it worked, which it does not) each time I upgrade the kernel is pretty bad. Since it impacts the Dom0 it's pretty significant. [Bug 1974261] [NEW] After updating to Ubuntu 22.04 I could not boot.
Public bug reported: Booting the laptop resulted in the splash screen. Then some text flashed very quickly but I couldn't read it. Then, the screen went black. The back light was on. I went to the TTY recovery mode and tried to fix the issue. I tried to fix the issue by deleting my nvidia drivers. `apt remove --purge nvidia-*` Still would not boot. I ended up fixing the issue by going into recovery mode and changing the following line of `/etc/default/grub`: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_backlight=vendor acpi_osi=linux" was changed to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="" I forgot to update the grub. [Bug 1974254] [NEW] Probles with Clutter
Public bug reported: Running Xubuntu 20.04.4 I've started seeing all sorts of programs failing in the last week apparently due to clutter. Start geeqie with the option: --disable-clutter When I try to run cheese I get: (cheese:1207183): Clutter-CRITICAL **: 17:54:24.432: Unable to initialize Clutter: Unable to initialize the Clutter backend: no available drivers found. ** (cheese:1207183): ERROR **: 17:54:24.432: cheese-application.vala:89: Unable to initialize libcheese-gtk Trace/BPT trap(coredump) In researching the problem I ran across this article: https://blogs.gnome.org/clutter/ Now, I have no idea what clutter is/does, but it seems to now be retired. Was the package removal back-ported to earlier releases of Ubuntu? The gir1.2-gtkclutter-1.0, gir1-clutter-1.0 and gstreamer1.0-clutter-3.0 packages are still installed. Any guidelines here? [Bug 1973839] Re: 5.15.0-30-generic : unchecked MSR access error: WRMSR to 0x48 (tried to write 0x0000000000000004)
So after reading and experimenting a bit more, what the upstream change is doing is setting the defaults to spec_store_bypass_disable=prctl spectre_v2_user=prctl instead of "seccomp". This basically means that instead of all seccomp() users setting these flags, it is up to userspace to set manually via prctl(). The linked upstream change goes into all the reasons why this is the right thing to do. From the cpuid on the output of the failing cloud provider we see SSBD: speculative store bypass disable = true suggesting that this has been explicitly disabled? It's unclear to me if that's set by the cloud provider in qemu? Not sure if I can tell from a guest without backend access? OpenDev is a canary for this sort of thing as we are extremely heterogeneous with clouds, we have resources donated by about 7-8 different cloud providers, each with multiple regions (across x86_64 & arm64) that we use simultaneously for CI work (we use whatever people will donate). I've tested and booting with spec_store_bypass_disable=prctl stops the traces in the affected cloud, so we'll probably implement this. However, I think there's probably enough here to think about backporting this commit for maximum compatibility of the generic images. It seems like the system works well enough (which is how it passed all our initial CI) but the traces spewing will quickly lead to disks filling up with bloated log files (how we found it after running in production). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1973839 Title: 5.15.0-30-generic : unchecked MSR access error: WRMSR to 0x48 (tried to write 0x0004) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1973839/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

For ease of review, relevant commits and tags have been pushed to the following repository: https://code.launchpad.net/~waveform/ubuntu/+source/sbuild/+git/sbuild Specifically: * logical/0.81.2ubuntu6 represents our split-out delta on top of old/debian (0.81.2) * logical/0.83.1ubuntu1 represents our rebased delta on top of new/debian (0.83.1) * merge/0.83.1ubuntu1 just adds changelog and maintainer changes on top of logical/0.83.1ubuntu1 Hence, the following command may produce output useful to the purposes of review: git range-diff old/debian..logical/0.81.2ubuntu6 new/debian..logical/0.83.1ubuntu1 Test packages are built in: https://launchpad.net/~waveform/+archive/ubuntu/sbuild/+packages ** Patch added: "1-1974177.debdiff" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sbuild/+bug/1974177/+attachment/5591421/+files/1-1974177.debdiff -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1974177 Title: Please merge sbuild 0.83.1 from Debian unstable To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sbuild/+bug/1974177/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1974246] [NEW] mlxbf_gige: increase MDIO polling rate
Public bug reported: SRU Justification: [Impact] There is MDIO logic within the mlxbf_gige driver that currently polls for completed transactions every 100us. This has been reviewed and tested in the lab and found to be inefficient. [Fix] The fix is to modify the driver logic to increase the MDIO polling rate to 5us. With this change the amount of time spent waiting for the MDIO BUSY signal to de-assert drops from ~100us to ~27us for each operation. [Test Case] The driver should function as before, specifically: * driver probes successfully * oob_net0 link comes up, as seen with "ifconfig -a" * reset and power cycle testing toggle PHY hardware, and oob_net0 link still comes up [Regression Potential] This change affects all MDIO transactions to the board-level PHY device, and as such, could cause a regression with PHY communications. However, this change has been heavily tested. ** Affects: linux-bluefield (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1974246 Title: mlxbf_gige: increase MDIO polling rate To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-bluefield/+bug/1974246/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1974241] [NEW] mlxbf_gige: revert "add interrupt counts" commit
Public bug reported: SRU Justification: [Impact] There is a mlxbf_gige driver commit (ed0dd97e64a5) which pertains to "UBUNTU: SAUCE: mlxbf_gige: add interrupt counts to "ethtool -S". This logic is modified in upstream Linux, so this SAUCE commit will need to be reverted. [Fix] The fix is to revert this driver commit. [Test Case] With this commit reverted the driver should function as before (e.g. probe succeeds, oob_net0 link up, etc) EXCEPT that the output of "ethtool -S" will no longer show the interrupt counts. [Regression Potential] The amount of driver logic being reverted is quite small, so no potential for creating a regression. ** Affects: linux-bluefield (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1974241 Title: mlxbf_gige: revert "add interrupt counts" commit To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-bluefield/+bug/1974241/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1974230] [NEW] Negative cache results from dnsmasq do not include SOA as required in RFC2308
Public bug reported: RFC2308 states: 6 - Negative answers from the cache When a server, in answering a query, encounters a cached negative response it MUST add the cached SOA record to the authority section of the response with the TTL decremented by the amount of time it was stored in the cache. This allows the NXDOMAIN / NODATA response to time out correctly. The effect is that the negative cache results returned by dnsmasq cannot be cached by other resolvers such as systemd-resolved. A good example of why this is a problem: Two clients with systemd-resolved send DNS queries to dnsmasq for the same record The first one makes a query and gets NXDOMAIN with SOA. This results in systemd-resolved caching the negative result. The second client makes a query and gets NODATA without the SOA. This results in systemd-resolved not caching the negative result. Consider a domain name that only has an A record published. When connecting to that domain a lookup happens for the and A record. One can end up in a situation where systemd-resolved has the A record cached locally, but it still goes out to the network to perform the lookup only to get the same negative cache result that is missing the SOA I see this behavior in 18.04 and 22.04 First query to dnsmasq can be cached: dig @10.0.1.21 a.google.com ; <<>> DiG 9.16.1-Ubuntu <<>> @10.0.1.21 a.google.com ; (1 server found) ;; global options: +cmd ;; Got answer: ;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NXDOMAIN, id: 3107 ;; flags: qr rd ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 0, AUTHORITY: 1, ADDITIONAL: 1 ;; OPT PSEUDOSECTION: ; EDNS: version: 0, flags:; udp: 512 ;; QUESTION SECTION: ;a.google.com.
